I have read good things about that lens. A bit pricey, but if it will replace 3 other single-focal-length lenses, it's worth it. It looks good in the shot you took here. Re: Leica M9
Amazingly, the people on the LUG who had faulty M8 bodies made excuses for the camera (as in I have no problem as long as I remove and replace the battery before every shot, or Mine sometimes requires turning off and on a dozen times before the shutter will work.). The pro photographers on the LUG got great service. The amateur photographers are treated as nobodies. I had no difficulty finding others with bad M8 samples. I googled the words M8 shutter fault when my first body crapped out, and got numerous hits. When the second one had memory card problems, I had no trouble finding the fix, i.e., remove and replace the battery before every shot. Some of those who claim to never have had a problem are the same ones to say that when their M8/M9 died, the customer service was wonderful. How would they know that unless they had to return it. I have never had a Pentax that died on me, and I have had five Pentax film cameras and now five Pentax digital cameras. And if a Pentax had died, it would not be something that kept me awake at night for weeks at a time. There is no worse feeling than paying off a $4,000 debt on a Visa for a non-functioning camera that is sitting in a drawer. Re: Leica M9
I think that Leica was at a crossroads due to digital catching on among pros. They obviously felt that they waited too long to enter the digital world and were making up for lost time (and revenue). It would not have been so much of a problem had they owned up to the problems and fixed them quickly and quietly. I do think they were overwhelmed by the large number of returns of defective cameras, and Leica USA chose to simply ignore non-professionals (after all, an oil spill that damages a commercial fisherman is much more of a problem than an oil spill that damages a weekend fisherman). But I spent the same amount of money and had the same warranty. Perhaps I should have created some fake letterhead stationary when writing to them. Tony Rose of popflash has told me that he will intervene on my behalf if I have future problems with the M8, but I simply stopped using it. I do appreciate Tony's help, as I didn't buy the camera from him. I have been told that the fellow who ignored all of my phone calls and emails at Leica USA has been reassigned to other duties, so I obviously wasn't the only amateur shooter who was ignored when his camera died after a week. So, things may be better at Leica USA now, but I'll never buy another Leica product as long as I live (and I have sunk over $25,000 into that company over the years). After the 50th time you are told He just stepped away from his desk, you know what it is to be treated like an untouchable. Jeffery On May 18, 2010, at 10:05 AM, Tom C wrote: Wow... Thanks. Like green ghosting? Like the need to put an expensive UV/IR filter on any lens you plan to use on the M8? Do they have that written somewhere? I think that the early problems with the M8 were probably abundantly obvious to BH at the time. It certainly was well documented on the web that many cameras were breaking down very quickly. I bought an Epson 2000P printer soon after they came out. It arrived DOA. I contacted Adorama.com (where I bought it), and they gave me a long list of pedestrian things to do that stretched out for several days (such as make sure that it is plugged in, that I'm not in the middle of a blackout, that there is ink in the cartridge). When they had delayed me for enough days, they told me that I missed the opportunity to return it...the maximum number of days had transpired. They were counting the number of days since the purchase day (on-line), which of course was about 6 days before I received it. So Epson sent me a refurb. I have only had a few problems with Amazon.com. I ordered some reading material after getting stranded in Houston right after Katrina. When I moved back to NOLA in October, it was a bitch getting my shipping addressed changed back to New Orleans. There was no shipping of anything to New Orleans by USPS or UPS for a while, and getting Amazon to ship it to me in New Orleans was all but impossible. To make matters worse, they continued to ship everything to the Houston motel. The other problem was ordering something that was supposed to arrive in one day. I ordered next-day delivery, and they shipped it 2-3 day with the idea that it would probably arrive the next day. It did, but I didn't think I should have to pay for next day when they sent it 2-3 day delivery. Their attitude was what's the difference...you got it in one day. Since then, their customer service has been much better, and I get everything I order 2-day delivery for free. Even compared to amazon Marketplace I always end up paying slightly more. They don't compete down to the last penny. But it is money well spent every time their service goes that extra mile. This is the first time I've ever had to return anything to Amazon. I started buying from them before they had a .co.uk, and shortly after they started in the US, so that's a lot of things I've bought from them. Since hearing about my forthcoming redundancy I did a forensic examination of my spending and I'm quite horrified at how much money I've pushed through Amazon. Greetings, I'm a newbie on the forum. Have been using Pentax off an on since buying my first Pentax Spotmatic back in 1968. Made a regrettable change to Nikon in the mid-70s and found the bodies to be a bit more prone to breaking than my Pentax). Re: K-7 replacement?
