[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Roots rockin', hip-shakin', soul-swayin' music!" Playlist for April 20, 1999 Tonight we wrapped up our MerleFest '99 contest by announcing the winners of our essay contest. The lucky contestant was Colleen Murdock and her husband, neither of whom had ever been to MerleFest before, but who are excited to go this year. The contest was a tough call - we had a number of good essays to read through, but Colleen's was the consensus favorite. Her essay can be found on our website: http://www.msu.edu/~depolo. There will be several runners-up who will receive CDs of MerleFest artists. The Americana Department here would like to send a big thank you to the labels that contributed, particularly Sugar Hill, Rounder and Skaggs Family/Ceili. We'll see you all down in Wilkesboro, NC! We also featured the new Spade Cooley reissue on Bloodshot Revival/Soundies. Playlist for March 23, 1999 Tonight's show was packed with musical sets of the great shows happening this week in and around the Lansing area. We started the show off with Lyle Lovett, who was probably taking the stage in nearby Ann Arbor (Michigan Theatre) just as our radio show began (we unfortunately could not attend). Next we interviewed Andrew Kinsey, the bass player (and occasionally ukulele player) for Salamander Crossing, who played the Ten Pound Fiddle on Friday, March 26. Then we dug into a huge set of Steve Earle, the Del McCoury Band, and Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band, who played at the Michigan Theatre on Wednesday March 24. Finally we played a set of Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics, who played at the Intersection in Grand Rapids on Thursday, March 25. Needless to say, there are an abundance of good shows 'round these parts. [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Roots rockin', hip-shakin', soul-swayin' music!" Playlist for March 16, 1999 Tonight's show featured an extra helping of music from Steve Earle, The Del McCoury Band, and Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band - a result of the upcoming (and highly anticipated) show from Steve and the Del McCoury Band on March 24th at the Michigan Theatre. In addition to all the music, we gave out two pairs of tickets to that show and a copy of "The Mountain". Judging by the huge number of calls, the listeners in and around Mid-Michigan are just as excited as we are. We also gave out tickets to the Ten Pound Fiddle show, which features Mad Pudding this week and we gave out copies of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder's outstanding new CD "Ancient Tones". Also, given that it was St. Patrick's Day Eve, we dug into some Celtic music. Oh, and one request we have to any one out there who might see the V-Roys live: Please tell them that Michigan is not such a bad place! Apparently they had a disasterous show in Detroit a week ago that culminated in a fight between Scott Miller and some local idiots in the crowd. Re: Tweedy and the ghettoizing of alt-country
I love how Purcell makes the sly NCAA hoops reference below. That's dangerous, you know, in the presence of a bunch of music nuts ;-) D. At 09:01 AM 3/18/99 -0500, you wrote: Evan wrote: Maybe it's just the djs at my radio station, but I think the roots-rock of the 80s was more acceptable to the alt-rock (wasn't it called college-rock back then) hipsters of the mid 80s than it is today. That was definitely the case in these parts. I discovered a lot of the 80s roots rock thru WOXY/97X, a great (well it used to be, dunno if it still is) independent station out of Miami, OH (home of Wally Szerbiak) that Jennifer Heffron and I bonded over. They'd think nothing of playing Steve Earle, Green on Red or Dwight next to the Cure U2. I vaguely remember Dwight's version of Little Sister being one of their most played and requested songs one year. I haven't listened since I moved back to town, but by the early 90s, I know they'd switched almost exclusively to "modern rock" (or was it postmodern?). Also, on the local university/hipster music scene, some of the most popular bands were rootsy ones (Libertines, Bucking Strap, Warsaw Falcons, and so on). Now, the closest thing in that scene to a popular rootsy band is the Ass Ponys. I heart Green on Red. So does Paul Kirsch, I hear... Playlist for March 9, 1999 As East Lansing and the rest of Mid-Michigan were buried in a late winter snow storm, we sat in comfort in the WDBM studio core, gazing at the Weather Channel that showed us all the snow. Re: Recordable CD Players... how does tracking work?

I picked up a La Cie 4x write/8x read CD-R unit for my Mac last week, and Toast (along with the Audio Extractor) is *really* easy to use. I've already done a full set of system backups, as well as burned a custom audio CD or two. All of them were easy and fast, with no problems at all. Making an audio CD, in fact, took less than an hour- you capture each individual track to your hard drive (which takes about 30 seconds per track, because computer CD/DVD drives read at a much higher speed than the audio CD standard) and then write the CD once all the tracks are captured and put in the proper order. Nothing to it. CD-R drives aren't super cheap (mine was under $300 with a 10-pack of discs), but I'm thoroughly impressed with mine, and the backup capability alone is worth the price. Tom A quick question: What if you are copy a live recording (such as a bootleg) that is indexed, but there are no clear spaces on the original? Is this easy to replicate or do you end up either keeping the entire recording as a single track or putting annoying blank spaces in between the tracks? Also, can you control how long the blank spaces are between each track? thanks -- Doug

Generally, but not always true; the CD drive has to support digital audio extraction, and not all of them do, though the feature is more likely to be missing on older drives than new ones. If your CD player plays audio CDs, will extract digital audio to disk? D.
Wreck on the Highway
Does anyone out there know who originally wrote and recorded "Wreck on the Highway"? I understand it was credited to Acuff-Rose, but the original author was someone else. What is the first known recording of this song? Also, "Crazy Arms", many people know Ray Price's version, and it was written by Mooney/Seals, but apparently Ray recorded it because another version, by Kenny Brown (?) existed that was *really* bad and Ray decided to re-record it. Does anyone know more about this or even have the original version? thanks -- Doug

As far as I know, there's no audible difference, but there's a financial one, as a friend of mine recently discovered: the standalone, home units require discs that cost substantially more than the ones used in computer peripherals (he says he's paying $6-$7 a disc, as opposed to $1-$2). As I understand it - and if I'm wrong, I have no doubt that someone will correct me - the difference is related largely to a royalty that goes to the record companies, purportedly to offset the cost of unauthorized duplication of CDs; the discs used in the computer peripherals are exempt because of their double duty as data storage media. Jon Weisberger Kenton County, KY [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://home.fuse.net/jonweisberger/ How does this industry kickback work? Do labels like Bloodshot, Hightone and Rebel see any of this? Seems suspicious to me. Is anyone out there using a computer peripheral for music duplication? How is it working? D.

Besides the difference in price for media noted in Jon's reply, the hardware for stand alones is more expensive as well and not nearly as versatile. Stand alones won't create CD-ROMs, for example. I've have my Plextor 4/12 for just over a year now, and have burned over 150 CDRs without any major problems, and I highly recommend it. Plextor has an excellent reputation for quality and customer service, but they are also among the priciest. If you don't mind rooting through a lot of pointless debate, the comp.publish.cdrom.hardware is an excellent starting place for more information. What is required for this, software-wise. How much was your Plextor 4/12? D.

Playlist for February 16, 1999 One of the great things about being broadcast on Tuesday nights is that we get to do a Mardi Gras show every year on Mardi Gras. In addition to warming the studio with the sounds of cajun and zydeco, we were visited in-studio from the East Lansing band Pub Domaighn AND we played some brand, spankin' new cuts from the Sovines, who are set to release their first full-length album. We also gave away several pairs of passes for the Sovines' TT night at Mac's.
