Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

Good to hear the computer is now operational. I sure you'll enjoy the
new one. I've been pleased with my Dell units. Bit of effort
configuring them to personal taste, but the improved performance is a
great reward.

Good luck

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-30 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Hi, PEter -- I did it - hours ago - and sent reply to list,
you and David

It works in Firefox - It doesn't in Netscape 4.6

I had done all that stuff years ago except I didn't know the
location box was a kind of message box
 I guess.

WHen I first got the computer I went through all the display
boxes changing colors and
all the sounds changing some "waves" to an owl sound and
turning off lots of them...
removing tons of "helpful" things from MS word - etc and
changing colors to eliminate
all white backgrounds.

I always go to the control panel for stuff like that -
never occured to me to
consider properties of the desktop.

THe other thing I cant do - well - don't WANT to do, that
people find weird is that I always
work with only one window open at a time at full screen...

Though I used split screens in Kedit in the old days when I
had to to copy pieces of a program from one file to
another.

I've finally got into dragging and dropping files from a
directory into the Nero burning window.

I'm chiling out tonight watching movies on tv - just
finished watching OUR MAN IN HAVANA
on TCM - One of my favorite Guiness films. But I've only
seen it about ten times and not
in the last few years.

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-30 Thread P. J. Alling
Ann, I just tried it on my Win98se box and it works, (If I make the font
too large it makes everything look fugley though). I'll take you
through it step by step.

1.) Right click on your desktop and select properties from the context
menu.
2.) On the display properties dialog select the appearance tab. (you
probably got this far without a problem but I'm just making sure).

In the appearance tab there are a representation of a bunch of windowz
and below that input boxes.

3. Click on "Message Text" in the message box example.

The "Font" "Size" and "Color" controls should become active.

4.) Select the size you want. (Default is 8pts I chose 14 and it made
the information in the mozilla address locator huge.)

5.) Press the Apply button and check to make sure it's what you're
looking for.
6.) Close the dialog by pressing OK. otherwise go back to step 4.

If you don't select the Message Box->Message Text it won't change the
part of the UI you want to effect.

Give this a try:

- Right Click on your desktop and select "Properties",
- Click on the "Appearance" tab,
- Click on the "Advanced" tab,
- Under "Item" select "Message Box" from the drop down list,
- Under font size change it to one your more comfortable with, click
"OK" then "Apply".

This will make your URL bar text, as well as the browser tab labels &
favorite text in Firefox larger.

Now I'm using Windows XP x64 so I don't know if this is valid for Win98.

You did miss on that one:-). But haven't we all taken the wrong fork
at times?

I remember the first time I edited with an Avid operator. It was at
First Edition in New York, probably around 1987, although I'm not
sure of the date. Those pixels were big! But it sure made the process
faster than it was when working on a KEM or Movieola. On the old
machines, we'd edit with the film, so we had strips hanging all over
the room. Sometimes after a ten hour session in the edit room, the
editor could get really testy when his assistant couldn't find the
piece that started with the red car and ended with the lady
smiling:-). Cutting cellulose was no fun.

A lot of the pro editors who work on major motion pictures and big
dollar television commercials use Avid. But the high-end Avid system
includes some hardware as well as the software. I think it's
available for Mac or PC. Premiere used to be available for Mac.

It does seem like smart marketing. But so does Adobe's policy of
offering package deals to colleges and universities at "offer you
can't refuse" prices. Especially now that Adobe has borged Macromedia.

Ok - I did it --

taking a different route - and then REBOOTING

I went to control panel
clicked on display

I was clicking on the sample message box instead of "item"
and scrolling
that was my first mistake.

then I got to the item
made it bigger
clicked Ok (may have forgotten to click apply)
nothing happened.
did it again and made sure I hit apply

then I rebooted - that was the key -
had to reboot to get it to work.

Now it is too big :) :) and of course it made stuff bigger I
didnt want
to be made bigger, but what the hell - now I can see what
I'm typing in
the location box anyway! :)

PEter - the thing I want to enlarge is the text within the
location box...
every thing else on my computer has been enlarged... but no
matter what
program I'm in, the stuff that is , for want of a better
word, underneath
stays the same. I did try what he suggested - it simply
didn't work.

IF i were able to attach my camera to the computer I'd photo
what I mean
I may not be using the correct buzz word for the area I
thought
it was simply called the location box.

I have to get out of here and escape from technology for a
while now.
It really has got me down.

I'm writing a book right now about digital video. We did an informal
survey of working video shooters/editors and it seems that among the
high-end users it's a shootout between FCP and Premiere, with far
more using FCP. This is surprising to me since Avid not only offers
theirs for both Windows and Mac (FCP is Mac only, Premiere is Windows
only), but Avid also has a free version with most of the features you
would need. It's available for both platforms. You can download the
free Avid video editor at:

http://www.avid.com/freedv/

There are also some good tutorials free on their site.