I looked at the new Sony FF dSLR, and wasn't impressed by the specs in light of the fact that its normal (50mm) lens is decidedly sub-par compared to the competition. Another concern about FF dSLR is their performance when coupled with lenses originally designed for digital use (which may be optimized for the middle of the frame, but may be pretty poor near the edges of a full frame). Finally, I'm more than happy having my 300mm Pentax lens experiencing a crop factor that makes it seem more like a 450mm lens. Sure beats lugging around a 40mm lens. I do wish that Pentax had kept the *ist dSLR size instead of getting bigger and bigger. The K-7 is really built like a tank, but it is more of a chore to carry than the *ist with a 40mm pancake. Jeffery Miserere wrote: On 29 April 2010 09:22, Tom C caka...@gmail.com wrote: IMO, they need to come out with a full spec pro body that at least competes with a Canon EOS 5D MKII, or even better a Nikon D3X. Tom C. The problem I see, Tom, is that if Pentax do that, they cannot also have a high-end APS-C body out at the same time. I've written this a number of times, but I'll say it again: Pentax is not Nikon, who can have a D300 and D700 out at the same time. If Pentax go FF, they'll have a single FF body, and it will be the top of the line. Below it will be 2 APS-C bodies: A K-x type entry level, and a K200D type mid level. If there were a $1,000-$1,300 top-tier APS-C body, nobody would buy the $2,000 FF body, or at least not in significant numbers to break even.. How would this affect current Pentax users? Sure, a small number would migrate to the FF body, but many like myself would be left without an upgrade path. If Pentax don't release top-tier APS-C bodies, I will probably leave the brand. Unless the FF body is K-7 sized and $1,500, I probably won't consider it. I'm not alone in feeling like this either. With APS-C sensors reaching such good high-ISO performance levels, the case for FF grows weaker with every new sensor released. Using my lenses at the FoV they were intended for is not a reason to go FF as far as I'm concerned, and certainly not as far as the camera companies are concerned, because they want to sell *new* lenses. The time to go FF for camera companies was either no later than 2 years ago (when the low light advantage was there without a doubt), or 3-5 years from now (when prices for FF sensors drop low enough that it makes sense to stick them in almost every camera). But right now we're in a no-man's land for FF: APS-C sensors are starting to perform really well in low light (Pentax K-x, Canon 7D), they're also delivering 14-17MP without problems and will likely reach 20MP soon, not to mention the dynamic range advantage of FF is either gone or disappearing. And APS-C does this at less than half the cost of a FF sensor. I really didn't want to get into a FF vs APS-C debate, because I've found most people treat FF as a religion, which means reason is persona non grata most of the time. Please ignore my post and continue with your regularly scheduled pun thread :-) --M. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: K-7 replacement?
My concern with the Sony was the weak performance wide open, which is sort of counterproductive for a fast lens. Dpreview is the only review I have seen of it. They did feel that it was comparable to the others, when stopped down. The problems with it seem to be exacerbated when using a full frame digital From Dpreview Having reviewed four other 50mm F1.4 lenses of similar design over the past few months, we weren't expecting any major surprises from the Sony version. Sony's 50/2.8 Macro is pretty much best in class for a 1st party normal macro. Their only weak spot for normals is the lack of a FF budget 50mm, which they share with Pentax (as neither currently makes their older 50/1.7 designs). While a lot of Sony types like to complain about the lack of a Zeiss ZA 50, there's nothing wrong with the current option other than it doesn't render similarly to the popular ZA primes. The best 50/1.4's on the market today are the Zeiss Planar (available in K, F and EF mounts, but not A mount) and the Sigma 50/1.4 HSM (available in all common mounts). -- M. My ability to word process was never faster than when I used XyWrite II+ on MSDOS. The entire program fit on one floppy disk and loaded itself completely into memory. In contrast, upon seeing the first Macintosh running in an Office supply store without knowing anything at all about it, one could walk up... grab the single button mouse (which I had never seen before) and it was immediately OBVIOUS what one would do with it. Re: Pentax K-x - What say you?
