Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Beta version of SvrPowerControl

2009-11-02 Thread Innocence

After using countless hours getting the WOL setup working I've finally
given up on SqueezeBox Server 7.4.x.

I deleted 7.4.1, installed SqueezeCenter 7.3.3, downgraded firmware on
controller and blocked mysqueezebox.com + squeezenetwork.com in my
router to prevent further accidental upgrades.

As suspected everything now works perfectly - WOL and all. And the
controller menus are far more responsive than they were on 7.4.x.

I really really hate to give up and go back, but 7.4.x is simply still
too beta I'm angry that they're using ordinary users to discover
function-breaking bugs, and at the same time don't respond to
bug-reports.

Anyway, SvrPowerControl is not to blame for any of this of course, and
it's now running flawlessly :)

A lot of QNAP users are having this problem. It feels like the
processor is overloaded and cannot decode and re-encode the stream in
realtime.

To lighten the processing load but this will increase network traffic -
try disabling the encoding of AAC into Flac. So in WebUI
Settings/Advanced/FileTypes disable AAC-MP3 and AAC-Flac and then see
if the stream plays.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-02 Thread majones

I have a QNAP TS-119 running Squeezebox Server 7.4.0 with SSOTS 4.1.
iPlayer plays BBC live streams fine but not BBC Listen Again streams.
The server log errors are as follows:

Warning:[00:29:43.4000] 'apps/bbc/index.html' is not the same as

[SlimDevices: Plugins] RE HELP! Iplayer Squeezecenter 7.4 outside UK

2009-11-02 Thread jackleaves

Firstly, my apologies if this is covered eésewhere, but I am not that
technical and am getting a bit confused...

I live outside the UK (Switzerland) and have rcently downloaded
Squeezecenter 7.4 to work with my squeezebox. I love listening again to
BBC radio programmes, and I soon realised AlienBBC would not work, so
got rid of it and have tried the Iplayer plugin instead.

However when I have tried to apply the plugin, I keep getting the
message in the plugins list that 'Iplayer is incompatible with this
version of Squeezecenter - Please update'

This is difficult as I can't find any other versions of Iplayer - or is
it asking mt to update Squeezecenter which I can't as I have the latest
version.

Hope this makes sense, would appreciate any simple technical
explanations as to what i can do!! :-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC vs BBCiPlayer plugins

2009-11-02 Thread bpa

I believe a QNAP should be able to play AAC streams provided

1. The faad is built using the fixed point option
2. the AAC streams are played as PCM and not transcoded into MP3 or
FLAC

I believe The Sheevaplug processor has no floating point which will
mean that any transcoding into MP3 or Flac could be a significant load
and may not deliver the performance you expect (e.g. may be able to
handle one player but not multiple)

faad, flac and lame should be benchmarked to see whether they can do
encoding/decoding in realtime.

Very frustrated - I'm a music fan who just wants to use his piece of

would appreciate any help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-11-02 Thread bluegaspode

Bradley;480694 Wrote:
Use one graphic for each non-current day (you can update the non-current
day graphics every few hours like the current day, to capture a change
 in forecast

But thats not possible with the current data-feed (the only free one
that I'm allowed to use is wunderground).
I get a feed for the current condition with one icon + temp.
I get a forecast feed (including the current day and the next two) with
high/low-temp + TWO icons.
As I don't know which of these two icons is better ('icon' or
'skyicon'), I just render them both.
So as much as I'd like to just show one icon, from my point I'm just
not able to do so ?

Also 'merging' the forecast of the current day (high/low-temp) with the
big-icon would result in a loss of information. Where should I put the
(two) icons of the current-day forecast?
Just omitting both icons wouldn't be good as well I really want to know
how the current day will develop ?

So actually I'm quite happy with the distribution:
*BIG*: current situation - Big Icon + Temp + Humidity + Date + Time
*3x SMALL*: forecast (current day, day + 1, day +2) with high/low temp
and two possible icons.

With your suggestions I could change it to:
*BIG*: current situation + forecast: Current Temp, Forecast Low/High
Temp, Forecast Icons (two toggling), current date, current time.
Icon of current Condition would be omitted.
*3x SMALL*: forcast (day+1, day+2, day+3) with high/low temp and two
possible icons (toggling).

