A scene that must play over and over in your memory. Sorry to say, but sounds like your equipment may have sustained more damage than mine. I checked the tracking number yesterday and saw that both the lens and body had been received. Should be contacted with repair estimates soon. That's when I'll find out just how bad ($$$) the damage. According to web info, repair service takes 'prox 15-20 days. RE: OOPS!!
I can't relate a story about falling, but how about sitting in a loo in Xi'an, China, camera bag neatly slung from the hook on the back of the door to prevent it's being dragged out under the door and walked away with: watch in horror as hook breaks in half, sending bag with MZ-S, FA28-105, Sigma 18-35, AF330FTZ flash, etc, down on to concrete floor? Lens hood and filter ring on the Sigma bent, FA 28-105 internal zoom collar bent out of shape, nice scuff mark on corner of MZ-S. Fortunately my travel insurance paid for the repairs, but I'll never trust cheap Chinese hardware again! But I'm glad you're OK... Oops indeed! I took a fall several years ago. End of a long day, light fading, me rushing to a different vantage point on a Mayan ruin. Slipped on a loose stone. My istD w/ 31mm LTD took the brunt of the fall. A quick inspection showed that it seemed to be working ok, but I was worried about hidden damage. Re: OOPS!!
Thanks, Cotty! It was in a small not too well padded bag, so can't be exactly sure. From my recollection of the position of the bag when I picked it up and the position of the camera (with mounted lens) within the bag, it received the impact on the grip edge near the base. If you were to look at the body from the front, the mount was bent about at the placement of the detente receiver hole..'prox 4:00 o'clock. Lens must have received a blow at the same relative location. In my unique idiot fog, I force mounted another lens (50~135) to check if the lens mounting ring on the 16~45 might also be bent. When I went to remove it, I realized I might not be able to get it off. Emitting a medley of animal birthing sounds (mostly from deep in my throat) struggling to remove it. Obviously didn't want to ship that lens as well. Much teeth gritting and grunting seemed to work as I finally got it to release and come off. Just explaining it made me tired. ;) Jack --- On Tue, 12/1/09, Cotty wrote: > From: Cotty > Subject: Re: OOPS!! > To: "pentax list" > Date: Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 3:04 PM > On 1/12/09, Jack Davis, > discombobulated, unleashed: > > >Sad moment.. Re: OOPS!!
From: "Brian Walters" Everyone seems to have a similar story. I was out in the bush photographing a few months ago and had to step over a low fence. My foot caught and my knee and camera both hit the ground at the same time. I think the lens hood on the 16-45 saved it and the camera from serious damage but the hood itself stretched somehow and wouldn't lock in place on the lens anymore. A $88 replacement fixed that ($88 for a bit of circular plastic seemed a bit rich but what can you do?) The knee eventually recovered but I had a list to the right for a few days... Glad you're OK. Re: OOPS!!
Sounds similar to my experience with an LX and Vivitar S1 35-86mm f2.8 a couple years before I went digital. Except that the only ill effects were that the FA-1 prism won't dismount and the back of the camera and the filter ring of the lens are a bit scared. Both camera and lens still work fine in all other respects, (filter ring not even bent enough to keep the from mounting a filter). Hum, so I guess it really wasn't so much like your experience. Thanks for reminding me to not do that with my K20D... Jack Davis wrote: Sad moment.. I was unloading gear after returning home from a short photo trip. Re: Oops!
I had some luck with scale model glue - when I still had time to build scale models we often made our own glue with scrap plastic and xylol - sometimes I had to add reinforcements like glass tissue or long fibers (roving). Once I glued my kid's model train with cianoacrilate and paper as reinforcing fiber - tried that just to keep him happy but it's still fine years later. Re: Oops!
