Re: Ned Bunnell and "Pentax Pro Services" announcement
Well said. It's extemely rare to see Pentax advertisements in the mainstream media. Kennedy's seem content to restrict advertising to Photography magazines. On the other hand, Olympus, the other brand fighting to capture a slice of the Australian DSLR market from Canon and Nikon, is a regular advertiser in the general media (with several recent full page ads for their two new cameras) as well as advertising in the Photography mags. Kennedy seem to have got a bit better, but I wish they didn't have the Sigma distributorship too. I've not had occasion to need any service as yet, but Pentax USA been good about handling the couple of small parts orders for bits I needed and straightening out some issues with a rebate that got messed up, I really can't fault them. Certainly, for *any* company today, improvements to the service programs for general consumers is a worthwhile goal. But Pentax will not attract many professional photographers to their equipment until they also offer a Professional Services program. By and large, other than for the long-tele end of the game, they've got a solid, competitive body and high quality glass ready for various professionals' use that are priced well ... but it's difficult to market that against the notion of Nikon, Canon and Olympus having the same as well as a service program that caters to those who depend upon the cameras for their living. The professional presence is a big marketing win for Nikon, Canon and Olympus. I'm sure Pentax would like to have a similar flag to wave. :-) Godfrey -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Before digital, they had (at least in Canada) very good pro service on their "pro" cameras (read 6x7/645). I don't think they can ignore that the pro market has moved to digital, and that their pro presence has to move with it. My harping about AF and buffer size/speed on the K10 aside, it's a capable enough camera for just about every kind of phoography, be it pro or amateur, and the lenses they are putting out now are also pro calibre for image quality (the 21 is a bit slow for my taste). With the 16-50 and 50-135 f2.8 zooms now on the market, they have built an excellent base for attracting pros in with the equipment. The 60-250 will be a welcome addition as well. I've come to recognize that most photographers, pro or amateur, are now married to zoom lenses (I'm not there yet, but I'll probably up my number of zooms to two with the 60-250), and that they are definitely capable of giving excellent results. I think a good pro service program and some good flogging of it in the trade publications would do them as much good as a 14mp camera. I guess I would be able to send my broken stuff to generous PDMLer to help me fix it more professionaly, right?
