What's the status regarding Muso and Linux or OSX support ? Is there any
way to get it to work reliably on Linux or OSX ?

Muso looks really great, but the thing that always stops me is that
I've bad experience with other applications when trying to use Wine and
Mono, which both often have various issues. Does Muso work reliable with
Wine or Mono ?

To be honest, I've not tried it. I don't imagine it will work as is,
but maybe with a bit of code tweaking it could be made to. I will try
this some time, promise.

I managed to install OSX in a VM in VirtualBox, but it crashes before I
can do anything useful. Looks like I may have to invest in a Mac.

That's odd since both functions rely on the CLI rather than db access -
I will check it out. In the mean time, please send me a log file if you

It seems to be working fine for me against SMS 7.6.1. I'll upgrade to
the latest to see if that affects it, but what version of SB are you

Well, such things are normally left to the player itself, it's just a
click on the remote for Squeezebox devices, and similar for iTunes and
Winamp players. It's do-able though, since I think all the player APIs
support toggling shuffle mode. I'll evaluate the best place for it -
right-click context menu only probably.

Yes, I know but I tend to forget to switch off the shuffle mode
afterwards and end up playing all albums shuffled for a while. Plus I
would have to use something other than muso to get the desired mode of
play.

Thanks for considering this.

So it's just the one album you'd want shuffled, rather than turning on
shuffle mode. That makes it a muso function, it can randomise the
tracks itself. I'll look into it.

NB. You can already queue up random tracks by genre - select a genre
from the filter quick-pick list, then hit the magic wand (queues up 10
random tracks each click, it ensures there are no duplicates even if
you click 10 times).

Thanks for asking!

A simple request would be to show the origin of the lyrics displayed
for the Now Playing track. In iPeng I can see if there are no lyrics
embedded in the music file but iPeng found lyrics on the internet, and
then I can try to find the lyrics and embed them (since that is the way
I like to have it).

A more complicated request would be to have muso automatically detect
changes to the SBS database and doing a resync.

More links to the artist, album and track (Wikipedia, AMG, MusicBrainz
and Discogs) could also be useful (maybe even a browser window/tab
within muso).

And - although muso is excellent as a SBS front end on a Windows PC
already as is - I have many more ideas so just keep asking if you have
too much spare time. :) (How about an Artists "cover wall", like with
Albums but with artist images from LastFM? That non SBS related idea I
got from from JRiver Media Center.)

I like the artist cover wall idea. The main content area in muso is web
based, I'm just getting into the jquery javascript library - there are
many jquery plugins I could use (example:
http://www.professorcloud.com/mainsite/carousel.htm) to make new
displays in muso.

Thanks for listening! The display view in the referenced link - or some
other solution - could be useful in a full screen display where
different images (back, inside, inlay, booklet, cd/lp/single) for one
album are displayed really large and can be altered/moved by the arrow
keys.

I forgot to request the ability to display embedded cover art for the
Now Playing song. (For compilation or VA albums I embed different
singles cover art for each track, and I have a folder.jpg in the album
folder to represent the compilation/VA album as an entity.) SBS and
iPeng can display individual cover art for the currently playing song.

When I load your software, these fields are not filled in. (I'm

that info is ONLY good for Muso) Please clarify. Thanks.

It's the best looking thing I've seen yet, but it MUST support

Where do you get the information for:

I'm assuming you are scanning the files themselves via a folder scan
rather than synchronisng with Squeezebox Server, correct? If so I'll

I've worked out how to read the COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR and ORCHESTRA tags,
but I don't see PERFORMER in these examples, and don't see that in
mp3tag's list of extended tags, so that doesn't seem a standard tag id.
Do you encode the performer separately from ORCHESTRA for a soloist? If
so what do you use? The standard ARTIST tag perhaps?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-09 Thread ralphpnj

Okay so I downloaded and installed muso version 1.4.10 on my windows 7
computer. Everything appears to working as advertised except for one
slight issue:

On the muso web page it says:

"Ability to browse and read liner notes within the browser (requires
images to be placed in album folders)."