What do others think ?
Should we merge the forecast of the current day into the 'big' area ?

amatala;480595 Wrote:
Actually if I understand this correctly, I do not need Trackstat.
I only need DynamicPlaylist and SQLPlaylist because the LastPlayed and
PlayCount info is already stored in the standard SqueezeCenter database
 - this is enough to write some custom least recently played SQL in
order to get the least recently played tracks with the smallest play
 count.

It depends on what you mean with least recently played.

If you mean Tracks that haven't been played at all recently a custom
SQL statement together with SQL Playlist + Dynamic Playlist will do it.

If you mean Tracks that have been played least number of times during
the last month you will need TrackStat because then you will have to
use the track_history table provided by TrackStat that keeps history of
exactly when a track was played. Standard Squeezebox Server database
just remember the total play count and the last time a track was played.
With the TrackStat track_history table you can calculate a play count
for last month.

 the fast TS-119 processor.

Speed is relative - 500MHz and no FPU is not fast when decoding and
re-encoding. Do you have AAC-MP3 and AAC-Flac disabled ?

Since you are in the UK - the AAC streams you get are 128k. Are there
any error message in the log. There is a peculiar problem since Sunday
with AAC streams in the UK - it looks like a BBC server issue. A
workaround is to disable BBCiPlayer AAC - then you willplay the MP3
streams with no trasncoding.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunesUpdater does not find track

2009-11-02 Thread Lobotomizer

Thanks, this solved my problem! I checked in iTunes and another album
had the alternative spelling of the artist name. So I made them
consistent, rescanned the library, and iTunesUpdate can find the track
now. Still think it is odd that it (is this the plugin or SC itself?)
considers these the same artist, tag issues like this are easier to
track if you simply see the artist popping up twice in the list. Anyway,
glad it's fixed.

While checking the logs it looks like there is another issue though. I
see it starts timing the song, and after the song finished, there are a
lot of exceptions in the log like the one below:

There are several of these. In the end it stops timing and marks the
track as played so the end result is ok. I see similar exceptions in my
scanner log, where they seem to abort the scan prematurely (Merge
various artists fails in seemingly random spots). From the stack trace
this does not look iTunesUpdate related, should I follow this one up in
another forum?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] RandomMix with Least Recently Played Tracks

No, I don't need anything that complex.
I would simply like a Random Mix which picks up the tracks with the
lowest PlayCount in my collection. In a first phase I don't even care
about LastPlayed because I still have thousands of tracks with 0 plays -
so I want the Random Mix to play those first.
When everything will be played at least once, then I could select those
with the lowest PlayCount first and then order them by LastPlayed - in
this way I would have a better chance to listen to music I tend to
overlook.

I heard that with 7.3.4 you won't be prompted to upgrade to 7.4 even if
you connect to the SqueezeNetwork. It might be worth a try.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: SqueezeIR - A Generic Infra-Red Remote Control Applet for the Duet's SBC

2009-11-02 Thread indifference_engine

This is a great application and fills a big hole in the Duet offering
(e.g. I don't understand why none of the Logitech Harmony remote
capability isn't already ported to the Duet considering how it much it
cost -- sorry I digressed.) However, my attempts to convert LIRC
configuration is without success and downloading the files via ssh
farily cumbersome when the Duet sleeps, then wake-ups but defers
 connecting etc.

This is likely to be a very (very) popular application if your able to
provide a version that: reads LIRC configuration files and is
downloadable via the app installer. I'm not sure it's worth the time and
effort to build a parser for the SqueezeIRData.txt file that spits out
syntax errors. Instead, just have the solution focus on pulling remote
codes from popular sources such as Lirc. ... That's my five cents
towards providing feedback on what is an excellent Duet application.

I like Erland's suggestion of using Squeezecenter w/IR blaster etc that
can learn remote codes then pass them onto your Duet app. Given the
number of remotes on the market it's a good idea.

I agree. I shouldn't really have had to write this applet but I love a
challenge ;)
The next work-in-progress version can read LIRC natively and uses xml
for configuration (easier to understand than the current textfile but a
bit wordier). I'm told that irBlaster stores its learnt commands in
LIRC format then it should work with that too but I haven't got that far
yet.

