Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: LiveDepartures screensaver plugin

2011-04-20 Thread mflint

Hello all,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I have ceased maintaining this
plugin, as I no longer have any need to use it.

Unfortunately this has co-incided with a major change to the Live
Departures website, which this plugin scrapes, thereby rendering the
plugin broken.

I've put the code on github [1] if anyone wishes to fork it and get it
going again. The necessary changes will be to
"UKStandardRoute.pm.doParseContent()". I also notice that the query
URLs have been changed (although the old ones still work) but it may be
worthwhile changing those too.

I did start work on a plugin for the SBC (way back when it was still
called "Jive") which could be resurrected too.

Hey,

Sorry to hear about the problems with Underground. To be honest, I
didn't think anyone was using it!

I have tonight bumped the version so it'll work with the latest version
of Squeezebox Server. Fixing the Underground thing will take a bit
longer.

(I don't use this plugin anymore, so make it available for adoption in
the near future. Anyone interested?)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] PluginBuilder - making *huge* par files for SqueezeboxServer 7.5

2010-04-19 Thread mflint

I'm trying to update my plugins for SqueezeboxServer v7.5, so installed
7.5 and grabbed PluginBuilder from the 7.5 repository.

When I run PluginBuilder, it's generating a huge par file. (800k,
compared to the 30k I was expecting)

If I change PluginBuilder to increase the verbosity of the pp task, I
see that most of SqueezeboxServer itself (plus all the out-of-the-box
plugins) are being added to the par file.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

(If I revert to using "--slimserverdir /path/to/squeezeboxserver-7.4/"
then it works OK - so I have a workaround!)

Thanks in advance,
Matthew

Apologies for the delay.

The BBC have tweaked their webpage very slightly, and it's an easy
fix.

Unfortunately, the webpage where I host the plugin is having some
issues too, so I can't upload to the usual place - meaning that the
usual "install using the repository" thing won't work.

Hope to get it fixed soon, but in the meantime I'll attach a new
version to this post.

Thanks again for notifying me of the problem :-)

I think you need to use the [Save] button which is part of the plugin's
form, not the main [Apply] button which SqueezeCenter provides. (That's
a bug in my plugin)

Also, check for saving errors, which appear inside the routes table.
You need to make sure you enter start and/or destination routes
appropriate to the route type. Example: if you choose "all departures
from", then only the "Start" station name should be entered.

Which route are you trying to enter?

Duet Remote... err, not yet. I have some thrown-together code which
does it, but it's not polished enough yet to be relied upon. I can't
see me being able to spend much time finishing this off... Thinking of
maybe releasing what I've got and hoping someone tidies things up a
bit. Any volunteers?! ;-)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: LiveDepartures screensaver plugin

2008-11-10 Thread mflint

Nice, thanks for posting the update.

Not sure what else we can do to make it fit any better. Perhaps you
could move from Peterborough to Ely? ;)

Seriously though: currently, for the Boom, it's hard-coded for three
lines - which is probably the only sensible arrangement for that
machine. But for other VFD devices (SB2/SB3/TP) there are still
improvements that can be made.

SBG/SB2/SB3
Are people generally happy with the two-line solution? Or do you
sometimes wish that either:

- you could display three lines to stop stuff scrolling, or
- you could have it set to ENORMOUS MODE, thereby easily read from
  across the room

TP
For the Transporter, I could do better there too. Any suggestions? An
easy change would be to move the time into the second display
permanently, perhaps duplicating the standard "DateTime" arrangement
there.

(I only own one SB2, one SB3 and a Duet, so don't have strong opinions
about how this plugin could be useful for Boom or TP)

I'd be interested to hear any ideas :)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: LiveDepartures screensaver plugin

2008-05-06 Thread mflint

OK, I've had a chance to investigate - and I can't get it to fail.

