Actually the world could end. Imagine you have but moments to defuse a trillion
megaton thermonuclear device that Mr. Putin has asked Mr. Trump to kindly start
ticking in the Oval Office. Q has sent you a link in the subject line to the
pdf manual so you know whether to cut the green wire or the red wire first, but
he hasn't realised that the link is not active in the subject line, and in the
time it takes you to select, copy & paste...

Re: a puzzlement..

2018-06-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I just did some further testing.

Subject line URLs work fine in standalone iOS Mail.app and macOS Mail.app, but
do not work in the browser-based mail for iCloud using either Safari or FireFox
on macOS. :-)

So much for consistency!

As I said: I used to use this capability with Mail.app on macOS at work.

Most of the time, however, if I send URL-only to someone now, it's as a txt not
an email; it's actually a bit awkward to do it with Mail compared to txt… The
macOS and iOS Message apps process the link, extract an image or preview on
both the sender's and recipient's txt stream, and add a click-/tap-able region
to jump to the web page if desired.

Whether this meets with some set of RFC codes or not I haven't the foggiest,
nor am I interested to find out. If I had to copy and paste the URL from the
subject to a browser to get to the link, well, that's clumsy but I suspect the
world wouldn't end…

 :-)

That may be true for (most) browser-based email clients, but there still ARE
people
that use a dedicated email program :)

I know I do, and while it is perfectly capable of displaying HTML email
contents,
when needed, it does NOT do anything with a link embedded in the subject line.

I am pretty the sure the RFC for email does not allow links there either,
but nobody seems to care about standard compliance these days ...

In the UK they call it ''toplining'' and it's used widely within workplaces,
particularly in business workplaces. It's almost like sending a text by email,
except you just read the subject line and not the body of the email.

Not surprised that the younger generation are using it widely - just to
obfuscate the previous generation ;-)

who won't change their online behavior out of sheer stubbornness or
unwillingness to learn new ways of doing things, are why virus writers

The hyperlink friend sent me was not clickable - (and I'm grateful for
that -)
But after reading your reply and Bob W's  I have to back down on my
thinking she was doing somethingseldomdone...

However I couldn't open her link in the email she sent me without doing
copy and past and then opening a browser. Thundebird doesn't check
spelling in

subject lines either.

If I hadn't been in the room with her when she sent me the link, I
surely would have deleted it without opening the mail.  likewise, if I
get email with

NO subject or with "Hi"  instant delete.

Re: a puzzlement..

2018-06-29 Thread Darren Addy
I agree with Mark Roberts sentiments.

Interesting question Ann. So I decided to try it from my gmail
account. I typed http://www.theautodolly.com (one of my employer's web
sites) into the Gmail subject line and sent it to two recipents:
Myself via a different Gmail account and my work account which I
access via Outlook on a Windows machine.
As I expected, the subject line was NOT clickable in Gmail.
However, I was surprised to see it as a blue underlined link at the
top of the opened Outlook mail message. Clicking it did indeed take me
to a web site.
I don't believe I've ever seen that before and did not know it was possible.

My next question would be whether there is some way to put code in a
subject line so that a link APPEARED to go one place, but actually
went another. THAT would be especially dangerous, as you might think
you were going somewhere safe and instead be doing the opposite.
Outlook does not show you the actual destination of a link in the
subject line (anywhere that I can see).

Re: a puzzlement..

2018-06-29 Thread Mark Roberts
Whether or not putting a link in the subject like *works* is neither
here nor there. It's not accepted practice to send links that way and
I'd say it's a bad idea from a security standpoint for anyone
*receiving* such a message to click a link in a subject line. Too easy
to get in the habit of clicking such links and eventually get sent
somewhere bad by any of the all-too-numerous scumbags on the net.

Tell your friend to stop it for everyone's sake.

J - this was an exchange with her - I had asked if she would put her links in
body next time...   I'm wondering if it has to do with people perpetually
texting each other...

she has an I phone I believe.   I would say this was the first time she
sent me link -- normally an email from her has a comment of some sort,
elaborated on in the body, but
always from her phone..   I have to admit to being annoyed at her

and forth all the time sticking a hyerplink in a subject line is somehow
easier .

Re: A puzzlement...

2017-01-18 Thread John

It's a known problem with Yahoo & email lists. Yahoo adds some kind of
marker to mailing list messages suggesting they *might* be spam.

Gmail sees that marker & decides they *are* spam.

There doesn't seem to be any way to tell Gmail that Yahoo is EFFED-UP
and vice versa. Nor does there appear to be any way to tell Yahoo to NOT
add the marker.

Don't ask me for details, I'm just repeating what I remember of the
explanation given here when it first started happening a couple years back.

Ann, I'm going to try replying to you both directly & through the list.
Maybe it will help you figure out which messages get through & which don't.

I'll try to use each of my three email addresses for the direct
responses and my Yahoo & Earthlink email for responses through the list
(my RoadRunner address is not subscribed to the list).