Once again muso appears to have scanned my music library for these
images which are stored in the album folders and are for the most part
*.jpg files, with the odd pdf file here and there. Muso is displaying
the cover art just fine but for the life of me I cannot figure out how
to view the other artwork files, such as "back.jpg" or "booklet.jpg"

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Hmm, it should just find them. On the album page below the cover you
should see a link like "4 Images", and one for each pdf file. Clicking
on the Images link should take you to a special page for browsing the
images. Clicking on the pdf links should open them in Windows.

First thank you for your quick response. Now onto the business at
hand.

Okay below is a screenshot of an album page from the muso running on my
computer. I don't see any link for images. Along with the six flac song
files the following files are in the album folder:

review.txt
Cover.jpg
Booklet 02.jpg
Booklet 01.jpg
back.jpg

Please note that muso did a complete scan of the images in my music
library which took well over three hours to complete and completed
without any errors.

On a separate issue: is there any way to search for a specific artist
or album using muso?

I consider the ability to display images and the ability to search to
be necessary features.

Are your album files on a network drive and is access to that drive
quite slow? 3 hours is quite a long time to scan for files, even if
there are over a quarter of a million of them.

Is the scan you initiate from muso a scan of folders, or a synch with
Squeezebox Server? The latter is probably faster. When muso scans
folders, it is only looking for song files, not images, it only looks
for additional images only when you view the album or now playing page.
Are you sure that muso can access the song folder at this point? Do you
arrange this via a drive mapping?

A view of the Options/Music Sources/Squeezebox Server page would be
useful, plus a view of how the track paths are stored in muso (from
your album view click on Edit Tracks, and ensure the File Path is
displayed and visible when you take the screenshot). We'll get this
worked out.

Have you tried with another album? If your hard drive takes a while to
spin up, then you will not get images for the first album you access
and that result is cached so that album will not show images during
that session. But if you choose a second album when the hard drive is
up and running you should hopefully see the images. I had the same
issue and it took some investigation to find out what was going on.

That's a good point. There is quite a short timeout when it looks for
images so that it doesn't wait around too long, and it does cache the
result of the search for the session - but I might fine tune this by
making it look again if last time it has timed out.

Or perhaps with just a link to the image page that says "No local

By the way, I see you have a review.txt file in the folder too. Muso
won't currently pick .txt files up, but I could perhaps make it do so
(show a link saying "review" on the artwork page and when clicked
inject the textual content into the display). Any other supporters for
this mod? Would the .txt extension need to be configurable?

Thanks, so from the machine and user running muso you can browse (in
windows explorer, say) to :

\\JAZZFAN-PC\F\ClassicalF-M\Liszt - The Complete Annees de Pelerinage -
Louis Lortie (2010)(24bit-96kHz)

and open/view images in that folder without any issue? Or does it
require extra folder permissions or UAC elevation?

I cannot browse or view the files in the music folders on the machine
running Squeezebox Server from the machine running muso. I believe that
I would have to reset the folder/drive permissions, which I just did.
Let's see how that works out.

Yep you need to arrange direct access, I don't think Squeezebox Server
can be coerced to serve a client with these extra media files.

Okay so I managed to get the windows shares/permissions/etc thing
figured out and now I do see and have access to the images and pdf
files stored in a given album's folder, which is great!

New problem/issue/question: a lot of my cover art is not showing up in
muso. By this I mean the cover art for albums which already have cover
art, cover art which is recognized by SBS but not showing up in muso.
How do I fix this?

Glad it's working.

Muso's artwork is independent to SBS. It gets it from:
(a) image files in the song folder (filespec configurable),
(b) song file tags
(c) last.fm API web search (if web resources search configured)
(d) Amazon API web search (if web resources search configured)
It doesn't look in SBS's artwork repository, it's not exposed in a
usable way.

