Another one from the lock at Lanaye. One single hand-held shot, no

Indeed. But if you had seen the state of the historical artefacts when I last
did, you may well have wept. I nearly did. They at least deserved to be
preserved, not left to rot.

The KM folk, who may or may not be in cahoots with the owners of the collection
at Milntown (which is not on public display yet), seem to keep their collection
on the road - I often see old bikes riding in convoy, and grand it sounds. I'm
fairly sure I've seen some of the Milntown horde riding out, too. For me, this
is a better option. Unrestored racebikes are on show most TT and MGP weeks:
the best of both worlds?

Subject: OT: Recovering from Thanksgiving and Black Friday

I hope everyone here in the US had a great Thanksgiving, and is on the
road to recovery.

After a nice traditional meal at home (turkey and much, much more),
with family and friends, we had a full Black Friday (The traditional
start of Christmas shopping in the US). My idea of shopping is going
on line, or doing it the old-fashioned way -- by catalogs.

Nevertheless, yesterday I found myself in the belly of the beast.

In the morning, my wife and her friend hit Flemington (a country town
nearby with lots of factory outlets) for some quick bargains, while I
did some yard work. Then, we headed into the City. On Black Friday.
Insane.

We took the train into The City, then walked from Penn Station the 25
blocks or so to The Park. Broadway was almost impassable at points,
with shoppers, tourists and theater-goers. We had an early -- and
hearty -- dinner at the Russian Tea Room (slightly to the left of
Carnegie Hall, and just south of the park). Then, since we had some
time, we headed over to Fifth Avenue, which was even more festive, and
every bit as crowded, as Broadway. We stopped to enter the confusion
and chaos of the busiest store in the City: the flagship Apple Store
at Fifth Avenue and 58th.
If there is a recession, you couldn't tell from this place; there
was a line of people entering, and we could hardly move around on the
main retail floor, below street level.

We then walked south on Fifth Avenue, past all the expensive fashion
and jewelry stores, to St Pat's and Rockefeller Center, which was also
mobbed. The tree was up but undecorated, the skaters were waltzing on
the ice below the square, and shoppers and tourists bumped into one
another every few inches. Even before the lighting of the big tree,
the decorations were sumptuous.

Finally, we fought our way back to 45th and Broadway, to the Golden
Theater, and the ultimate goal of the evening: Driving Miss Daisy,
with Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones. It is a very good play,
but that is quite besides the point. Watching two of the greatest
actors of our time playing against each other was an overwhelming
experience, and everything we had hoped for.

Finally, the hour and a quarter train ride home, to warm up and loosen
up in the hot tub before collapsing in exhaustion. Quite a day for
three old fogies from Jersey and Baltimore.

stay for another week or so, with the first (only?) follow-up visit scheduled
for next Monday. This is really all quite miraculous considering the recovery
time required prior to laprascopic robo-surgery, but that doesn't make me feel
all that much more comfortable. I won't know more about the cancer until I get
the biopsy results next week, but the surgeon says everything went smoothly, no
issues, no surprises.

The stump is about five feet in front of my front door. It's hard not to
notice things to photograph on it.

I really was trying to photograph the stump, preferably getting a shot of the
stump and the mushrooms. When I started digging it out, I noticed how
wonderfully tentacular the root system is. Last night was my first attempt at
photographing it. My goal is to use light to isolate the roots from the
background, but I'm having a tough time trying to figure out how to do that.

I hope to get back to physically isolating the roots more in the near future.
With more space between them and the dirt, visual isolation may be easier. I'm
very interested in suggestions on how to do this.

Boris, last night it only got down to about 5C, most of the last week it was

Dave, yes, I was going specifically for that B-movie tentacular monster effect.

Subject: New to list / acronyms

Hi, I've been lurking for a few days here. I'm from the Midwest. I
bought my first DSLR about two weeks ago, a K-x with the 18-55mm,
55-300mm lens kit. I've got a 50mm M f/1.7 on the way, as well as a
polarizer and graduated filter. I also picked up a cleaning kit with
rocket blower and a manfrotto tripod and head. No one told me the
peripherals were going to cost so damn much. I feel like I'm
hemorrhaging money. LOL It's sad but true.

I know next to nothing about photography. I've read "Understanding
Exposure" by Bryan Peterson and "The Digital Photography Book" by
Scott Kelby; both have been a good introduction I think. I'm
currently reading "Creative Nature & Outdoor Photography" by Brenda
Tharp. Next on the list is "The Photographer's Eye" by Michael
Freeman. If anyone has suggestions as to which other books I should
be reading, I'm all ears.

I've never used any image manipulation type software other than
Picassa. I'm a Linux user and have evaluated Bibble 5 for a couple
evenings. It's crashed on me a few times and sucks all available
memory and some swap when it imports RAW and builds thumbnails. I
might have to break down and get a MAC at some point, if all Linux
image software is this crash prone. Bibble does have some cool tricks
though. I really like the heal/clone thing but I suppose other
software packages have something similar.

