I'm unable to connect to Radio 4 and Radio 4 Extra live AAC streams all

The plugin updated a few days ago (at least I think it was the BBC
plugin, I've still not found a way to tell which plugin is being
updated)

I tried it again. It resulted in another BSOD and required another

which means this restore may have destabilized my system. Unfortunately
I don't think I'll be able to test that route anymore. I don't know if

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Wave Input plugin v1.00

Last night I thought I would give it another go and I tried connecting
the laptop by wire again. I ended up screwing everything up so bad I
got blue screen of death errors every time I logged in after about a
minute of use. I tried going back to a restore point which failed which
caused me to not be able to log into Windows at all. Today I downloaded
a Windows 7 disk and did a system restore from there and now I'm back
up again.

I'm a little hesitant to try connecting by wire again on this computer.
I had to reinstall SBS after the system restore so I installed 7.5.4.

I don't know if, like you said, the router is dying or not. But it
shouldn't be because it's brand new.

AFAICT rrand's SBS is on a laptop wirelessly connected to router and
the player was also connected using wireless. The wavin stream is an
internet stream whereas playing other Flac was from the SBS disk.
Playing an internet stream and using wavin to stream to player will
make more use of the network than streaming Flacs file.

My first instinct would be to test with another router as a "dying"
router can be a source of errors.

> I'm well aware no one believes me (except for me myself)
PasTim, I know you have a real problem which could be investigated
further (e.g. I have a version of socketwrapper which produces data
throughput logs ) but I'm not optimistic a solution will be found and
so it is better to use your time enjoying music.

I give up & give in. Nothing I hear says why rrand experiences
problems with wavin but not other flacs. Network problems presumably
apply in either case. If he has problems with wavin, there's an issue
related to (but not necessarily caused by) wavin. It may be a general
problem but there's got to be a reason why it manifests itself to the
listener with one sort of traffic and not another.

As far my wavin problem was concerned I could see the flac message
being sent from the PC to the Touch (by looking at the Microsoft
Network Monitor, and graphically using Task Manager, and by process
activity). I could play a 30 second track. See the data go out. Wait
for the Touch to play it, and see no more data being sent after the
first batch. The Touch just didn't play them for tens of seconds up to
2 minutes (at one point I thought the data could be going out to the
internet and back in, but I proved that wasn't true).

I'm well aware no one believes me (except for me myself), but I
repeated the experiment and I believe in the evidence. I just don't
have a theory to explain it, nor to explain my solution. :-)

Life is full of surprises. Just as well really.

rrand ran the SBS Network test where TCP packets are generated from
inside SBS with no music source. The test had errors even at low
speeds and the the level of errors seem to vary. Wavin was not
involved.

Wavin depends on PC audio driver and the PC audio subsystem which can
do weird things (e.g. resampling, add sound effects) depending on the
audio hardware. The "wavin2cmd" application justs copies bytes from a
Window PCM stream. The SBS transcoding uses the socketwrapper.exe and
named pipes. Socketwrapper had to be rewritten because many security
s/w app thinks "named pipes" are non safe and so they "examine" the
bytes - sometimes holding onto bytes for a indeterminate periods. Some
users have have adjusted (or 3rd part apps have done) the Windows TCP
settings in the registry and this can also cause odd problems.

There are so many variables with Windows that tracking the down the
problem PasTim experiences really depends on the user themselves
tediously changing one things at a time to find the critical element.

Not doubting your expertise, but I'd like to make sense of the reported
problems with only one type of playback. Maybe when using wavin it's
more "real-time", in which case a loss is more likely to create a
problem than with a file on disk that can be read again if necessary.
I'll be interested to know the source of the sound rrand is using for
wavin.

I used Microsoft Network Monitor to look at snapshots of network
traffic, which showed me where some of my other problems lay. rrand
might want to use that to look at the traffic in more detail.

Less than perfect in Ethernet is unacceptable. A 1% or 2% packet loss
can cause catastrophic issues due to exponential back-off / retries.