For any albums it has not found artwork automatically you can take
control of it manually, drag an image from a web browser or your
filesystem to the album page (or the album blank cd display in the
albums page). The "google image search" link is provided on the album
page as a help for this process.

You did try the Tools => Find Missing Artwork option after fixing the
file permission thing? For me, muso finds all cover art that SBS/LMS
finds (and back, booklet etc covers as well).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-16 Thread ralphpnj

I've been using my licensed copies of muso for a couple of weeks now and
I had not run into any performance issues until today. Today I had to
replace my router and during the process the router changed my
Squeezebox Server IP address from 192.168.1.107 to 192.168.1.3 When I
tried to change this setting in muso (tools->options->music
sources->SBS->SBS configuration->host) muso was very, very slow in
responding. Once I did manage to made the change muso returned to its
normal speed and now everything is working just fine. Not a major bug
but annoying nonetheless.

My feature request is twofold:

1) Is there any way you might be able to add support for
reading/viewing any simple text files that are stored in the album
folder? I often have text files containing information about the
recording especially when the recording is not from a commercial CD,
such as live recordings. The ability to read these info files would be
greatly appreciated.

2) Is there any way you might be able to add support for viewing image
and pdf files which are stored in a sub-folder of the album folder? I
often have a sub-folder labeled "scans" or "art" or "artwork"
containing additional image files, especially when there are many
images, such as when I scan an entire booklet from a multi-disc set.

I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Regarding the slow response on changing the server IP, I'll look into
it.

Regarding your change requests:
1) Yes I think this is doable, I'll look into the possibility for a
near-future enhancement.
2) It already does this but only looks in subfolders named "scans",
"covers", "art", or "booklet" - I will either look to make this
configurable, or open it up to any sub-folder.

This is a curious one, the sqlite dll should be named
System.Data.SQLite.dll - mind you Windows Server 2008 is not one of the
officially supported platforms.

You could try renaming this file to the one expected in C:\Program
Files\klarita.net\muso

or try following the advice for the similar issue here:

I'm seeing exactly the same thing on Windows 7 x64

May be a 64 bit issue then - yet I have had x64 users before without any
problem. Try downloading this zip file:

and extract the SQLite.Interop.DLL from there and placing it in

Yes, that seems to work OK now.

OK thanks for letting me know, I can modify the installation to put
this file there automatically for 64 bit environments, but it's good to
know that's a workaround in the interim.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-24 Thread sachadog

Hi,
I thought I would post this one on the forum to see if others have had
the same problem.
When I started ripping music I used Windows Media Player to rip to
MP3.
When completed the tags "looked ok" and complete. However, since I have
put my music library onto a Windows Home Server Version 1, I have
noticed that the tags are not correct.
I use the W.H.S for my library together with Muso as a front end, so
anyone on my home network can use it. Muso found an anomoly that I
hadn't seen before; when using just the players (3 x Classic, 1 x Duet,
1 x Touch). There appears to be a 30 character limit on my early tags.
Now whether this is a common feature I don't know, but if accessing the
music files on the server, the title/artist etc all appear complete,
but on playing the files, Muso and the players only see the first 30
characters/spaces on those tags.
I have now started to re-rip those early tracks. I have used
dbpoweramp for a few years now and there does not appear to be the
character limit on those tracks I ripped to MP3 and latterly Flac.
The reason I hadn't noticed before, was because the music played
correctly and I didn't regularly look at the player in use. Having
Muso full screen, made the recurring errors easy to see and going back
through my library has shown that early Media Player tracks had this
limitation.
I suspect I am not the only person who has suffered this problem.
I hope this is of help to other users. To rectify the problem,
requires a re-rip. I did try to amend the tags, but it didn't work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-24 Thread vagskal

This is almost certainly not a muso issue.