OK, I do have a question:

Is there a page defining the acronyms used here, like: PESO, GESO,
PAW? If not, could someone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Kent

In truth, we're a bit more mature than the others. We've been around for a
dozen years and wore out the hand-wringing thing a while back. I think we've
learned that there will inevitably be problems with anything as complex as a
DSLR, and sometimes we have to be a bit patient while those problems are sorted
out. More importantly, we have other things to talk about: beer, coffee, guns,
personal issues, etc. Oh, and pictures. We actually talk about pictures much
more than we talk about the cameras that take the pictures. That's a healthy
thing.

The most commonly-seen wording is:

"When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout"

Lazarus Long/Robert A. Heinlen - "Time Enough for Love", 1973

but the couplet didn't originate there - it was in common usage in
the U.S. Navy (probably where RAH picked it up) 25 years earlier.

Just checked on my repair status at C.R.I.S. and I was amused/worried by the
entries in the field labeled "Equipment Condition". It's clear that I don't
baby my camera - I *use* it: "SCRATCHES; DINGS; SCUFFS; BOTTOM CASING
EDGES/CORNERS DINGED/WORN; GUNK UNDER BATTERY DOOR & IN SCREWS ;SCUFFS
AROUND FOCUS DRIVE RING"

Ouch! And that's with only a half-year of use. FWIW, I have no idea what
the "gunk" is.

After some processing delays and a bit of phone tag, I finally got the
pathology results today from my prostate surgery 2+ weeks ago. All very
positive - the cancer was contained within the body part they removed,
absolutely no sign of any spread beyond that location. I had been quite
optimistic from the beginning based on comments from several urologists and the
fact that my cancer was identified quite early. But 'tis a relief to have
confirmation!

I have now become an advocate for periodic physical exams. I was lucky - I had
been many years without a physical, but for no particular reason decided to
have a full work-up this summer. Listen to the voice of experience guys! Go get
a PSA test.

And now back to the celebratory bottle of wine . . .

Reading that blog I see that I'm not alone in my frustrations with
camera straps. I hate anything, including camera's and ties, hanging
from my neck. The short standard camera neck straps are extremely
annoying. The camdapter hand strap combined with a Optech shoulder
strap is what I use now. I'll try the camdapter sling and the next
option is the Luma.
Maybe mounting an L bracket is an option but L brackets on the K20
block the little door on the left side...

I used to have one of those - excellent as I recall. I passed mine on
to my son after I picked up a Tokina ATX 24-40. Sadly, the Tokina is
cactus but he still uses the Sigma from time to time on his K20D.

I /love/ my F-2. My cat did something untoward to one, so I got

situation I think you originally described, but it's an awesome bag, and
you can put a weekend's worth of fresh clothes in the parts not occupied

The idea is that air is allowed to enter the tank to replace volume
sucked out by the ink. We were basically trying to suck a fart out of a
dead dingo with it's mouth taped shut.

Live and learn eh, Stef knows how to properly install a tank now. And to
rub the salt in, he's getting seriously good with the pics. He was
printing out some Prague architecture and I'm standing there just

Evenin all.

But in the case of the person who colourized this photo:

I say, "string him up!"

When I was answering Darren Addy on another thread, I was looking for

doing a Google search I came across this (there were a few others that

Why would anyone do this?

for now, yes, bring a supply of large ziploc bags. whenever going from
cold to warm, put your gear in a ziploc first so as to reduce/avoid

I shot Grace tonight in a nearly dark room, with illumination provided mainly
by an iPad screen. k-5, DA* 60-250/4, f4, 1/20th, 75mm, ISO 8000.

The K-5 with the new firmware easily locked focus. The focus assist light
blinked, which probably helped. Of course it always seemed to focus well in low
light without the firmware upgrade.

The hugely expensive Novoflex adapters are only really necessary with
Pentax lenses that do not have an aperture ring. They allow manual
adjustment of the aperture by providing a secondary ring which moves
the iris actuator mechanism, similar to but more flexible than what I
used to do with the DA21 and DA70 when adapted to the L1 (I just stuck
a little museum putty between the iris actuator and the adapter to set
the lens opening I wanted to use).

It has nothing to do with AE ... No lens adapter made that I've seen
does the auto-iris thing. Auto Exposure is supported with any adapter
in aperture priority mode: you set the lens opening you want and the
camera sets the shutter speed to match it. Camera's don't need
aperture position information to meter correctly that way.

If Dune novels were about Svalbard, the planet of snow instead of
Arrakis, the planet of sand, then this could have been an excellent

Re: Why no videos?

2011-03-20 Thread drd1135
I'm not interested in doing videos. Nothing wrong with it, I'm just a still
life shooter. To be honest, I usually don't like looking at them either.

