I agree that the difference between PS v6.0 & CS2 is substantial, but the basics haven't changed. Curves, Levels, layers, layer masking, adjustment layers, USM (the major tools for image processing as far as I'm concerned), are the same. Once you have a firm grounding using those tools, then you can start in on the extras offered in CS & CS2. Have fun Marnie. From the standpoint of image processing, what camera made a particular image file, RAW or JPEG, is almost completely irrelevant presuming that Photoshop's RAW conversion is applicable. You'll be talking entirely RGB level editing capabilities, and almost entirely 8bit work. There's a lot to be had there, if the instructor is any good. Godfrey Yeah, I know that is why I was disappointed, not using RAW conversion in CS (which I have) or CS2. I really did want that. He taught art and photography classes in colleges for something like 20 years. Basically retired now, I guess, and teaching classes at the local civic arts (adult ed). They get some pretty decent teachers here. I picked up a few things already, but I plan to go through some books afterwards, like Frasier's. I need sort of hands on to learn better, just reading and doing my own exercises doesn't do it for me. Maybe a book followup will. Hopefully. I wouldn't want to judge an instructor without knowing more about his background and reviewing his class. Using software that is somewhat behind the times, or lower spec than you're using, you have to evaluate what is being articulated and apply the concepts to your current tool suite. Regards his comments about cameras, well, I'm pretty tired of trying to justify Pentax or Sony or Panasonic .. .or anything else ... even to photographers who should know better. So he has a prejudice to prefer Canon, Nikon and Olympus: so do thousands of other photographers, although Olympus less so than the other two. A Photoshop class should be camera agnostic. Re: OT: I'm back, Everyone Happy?, PS Class Questions
I agree with Shel. If you're paying for this class you could probably do with a more current version of PS - unless you're totally new to PS. Also if the teacher is a graphic artist/designer & not a photographer, you'll get a totally different view of PS. I say this from experience after attending a couple of PS classes being taught by a non photographer. I don't think you need to do anything to inform your instructor about Pentax except show him some images taken with a Pentax. (Still wish I knew where he found all those fields of poppies in CA, he told me, but I never found them. Maybe I will try again.) I believe he lists places where he shot the poppies, in his poppy book. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: OT - I'm back & Monterey Trip I'll try to be brief. Or as brief as I can be. :-) Mom had a colostomy operation a week ago. She's been home about two days. Seems to be doing okay. But the big issue will be getting her back on her feet and walking. She hasn't walked since she went into the hospital. Nothing really wrong with her legs and feet, but the floors there were slick and she was/is weak. I am afraid of her losing her mind/body connection with her feet. But I think I can get her up again. I am hiring a caregiver to help me too. She went in last Friday, had the operation Saturday night and was supposed to be there for a week. Since she was gone and I didn't have the expense of paying someone to take care of her, I thought, sheesh, I should take advantage of this and go somewhere. I okayed it with her doctor. I went last Wed - Thurs. I went to Monterey for 2 1/2 days and 2 nights. Saw the 17-mile drive (and took shots), Carmel (didn't), scenic drive in Carmel (didn't), the Monterey Aquarium (did), and Monterey Fisherman's Wharf (did). The weather was nice both days, just clouding up at night the last day. It was sort of whirlwind, and I was a bit pushed and tired, but I am glad I got away. Also while searching for one particular gallery in Carmel to look at one particular painter's paintings (which I did finally see), I came across a photographic gallery. With 8-9 original (resales, not reprints) Ansel Adams!!! A few other famous photographers too. It was neat to be able to get up and eyeball them closely. Impressive. One was an Indian pueblo type village with the moon over it. It was selling for $55,000. One of the smaller cheaper ones was $12,000. I should have written the titles down, but didn't. Sooner or later I may find them all, I think I've seen reproductions in books of some of them. Too bad he couldn't make that much during his lifetime, huh? And I had a nice geeky photo hobbyist type talk with the clerk in the gallery. I also saw George Lepp's California Poppy Show at the Monterey Natural History Museum. I didn't know it was going to be there, I just discovered it was there by reading a little tourist magazine they hand out in all the hotels and shops there. I had seen some of his poppy pictures before in a digital slideshow when I went to a Lepp weekend about a year ago. But it was nice to see some prints in person. (Still wish I knew where he found all those fields of poppies in CA, he told me, but I never found them. Maybe I will try again.) All in all, a satisfying trip. Although I was still pretty tired during it. And a quite photographic trip. :-) I hadn't planned to come back to PDML for about another month. Not until my programming project is finished. But Mom's operation has derailed me. I think I'll mainly be busy with her this week. So I'll hang around for a week or so until she is better. Then unsubscribe again to get back to my programming project undistracted. I simply don't lurk well. :-) Hi guys. Missed you. Marnie aka Doe

WRT the memory card, the K1000 has an innovative and daring new type of memory card: a sort of "anologue memory strip". Instead of fiddling with little slots, the whole back of the camera opens to accept the card. The card itself is a largish, ergonomically shaped cylinder. Just pull the cellulose "capture area" across the back of the shutter to a handy take-up spool, close the back of the camera, and you're set to go. These memory cassettes have good points and bad points. On the bad side, they'll only take 36 frames. One the good side, there's only one resolution to choose from (highest) - you can compress the files later in your computer for internet purposes. And, if your batteries run out, the capture system still works! Just shoot away, setting your own aperture and shutter speed manually! How's that for innovation!! Have fun! cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson

Re: OT - I'm back, Suckers!
Hi, again, Lukasz, Well, as you now know I bought an LX. And, you're right, I was broke. And, in fact, I'm still broke. I paid for the LX by cheque; just wait until Vic tries to cash it. Hee hee hee... But, seriously, yeah, this summer I was having serious cash flow problems. Two things changed a little bit. First, over the last few weeks we've gotten a little busier at work (it may be only temporary, but it's meant two 1/2 decent paycheques). Plus, I changed residences last month, and that saves me quite a bit of rent each month. Those two situations combined to allow me this purchase. Besides, when you hear of something you really want, you figure out a way, right?I mean, this is the first body I've bought in well over a year. I've been a very reasonable boy... And, your joke is in no way offensive. I'd have sold a kidney for it, but I only have one left, and I need that one. I already sold the first one to pay for my Leica... cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true." -J. Re: [OT] I'm back :)
Weird. I got a Leica this summer, and I still like my cat. Go figure. As a cat lover, though, I have to agree with your assessment of the beasts. Maybe I like them because they remind me of ~me~. I've always said that dogs are what we wish humans to be; cats reflect us as we really are. -frank William Robb wrote: > I was as commited a cat person as you could hope to meet until > Leica came into my life. > Now I see cats for what they are: foul, filthy little alergen > creating parasites. > > William Robb -- "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. Most of the people I know would classify a Belgian Shepherd or a Bernese as a big dog. My Rottie bitch is 90 pounds and 27 inches at the shoulder, my male is 28 inches and 100 pounds. I don't think of them as big dogs, more like chihuahuas. I had both a Belgian and a Bernese in a couple of obedience classes a while back. Nice dogs. Especially the Bernese and the Belgian.
