I think his banana's knotted into the other end of his tie. Probably to keep it

Well, I told you guys yesterday that I wouldn't be online today, but
clearly I lied. I only mention this as a preface to explaining that
I'm not on my home computer (hence no PESOs), rather on a public
computer at a library. That is relevent insofar as the screen is
likely not calibrated.

Which leads into the fact that on this public computer, your photo is
extremely dark. None of the other PESOs I've looked at (including my
night-time streetcar shot) are nearly this dark, so even though the
screen's not calibrated, I think the darkness is in your photo, not my
screen.

I think there's a really good photo in there, but I simply can't see
it. The two people on the right are virtually indistiguishable!
Levels! Curves! I need brightness!

;-)

cheers,
frank

How Ironic, you're constantly taking photos in the dark... :-)

You are right, the monitor I'm using right now is getting tired, and it
is no longer as bright as it used ot be. (I've been very lazy and have
to swap it out for the good one), and this is very dark. To actually
see what was happening in this photo I had to save a copy of this image
to my system and use irfanview to kick the Gamma up a couple of
notches. I had thought it was just me so I didn't comment on it.

Bruce,

It's great to have you posting photos again!

I prefer the second one, mostly because there is some texture to the mountains.
In the first pic they look almost like a cardboard cut-out, even though the
rest of the photo is lovely.

The first one is stunning. It has a "hyper-real" feel to it. I don't
know exactly what that means, it's just the word that comes to mind
when I look at it.

Hi!

Ok, so it is not really a matched pair, but the same mitten twice.
These were both taken near the same time. I'm trying to decide which
I like better. It would be nice to get opinions on what you like, if
any.

http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/monumentvalley_0321.htm

Kind of strange. You see, I've read the comments (this time at least)
before posting mine. I never was there and to me the first shot actually
looks interesting. The second one is more classic of course - the
vertical close-far composition. I guess the shadow does distract, so
with great reluctance I'd vote for second one...

it could be that the polarizer was not having much effect at all on the

I do appreciate the feedback. The polarizer was set to show as much
separation of cloud and sky as possible. I don't know if that would
have an opposite effect on the plants, but I would guess that they
would gain the same benefit. Perhaps it would have looked much worse
without the polarization?

Re: PESO - Pair of Mittens

2005-07-18 Thread Kenneth Waller
The first has too much going on, distracting, a snap to record you being
there.
The second is more interesting, but I believe a lower perspective, with the
foreground stump 'competing' with the mittens would be a stronger image.

Well, so far, it is certainly unanimous that the second is better than
the first. Shooting info on the second one:
Pentax *istD, DA 16-45/4, handheld, polarizer
ISO 200, 1/90 sec @ f/13, 26mm focal length

I do appreciate the feedback. The polarizer was set to show as much

would gain the same benefit. Perhaps it would have looked much worse

#2. I like the other monuments in the distance. Gives a better sense
of the isolation of the place for me. I also like the stump in the
foreground, being almost the same apparent size as the mitten, even
though we know it isn't. Almost kind of funny.

I usually like such things, but the overhanging branch in the
foreground doesn't work so well for me in #1.

i don't like the shadow and the tree branch above on the first one. did you
use a polarizer on either of these shots? the vegetation looks like it is

0321, by far. A bit too bad the tree stump shows
having been cut. You, however, did all it was possible
to do with the scene. Excellent composition and DOF.
Don't like the peek-a-boo limb in upper right of 0318.
Needs to be connected.

They are both wonderful photographs. I have been there, and know that
shooting monumnt valley if much more difficult that it might at first
appear.

Of the two, I prefer the second, #321. The foreground in both the upper
right and lower left adds interest and texture, and the sky is
wonderful, and dominates the scene, as it does in real life. The first
shots is also very effective, however, and better conveys the feel of
the valley, with it numerous "monuments."
