Re: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-15 Thread Boris Liberman
Leon,

In my very case it is pretty trivial. During our visit to AutoWorld
museum in Brussels just for fun I gave my daughter my K10D with FA 43
attached and she took few shots. Then the following dialog transpired:

She: Dad, I want your camera.
Me: But dear, you have your own one (She has Optio W30)
She: Yes, I know, but I don't like it any more. I like yours.

So that for the next very camera upgrade that may happen, the old one
will belong to my daughter.

P.S. I intend to publish a gallery of pictures that she took to
illustrate my point further :-).

RE: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-12 Thread John Coyle
I have only ever twice sold a camera: a Voigtlander Vito CD, which was my
first ever serious camera, and a Fujica ST701n, which was a replacement for
a stolen SV, which had been my first SLR.
I now have several Spotmatics, an SV (bought on a whim because it is
identical to the one stolen, and is a joy to use), an ES, a K2, an ME, an
SFN, an Espio 70 and an MZ-S in Pentax, and a Fed 4 for 35mm film, a
Rolleicord for medium format, and in digital, one compact, an Optio 4WR, and
one SLR, an *ist-D, and I doubt I'll ever sell any of them, being as much of
a lover of classic cameras as a photographer. I've also got a box full of
dead Pentax 35mm and digital compacts of various recent models which came
gratis from a local distributor clear-out.

My workhorse cameras are the MZ-S or SV for film, and the *ist-D for
digital. The Optio is carried in the car, or is used by my wife on the rare
occasions she wants to use a camera. The *ist-D and just two lenses, the
16-45 and 50-200 were what I carried for a recent trip to Egypt and Spain,
and served me very well: the results are excellent and the kit was light and
easy to carry in a small backpack.

I may consider buying the next Pentax digital SLR, depending upon price and
size: I don't need or want a behemoth of a camera which doubles as a
weight-training tool, nor do I really need full-frame - but it would be
interesting to see how my collection of Pentax lenses of various eras
perform on such a sensor. If I do, the *ist-D may go to one of my
granddaughters, who is expressing an interest in photography as a career - I
know, don't encourage her!

I tend to hang onto cameras. In all honestly, I should dump most of my
film cameras. The problem is that I'd keep the nicest one (the MZ-S)
and then get so little for the others it wouldn't be worth selling. I
gave my MX and ZX-7 to the Art dept. for photo classes and I kept the
MZ-S, the Sp500, and the 645. Keeping the SP500 (vs the MX) is
definitely a sentimental choice but it still works fine and it was my
first camera. I'm always amazed how intrigued students are by a
screwmount lens.

Re: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-11 Thread Joseph McAllister
My first camera is sitting on top of my refrigerator as I type. A
Kodak Brownie Hawk-eye with flash attachment. My dad brought me a
Zeiss Ikon Nettax folding 120 camera from Europe in 1958. Started
working with a 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Busch Pressman in 1962, still have it. My
first 35 mm camera was a Spotmatic I picked up in Japan in 1965. I
purchased a two body, three lens, 3 back Zenza Bronica S-2 outfit on
that same trip. Worked well for about a year. Repairs kept it going
through college and a couple of studios I either partnered in or
worked for in San Francisco through 1972. Started working in 4x5 with
a Busch Pressman at that time. Got rid of the Bronica kit and the
Spotmatic in trade for a black Spotmatic and a half dozen primes to
work as a travel photographer in Europe through 1974. Still have the
black Spotmatic and a 50 mm f1.4, but it's a real beater now.

From 1975 ~ 1987 I worked as a spook on the dark side, and did some
personal photography, but not a lot. Too tired mostly. During that
time I did expand my screw-mount collection to about 15 lenses and
picked up another (used) black Spotmatic body. In 1990, that body, 6
lenses including a stove-pipe 600 mm were stolen out of my car at an
event. My automobile insurance replaced them with a PZ-1, three Tokina
zooms (28 mm~200 mm range) and a Tamron 300 mm f2.8 with Tamron 2x
tele-extender. Worked that kit (and still do, but replaced the PZ-1
with a PZ-1p body) until 1997, when I hired on to help catalog and
dispose of a venerable photo store in Seattle, whose inventory filled
the store, the empty store next door, and 3 rented garages. It took a
year of a few days a week, and ultimately a dozen weekends of sales,
for which I was supposed to be paid. Never was from the start, so I
started setting stuff aside in the warehouse we rented. Accumulated
a LARGE pile over in the corner. When the sales were over, I asked the
boss to go through the pile and let me know what I could keep, unless
he wanted to pay me my back wages, over $3000 by then. He looked at
the pile, then at me, then asked his partner if I was ripping him off.
Nope, sez he.