Subject: Why no videos?

Hello list,

There seems to be quite a number of you folks out there who now have
newer DSLRs with video capabilities. It's been a year or more since
these cameras came online but I don't see any VideoESOs flying past in
the PDML.
Granted, I don't check the list as often as I used to and I don't read
nearly as many of your messages as I once did (I AM still watching you
though...Cotty... and Frank... and Doug) but I figured by now video
submissions would be a common occurrence around here.

Is video a gimmick feature that you just don't use?
Are your videos too racy? (let us judge ;)
Is making decent videos just too hard?
Or are you guys just too much the "old dog" type or even "purists"?

For my part, having at least six video cameras lying around the house
(I'm actually surprised by this number but I'm counting the cell phones
and P&S cameras + 1 "Flip" style camera), I find that the same problems
that have plagued us since the days of film-based home movies. Just
rolling during family events and outings produces lots of crap footage
that nobody really wants to edit into a package that anyone besides
Grandma would want to watch.

So, Why no VESOs, y'all?

Cory

Just a reminder the that PUG theme for April is 'Memories of
Kodachrome'. So far just 2 submissions plus 2 for the Open Gallery.

So soon we forget

You can, of course, interpret the theme as loosely as you think you can
get away with. And there's always the Open Gallery.

OT but just thought i would share.

The survey company i worked for used Leica equipment for about 99.9%
of their work. Proven reliablility and the transits and total stations
worked at -35C.
In 1994, the powers that be thought they would save money and buy into
the Sokkia system of total stations. Less money, did almost the same
job, but with more steps to get to the results.(almost like a Canon
Dslr menu setup)

They had a Q&A with the party chiefs and the one question i asked the
sales rep was, "do they work at -35C.??"

Answer, "They should"

Result, they did not.

PS. I am at K-7 level. :-)

PPS. Larry, to answer seriously, besides the color boost that you've already
done, you can play with suppressing the highlights and bringing up the
shadows, decreasing the contrast, and playing with the curve.
Or, if you have a PS, - to separate the photo into (two?) layers,
and change their brightness separately.

I was asking similar questions on PDML back in Dec of 2007 or Jan of
2008.
Here is an example of the shots I was dealing with:

You read that correctly: I prefer spending my money on new camera
equipment rather than on travelling to places worth photographing.

Love the 40LTD for it's field of view, hate the lens for everything else
so
I decided that perhaps a 43 LTD was in my future, and probably sooner
rather than later.

Looked on Adorama's website and thought the price was OK, especially
since the Canadian $ is a few cents more valuable than the Greenback, so
I ordered one.
And the day it arrived, I noticed that Adorama had raised the price a
hundred and fifty bucks over what I paid.
Somehow I luck out quite often on these things.
Anyway, it seems like an OK lens.
And winter here appears to be no longer hanging on like a wet turd on a
dog's behind, so I might actually go out and use it one of these days.

Something I first learned about working in the high end audio game in the early
70's. It refers to comparing two items by switching back and forth between
each. Speakers, or any component in a audio chain from source onward, In this
case, having each of the two images of the tulip stacked on top of each other,
and switching back and forth. I probably should have written it as A:B to make
it more clear.

okay -- i'll bite; i find Erwin Puts' essay to wishy-washy; it's
internally contradictory; he seems to romanticize film process as if it
were purely intuitive, yet he then warns against "common sense"

Puts seems to define professionalism as technical mastery (to me it is
as much about ethics, efficiency and emotional detachment), but
accepting his definition, i would disagree with him overall that
technical mastery must conflict with craft

this is hardly unique to photography -- i think of how a grounding in
CPU instruction sets and binary logic, of which i'm rarely conscious
these days, gave me confidence and trained my mind for much more
abstract programming; and i think of how my rudimentary technical
knowledge of sailing has held me back despite a strong intuitive sense
of the helm from an entire teen-hood of intense practice

i think there are many valid paths; one wonders if Puts' self-expressed
attunement to film and exposure came about without any rigorous
technical work ... that can happen, but when it does it usually comes
from intense, if intuitive, practice and/or that unconscious genius
which silently computes and internalizes technical knowledge for a few
lucky people (as it struck me when Bob Sullivan recently commented that
Gallia's "gonna be mighty good by the time she's a teenager, and she
won't really know why.")

so genius can "take care of it", practice can breed intuition without
technical understanding, and study of details can allow one to rise
above details; or any combination thereof

Yes, in the following sense. My optometrist asks me what my intended
use for the glasses is, I say "computer monitor", he gets me to sit in
front of an LCD monitor as I would normally, measures distances and
adjusts the prescription accordingly. Voila! "monitor glasses".

I did have to change optometrists when the crusty old guy couldn't
understand my request. The new guy said, of course! Knew exactly what I
