RE: Prices of the new Pentax body and lenses

2016-02-18 Thread John Coyle
VAT is added at each stage in the process, John, so that on import the
wholesaler pays the appropriate percentage (up to 25%, depending on the
country), and then each handler adds the same percentage to their sale price,
after allowing for the recovery of the VAT charged by the person before them in
the line. So at the end, if a thing costs $100 and is handled by three people
each adding 10% in value, the costs and prices (assuming a tax rate of 25%)
increase as follows:

Importer: Cost 100 plus notional VAT of 25, sell for 110 plus 27.50, pay 2.50
to the government (note he will already have paid 25.00 on import).
Wholesaler: Cost 110 plus actual VAT of 27.50, sell for 121 plus VAT of 30.25,
pay 2.75 to the government
Retailer: Cost 121 plus VAT of 30.25, sell for 133.10 plus VAT of 33.28, and
pay 3.03 to the government.

So the ticket price to the purchaser is 166.38, the retailer makes a profit of
12.10, the people actually importing and selling the item have made a gross
profit of 33.10 between them, and the government takes 33.28 on an item costing
100 on import! No wonder governments love this style of consumption tax...

I think the European retailer has to pay VAT on the wholesale cost & then
passes it along in the sales price.

Jaume,
2k in Euro is about 2.2k in USD.
So, depending on the timing and your nearest airport, for the savings of 2.2k -
1.8k = $400 you might be able to have a day trip to NYC and back. :-)

Cheers,

Igor

Not sure if either the D1 or K-10 will sell locally. I have no lenses

best to check completed auctions only, then you'll only get BIN prices if

You can still tell a little bit from the auctions in progress. If it's

Looking at prices on the net, $150-175 for the D1 seems about average,
would include everything but lenses, i want those.

K-10D after looking at Henrys ebay page, prices seem between $200-295.
Would that be about right. Nothing on bh to compare with.

Considering the target market, I'd be willing to bet that sales of

But sadly I think that you could have replaced 50-135's in you last

The DA*50-135/2.8 is a fantastic lens for US$995 MSRP ($1200 Canadian
conversion with current calculator) (as listed on the Pentax
Webstore ... http://www.pentaxwebstore.com/detail/PTX+21660 ) and at
the current US listed prices around $717 to 850 I find, it's a bargain.

Buy from Amazon.com if you want one. Price right now as low as US$717.
See

http://www.amazon.com/Pentax-50-135mm-Telephoto-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000NO5QVG/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1239518360sr=8-1

or
http://tinyurl.com/cfsdv2

I don't see it as worth US $1500 (CA $1800). Not for me. The Olympus
ZD 50-200/2.8-3.5 is an even better performer with a longer range (and
a beautiful, solid tripod mounting foot) and cost me less than US
$800, new. Having had them in my hands together side by side, the
Olympus lens is more robustly made and better finished.

Yes, but close to a 100% price jump.

There's standard business-school math for this. I don't know the
numbers Pentax has, but it's quite possible that the DA* 135 prices
appropriately at that price point.

Remember that Pentax's volume is generally terrible compared to Nikon or
Canon; that tends to push unit prices up.

David J Brooks wrote:

Saw a thread on the doom and gloom forum the other day, about a price
increase on the 50-135.

They claimed a new price of $1700 plus or minus.

So, i just checked out Henrys, our big chain store , and sure as shit,
the price has gone from $999 to $1799 Canadian.

I was thinking of getting the 50-150 if it dropped a bit more, but for
this new price, i don't think so.
Save another grand and i can have a D700.

No brainer for me.

Dave

Not just lenses: flashes too almost doubled in price. The 360FGZ now
goes for what the 540FGZ went for until the end of March, and the 540FGZ
is now $700 Can. I just missed picking one up for $349 at Vistek. When
I saw their price shoot up a couple of weeks ago, I raced over to my
local Mom Pop retailer and bought their very last in-stock 540 for
$399. As the clerk handed it to me he told me that if I want another
one it will be $699. They had one 360FGZ left for $249 and now I'm
kicking myself for not grabbing that at the same time.

A good friend has told me that he's no longer considering the 17-70 F4
or the 35 2.8 Macro which were on his wish list.

It may be some sort of sensible economics math at work here, but it will
severely impact brand loyalty -- as well as sales -- in the sort term.

Yes, I've noticed it too. I'm thinking about getting the 31mm ltd but,
oh no, Adorama aren't listing it at the moment (nor the 77mm, and the
43mm is on back order). :(

I had to wait a month to get the Tamron 17-35 in Pentax mount. My rep
said they were selling out as quickly as they came in. I also had to
wait to get the Sigma P-TTL flash because everyone kept selling out.
I expect that distributors, being naturally cautions and not wanting to
get stuck with stock that wouldn't sell, were ordering Pentax-compatible
product based on past sales numbers and were unprepared for the revival
of interest spurred by the ist-D and DS.

1. People who bought the D care about image

Pentax primes. They began to buy FA primes.

2. Pentax, meanwhile, had stopped production of

3. Existing stocks began to run out. Look at

4. Pentax got caught by surprise. It was in the

Yes, I've noticed it too. I'm thinking about getting the 31mm ltd but,
oh no, Adorama aren't listing it at the moment (nor the 77mm, and the
43mm is on back order). :(

Rob, can I ask you for that contact in Japan again? Maybe they still
have the black 31mm.

replacement insurance typically replaced your items with their new

Hi Bill,

If your intentions are portraiture, don't pass up an m42
85mm if you find one at a good price. You'll need the adapter
and lose auto-aperture; but at portrait apertures you can still
see through it very well indeed ;^)

Bill,

I've seen the M85/2.0 go as high as $400.00+. Good ones these days are
in the $225.00 - $300.00 range. Deals can often be found. Take a look
at the message Antti-Pekka just posted with a list of Pentax items from
Woodmere Camera. (http://www.woodcam.com) They have a nice one for
$275.00. I can attest to the honest and integrity of Woodmere Camera.
While Rich's prices are not always the lowest, he grades honestly and is
quick to satisfy a customer if there are any problems.

There was a bit of list traffic a couple weeks ago on the merits of some of
the smaller-aperture 85mm lenses. I find my 135mm a bit long for some
portrait and candid situations, especially indoors. A nice 100mm or 85mm
might work better. Much as I'd love one of those A* 85/1.4's, that beast is
simply out of my budget. I seem to recall that Shel (?? -- maybe a few
others?) had some positive comments about the SMC-M 85/2. Are these pretty
uncommon, or am I just looking in the wrong places? What prices might these
go for -- say, at a reputable on-line shop?

of the new flash!!! If you could explain to the customs (or go trough
green borderline) that you have already brought this new MZ-S
complete in box with receipts from Poland just to show a friend in
Prague... ;-))

AL And how about this?:)
[link deleted]

WOW! What can I say?

AL Hmmm, anybody knows links to other Internet shops in Czech and maybe
AL Slovakia?

Unfrotunately, not. Even if I live here :) I usually buy used, and new
equipment (tripods, camerabags,...) I buy in small shops where I have
friendly relation with the staff. I have found that most small shops
when at least little friends can lower the price to about just a
little bit over the price of internet shops, so I don't use internet
shops.

P.S.: the link was interesting. Investigating it further.

Yes, from what I saw, the FB-1/FC-1 combo is around
130-175 USD.

The FE-1 appears to be rare. I am aware of only one
auction (on the German e-bay site), which closed at
about DM130 or so (if I remember correctly). Thus,
around 60-75$ seems a fair price to me.
However, there is no "reasonable" price for a rare