Here's what I did (on a pristine Ubuntu machine):

- downloaded SqueezeCenter 7.0 (from the 'SlimDevices download page'
  (http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html), the .tar.gz version)
- downloaded version 2.2.193 of LiveDepartures (from
  [url=http://wiki.insignificant.org/index.php?title=LiveDepartures]my
  Wiki)
- uncompressed the tarball to a folder in my home directory
- 'cd squeezecenter-7.0-17793/Plugins'
- unzipped the LiveDepartures zip file
- 'cd ..'
- ./slimserver.pl
- browse to 'http://localhost:9000'
- followed the setup wizard
- click 'Settings', 'Plugins', 'Live Departures Settings'
- entered two stations, selected some underground stations, pressed
  'Save'
- launched SoftSqueeze to check the screensaver works

If I shift-click on the 'Live Departures Settings' link (so the plugin
settings appear in new window), the URL is shown as:

http://localhost:9000/settings/plugins/LiveDepartures/settings/basic.html?player=...

Which is exactly the URL that is causing you trouble.

Curious... I think I need to think a little more! :-(

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Always on clock screensaver?

2008-02-07 Thread mflint

Someone - might have been Michael Herger - did write a 'ServerSwitcher'
plugin, so it is possible to programatically switch a client from one
server to another.

The trick is in doing it at the right time, just before the server goes
to sleep. Once it's asleep, you're stuck.

Erk... that doesn't look great.

The only thing that comes immediately to mind: the settings page
doesn't yet work well with the "Apply" button which comes for free with
SqueezeCenter in the bottom-right corner. Instead, you should use the
"Save" button inside the settings pane itself.

If that's not it, then I'll need to quiz you further!

It took a while, but it's done now!

There's a new version (2.2.193) on the website. Note that this requires
SqueezeCenter 7.

http://insignificant.org/wiki/index.php/LiveDepartures

Two significant new features:
* London Underground
* extra detail for journeys (where available). This will give extra
detail for Underground lines when the service isn't good, and departure
platforms for stations such as Birmingham.

Yep, 'tis a shame, as I can't imagine it's the kind of data that lends
itself to being maintained in a co-ordinated manner, or indeed in a
small number of definitive places

iConcertCal uses NME for its UK listings, and their website imples that
they have a feed from NME. I've emailed NME about this potential feed
and await their response. Otherwise it'll be (yet another)
screen-scraping exercise!

Yep, I had similar thoughts about the Biography plugin too.

To summarise my thoughts:
- certainly would want to display a calendar in the SlimCenter web
interface and/or on the Jive remote
- make the calendar available to other applications via '_iCal_'
- possibly show a screensaver with up-coming gigs based on your
location
- possibly enable some context-aware feature, based on the current
artist

I did a bit of hacking last night, in a kind of "proof-of-concept"
way.

2007-11-12 Thread mflint

Probably wouldn't be able to use iConcertCal directly, but it's
certainly possible to do something similar, by reading the same feeds
or screenscraping the same webpages.

(_'example_webpage'
- NME has no RSS feed for gigs, as far as I can tell)

How would you see it working? As an alert on the screen when you play a
particular artist, as a screensaver which interrupts the normal
screensavers, or something else?

(Mmm, interesting!)

You should be able to ssh into the machine with something like this:
Code:

ssh @

Trying from a machine outside your network would be best, but as a
first test you can test from the machine itself:
Code:

ssh @127.0.0.1

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Softsqueeze & SSH - idiot guide please

2007-10-18 Thread mflint

First, you'll need to check that the SSH port (22) isn't barred too.

You'll need to have a machine in your home network running
sshd/openssh/dropbear. Then, you'll need to make sure that incoming
connections from the internet are routed to that machine. (If you have
a NAT router, it'll be called something like 'port forwarding' or
'default server')

On your work machine, you'll need a SSH client (like PuTTY). In the
PuTTY config, there is a 'Tunnels' section. Tunnel source port 3483 to
destination "123.456.789.012:3483 Local", where 123.456.789.012 is the
IP address of your slimserver machine in your home network.

Then login to the home machine using PuTTY - this will open the tunnel
at the same time. Then connect SoftSqueeze to 127.0.0.1 or
'localhost'.