eBay kept me alive and my mortgage paid for the next two years as I
sold off what I decided I really didn't need. Some of it I wish I
could have kept now, but hey, I probably wouldn't have used it much.
Lots of 2 1/4 gear, several Pentax 6x7 kits, including a bellows and
slide copier set, many 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 cameras and darkroom gear.
Several old Asahi bodies and lenses, Dozens of antique Kodak folders
and studio cameras, many collectibles. Even sold an 8 x 10 Century on
a police ID rail setup, with numbers you could set from the camera
position. Gobs of Polaroid. Nikon and Canon bodies from the 70s and
80s, with assorted lenses.

I kept the Deardorf 8x10 and a bag of holders, a dozen or more lenses
and shutters, and assorted accessories. And I still have both Busch
Pressmans, in field kits, along with 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 Speed Graphic, 4x5
Speed Graphic, all kinds of flash gear, darkroom gear (Got rid of the
Super Chromega 2 years ago) including enlarging lenses for all
formats, slide projectors from the Kodak 110 to an antique 2 1/4 x 3
1/4.

In case you missed it, my latest purge on eBay included a SMCP-A* 135
f1.8, a SMCP-A* 200 mm f2.5, an 18 mm f2.8, 50 mm f1.2, and a handful
of -M and -A lenses - several macros. That was in February. Once I get
unpacked at my new digs in Seattle, I'll be putting more out there for
sale. Unfortunately, the good stuff I have left will probably stay.
I'll keep one LX and all it's accessory finders and backs for a while
longer, and some of the keeper flash gear. Just in case.

I'll be putting photos up on my website in the next few months of the
gear I have, and that which I no longer want. This will include 2 LXs
and a Program-A (motor drives, winders for both are available) and
more I won't bother listing yet. First LX to sell comes with 2 bricks
of frozen Ektar 25. The second LX comes with a bunch of frozen Velvia.
All film out of date but frozen solid.

So it's obvious that I will hang on to my old DSLRs for a while, as
well as my PZ-1p, my Spotmatic, an LX (the shiniest one),
and my K100D, K10D, K20D and a 67 kit.

And yes, I use them all, all at the same time, so they won't go to
waste sitting on a shelf. ;-p

RE: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-11 Thread Malcolm Smith
Hi John,

I feel the same way, for me the upgrade path with film
cameras was usually the medium (film), or a new lens, so it
didn't matter that I was still using an MX when there were
newer models available, besides I enjoyed using the MX. I
waited until the MZ-3 before having a camera with AF. But now
the medium is in the camera and it's a whole new ball game. I
 still own 2x MX, 2x KX, 1x LX, 2x Super A, 2x MZ-3 and a 645
 plus various spare parts bodies.

I've really cut back on my film cameras - just one MX a LX - but they are
used frequently and will be whilst film is easy to get. These two are
destined for the shelf when film is no more, I won't sell these. The shift
from film as the medium to the camera has been difficult to get used too,
yet I have to say the economics stack up very favourably against film
processing, even with the amount of photography I do.

Oddly enough, I sold most of the film cameras because I thought that the
bottom would drop out of the market for them as digital cameras became
widespread. The last time I looked, LXs still made reasonable money. Digital
SLRs second hand don't fair badly either. I think I've finally got to the
stage of accepting a camera (particularly digital) as something which does
have a second hand value. It's time for me to move on with this.

I think it's time to really look at offers on the K20D. To go back to the
subject line - what do I plan to do with my old DSLRs - I think the answer
is sell them on, in the same way I did with film SLRs.

Regards,

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm

It's good to see the LX MX still fetching reasonable prices and that people
still value them. If I sold all my other film kit I'd still keep the LX, at
least one MX and at least one KX along with the K series primes I have. Digital
was a bit of a learning curve for me but I'm glad I went down that route, the
biggest problem was finding a good ulta-wide lens I was happy with. On the
digital side I'm happy to keep three DSLR's but no more than three, if I
upgrade beyond the K20D then either the K10D or K20D will have to go, I'm just
in the process of selling some gear I no longer use.