To me this is damned smart marketing. The free version does most
things, but if you want to have all of the pro features and tech
support you have to upgrade to one of their two app packages.

BTW, after our survey we're leaning the book toward FCP and Mac,
although we will be including Premiere, Avid, and a few others just
to be fair.

If cost is a decision-maker (and when isn't it?) then Premiere is the

I have a Compaq desktop machine (p2 300 I think) which has a solenoid
in the chassis. You can set it to lock in the BIOS, and without the
password (or some crafty BIOS hacking) you'd have to drill a hole in
the case to ever get it open again.

I never activated it, because if the BIOS ever crapped out I'd be
completely up the creek. And yes, I have had to open the box to
reset the BIOS a couple of times.

I tried ever enlarged the type in the little box with the

won't enlarge.
and, of course, if I click on that area all it does is take
me to the page
that the URL refers to :)

I'll try your suggestion when I get XP.

- Click on the "Appearance" tab,

- Under "Item" select "Message Box" from the drop down list,
- Under font size change it to one your more comfortable with, click

This will make your URL bar text, as well as the browser tab labels &

Now I'm using Windows XP x64 so I don't know if this is valid for Win98.

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Ann Sanfedele
MItch -
well my young friend, Renzo, did not show up today.
Last time I talked to him he was waiting for UPS to deliver
his laptop
(shipped from overseas)

HE is eager and bright and helpful when he is here, but
isn't so good at
letting someone know that he can't show up.

HE got a windoze 98Sse cd , he told me, when we spoke this
afternoon -- I just asked him
to give me a buzz when he was on his way to my apt.

I can't yell at him too easily because he is the
roomy/fiance of my best friends daughter...
and doing all this stuff for me totally free.

As I a result I got some more sleep today, but little annoys
me quite as much as
people who say they are going to do something and can't at
least say they can't get to it.

I wouldn't mind quite so much if HE hadn't been the one to
say he really wanted to do it
today. sigh.
I could have gone and gotten the disk from him, too
though I preferred to have someone
here for the possible struggle.

Another resource is out of town...
Yet another is a guy I worked with many years ago when I was
his techno idol of sorts in
the market research software stuff. it is all flipped now.

I wish I could buy memory for my brain on the web!

I think you're missing something. OEM's stopped supplying install disks
with W2K. Now everything comes installed on the harddrive. You can
create an install backup set from your computer just in case the HD
crashes but most of the time there's a method, differing between each
manufacturer I'm sure, to restore from a hidden partition on the current
hard drive. Unfortunately you get your original factory installation
back, including all of the free bloatwear.

I called 'em back and asked for the 1 gig of ram - it was
another $50

it comes with a 90 day "trial " of Pc-illin - which
hopefully will protect me until I

There is going to be stuff on it I don't want but hopefully
I can uninstall or just ignore.

Since there will be lots of room, I think I'll just scoot
the icons off my desktop and pretend they
arent there.

Mark - what was the site I downloaded Mozilla firefox from?
or was it Rob that sent me there?

Just incase that is a bettwer way to download it than
transfering from the old machine

Just a bit over the top. I have four Dell systems here (along with a
few older IBM PC's that are mostly mothballed at this time). Two have
Symantec (Norton SW) ; two Have McAffee. All have long term support
contracts. I haven't "wiped the disks" and haven't encountered any
situations that would suggest a cost/effective benefit in doing so. I
gave up playing with PC's about ten years ago, I just want a platform to
run applications on. My experience suggest changing the software
configuration too much could result in grief from the support chain, but
that is just my experience. I haven't had any trouble adding software
--- takes some time now and then, but it gets done.

Each installation/user combo has limits and objectives that need to be
factored into setting up and configuring the system software and support
facilities. My experience suggests some of the generalizations
surfacing here are just a bit counterproductive. IMHO...

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Mitch Conant
Ann:

Good choice on the DELL. I've used Dell for several business clients,
they all seem to be happy with them.

I too, use AVG and LOVE it. I put it on client PCs, use it on all 3 of
my workstations (Win 98SE, NT 4.0 and Win2000) as well as my Win2000
server and my Linux server. I have never had anything get through
(feverishly looking for wood to knock on). I think that as part of the
installation process on the Dell, you have the option of installing
Norton Anti-Virus. I wouldn't do it, I would get AVG from the link below.

Someone else in this thread mentioned a firewall. I have always used the
Linksys Firewall/Switch. The firewall is a BIG part of your security,
the Switch would allow you to connect the 2 computers (if you have an
ethernet port in the old computer - $10.00-$15.00) and share Internet,
Printers, Scanner, etc. Some people swear by the software firewall,
Iswear by the hardware. I do so because a software firewall is
suceptible to the same issues as other software (crashes, being unloaded
behind the scenes, not being loaded at startup, being hacked
(IMO)...etc...). See the link below.