That said, my guess is that you have in your music files both ID3v2
tags and ID3v1 tags. The latter have a limit on the length of the tag
which the former do not have. To test/rectify use MP3Tag:
1. In MP3Tag settings (Mpeg) set MP3Tag to read/show all tag variants
and to write ONLY ID3v2 tags and delete all tag types BUT ID3v2. Set
MP3Tag to show a Tag column (I think it is there by default; the tag
value should be "%_tag_read%[ (%_tag%)]").
2. Add some mp3 files to MP3Tag (work on a copy of the files first just
to see if it works) and see what the Tag column shows (probably both
ID3v2.3 and ID3v1).
3. Select all files and first save all tags and the delete all tags.
Now your music files should only contain the longer ID3v2 tags and the
abbreviated version from the ID3v1 tags should never show up after a
rescan in LMS and muso.

Re-ripping with dBpoweramp to flac is always a good idea.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-01-24 Thread sachadog

Hi,
I realise this is not a Muso problem. In fact it was Muso that
highlighted the problem for me.
I have tried various ways to overcome this problem, but none seemed to
work. I have therefore been undertaking re-rips of my earlier tracks,
changing MP3s to Flac. I don't now use Media Player, for ripping
tracks.

I had been in personal contact with Jeremy (Muso) and the best solution
we came up with was a re-rip. It's not a problem I had encountered
until I started using Muso's functionality. I was more than happy, that
the music was coming from my Squeezeboxes. It was only when it stared
me in the face, with Muso's front-end capability, that I noticed this
was what was happening.
If this acts as a warning to other users then that's a bonus.
I am nearly through re-ripping the affected tracks and tags, so my
problem is almost solved.
If anything this is praise for Muso. I hope more S.B.S. users give it
a try.

Yes, having your music in flac is a good thing, and you get secure rips
and good meta data from AMG with dBpoweramp. Although re-ripping can be
a bit boring. I know since I have done it myself.

(When ripping with dBpoweramp to flac you do not get ID3 tags that can
have length limitations but Vorbis comments without such limitations
that LMS/muso can read.)

Hi Vagskal,
I have learned the hard way! When I started the library, some
considerable time ago, I hadn't heard of dbpoweramp. Neither did I
know much about MP3's or Flac. I knew about iPods etc, but the sound
they produce wasn't to my liking! It sounded so compressed.
I re-ripped my early library rips as they sounded flat in the standard
rip setting of Media Player. I then went to the maximum setting in MP3
on Media Player and that sounded better, however, I also got error
filled rips that weren't highlighted, by the program.
Learning from my mistakes, I discovered dbpoweramp a few years ago and
I am now ripping everything in Flac. I personally won't go back to
Media Player for rips again.

Muso is a very good program, and it gives a professional looking
front-end to the equally good L.M.S. and because it's "in your face" it
showed up the errors in my library. Still it keeps me off the streets!

1. Muso is not showing artwork in the Albums view (the view with all
albums showing thumbnails) for an album named †, where the latter part
of the path to the album folder is "Justice\† (2007)". A small red X is
shown instead of the artwork. In the Album page (showing just that
album) the artwork is shown.

2. I cannot get muso to show artwork for my one album by the
artist/album artist Goran Kajfeš. In the Album view a generic CD image
is shown and on the Album page for that album no artwork at all is
shown.

In both cases the artwork show up fine in LMS/iPeng. I have tried to
clear artwork for those albums and then Find missing artwork. (The
Goran Kajfeš album artwork did not even show up after I wiped the
entire muso database and resynced with LMS; I have not tried that with
the Justice album I just added.)

Could it have something to do with the funny characters?

It's almost definitely the funny characters yes. For caching the cover
artwork muso normalises the artist and album name (so š should be
normalised to s) so I'm not sure why this album is having a problem. An
album called † probably cannot be normalised at all, so it might be that
the browser has an issue with the name. I'll look into both by
replicating the names.

I've had a few problems showing artwork OS is Windows 7.