Larry and Adam, thanks for the replies. I'm very glad to hear about the low light capabilities. I have been using rangefinders primarily for the past 10 years because lack of mirror flap and fast lens availability made low light work possible (at least with film). I have followed Fuji reviews for about 5 years because of their famed low noise at low light levels, but didn't want to switch to the Nikon lens format. The Pentax K-x is priced about the same as a digicam, and I have several fast lenses (Sigma 30/1.4 and Pentax 50/1.4) that I could put to good use on the K-x. The combination of the Sigma 30/1.4 and the K-x is sounding very good it me right now for indoor work. I've been using one for a few months now and overall I'm very impressed by them. I do a lot of low-light work and simply put, the K-x is the best APS-C format camera with regards to high ISO performance (note I've. It's also nice and small and quite responsive. The only real weakness I've found is the metering, the K-x retains the older 16 zone meter which isn't all that reliable. The AF point issue (No AF point illumination in the viewfinder) isn't a problem for me as I simply locked the camera down to the centre point and leave it there, just like every other AF Pentax I've had. Overall, it's a whole lot of camera for the money, but it does have its limitations, primarily the basic build quality, small buffer,AA batteries (Battery life is pitiful compared to the D300 I used to have), no grip, no support for a remote release and poor Live View implementation. -- M. I've had a chance to peruse the Diner Blog this weekend. I very much like the subject matter, and it is nice to be able to click on the images to get them large on the monitor. My only suggestion (and this is very minor and pretty much just my taste) might be to try a thin border around each photo to offset it a bit from the background of the blog. A thin black line might do it. In PS, that is pretty much just making the canvas size a bit bigger and making the overlap black instead of white. I was going to go out and shoot some of the old places on Airline Highway this afternoon after church, but the President is in town to view the oil spill and the freeways were blocked off. It would have been a good day for the shooting as it is totally overcast (no harsh shadows). Re: POTY - nature shot from Louisiana
People who own land on the bayou get a handful of coupons or tickets for hunting alligator each year. They are actually tags that have to be tied onto any alligators taken. The quota given out is enough to curb the alligator population. The modus operandi (at least when I was in graduate school) is to hang a dead chicken above the water on a cable with a giant hook. The next morning, you go out on a flatboat to see who bit. Typically there is a large gator hanging from the hook in his mouth. The boat goes next to them, and they are euthanized with a single gunshot to the cranium. Jeffery On May 3, 2010, at 8:48 AM, Daniel J. Matyola wrote: Gritty image. I'd thought about handing it down to my wife who would like occasionally to learn how to use a real camera, but I hesitate to give her the K10D for the same reasons that I want to replace it, namely: unpredictable/slow autofocus and exposure which can be all over the map. Re: How do you photograph dark skinned people?