Let me know if you need the Win98SE disk...

Have fun,
Mitch

Which new Adobe applications? Photoshop CS2 installs just fine on
windows 2000. I haven't tried the Lightroom beta though.

In general, anything that works on XP will work on 2k as well.

Elements 4 (and 5, I assume) and lightroom won't install. The error
message states I must have XP. Then the installer closes.

That's common to the corporate models, I'm pretty sure it's not in the
consumer models. It's meant to keep the salesguys from doing someting
stupid (or finder them if they did). Makes IS's life easier if they can

Hehe -
Well as it happens I do this all the time - in elements I
click on adjust color
and a thumbnails pop up to show previews of adjustments with
a sliding scale thingy
for amount.

It is one of the annoyances of tecno-babble that something
as simple as adjusting the
hues and tones needs a non-painterly word such as "curves"

I look at the images and fiddle with brightness, saturation,
hue, color, etc and slide
the levers around until I see what I want sometimes
applying into an area I've lassoed
or hit with my "magic wand", sometimes to the entire image.

I don't mean I do it to every image when "all the time" but
I use all these tools -
The name "curves" just doesn't mean anything to me. Or
channels.

The word 'CURVE' doesn't appear anywhere on my screen when
I'm working in elements.

thanks for that direct explanation, Jack :)

The previous two computers I owned were built that way; find a
good motherboard, fit your own choice of CPU, memory, etc., and
add peripherals to taste. My last purchase was a built-to-order
HP system; with their promotional pricing it was cheaper than
doing it myself, and had everything I wanted.
Nowadays I'd either go the same route or buy a secondhand box;
a friend of mine can find truly excellent deals (such as his
latest accquisition; 14 1U IBM eServers, each with 1GB of RAM,
built-in SCSI, and with processors ranging from 1GHz P3s to
dual Xeons, at an average price of $100 per system).

Personally, I fine no overall usability difference between the two,
and I use both frequently. And I though I do computer tutoring for
both platforms, I get equal calls for help across both platforms. Just
got a phone call an hour ago from a Mac user who's had something stop
working on her system that she needs me to fix this weekend.

Not Adobe Premiere Pro. Photoshop CS2 is fine.

I'm expecting that if I end up teaching a video production course,
Premiere Pro is what will push me into getting Windows Vista.

Uh, that's the problem MS has. They think the main difference with OSX

OSX is not clownish looking as Windows, granted. But its main

2006-09-29 Thread Jack Davis
I didn't check later posts to see if someone answered this, so I'll
touch on it.
"Curves" is a feature that allows the adjusting of color tones. It
permits altering highlights, midtones and shadows in each color
channel.
Useful, for example, in helping correct washed out, over-exposed or
underexposed images. I've messed with it a bit and look forward to its
helping to salvage my images.
Pro FS (CS2) has had this tool for awhile.

Understand there is a new Windows "Vista" operating system either has
been or soon will be available.
This information from my wife who reads Kim Commando every morning.
I might be more curious about it myself if I were setting up a new

Windows is pretty much the same way these days if you buy from a
company that doesn't include "free extras" like Dell. I guess even
Dell works well for most people, judging by their success, but I
really prefer to build my own machine so I can choose my own
components and configure everything just the way I want it.
Not the path for non-geeks, I suppose :)

Ann,

That machine should alright for ya. I would recommend
at least a total of a gig of RAM, however.

I just got the even lower end B110 machine but with a
faster processor and 1 gig of ram. It's working just
fine. Photoshop CS2 is OK on this model, but I only
have it loaded as a backup to my new Mac.

I've never been able to completely break a Dell, and
this is my third. Make sure to have a firewall
installed along with a good antivirus program.

What I want is the button to stop anything from moving on
the screen - which, alas,
may not be possible.

I aint gonna watch no videos on it or listen to music.

RE: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Bill Owens
So far, I'm extremely pleased with it. Looking forward to doing more work
with Elements 5.0. Probably be able to tomorrow after tonight's football
half-time show. I'll shoot in RAW to make it easier to deal with possibly
not so decent lighting

Re: dudes, I'm getting a DELL

2006-09-29 Thread Shel Belinkoff
If you can find the means to do it, upgrading the ram would be most
worthwhile. The operating system and background processes will eat into
that 512mb of ram leaving very little for your programs. I _think_ Windows
eats about 387mb of ram - could be mistaken though,

Is this something you recomend Mark. My NAV 2006 has really slowed my
 machine down.

keeping in mind my 10 thumbs.:-)