If port 22 is blocked by your firewall (as mine is) then you might like
to try adding an HTTP Tunnel into the mix. So the music is tunnelled
through SSH, and SSH is tunnelled through HTTP on port 80 or 8080.

Hope that helps :-)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] [Announce] "ArtistPlaylist" - Dynamic playlists by artist

2007-08-24 Thread mflint

Hey all,

-*Note* this is fresh fresh fresh code, and not tested very much.
Feedback welcome...-

INTRO
This plugin, which uses Erland's _'Dynamic_Playlist_Plugin'
maintains dynamic playlists based on artist selection.

For more details and for the download, here's the link:
_http://insignificant.org/wiki/index.php/ArtistPlaylist_

BUGS
Beware! Artists are stored in the settings by their IDs, which means
that if you do a complete "clear and rescan" of your library, then the
playlists will get confused. All solution ideas welcome!

This is the first hacky release, so there will surely be other bugs.

Or, you could use this as a great opportunity to master regular

(I looked at the "Mechanize" route for my 'LiveDepartures' plugin...
Mechanize would do the job very well, but I wondered whether it's was a
'sledgehammer to crack a nut' solution, and didn't want to burden users
with having to install more stuff)

Your project sounds interesting - look forward to hearing about your

Re: adding information about The Tube:

Re: moving through departing trains on one route:

I don't think this is a five-minute job, but not too big a task. It all
depends what you want to achieve.

An alternative (possibly more flexible) would be to add two more
settings to each route:
1. omit departures/arrivals within the next n minutes
2. only show n arrivals/departures

So if you were a 15 minute walk away from the station, you could
restrict the resultset to the next 3 trains departing no earlier than
15 minutes from now.

Both of those would need some work in sorting all the departures into
time order. (They are usually, but not always)

Unfortunately they day job is getting in the way again... but patches
always welcome! ;-)

2007-06-24 Thread mflint

Hi folks,

I've done another release, which should fix the problem CeeJay was
having. Rather than using "Now Playing" button to switch routes, my
Other Half suggested using the Up and Down buttons instead. Much more
sensible...

It also now works through the "Plugins->Screensavers->LiveDepartures"
menu on the Squeezebox, so it's now not necessary to set it as a
screensaver.

Feedback still welcome, of course!

I'm disappointed you're having trouble with changing routes. I must

Raymond,

In the "Server Settings" part of the web interface, the plugin should
be listed and enabled. If it's not listed, you'll need to stop and
restart SlimServer.

If it's still not there, I'd start SlimServer from the command line,
with:

Code:

$ ./slimserver.pl --d_startup --d_plugins

... to see if there are any errors when the plugin is started.

Hey, thanks for that. By chance, I'm working on it now (for the first
time in weeks) Unfortunately, my day job has been getting in the way
for a while... :-/

The plugin uses the Live Departure Boards website (_'link'
(http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ldb/)_). For your "generic trains to
London" query, I'd like to see the URL of the results page - all I get
is an error about "London" being an ambiguous destination.

No, not just you. I tried going to the 'livedepartureboards' website

Though (strangely) my regular train has been missing from the website

mine. It's there on the WAP site (if accessed via my mobile phone, or
with the Opera browser) but not on the web.

Ah yes... for things like that, I generally choose another random
plugin to look at, to determine general customs and practices in
SlimServer plugin coding. Perhaps in that case I chose wrong!

ceejay;192189 Wrote:

Yes, I've thought about it... enough to install SS 7.0 alongside 6.5.2
on my dev box. But haven't gone any further, as I understand the 7.0
API is still fluid.

If we had a definite release schedule (or even a vague one!) for 7.0,
it'd make it easier for plugin developers to plan their migration.
Right now, it's rather a moving target - and there's little incentive
to migrate just yet while use of 7.0 isn't widespread.