Best regards,

John

Like Minolta, high-end Pentax bodies still hold their value due to
rarity (Specifically the MZ-S and LX, MXen are quite cheap these
days). It is kinda odd that an MZ-S is worth around the same as a F5
or EOS 1v though.

I keep two cameras. I started with two *istDs and sold one just a few
weeks before the K10D was released. It went for $450. which I think
was a good price. I then added a K10D. Around the time the K20D was
released, I sold the other *istD for about $350 and bought a K20D. I
don't want more than two cameras, but I do need two. Selling as
early as possible in the replacement cycle seems most practical.

I have a couple of friends who are interested in photography, but have more
pressing things to do with their money than buy cameras. I pass my old
cameras off to them.

RE: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-10 Thread John Whittingham
That's a good policy Paul. I'm reluctant to part with the *istD due to it's
diminutive size, low weight, use of AA batterties, TTL flash (AF28T etc) and
the fact that it's less demanding on the lens in use than the higher resolution
DSLR's. On a trip to Scotland earlier this year I re-acquainted myself with the
*istD and found it an absolute joy to use purely for pleasure purposes. I
bought the *istD secondhand with accessories (which I sold) and it basically
cost me about £50 for the camera body so I'll take it anywhere without any
apprehension. If I sold any of the cameras it would be the K10D despite being a
very great camera.

Selling as

A perception question. I had no problem having a large number of film

Digital is different; I have two DSLRs and would love to add a K20D but a
third DSLR seems too much. I expect I've got it in my mind that this is a
disposable electronic gadget - but the *ist D I bought as soon as it was

Re: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Bob,

I have zero brand loyalty and very little sentimentality about
cameras. I inherited my father's camera too, a fine 1953 Leica IIIf
kit. He loved it. I found it a pain in the ass to use, and sold it
after a year or two worth of trying to use it honoring his memory. His
memory remains just as beloved and full of respect without the camera
in my hands. It's all just equipment to do the job I want, which is to
make photographs. I don't know why the insinuation regards marketing
and advertising.

I shot with Nikon SLRs and Leica RFs for thirty+ years. Had the same
Nikon kit from 1981 to 2001, plus or minus a lens or body, and had
mostly the same Leica kit for 13 years too. Why? because it did the
job I wanted. I tried other 35mm equipment in that same time period to
see what it might offer (Olympus and Contax) but always went back to
the Nikon/Leica gear. I also shot subminiature and a lot of medium
format ... not because of someone's advertising but because I like the
formats.

Digital capture was essentially new in 2002 for me. The cameras were
an unknown and I needed to experiment to find out what suited me
purposes, felt good in my use, and produced the goods.

BTW: The Pentax kit is for sale. I've only made 120 exposures with the
Pentax gear in the last 8 months. I'm happier and getting better
results working with the other gear I have acquired ... that's all
that matters to me. The equipment is transitory, I don't fall in love
with objects.

What you do is up to your own discretion. I don't disparage it, but I
also don't participate in your emotional attachments to equipment.

Godfrey

with a faster buffer and the battery life is worse than abysmal. If they
brought out an R-D2 I would buy it and eBay the R-D1 (as long as it was
identical in every other way).

I'm a happy camper - no plans to change or upgrade. Not for a few years
yet. When I do it will be for a full frame version of the 1D, in
whatever incarnation.

Other than trimming the leader, I find my Leica IIIf very simple to use. But
each to his own.
I also tend to stick with a brand and kit for financial reasons rather than
brand loyalty. Hip-hopping from Nikon to Canon to Pentax to Olympus to whatever
can get very expensive.

My *istD is basically just sitting there. I've tried to tempt my kids
into taking pics with it, but they don't bite. If I could get some
cash for it, I'd sell it, but it seems hardly worth the bother against
the paternal hope for a sudden increase in the kid's interest.

Then on the other hand, the K10D may be phased out before the kids
ever get around... :-)

I don't think twice about picking up the K10D over the K20D today,
though. Both of them are very much adequate tools.

 Hi All,

I was wondering on this cold and wet weekend as I nurse my cold
(Melbourne winters are SO much fun) what I'm going to do with my ever
increasing digital SLR collection. It's not really worth while selling
them off, but I also don't want to keep them in a cupboard for the rest
 of eternity.

