Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MusicIP Integration--At A Loss

2010-03-09 Thread Phil Leigh

OK - a quick recap:
1) you have set up a music folder for SBS that contains nothing but two
shortcuts, one to "E:\" and one to "F:\".
2) a full rescan in SBS picks up ALL music from both drives
3) nothing is marked as "mixable"

The answer has to be that the paths to the music files stored in
default.m3lib do not EXACTLY match the paths to the music files stored
in the SBS scanner database.

How can this happen? - well, the most likely cause is that MIP is
looking at the wrong default.m3lib file... check you don't have more
than one of these on your PC.

Secondly, check that the file counts match in SBS and MIP. IF
everything is set up perfectly, the SONG count at the bottom left of the
Home page in the SBS web UI will match exactly with the SONG count in
the MIP Win GUI main screen, bottom right.

Finally, go to http://localhost:10002/server and click on Show
Songs...
this will take a while, but should come back with a list of all of your
tracks - showing the ACTUAL path stored in MIP...

This explains why it "hangs" my system - 14 lines of data and a blank
line for each song - 99,028 songs. It clogs up Firefox's cache.

I agree with Phil - you might be hitting a memory or cache limit
somewhere. Have you tried with only one shortcut ?

2010-03-08 Thread Ultraviolet

Wirrunna, everything behaves how you describe right up until the
http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended part. After starting the
service, it is greyed out, show services displays
http://localhost:10002/ just fine. I can click on "API" and
"Duplicates" as well. What's odd is
http://localhost:10002/api/duplicates takes about 20 minutes to return
results, but it works fine. http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended
(or http://localhost:10002/api/songs?extended) fails after 10-15 seconds
max. This makes me think it's not failing due to a large library, but
because of something else.

As far as the drive letters go: On the first pc with the scsi attached
array, the two volumes in question are locally E:\ and F:\. The second
computer I just recently tried, does not have the scsi array directly
attached to it. I mapped the two volumes as Blue (Z) and Blue 2 (X). I
also tried using the UNC path as well--I got the same result in both
places.

What is the purpose of http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended??
What is that supposed to return? How is it possible that MiP
integration works great on a single 2tb volume, but this link never
works for me?

I'm fairly convinced at this point that I have to be the root cause off
this issue. I've tried two different computers with two different
versions of MiP (both GUI and headless) and several different versions
of SBS with both local, mapped and UNC paths. I'm getting the exact
same result each time: Everything works great with any configuration as
long as SBS does not have to use shortcuts for it's music library.

Ultraviolet, I've been waiting for Phil to answer this, he knows a lot
mote about this than I do, but while we're waiting let me make a few
comments.

1. In the MIP GUI, click on File, Preferences, Services. It is in this
box that you can configure the port used (provided no services are
running).
If the service is running, the box should show Services Port with 1002
grayed out, it should also show under Enabled Services a tick against
API. The tick and API should also be grayed out.
Clicking on the Show Services button should bring up your web browser
with the address http://localhost:10002/ and the title MusicMagic
Services API and display "Active services:* API"

2. If you can get the Active Services display in your browser, then
http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended should display. I did find
while trying this that after going back and forth MIP appeared to hang
and I had to stop and start the MIP GUI to get the displays to work.

I don't know how a "SCSI attached array" appears in Windows Explorer,
however you appear to have changed the location of your music from the
earlier post.
Your description of creating the shortcut in C:\SBS Library is exactly
how I did it, but I don't understand why you cannot browse to the music
from the 'create shortcut' dialog. If you double click on your shortcuts
in C:\SBS Library does it take you to the music folder ?

Guys it's definitely possible to get this working and MiP is not buggy
as far as this discussion is concerned - I have found it rock solid.
Likewise MiP integration into SBS is rock solid for me, using an XP
shortcut to a drive or the drive directly as a music folder.

One thing - I do NOT have ANY watch folders setup in the MiP win GUI. I
always add music manually to MiP.

You should try this.

Also, I use 7.4.2 (and now 7.5 embedded) - if you are on XP I urge you
to move to 7.4.2.

I have attached a zip file of the shortcuts that SBS uses in my

2010-02-24 Thread Ultraviolet

Thanks Wirrunna,

I actually was running the MiP GUI for years, until I was forced to use
SBS shortcuts and ran into this issue. I switched to MiP headless to
see if that would solve anything. It didn't obviously. I'm either
missing something really obvious, or something is seriously messed up
with my system. I've done complete uninstalls and reinstalls of both
MiP and SBS, many many rescans etc. Currently I just have a portion of
my music in SBS and MiP is working nicely (as long as I don't use
shortcuts). I just don't have my whole library in there.

It's not the end of the world, I was just frustrated that it didn't
work. I find myself using SBS (and my Duet) less and less as SBS
stability heads downhill. MiP, and serving music at work, was really
the only reason I use SBS anymore. While I think it's absurd that SBS
doesn't have the capability to add multiple paths to a library (I
believe it's the first piece of software I've found with this
limitation), I'm not quite ready to blame the issues I'm experiencing on
SBS. I love what MiP does, but it is perhaps the buggiest piece of
software I've ever used. I'm also not confident that I'm doing
everything properly as many people seem to have this set up working just
fine...