Ah, that'd be CeeJayCabs I guess?! ;-)

I think we need four views:

- all departures from
- departures from to
- all arrivals at
- arrivals at from

Ain't it always the way? Glad it works for you. :)

I've been playing with the Template Toolkit (nice!), and will soon have
a version which can handle multiple routes. Here's the plan:

- enter multiple start and/or destination stations for your favourite
  routes
- on first run, client displays details for the first route
- switch from one route to the next by pressing 'favourite' (I hope
  that'll be easy to remember)
- each client to remember the last route displayed
- if only the start station is entered, it'll display all departures.
If only the destination station, it'll show all arrivals

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: LiveDepartures screensaver plugin

2007-03-30 Thread mflint

@Jens:

It's good, but does display a lot of information. I wonder if this
could be an option to turn on in the settings? (Or the simpler version
could be an option to turn on!) We'd have to put a longer delay into
the journey-switching too, as I can't read it fast enough...

I really do like the improvements you've made to the HTML parsing.
Regular expressions are good at what they do, but I can never debug
them if I've slept since writing them! ;)

@Ceejay:

Thanks for the kind words :)

With Jens' version, starting SlimServer in debug mode gave me the error
"Can't locate WWW/Mechanize.pm".

(To fix this, I installed the Ubuntu package "libwww-mechanize-perl")

I'm torn; Mechanise, at a glance, will make the thing much easier to
maintain, but do we force folks to install extra libraries? -I'd be
interested to hear people's views on this.-

Re: your enhancement request for extending the number of possible
journeys: yes, I've wondered about that. I've also wondered about
having journeys set per squeezebox too.

But how to switch between them? To use the digits would probably
conflict with the SaverSwitcher plugin. Could use up/down, I suppose,
to switch...

-(Aside: I use SaverSwitcher in its manual mode: pressing 1 displays
DateTime, 2 gives LiveDepartures, 3 gives _'GoalRush'
(http://www.insignificant.org/wiki/index.php/GoalRush)_, 4 gives
TimeSpeller. I don't want or need LiveDepartures to be running full
time)-

This might lead to a wider discussion about the direction of
ScreenSavers - whether we need to extend the Saver API somewhat, or
come up with something new for this type of application: it's clear
that people are now using their Slim devices as 'information gathering'
devices. I'm not totally convinced that the ScreenSaver route is the
best suited device for stuff like LiveDepartures...

It'll now show multiple journeys, cycling through them in turn. 10

repeat.

No config for this yet, just a proof of concept, 'cos my coding after a

That's a great plan - I like it :)

Yep, it's on the list. "The Law Of Sod" said that I needed that feature
this morning, after making the plugin public just 8 hours previously.
:)

For your info, the other functional item on the list is to make the
"destination" station optional, so it shows every arrival/departure
from the "start" station.

Hey cparker,

Thanks for the positive feedback! It makes a slightly-p*ssed bloke very
happy on a Monday evening...

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: LiveDepartures screensaver plugin

2007-03-25 Thread mflint

All,

This is a screensaver plugin to display running information for UK
trains. I use it (along with 'SaverSwitcher') to see whether my trip to
the station each morning will be a sprint or a leisurely walk.

Usage: unzip to the Plugins directory, restart SlimServer. Use the
"Server Settings / Plugins" web page to configure the start and
destination stations. These need to be the 3-letter station codes. (eg.
YRK=York, LDS=Leeds, LIV=Liverpool, SHF=Sheffield)

Comments / bugreports welcome.

Matthew

Peter... It took a week to get around to it, but I've just installed
the plugin. It work exactly as you described, and is certainly more
flexible than the idea I imagined.

Good work - I'll be keeping this one. :-)

Cheers, Matthew

A big thumbs up from me - jolly good work!

I'm especially happy because my slimserver box is rather underpowered
(it's a Kurobox) and the web interface is pretty slow.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: announcing SaverSwitcher: plugin that cycles through screensavers

2007-01-30 Thread mflint

Excellent - I was thinking of something similar myself.

My idea was to run different screensavers according to a set
timetable.