No embedded artwork shows when mp3 file tags are 3v2.4 (convert to
3v2.3 and artwork shows OK)

An album with only 3 tracks in it had me tearing my hair out last
night, I finally discovered the cause - Tools > Options > Album
Collation > Minimum Number Of Tracks was set to four, I changed this to
1, and the album showed up.

Both albums are MP3 with ID3v2.3 tags and embedded artwork as well as a
folder.jpg in the album folder. The path for the other album ends with
"Goran Kajfeš\Headspin (2004)".

The name of the Justice artwork in the muso covers cache is just "

the other album (named Headspin).

This is to prevent album view being swamped by non-albums or partial
albums. It will also recognise it as a full album if your tracks have
the "Track Count" attribute set to 3, or the total duration is more
than the configured threshold.

It seems to be the leading space that causes the issue for the Justice
album, only there because it can't translate the album name to any
usable characters. This leading space is suppressed in 1.4.11 to be
released today. I cannot find any issue with the Goran Kajfeš album
unfortunately - for me this works as is. Did you try dragging an image
to the album manually?

The first issue I have replicated and a resolution is targeted for the

The standard Vorbis comment in flac files for label is called
ORGANIZATION. The standard ID3v2.3 mp3 tag for this is called TPUB.

Are you considering having muso scan files in the LMS database for
additional file tags? That would be a great enhancement.

Very nice work you've been doing. I still have 6 days left on my demo,
then I think I'll have to buy and support your efforts.

I have a couple of things:

1) can you show "publisher" via FLAC? (for my classical collection,
this is very key and often referred to when discussing a CD.
2) I know it's not a player, but could you at least support foobar2000?
it is not FAT like winamp and most hard core FLAC guys use it.
3) damn it, I have Sonos. I love how you work with squeezebox, but is
there a chance to support it? I had the original squeezebox, prior to
logitect. I may go back to it for the 24-96 quality.

Thanks!

Yes, publisher is label, like you said Naxos, EMI, Sony, DG.

Thanks.I have no preference in location, but it will be nice to have it
as a grouping item, like you do at the top where I can click on Artist,
conductor and orchestra (band) now.

One other thing is I have soloist as a tag in hundreds of flac CDs.
Could this be mapped to your performer? and would also be good on the
top as a clickable, such as Yo-Yo Ma.

If you need one of my files again to look over, let me know.

Thanks.

Yes I'd map this to performer - send me a file with this encoded as
soloist (and one with publisher) and I'll see if they can be extracted.

It's old, but sounds like it's still true...

begin quote:
-
When tagging "PUBLISHER" for FLAC files, mp3tag somehow turn it into
the "Organization" field instead.

For example, when I tag 'EMI' as Publisher into a FLAC file, it would
not show up in Winamp's File Info -> Basic Info -> Publisher field;
when I click on the Advanced tab, it'd list 'EMI' as under the
"Organization" field, which is useless as no one would read that.

-
end of quote

You're right internally it's stored as attribute ORGANIZATION even if
you call it PUBLISHER in mp3tag. Do you have a good reference for
standard Vorbis comment tag IDs? Yes I'd like to extend it to read as
many standard tags as I can, maybe even some additional ad-hoc tags by
configuration. I'll need a new attribute for
ORGANIZATION/PUBLISHER/LABEL/call-it-what-you-will plus any more
standard tags I need to support, plus browse-by options for each such
new attribute.

The original Squeezebox and all other later Squeezebox models except
for the Transporter and the Touch do NOT support 96kHz but they do
support up to 24bit/48kHz. For 24/96 support I suggest you get a Touch,
which can be found for under $250 in the US. It will be one of your best

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-02-02 Thread camelx

I just tagged about 400 of my 1400 classical CDs with MP3Tag all FLACs.

I used beyond normal tags these fields based on things I read and other
music management software:

soloists - ie, like Yo-Yo Ma, or a concerto with featured guest
Publisher - for label, like EMI, Naxos, Sony, etc
Orchestra - for orchestra, others use BAND

I also move composer to Artist and Album Artist.