Sound advice from John and Paul indeed. If you feel like guing and have access to, try scale model glue as it melts the parts along the contact area, care not to use too much glue - you may end with a modern art sculpture. If you go for the glue, prepare a surface to place the hood while it dries - I'd suggest some glass for this particular glue. Also, whatever glue you use, keep the shade away from any lens for a fairly long time - cianoacrilate fumes may render anything they cling on useless, and any solvent may harm your lens' coating if you put them together too soon. You're probably better off with a replacement... but I do glue something I'd better buy now and then myself. Good luck anyway. LF John Graves escreveu: Well, i did it and I can't blame anyone else. Re: Oops!
Gorilla Glue might work. You can find it in most good hardware stores. But I would think a replacement lens shade is relatively inexpensive. BTW, I'd test that lens for accurate autofocus and a flat field, just to make sure you didn't knock something out of place. Re: Oops - I did it again [A* vs F* 300's]
Fred wrote: > Congratulations. You picked up a really fine lens. Thanks. From the other comments I've seen, I'm sure I've made a good purchase. I think I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for the following reasons: 1) I already have the A*300mm f/4 but the 4m minimum focus distance is a bit of a pain. I'm also not very good at focusing long MF glass quickly enough when my subject is moving... so the auto focus is a real plus. So is the built-in tripod mount. 2) I was wishing for something slightly wider while using the FA*400mm f/5.6 last weekend. Today while using this F* 300mm lens, I've found that it fits in my bag much more easily as well. The lighter weight is another bonus. > Perhaps you can post a photo of the modified mount? I will do so as soon as I can get it near a digital camera. > However, The F* 300/4.5 is also larger (longer by about 3cm) than > the M*/A* 300/4 - it's not a huge difference, but it's enough so > that the A* (focused at infinity) does fit neatly in my camera bag, > while the F* is simply too long (too tall) to fit (although "your > mileage may vary") (and it's heavier to lug around, too). My small bag (Lowepro Nova 3) will fit this lens vertically, just. With a body attached it would have to lie flat. > Indeed. I would say that the tripod shoe is the main reason why the > F* 300/4.5 still often sells for close to what the FA* 300/4.5 does. I would tend to agree with you there. There's too much weight hanging off the front of the camera otherwise. Whether thats just an academic argument is another matter. I've taken some great pics with the A* lens on a tripod, at some stupid shutter speeds. However I was more careful with my technique due to the front-heavy nature of the rig. > It is better, in my opinion, than both the bayonet hood of the FA* > and the sliding "mini-hoods" of the M*/A* (even though it took me a > while to figure out how to fully use it - I had trouble securing it > while extended at first - doh! - ). Yes, that's where I was starting to head with my thoughts yesterday. After using the lens a bit today I do prefer this style of hood. The FA* bayonet hoods add too much bulk and tend to be fragile (they're plastic), and a bit fiddly as you have to separate them from the lens. The built-in sliding hood of the A*300mm f/4 is not deep enough. Because of this I bought a gigantic generic brand 77mm metal hood that I found in the camera shop's big bag of secondhand hoods. This hood is 3-1/4" (83mm) long and 3-1/2" (89mm) wide at the opening. Mamiya rubber hoods for RB67 glass (the "127~250mm" hood) suit this lens as well, while making it look almost like an f/2.8 lens. The only gripe I have about the F*300mm f/4.5 hood is that I keep trying to screw it the wrong way. It is quite hard to unscrew if you've done it up too tight. > I > do wish that the gear train was disabled when using the clutch set > for manual focusing (as it is, I understand, in the FA* 300/4.5), It is with the FA*400/5.6 and FA*24/2 so I guess the FA*300/4.5 does the same thing. It is a very very nice feature, but I still wish these close- focussing long lenses had a distance limit switch like the big glass does. If the Z-1p can't lock (or starts focussing the wrong way), it takes a while to go through the entire range and back. Half the focus throw of this lens covers the 