Example: I'd like my "is my train running on time" screensaver* to be
displayed between 7:30 and 8:00 each weekday morning, and 'GoalRush '
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32165) to run between
15:00 and 17:00 each Saturday.

I'll investigate yours - good work!

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: GoalRush (UK football scores screensaver)

2007-01-27 Thread mflint

In a '_thread_' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31615)
two weeks ago, 'mervyn' suggested a plugin to display UK football
scores.

I suggested that it wouldn't be too hard to parse a webpage at the BBC.
And I was right - it wasn't hard. But plumbing it into a SlimServer
screensaver... well that was more difficult!

Anyway, here it is.

It's very basic, and works only as a screensaver. The up/down buttons
scroll through all the goal-flashes (with item #1 in the list being the
most recent). Every 10 seconds the displayed line will advance (unless
the most recent item is already being displayed) and every two minutes
it'll fetch an updated list of stuff from Auntie Beeb.

I may enhance it further, but then again I may not. ;-)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Interactive screensaver?

2007-01-27 Thread mflint

Hello folks...

I'm struggling here, and would appreciate a pointer or two:

I have the basics of a screensaver written which shows one item from an
array of strings. But I'd like for the display to be like this:

> Blah (15 of 33)
> This is item fifteen

I'd like to be able to control the item being displayed
programmatically (automatic scrolling) and via the remote "UP" and
"DOWN" buttons.

Most of the problems I'm having are to do with the "lines()" function,
and the lack of documentation about the capabilities of the "client"
object.

Questions:
- can a screensaver's "functions" map respond to IR commands? I can't
get it to work using a combination of '_this_wiki_page_'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginScreenSavers) and
'_this_one_' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?PluginFunctions)
- can I somehow return "line 2 => @someArray" from my
screenSaverLines() function, and have slimserver magically handle the
display of one item from the array?
- and if so, how do I programatically change the displayed index?

Questions questions questions...! Thanks in advance!

Matthew

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Re: Guidance for new plugin developers?

2007-01-19 Thread mflint

Thanks all - most helpful.

And the "FileViewer" plugin was just what I was looking for :-)

One more question though: I seem to have trouble getting slimserver to
recognise changes to the plugin - so what do the rest of you do? Do you
all restart slimserver each time you make a change to your plugin, or am
I missing something?

The "scan for plugins on demand" setting (I forget its exact name)
doesn't seem to help, and the "plugin" debug option doesn't generate
any output in /var/log/slimserver :-(

Thanks again! Matthew

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Guidance for new plugin developers?

2007-01-16 Thread mflint

Hello all...

I've been looking at the "Developing plugins" pages in the Wiki, and
I've been struggling to get even the most basic plugin to be recognised
by SlimServer.

So I have a couple of queries:

1. Is there a lump of skeleton plugin code which can be used as the
basis for new development projects? If not, would the SlimServer crew
consider creating and maintaining a "Hello World" plugin? Such a plugin
would (I guess) be less than a couple of Kb in size, and most of that
comments

2. Are there any docs available to say which parts of SlimServer
constitute an "API", and which are internal? I didn't see much evidence
of a "best practices" document in the Wiki. I have looked at the code
for other plugins, but there's no guarantee that they're not using
nasty tricks

3. What about any formal API documentation? I'm sure there'll be tons
of routines in SlimServer that would be available for plugin devs to
use, but are not generally known about and therefore often re-invented.
How about a list of callbacks available from SlimServer to plugins?

4. I wonder which forum would be best suited for discussions about
plugin development? This one seems to be more about announcements and
discussions of released plugins... do all you developers write your
plugins in isolation?

Er, I think that's all for now! I've probably got my SlimServer / perl
terminology all wrong, but I hope you get the gist of what I'm looking
for. Thanks in advance...

Matthew :-)

Nope! But it shouldn't be too hard to parse the source code for that
webpage... ;-)

I'm tempted, but it's late and I've been ripping my CD collection into
the early hours for the past week. -*yawn*-
