Re: GESO Construction V

2009-08-01 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, William! Funny thing about this shoot: when I 1st approached those
in charge about a photo story of the project, the project manager was
enthusiastic, but he warned me that construction workers don't like their
photos taken, so I best prepare myself.

Well, he was only very wrong. When I get on the site for a shoot, usually a
few construction workers find a quick minute to tell me, You should have
been here yesterday. We did . . . . Or workers ask to have their picture
taken with another worker. Or a worker will shout out, The action is about
to start over there . . . . Or I'm asked, you got these pics on a web site
or something?

It's been a lot of fun, but at the end of a shoot, I'm really tired after
being out in the sun with hard hat and boots and two cameras around my neck,
all the while navigating the terrain and trying to not to get in anyone's
way. I have to make sure I present myself as capable, safety aware, and
discreet, or I'll be yanked off the site real quick.

Cheers, Christine

An office worker might get a paper cut if not careful, a construction worker
will lose a couple of fingers, or worse. Be really aware of what is above
you. Things can go sideways really quickly and a couple of thousand pounds

This is an ~excellent~ gallery. I've never worked construction, but I
have worked outdoors through 9 winters (as a bike courier), so I know
what it's like to spend the better part of all day outside in very

Nice job. Last November, a tree fell in front of my house taking out
some power lines. I played with my bigma, getting some shots of the
PGE crew the next day. There's a very interesting body language to
men working on that sort of job.

Unfortunately shooting against an overcast sky, the pictures didn't
turn out very well:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157608644452376/

Once I'm better with post processing I may go back and see if I can
bring out a couple of them, but I'll probably just wait for more
opportunities for this type of shot.

This is an ~excellent~ gallery. I've never worked construction, but I
have worked outdoors through 9 winters (as a bike courier), so I know
what it's like to spend the better part of all day outside in very
cold weather - it ain't easy. I love that you got these on a snowy
day - really brings out how tough their job is this time of year.

These photos are all very well composed and they all work so well
together. It's hard to pick a favourite, but I do like this one a
lot:

http://faculty.ccc.edu/caguila/caisson/content/caisson_drilling_feb_27_33_large.html

It really has personality!

Excellent set of photos, Christine. I particularly like the one of the guy
fitting the trough to the cement truck.

I did a bit of labouring on a site in Bordeaux in 1976. It's hard work, but
lots of fun when concrete is being poured. The worst bit is having to get
inside the cement mixer to clean it.

Re: GESO Construction II

2009-02-28 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks Joseph--you're right--yesterday's shoot was about what was happening
at the site to be sure. It was the drilling cementing of the 1st caisson
for the superstructure, so it had to be documented. It was so cold
yesterday, there were some technical frustrations, so I was happy to
photograph the guys during some goofy moments--the mood got tense at times,
so I think they saw the camera as an opportunity for a little cheerful
play--a release of sorts. Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated. Cheers,
Christine

Much more pleasing than your first batch, but the first were more
dramatic. A few of these are pretty good job site photos. Like the one

Hi Christine,

Very nice set of images, I missed Construction I but this gallery
looks very good, I like most of them.

 Hi Everyone:

It was a $itch of a day out at the construction site:  very, very cold,
damp, and flurries.  But the drilling continued on the 1st caisson for the
super-structure (indoor parking garage student services building) as well
as dumping cement and the drilling for the 2nd caisson (last 2 pics in
GESO).  They will drill a total of 90 caissons.  The construction guys had
some technical glitches, I couldn't get my 360 Pentax flash to work
right--I was very close to pitching it down that over 50 foot hole (1st
pic).  And I didn't check the K10D, so, without knowing it, I ended up
shooting  jpegs on that body--ugh.  And the light of course was dreadful
 given the weather.

Still, I had a blast.  The construction guys were really nice had no
problem I was there.  I was able to get close; the assist. foreman feels
more comfortable letting me roam a bit freely.  At one point he said to me:
I'm going in the trailer; I'm freezing.  Now remember, if you fall down
that hole, Christine, we're not coming after you.  We're just gonna dump the
cement right on top of you.  To which I replied, right.

Anyway, these pics are in color as opposed to black white like my 1st
 construction GESO.
 Comments are greatly welcome.
 Cheers, Christine

I particularly like the composition of No 5 with the bare open

Nice documentation.
Might you try a color image or two ?

Next time I'll throw in one or two.

I'd also suggest you try to minimize the inclusion of soo much sky.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitly keep this mind as I shoot. Big
cheers, Christine