I will eventually get the applet into a repo and have it downloadable
as an app but it will still require some manual intervention as you will
have to add the lirc files and map the ir codes to the keys of your
choice. I would ideally like to be able to do all of the config via an
SC plugin but as SC SqueezePlay don't use the same scripting language
I would have to learn yet another programming language.

Like bluegaspode said, which lirc file have you got problems with?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunesUpdater does not find track

2009-11-02 Thread Phil Meyer
Thanks, this solved my problem! I checked in iTunes and another album
had the alternative spelling of the artist name. So I made them
consistent, rescanned the library, and iTunesUpdate can find the track
now. Still think it is odd that it (is this the plugin or SC itself?)
considers these the same artist, tag issues like this are easier to
track if you simply see the artist popping up twice in the list. Anyway,
glad it's fixed.

I believe that the Squeezebox Server scanner strips out punctuation from artist
name tags to create a version of the name used for searching and uniqueness
matching, rather than the artist name. So where the artist name differs only
in diacritic characters or punctuation, these names are seen as the same, an
one version of the artist name is taken as the name to report in the
application. I think it's the first version of the artist name tag that is
scanned that is used in the music library (and each time you rescan the
library, you could get a different result as it could pick a different order to
process files). You cannot correct tags and scan for new/changed files - the
only way to fix it is the painfull process of finding the difference in tags,
fix, and then do a full clean+rescan.

You may want to add your feelings to bug 10324
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10324) and vote, or create a new
bug (this bug was about diacritics, but the same seems to apply to punctuation
too).

While checking the logs it looks like there is another issue though. I
see it starts timing the song, and after the song finished, there are a
lot of exceptions in the log like the one below:

That could be the common issue of a firewall/virus scanner blocking access to
*.myd file types.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPlayer Won't Play BBC Listen Again on QNAP

2009-11-02 Thread bpa

I think the line 131 error is not significant as it emanates from the
Radiofeeds App and the BBC App - neither of which are related to the
BBCiPlayer plugin. The Apps are supplied as part of SBS by Logitech. The
BBCiPlayer plugin is a 3rd party plugin and not an App.

The BBCiPlayer problem is affecting many QNAP users who are using SSOTS
so it is not clear where the problem is originating.

Disabling AAC in BBCiPlayer settings should result in MP3 being sent
directly to play and so avoid transcoding - yet nothing happens which is
strange.

Canb you do a log with the following enabled
plugin.bbciplayer.parser DEBUG
plugin.bbciplayer.rtmpDEBUG
player.source INFO

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Solved: hibernation problem on the DNS-323

2009-11-02 Thread yannick

A known problem of running SBS on a DNS-323 is that the disk never
hibernate.
Some time ago I had presented in this post
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=386614postcount=110) a
simple solution to make the server start/stop automatically when a
client connects to it. This solution involving the SvrPowerControlPlugin
(see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=48521) and a simple
script listening for a connection on the port used by SBS basically
worked and the script was largely improved by Sydney on his blog
(http://bfg100k.blogspot.com/2009/05/on-demand-startstop-squeezecenter.html)
but it also had a drawback: when you try to connect a squeezebox to a
sleeping server using this technique, you have to wait about 2min for
the server to be up before you can hear music. This is a trade-off to
save energy and the lifetime of your hard-disk, but it is not really
comfortable.
After having posted my technique I was busy on other things and hadn't
looked again at this until shortly when I tried different approaches to
get the disk sleep without this drawback.

The first thing I tried was to move the ffp plugins to an USB stick.
There are several ready to use scripts on the internet to do that
easily. I used this one
(http://forum.dsmg600.info/t3203-setup.sh-script-%28and-documenntation%29-mount-root.html)
as well as the additional explanations there:
Moving ffp to an USB stick doesn't solve the hibernation problem with
Squeezebox Server, because the swap file is still on the disk. But it
makes ffp self contained on the stick (you can remove the stick to boot
without it), and allows the disk to stay down until you really need it.

The next thing I tried was to move the swap file to the USB stick.
There are good instructions there
(http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewtopic.php?id=3400) explaining how to do
it. The result was disappointing: it removed the disk accesses that
prevented the hibernation, but the read rate of the USB stick was so
slow that everything ran at a felt pace of 10% the original speed of the
system. Maybe the problem is that I used the cheapest 2Gb stick I could
find, but I didn't want to invest more, since it is quite probable that
the stick wouldn't last very long with the constant write operations
caused by the swap. So I gave up that idea. I kept ffp on the USB stick
but with a swap on the disk.