Such problems would typically be experienced by users, for example, on
web page loads that hang while other network traffic appears to be
fine. Users will Stop the page load, hit refresh, and notice it loads
w/out issue the next time.

(btw. PasTim, I've written a number of high-performance NIC drivers for
*nix systems, and understand how link partners negotiate.).

I went through a range of checks on my PC (easily powerful enough - it
ships out 24/96 PCM files with no problem), security software
(including disabling it), using MP3, etc. The only thing that would
make wavin work on my PC with my Touch was using PCM. I had, on
occasion, 2 minute delays between the source and the Touch playing.
The data seemed to go out to the Touch (according to the logs) but it
didn't play for a long time. All I know for sure is that something
very strange can happen with wavin.

So I have a system that works, but have no idea of the cause of the
original problem. This nags at my brain, but I try to ignore it as much
as I can.

rrand may have a less than perfect network, but it isn't obvious to me
why it only affects wavin. No matter, if improving the network fixes
it, then fine.

rrad has a basic network problem as the network test proved. It is not
related to wavin or anything else.

If there are problem with Flac but not PCM - I think the problem would
be related to the transcoding process such as processor not powerful
enough (unlikely with modern x86 CPUs) more likely is something is
affecting in ter process comms (from wavin2cmd to Flac) using Pipe. You
could try set Wavin to use MP3 rather than Flac and I would expect to

Agreed. However, it is important to know that such settings can (but
may not) make matters worse, and if at all possible one should use a
setting that includes autonegotiation. I believe (but can't prove)
that on systems where there is no separate option, autonegotiation is
included all the time.

What is still very puzzling is why some systems have problems with
wavin using flac transmission, but not playing other flacs. This is
true for rrand as well me. (I managed to get myself into an additional
but separate set of problems by sending flacs from my library in PCM
format.)

Could the wavin problem be related to some form of duplex handling
issue - receiving over the internet and sending out to the
Boom/Touch/whatever at the same time?

rrand - what is your music source when using wavin?

PasTim, different NICs and drivers provide different settings for
allowing user's to configure NIC speed, duplex and auto-negotiation.
For example, mine does not have a separate setting, one each for a
speed/duplex setting with and without auto-negotiation.

The more important point is to understand the link partner's
capabilities.

The problem that was trying to be tested and excluded (if I recall
correctly in your case, and for some others) was that certain NICs and
their drivers did not reliably support gigabit Ethernet on Windows 7,
particularly x64, and thus must be downgraded speed-wise to 100mbit.
The nVidia 4 chip series was just such a platform, as are certain
Realtek chips. Other people had problems with TCP checksum
offloading.

There were also some wireless connectivity issues with DLink's DIR655
and DIR855 models and some of the Logitech music devices. The duet
would not maintain a connection to a DIR855 in the same room.

So the suggestion to try was to a) remove wireless entirely, and b)
reduce the Ethernet connection rate as necessary. It is not clear
which tests have been performed yet, and which variables have been
eliminated.

iOS 5 is out for developers now. Just wondering if one of my favorite
apps is compatible. :)

As far as I know, iOS 5 won't be out until the fall.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] foobar2000 formatting aka tagz for SBS

2011-06-08 Thread verdemar

Thanks Erland, I already use those plugins, and they are great!

The formatting strings of fb2k are very powerful, so they would open up
lots of new possibilities.
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Title_Formatting_Reference

Some of the things I have in mind that I don't think are possible are
things like formatting conditional on genre and/or path (to have
different formatting for say, classical and pop music), changing case,
replacing characters in combinations of several fields, for instance
showing just the two last digits from a year instead of full
date/year.

Thanks for the advice about registering a new title format. I haven't
really looked into customizing squeeze play, are the defined title
formats not used there?

I am primarily concerned about what is displayed during playback, and
avoiding customizing my tags to the limitations in display size of the
squeeze box would be a nice improvement imo.