2-4 metre range. > but I don't find the "whirring" feeling of the F* 300/4.5 to be as > objectionable as on many of the "clutchless" autofocus lenses I have > tried. The F* is very nice to manually focus. In fact it feels the best of all my AF glass. I can't feel any whirring, although I can hear it if I'm focussing quickly. Perhaps you can post a photo of the modified mount? > I really like the handling of this lens; it seems less front-heavy > than the A*300mm f/4, and it focusses a lot closer. It definitely is less front heavy than the M*/A* 300/4 (that 77mm front element of the M*/A* lens ~has~ to weigh more than the 67mm front of the F* lens, of course). (However, the M*/A* lens actually weighs less in total than does the F* lens.) And the closer focusing (2m instead of 4m) is indeed a plus. However, The F* 300/4.5 is also larger (longer by about 3cm) than the M*/A* 300/4 - it's not a huge difference, but it's enough so that the A* (focused at infinity) does fit neatly in my camera bag, while the F* is simply too long (too tall) to fit (although "your mileage may vary") (and it's heavier to lug around, too). And, despite the smaller front element in the F*, it is just as wide as is the M*/A* (due, of course, to the extra girth of the built-in hood - I'm assuming that this is not true with the FA* lens). (By the way, and not too surprisingly, the lengths of the M*/A* 300/4 and the IF-style F* 300/4.5 end up being almost exactly the same when focused close.) Of course, the F* lens looks nothing like the A* lens, and, subjectively speaking, I still prefer the looks of the A* (or, even better, the M*) 300/4 over either of the 300/4.5's (but "your mileage may vary"). > The tripod shoe is well worth having. Indeed. As huge as the shoe is (especially compared to the nice A* 200/4 Macro tripod mount that can replace it), it is still nice to have. I would say that the tripod shoe is the main reason why the F* 300/4.5 still often sells for close to what the FA* 300/4.5 does. > The built-in hood is quite interesting: you unscrew it, slide it > out, then screw it into place. It actually makes sense; it seems > a bit better than the bayonet-fitting hoods of the FA* lenses. It is better, in my opinion, than both the bayonet hood of the FA* and the sliding "mini-hoods" of the M*/A* (even though it took me a while to figure out how to fully use it - I had trouble securing it while extended at first - doh! - ). By the way, the separate screw-in accessory hood for the M* 300/4 (which obviously also fits the A* 300/4) is definitely worth having - it's not only longer than the M*/A*'s sliding hood, it's also a lot more secure in use. > I don't like the MF/AF selection; you have to change the setting > on both the lens and the body. I'm too used to the FA* lenses which disengage the > body automatically when you set the lens to manual (and the > clutch mechanism is much nicer in general). Owning mostly manual focus lenses (and only one FA lens, the FA* 85/1.4), I don't have any already-learned habits to break - . I do wish that the gear train was disabled when using the clutch set for manual focusing (as it is, I understand, in the FA* 300/4.5), but I don't find the "whirring" feeling of the F* 300/4.5 to be as objectionable as on many of the "clutchless" autofocus lenses I have tried. > Now if I end up liking this lens I may have to sell the beloved A* > 300mm f/4 due to lack of use :( Well, I plan on keeping both the A* 300/4 and the F* 300/4.5. The F* is ultimately a sharper lens (as much as I hate to admit it - ), with a very effective hood, with pretty good manual focus feel, and with a solid if bulky tripod mount. RE: Oops
It's always dicey using metal tools around plastic parts. I remember being very careful changing screens on my MX. However, last month I was looking through the viewfinder on my MZ-S and noticed some dust. I removed the lens and was able to release the screen frame with a fingernail. Then I carefully lifted out the screen, blew the dust off, and re-installed it, all without tools. I was pleased with both myself and the MZ-S design. If Pentax Canada is out, that means they'll ship them from Japan or wherever, and my store assures me it is order and will arrive at the store once it is available to Pentax Canada. I don't want to stiff my shop, I go there for more than shopping, etc. I'll let them do it, give say, another month, then call and cancel and phone your guy.