--

Now hearing about Mp3Tag actually putting Publisher in Organization,
I'm confused. I will completely stop my project until I can get the
right info so I can do this right.

I don't even see an Option for Organization in Mp3Tag for it's extended
tag support. Is Soloist a good thing to use? or should I be making
Performers like Muso has?

Orchestra or Band?

Geezzz!
Thanks in advance to those that have been there and done this!

Ah the hell that is metadata. By the way there are other Squeezebox
plugins that work with and use custom tags. That does not appear to be
muso's main function. I like the approach that muso takes by getting
and using information from last.fm and amazon. The ability to view the
associated scans and text files is another great feature. I've spent a
great deal of time scanning covers and booklets and it's very nice to
finally have an easy way to view them.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] MUSO - Support Thread

2012-02-02 Thread camelx

Yes, the field PUBLISHER actually reads and writes the field
ORGANIZATION in files tagged with Vorbis Comments. There are a small
handful of tag mappings (three) for Vorbis Comments that are not
documented. To see them, go to Tools > Options > Tags > Mapping.

I wouldn't touch the two mappings of TRACK to TRACKNUMBER and YEAR to
DATE, but you could probably delete the PUBLISHER to ORGANIZATION
mapping from the table. Then, when you write PUBLISHER you'll actually
be working with a field having the same name.

As for whether that will work with MUSO (or your other music
applications), you'll just have to try it. I wouldn't be surprised if
one application expects the data in ORGANIZATION and another in
PUBLISHER. To work around that you may have to write the data to both
fields.

I can adapt muso to whatever we agree is the best standard. I can also
look for BOTH Publisher and Organization and read either into a new
muso field (which I'll call Publisher or Label) - the only problem then
is what to do if both are present (and different). Similarly Orchestra
and Band, Performer(s) and Soloist(s), etc.

Here is the only "standard" I have heard of
http://wiki.xiph.org/VorbisComment. If you support different comments
for the same muso field, I think the standard field should win if there
are conflicting values. The label/ORGANIZATION info should of course be
visible on the album and now playing page. Should one album have
different values, just pick one value to use for the entire album.

I think some attributes do not need a browse by option, just to be
visible in now playing and on a per album/track basis depending on the
nature of the tag.

Just to be clear: today I only sync muso with LMS. Will muso go the the
music files referenced in LMS (and visible to muso) and scan additional
tags into muso? Even if LMS and muso are run on different computers?

Currently synch with LMS and file scan (reading vorbis comments) are
two separate processes. I can look to making a combined synch though.

Btw, for now I left my FLAC tag of Organization at Organization.

copy that to performers for now to get it to show up in Muso.

2012-02-05 Thread jezbo

New versions are announced here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81685&page=99

FYI, Muso doesn't write edited database attributes back to the song
file metadata, the database is considered private to muso - i.e. muso
cannot be used as a tag editor.

Muso does use the tag information to set up the database attributes
initially on a file/folder scan, but not on a sych with LMS (it uses
the LMS attributes from its database in this case). So, muso's next
version will be reading SOLOIST or SOLOISTS ogg vorbis comments on a
folder scan into the Performer field.

There's no field in muso to put Label/Publisher yet - I can create the

Next version will have some basic functionality for controlling
foobar2000. I'm using the command line interface (CLI) rather than the
full SDK, plus a bit of the Runcmd plugin
(http://foosion.foobar2000.org/components/?id=runcmd). This is a
one-way street - I can control just about all aspects of the player
that I need to (playing, queueing, forward/back, volume control, etc),
but I cannot receive status information (so it won't show Now Playing
information in muso for example).

The full SDK is going to take a LOT of work to be able to use it for
full integration, it might remain out of scope for some time. However
I'm hoping there will be enough functionality available via the CLI to
still make this a useful feature.