I finally looked a bit deeper in my original idea of waiting for client
activity to start the full server and ran some tests to find a way to
reduce this 2min waiting time before the server is up. My idea was that
instead of running a small program starting the full SBS when clients
connect, I could start at least a part of SBS up to a point that doesn't
cause swap activities. During these tests, I found out that the real
problem that made the disk wake up are the constant communication
between SBS and MySQL (apparently 1 query every 30s). That's how I came
to the following solution:

- Instead a starting a dummy program listening on the port 3483 and
starting SBS when a connection is detected, I start SBS until a point
where it is at 95% initialized, but the network activity hasn't started
yet. Then I freeze the execution at that point until a connection is
detected on port 3483 (like with the old technique). SBS in this frozen
status doesn't prevent the disk to swap. A part of goes to the swap,
because it is too big to fit in memory, but since it sleeps, it is never
read back from the swap before a connection is detected. Once a
connection is detected, the initialiation of SBS is resumed and at the
end the server is exactly in the same state as if it had been started
normally. The difference between this approach and the old technique is
that instead of having to wait 2min for the who server to come up, you
only need to wait a couple of seconds for the last 5% of the
initialization to start the network activity.
Later, when all clients are idle, the SvrPowerControl plugin is used to
connect all clients to MySqueezeBox.com and restart the server which
comes back in this sleeping state initialized at 95% until a client
connects again.
The drawback of this technique is that it requires a small change in
the code of SBS, but the change is so minimal that it can be done by
anybody.

Here is the procedure to follow:

1)# Prerequesites
My starting point is FFP 0.5 and SBS 7.4.1 installed from the fonz
packages (http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.5/) on an USB stick. I
use the option of the USB script rebooting off the USB stick, since it
is supposed to save more RAM (see explanation under
http://forum.dsmg600.info/t3203-setup.sh-script-%28and-documenntation%29-mount-root.html).
The firmware of my DNS323 is 1.05. I am pretty sure that the same
technique would work even if ffp is not installed on an USB stick, but I
didn't test.

2)# Install the SrvrPowerControl plugin
- Telnet your DNS323

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] NPR Plugin - Not working

2009-11-02 Thread boikej

The NPR Web site tells listeners to write to podca...@npr.org to ask
them to add your favorite podcast. I'm not hopeful this will have
short-term consequences, but it can't hurt to voice our support for All
Things Considered and other programs unavailable as podcasts.

As more devices get Internet connectivity and browsers, their choice to
stream ATC on the Web site but withhold it from a podcast becomes
awfully arbitrary, doesn't it?

So for near-term, is there any work-around to get All Things Considered
back where it belongs -- on my stereo? ;)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Music Information Screen overlapping text

2009-11-02 Thread SamS

Hi,

Love this plugin, but I often have this problem. It was made even
worse tonight by my addition of a new Boom to the family.

When I was initially started configuring MusicInfoScrn tonight, I
noticed there were two black fields/displays for both Screensaver and
Screensaver when powered off. The secondary black field for each showed
big titles or time.

Now, they've overlapped with the initial black field/display, and I
can't remove the big text from either screensaver!

This has happened in the past with both my SB3 and Transporter, I
cannot remember how to fix.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] NPR Plugin - Not working

2009-11-02 Thread vikasa

I contacted NPR and they responded that that will correct the problem.

Strangely enough, thin.npr.org still shows the full graphics version
but now the SB plugin has started working again!

I am not sure how this plugin is implemented but I like the fact that
individual segments in ATC and other programs can be played and there is
also that Play All Items option.

Regarding podcasts, as we discussed at
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=70611 both SB and the
audio source/server should support pausing/resuming, seeking and proper
playlist management, that will be great. Until then, plugins like these
which appear to screen scrape the text-only interface are a godsend!

Yes it's possible with some limitations.

Take a look at this page:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Setup_support_for_ratings
(Section Configuring iTunes as the rating storage should be most
interesting)

Unfortunately, two way synchronization gets pretty complex when neither
iTunes nor Squeezebox Server natively supports synchronization with
other applications.

If the above page doesn't solve all your problems, let's continue any
further discussion regarding this in the 3rd party plugins section.