I normally have 2 cameras in operation. A field camera, that I won't
loose sleep over if it ends up being dropped into sea water and for want
of a better term a studio camera that I use when the danger is not
imminent. The current field camera is an istD, the studio camera is a
K10D and I have a retired (or spare) istD doing nothing. I've resisted
the K20D simply because I don't want to have too many cameras without a
purpose. But the K30D is on the list and at that point I have 2 istD's
sitting around. This might be a good time to start playing with stereo
photography, all I need is a second of one of the lenses I already own
 and I'm away.

When the K10D is retired it may end up being converted to IR. Given new
cameras coming out every couple of years and even buying into every
second generation I'm going to drown in cameras eventually if I don't
find uses for them. Has anyone else thought of this or already run into
the problem? and if so what have you done/plan to do?

Simple. I sell them on ebay (which I am doing right now, in fact). Sure, it
won't pay for the cost of a new camera, but often it will pay for a new lens
or pay for 1/2 to 3/4th of a new lens.

And most of all, someone else gets a pretty darn good camera for a lot
cheaper than retail price.

In other words, pass the goodness around.

Hi Malcolm

I feel the same way, for me the upgrade path with film cameras was usually the
medium (film), or a new lens, so it didn't matter that I was still using an MX
when there were newer models available, besides I enjoyed using the MX. I
waited until the MZ-3 before having a camera with AF. But now the medium is in
the camera and it's a whole new ball game. I still own 2x MX, 2x KX, 1x LX, 2x
Super A, 2x MZ-3 and a 645 plus various spare parts bodies.

A perception question. I had no problem having a large number of film
cameras and funds permitting, wouldn't have thought twice about adding
another.

Digital is different; I have two DSLRs and would love to add a K20D but a
third DSLR seems too much. I expect I've got it in my mind that this is a
disposable electronic gadget - but the *ist D I bought as soon as it was
released has been a continual joy. Perhaps it's time to readjust my

gave my MX and ZX-7 to the Art dept. for photo classes and I kept the
MZ-S, the Sp500, and the 645. Keeping the SP500 (vs the MX) is
definitely a sentimental choice but it still works fine and it was my
first camera. I'm always amazed how intrigued students are by a
 screwmount lens.

 Godfrey,

I still have all my Pentax equipment - ME, Super Program, PZ-1,
*istDS, K10D, plus the K20D I'm shooting now. Space is no problem
and their monitary value at end of life was easily eclipsed by their
sentimental value and how it feels to shoot with them. I've got my
dad's Retina IIIc too, the 1st 35mm I borrowed. Who could sell

 these

 old friends.

Maybe if I bought camera after camera after camera looking for that
special something they market in their advertising, I would have

 owned

more and cycled thru things like you. I think the photographer has
more to do with the image than the camera or lens.

Re: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I didn't say it wasn't simple to use. I said I found it a pain in the
ass to use ... I didn't give a reason.

The pain in the ass was that my father adored that camera and kept it
pristine perfect, as if it had never been touched. I take care of my
equipment but I don't treat it like sacred objects. Using his camera
was a pain in the ass because whenever a little bit of dust or dirt
would get on it, I could hear him in my head saying to be careful,
clean it now, etc etc.

I owned and used a IIf and IIc for 18 years. No problems. They were my
cameras, to do with as I pleased.

Other than trimming the leader, I find my Leica IIIf very simple to

I also tend to stick with a brand and kit for financial reasons
rather than brand loyalty. Hip-hopping from Nikon to Canon to Pentax
to Olympus to whatever can get very expensive.

I cannot fathom what has made such a negative impression on you.

Someone asked for what others planned to do with their equipment.
This is what I do.
I don't care what you do.

But we are all interested in what you do, Godfrey, auto-pneumatics
aside. ;-)

I understand exactly what you mean about your father's camera. I'm the
sort that tends to break things (hence my interest in entropy) so I'm
always impressed with anything that has survived an association with me
for an extended period. Inherited stuff tends to sit in drawers because
I can never be completely comfortable using it.

If I *HAD* any old DSLRs, I'd keep them. My year a few months K10D is my
1st DSLR. I suspect, however, that as time passes I'll acquire more
photography equipment keep it. I have 2 nephews; they might like to try
photography. my brother likes photography, but can't afford to own a
DSLR--I'd probably pass on equipment to him. Cheers, Christine