Ultraviolet, I run a similar setup to yours but with MIP running as a
gui (XP SP3).
Music in F:\SqueezeCentre Music, which has two shortcuts - Music from F
and Music from G - the shortcuts point at F:\Music and G:\Music2. Within
these two directories are a bunch of other directories - F:\Music\FLAC -
new, F:\Music\FLAC from Broulee, etc - and within these directories the
usual Artist, Album, Track structure.
Have you tried running MIP as a GUI rather than headless?

I have never bothered to run MIP headless for two main reasons, the
first being that I make mixes in MIP, save them and then run an "only
scan playlists" in SB server, and secondly it just seemed a bit
complicated.

Well, I give up. MiP mix information works great on 2tb of music--as
long as SBS is pointed directly at the volume. Shortcuts don't work at
all--UNC vs mapped drive doesn't matter and the amount of music doesn't
matter.

Even with MiP working I can not reach
http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songsextended. It's not a timeout issue
either because I tried this with a single album in the m3lib cache and a
single album in SBS. I'm out of ideas.

Is the ability to add multiple paths to the SBS music library source on
the roadmap anywhere?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MusicIP Integration--At A Loss

2010-02-17 Thread Ultraviolet

Sorry Phil, I was gone for the weekend, but I really appreciate all of
your help so far. To answer your questions:

http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs? gives me a page cannot be displayed
screen after perhaps 10-15 seconds. So that definitely seems to be a
problem, if not the problem.

My Music is on E:\ and F:\. These are two, 2TB volumes on a SCSI
attached array on the same machine running SBS. My SBS (containing two
shortcuts to E:\ and F:\) music folder is C:\MusicLibrary.

"I think your problem is related to step 1. If you are only reading
"mixable status" from MiP, this is an incremental process (as I
understand it) so the error message you are getting is preventing any
new tracks (in MiP) being set as mixable in SBS - however, anything
mixable from prior scans stays as mixable. This could lead to you seeing
rather confusing results. The whole shortcuts thing could be a red
herring."

I don't really understand what you're aying here. I don't have any
songs mixable at all at this point and it all crapped out when I
switched to using shortcuts. One important point that keeps me from
thinking that the shortcut thing is a red herring is that I can get a
2TB volume SBS with MiP information just fine. The only change I make
is to point the SBS library directly at the file location instead of a
shortcut.

"I'd concentrate on http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended - if this
doesn't work when pasted into a browser it won't work in the scanner and
you won't be able to add the mixable status of any new tracks at all -
even from your existing disk with no shortcuts"

I'm not sure about this. I'm trying a scan again with SBS pointed to
the actual volume location. I'll try
http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended and let you know if it works
that way.

I am running a headless server (setup via instructions on Spicefly) and
do have an active the MusicMagicServer process running. Additionally
http://127.0.0.1:10002 works just fine and I can see all tracks here.

The Windows GUI isn't running, all services are unchecked and I've set
the port to 10003 in the off chance they come to life on their own.

"...and you are reloading the cache into the headless server (or
stopping and restarting the service) after you make any changes to the
content of default.m3lib?"

Sorry, I don't quite follow this. The cache is loaded into the
headless server. I have done some new analysis on both the GUI and
http://127.0.0.1:10002 over the last several months, but the caches seem
to match and I've restarted this machine so many times trouble-shooting
this, that the service has been stopped and restarted many times.

I'm using XP SP3, MiP 1.9 (but this issue persists with 1.8 as well),
SBS is 7.4.1 r28947 and the browser is IE 7.

Just to clarify, the above setup works perfectly when the SBS library
is pointed directly to a folder or drive. With the exact same set up,
with SBS pointed to a folder of shortcuts, it doesn't work at all. That
really seems like a single variable issue, but I am totally at a loss of
how to resolve it. You're right, not being able to access
http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended seems to be the issue, but
how do I go about troubleshooting this?

Thanks again for all the help.

Final thoughts:
You are running the headless server?

You do have an active Windows Process in Task Manager called
"MusicMagicServer"?

In the Windows GUI, under preferences - services you do have NOTHING
ticked and the port set to 10003 (NOT 10002) don't you?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MusicIP Integration--At A Loss

2010-02-12 Thread Phil Leigh

Some more information for you:
1) http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended should work when pasted
into your browser and should EVENTUALLY return a web page full of all of
your songs... it takes about 5 minutes on my PC with 30k tracks... yours
will take longer! A lot longer...

2) My music is all on a disk d:\ which is an external USB drive. My
music folder is set to d:\ and MiP thinks all my files are
d:\whatever...
I created a new folder on C: and put a normal Windows shortcut to d:\
in there, changed Music Folder to C:\new folder, recsanned and it worked
fine.

I think your problem is related to step 1.
The whole shortcuts thing could be a red
herring.

I'd concentrate on http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songs?extended - if this
doesn't work when pasted into a browser it won't work in the scanner and
you won't be able to add the mixable status of any new tracks at all -
even from your existing disk with no shortcuts!