This is the first response through the list using my Earthlink email.

Re: Pixel Puzzlement

2004-11-17 Thread Sam Jost
A pixel is as large as you print it.
For me an image got pixels. And depending on the size I'm showing it at I'll
get different ppi
ppi=pixel/size

I don't care at all about ppi. When I order a print I order a specific size,
and no matter what ppi values I got in my image I'll get that size. Same
with showing on monitor - I'll just show the picture at some specific size
and don't care about ppi.

Most image editing programs work well with this attitude - if they offer a
ppi setting they mostly just store the value you enter and don't do anything
with it. The only exception I know about is Photoshop which annoyed me
mightily by resizing my picture when I changed the ppi setting.
But since most use PS I met a lot of people who change ppi settings for
resizing pictures. Very confusing way to resize a picture in my book, but
hey, thats just me.

ah well, enough disgression. About your second example, the same picture
scanned with 1000ppi instead of 100ppi will have lots more (10^2) pixels,
and if you print both at the same size the 1000ppi-pixels will be smaller.
Just more pixel crammed into the same space, as you yourself already noted,
yes.

I've been pondering this perplexing pixel problem for a while, and thought
that someone here may have the answer: How large is a pixel?
What I mean is this. If there's an image that has a resolution of 72ppi,
typical for web presentation, and another image, from a scanned version of
the same source, of 4000ppi, are the pixels in each image the same size?
It doesn't seem possible, since if 72 pixels make up an inch each
individual pixel would seem to be larger than if there were 4000 pixels in
the same space. But then, if an image has more pixels per inch than
another image, why is the image larger. Example: one scans a photo @
100ppi and again @ 1000ppi, the 1000ppi scan has greater dimensions, but,
it seems to me, it's just crammed more pixels into the same space, and the
dimensions should be the same, right?

A pixel has no dimensions, it is just a piece of data.
It is given dimension by the output device whether that be printer,
monitor or whatever.
A pixel displayed on a monitor at 72dpi is very large indeed compared
to the same pixel printed on a 1200dpi printer at 1200ppi.
Note that ppi refers to a desired output size and dpi refers to the
*capability of an output device such as printer or monitor.
A decent photo quality print would be at least 300ppi, printed on a
printer capable of at least 1200dpi.
2008x3008 pixels does not in any way refer to image size, it simply
states that there are 6,040,064 picture elements in the image.
How many ppi this is sized to or how many dpi it is displayed at
is dependent on the software/hardware used.

The issue is the definition of terms.
Pixel may at times mean the display characteristic
and at other times mean the sensor characteristic.
There may even be more that I'm not aware of.
It should always be understood in its immediate context
as it is a very broad term.

RE: Pixel Puzzlement

2004-11-17 Thread Jens Bladt
I have read at www.shortcources.com that a pixel (in an image) does not have
a size - it's a code in a computer, not a real physical thing. I believe
that's what you are saying as well. How big it's seen depends on the
ppi-resolution - how you print or see it on a screen.

But that's not quite true:
On the camera sensor the photdiodes (pixels) really have a size. In a * ist
D 3008 pixels is sitting on an app. 24mm wide sensor. This means the
original size of a pixel is something like 24mm/3008 = 0,008 mm. So, the
resolution is close to 3200 ppi (pixel pr. inch) :-)

Every time you enlarge the image, the ppi will fall (provided there's no
interpolation). Making the printer do the job, just means that the
printer/printer driver does the interpolation to make the image fit the
sheet of paper at a chosen ppi.

A pixel is as large as you print it.

For me an image got pixels. And depending on the size I'm showing it at I'll
get different ppi
ppi=pixel/size

Just more pixel crammed into the same space, as you yourself already noted,
yes.

Re: Pixel Puzzlement

2004-11-17 Thread Larry Cook
A pixel has no set dimension as has already been stated. The physical
characteristics of the device being used determines the size of a pixel.
On a 72dpi monitor a pixel is 1/72nd inch squared. On a 600dpi printer a
pixel is 1/600th inch squared. And so on and so forth.

Now if you take an image that is 3inch by 4inch on the display and print
it directly on a printer without any conversion then the resulting
printed image would be 216pixels x 288pixels which would be 216/600 inch
x 288/600 inch which is kind of small. If instead the image is printed
to be 3x4 inches then it will be a 1800x2400pixel image which means
interpolation of some kind will be used to determine the values of the
extra pixels needed.

Ahem... check your numbers.
I guess it depends on what you mean by decent photo quality.

I've printed hundreds of images @ 240 to 300ppi on Epson printers with lower
than 1200dpi capability and I've gotten better than decent results.

Sold a bunch also.

As I said before, if you print you *ist D image at app. 3200ppi, the size of
the image will be app. the original, recorded size = app. 16x24mm.
The pixel size is then app. 0,008mm. The area 24x16mm/600 pixels = app.
0,6 mm² which is 6/100.000 mm². Or a little less than 1/10.000 mm². This
is simple math, isn't it?