You're right, Bruce. Too broad of a generalization. I primarily do street photography. I spent years fighting highlight versus shadow down here, getting chalk and soot results on Tri-X. Pretty soon, I just stopped shooting from 10-4 unless it was overcast (which I like the most). It does wipe out a lot of street photo opportunities, but the people are less sweaty. ;-) I also don't have to futz with lens hoods. These 4-petal hoods make me look so conspicuous, I might as well use a tripod too. It's good to be back on the list again (after a hiatus of the past 12 months or so. The light _source_ may be what it is, but what you do after that makes a huge difference to the quality of the portrait. You may have the sun coming in through blinds on one side of your classroom. You can position your subject closer or further from the window and that will affect light fall-off across their face or body. You can have them face the window or away from it, or any angle in between. If you have them turn their back to the window then position a large white board behind you to bounce soft light into their face, you can get a gorgeous backlight to define their hair and flattering even light to illuminate their features. Do that but have them face 45 degrees to you and you'll get some side light as well. Even a little fill flash from a mini softbox like Walt's will improve the look in a windowless room with overhead strip lights. The software is almost always available in a trial version that isn't disabled during the trial period, it is updated far more often than Windows software, and it is cheaper much of the time. Several of the programs I am using have free upgrades for life. Jeffery On Dec 7, 2010, at 11:43 AM, Kenton Brede wrote: I've decided to purchase a laptop for RAW image processing. Re: OT - Mamiya Cxxx TLRs and TLR in general
I had one back in the 70's. It's a big camera, a bit harder to handle than a Rollei TLR because of the size of the body and the location of the focusing knobs. I would opt for a tripod. It's pretty hard to do any sort of street photography with a TLR viewfinder. You'll need a light meter (which are getting harder to find these days). As you focus closer, it drops to show where the top of the frame for a given focusing distance would be. So you focus and frame, then raise the camera vertically to put the top edge of the frame along the indicator line. The shift is only large when you're working in the very close range, for a normal to wide lens. With the tele lenses it becomes a bit more significant ... best to frame a little loose. Plenty of negative to work with so shoot loose and crop ... :-) Mamiya made a gizmo for the tripod that worked with the indicator too. The indicator had a scale of numbers, IIRC, and you could easily raise the camera with gizmo to the number once you achieved proper focus. For me, the C330 was always a tripod camera. Held with pistol grip and porroflex viewfinder, it was a large and heavy beast to tote around. For any hand-held work, I far preferred a Rolleiflex TLR (which had a more sophisticated parallax compensation built into the viewfinder system albeit for a fixed lens with a more limited close focusing range). I hate Microdol as it is a grain-dissolving developer that robs you of sharpness. XTOL is probably as good as D76 and won't hurt your septic system. They don't sell the XTOL in small packets anymore, so you have to make a bunch. I love Prescysol for just about everything. You mix it and discard it (highly diluted). You can get it from Photographer's Formulary. Get a few syringes for measuring the concentrate. I also love PMK-pyro, another highly diluted one-shot developer, but you have to be pickier with films for that developer. Re: BW film home made processing... now that is cheap (+smartphone helpful apps)
I have always used amber glass because of the gradual hardening of plastic jugs over time. Clorox oxidizes just about everything. I don't know of another substance that would clean them up without affecting the plastic. If you invest in some 500ml amber glass bottles, you can get them squeaky clean, and can fill them up to the tippy top to eliminate the air. One caveat about XTOL...when it goes bad, it doesn't look bad (doesn't get brown). If you develop with it after it has started going bad, you will get extremely thin negatives. I tried using Patterson ascorbic acid developer (the one formulated by the late Geoffrey Crawley). By the time it got from England to the US, it was dead. Kodak's HC110 is a reliable one-shot dilution from concentrate. You wouldn't have to fool around with jugs. It has many of the characteristics of D76. And for every combination of everything, look at www.digitaltruth.com and click on the massive development chart. We used to have a LOT of skunks around the training sites at Ft. AP Hill, and they'd get into the tents. Post animal control recommended the mothballs solution. You'll have to keep an eye on the mothballs to make sure pets children don't get hold of them. I'd talk to your county animal control agency about them as well. Re: Unknow Takumar for Leica M39
I don't see many of those (Pentax in Leica SM). Kevin Cameras in California has a lot of oddball lenses, but only 6 Pentax for Leica screw mount. And all 6 of them are the 43/1.9 (modern). Re: New 12-35 lens on the way
Is there another more socially or technically acceptable way of referring to a digital sensor that is the same size as a frame of film? The use of the term full frame seems to offend some people, but I don't know of an alternative that requires fewer words. I don't know of anyone who ever referred to Prince as the Artist Formerly Known As Prince because it's a hassle. If Pentax were to produce a dSLR that has a digital sensor that measured 24mm x 36mm, what would we call that (without offending anyone's sensibilities)? Re: New 12-35 lens on the way
I agree with you there. They are putting too much into RD of lenses that are not compatible of...wellyou know. That's fine with me. They are making some great strides in their current line of dSLRs. Re: New 12-35 lens on the way
Not intuitive enough. I'm going to stick to full-frame. Or just avoid the subject altogether.