Can you confirm versions of OS, MiP, SBS and browser?

I just get page cannot be displayed with the ?extended. The only part
of that url that works for me is http://localhost:10002/. The thing is,
it works perfectly fine as long as the SBS library doesn't consist of
shortcuts. Basically, with the current MiP m3lib, I can point SBS to a
2tb partition full of music and everything works great. If I want to
include more music, and point it to a folder containing only shortcuts,
it doesn't work at all. This leads me to believe that it has to be a
path issue, but I have recreated my default.m3lib with all UNC paths and
my SBS music library folder contains UNC shortcuts. I thought this
would fix the path issue (if it's a path issue), but no go.

Is there anyway to put more than one path in to SBS for a library
(there really should be)?

In any case, what's really frustrating is that I know people, like
Phil, have gotten the above setup working before.

This command should dump a _full_ list of _all_ tracks known to MusicIP. That's
quicker than querying every single track if you want to import all data. Did
you set MusicIP scan options to import all data? You might give the "check
mixable status" or similar only.

Ok, I'm using UNC paths for both MiP and SBS. My entire library is in
MiP, but I only placed one small UNC folder in SBS so I could do a quick
test--good thing too as it didn't work. Below is a snippet of the log
with MiP debug on and the only part that contained an error.

Why is it looking for "http://localhost:10002/api/songs?extended";?

http://localhost:10002/ works just fine. I'm not sure what the rest of
that path is though--it doesn't work in a browser.

Any ideas?

OK I'll try (but remember my experience of NAS running apps is zippo!)
1) The results of the music analysis are written to a file called
default.m3lib - this is the MusicIP databae on your machine. They are
also (optionally) written as tags (just like the album title, track
title etc)inside your music files themselves - but ONLY if you enable
the MIP setting called "Auto-archive tags" or something like that. You
can write them manually in the Windows MIP GUI by selecting files and
right-click - Archive Analysis...

Archiving the analysis to the files themselves is vital if you want to
move files around on your disks...otw mip will rebuild its database and
re-analyse the music!

2) If you have the MusicIP plugin installed in SBS, when a scan runs it
will talk to the mip server process and for each track it will receive a
marker from mip that says "I've anlaysed this and know how to do a mix
from it".
This will put a little "M" (mixable) icon on the various lists of
tracks, albums etc you see in the sbs web ui or on the SB devices

3) If you click the "M" icon SBS and the MIP server will talk to each
other and the MIP server will return to SBS a playlist based on your
starting track

Understand about analyse music, but where are the results kept and
how/what store additional tags? If so, do we then point squeezebox

I can't help with the nas side of things. I could totally take you
through it on a PC.

In very brief summary this is what you do (there are some alternatives
for step 1):
1) use the MusicIP windows GUI to analyse your music and store the
results as additional tags within your music files. This also creates a
MIP database called default.m3lib. After that you don't need the GUI
until you add new music.
2)Install the headless server version of MIP on your NAS and point it
at the default.m3lib from step 1
3) do a full rescan in SBS with the MusicIP plugin activated

I'm not sure - have you tried setting the shortcut paths as UNC's?
I'm sure this used to work for me fine when I had 3 drives and a
shortcuts folder...

If the above doesn't work, I'd use the MIP GUI to refresh/rebuild the
library so it definitely points to your new drives. If you've archived
the analysis to the file tags it shoudln't need to reanalyse
anyhting...?

AH - I think it is the way the shortcuts are used... the paths in the
SBS database have to match EXACTLY the paths held within the
default.m3lib file and I think you have to create the shortcuts in a

I'm a bit confused. MusicIP HEADLESS server doesn't point directly at
your music drives - it reads the m3lib cache file which is pointed at by
the mmm.ini file which SHOULD say:

cache=C:\Documents and Settings\{your user name here!}\Application
Data\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer\default.m3lib

[SlimDevices: Plugins] MusicIP Integration--At A Loss

2010-02-10 Thread Ultraviolet

So I've been using MusicIP and SBS for years and years and, while it has
been glitchy, I've made it work. That is, until my music outgrew it's
2TB volume. I know that other people here have a similar set up
working, but I am clearly missing something. Here's my setup:

Music (FLAC & MP3) on two separate 2 TB partitions (E: and F:). Music
IP is pointed to these paths directly and all tracks are analyzed (and
mixes can be made directly with MiP). A folder (C:\MusicLibrary)
contains shortcuts to E: and F: and SBS is pointed here. All tracks are
found in SBS, but none of them have the "M" for MiP mixes. My MiP setup
is headless, the service is running and http://localhost:10002 works
just fine. If I point SBS to directly to either E: or F: (meaning I get
half of my music library) the "M" is in SBS and everything is good. The
only time I can't get it working at all, is when I have to point SBS to
a folder of shortcuts. I know other people have made this work. I have
tried probably 30 complete scans trying various things over months and
am about to give up completely. I have debug turned on for the MiP log
and I can't find any problems with it (portion of log attached).

Does anyone have any ideas? For me MiP functionality is the sole
reason for using SBS.

Thanks for the help.
