Chad said that he was reminded that the V-Roys were the best live band in America. I agree. He also said: Bare Jr. on the other hand made me feel old...even though I am not fairly young compared to the demographics of this list. They were pretty good, but they were SOOO LOUD and repetitive. I am still having a hard time really getting into the album cause so much of it sounds the same. I had the same problem with their live show. Bare Jr. makes me feel young. I absolutely love their album, and their live show (the first time they've played here) lived up to all my expectations. They were rocking hard on the very first song. It's nice to see a band give 1000% even when the gig is 75% empty. A friend of mine noticed how polarizing Bare Jr is, though, specifically with my friends here who often agree on music. Half of my friends LOVE them and half HATE them. I love 'em. Deaar postcarders, the guitarist was wearing pajamas, but they didn't have bunnys on them. Should I hate him? Please advise. :^) See ya. Re: Updates
here's the piece Don's talking about: Ruminations on SXSW '99 and the "Alt.Country" phenomenon from an insiders perspective (and no, it's not me) : Well another SXSW has come and gone. And sure I saw a few good bands and hung out with old friends, but overall I am left with a really bad taste in my mouth about the state of roots music. I spent several afternoons and evenings watching some of the worst "music" I have seen in a long time. And most of these shitty bands were playing in the country, roots, americana style. One of the biggest problems with these bands is their obvious lack of musicianship. I'm no musical snob and every player doesn't have to be a virtuoso, but c'mon some of these folks can't play at all. They sound like 7th graders who just picked up their instruments. I'm open minded, in my book you can still be a worthwhile band and not have a solid grasp on your instruments if you do one thing - write great songs. After all the spirit of the music can overcome missed chords and out of tune harmonies. Unfortunately this pack of lame bands failed miserably in the song writing category as well. Suburban hipsters singing about "wacky" white trash topics like trucker's speed and trailer parks just rings hollow with this music fan. These bands don't seem to know the difference between playing a musical style and parodying it. I'm not a country purist or some kind of traditional music elitist. I don't mind a little rock in my country or vice versa, the meshing of musical styles has resulted in some of the greatest music ever. But to me the bastardization of the country form as done by so many of these "alt-country" bands is as offensive as Pat Boone singing Chuck Berry songs. These "alt-country" showcases were packed with scenesters dressed up like they were going to a Hee-Haw theme party. Women in pig-tails and guys in spray painted straw hats that would surely get their asses kicked in an actual honky-tonk. This crowd adores these bands and doesn't seem to care what is being played as long as the band looks right and has a kitchy name. The most disturbing part of the whole SXSW experience was seeing music critics, label folks and radio programmers also eating these bands up like they were the new Merle Haggard. The fact that these industry folks can't seem to differentiate between heart felt, honest country music and dumb, patronizing, nonsense blows my mind. If you were to ask any hard working country musician the difference they would tell you its all about the sincerity of the performer. Any 99% percent of these bands got no heart. The saddest part is the proliferation of these dime a dozen Americana bands is what killing the whole roots music movement. The pie is only so big for musicians, clubs, labels, and the more slices there are the less there is for the folks who really love this music and deserve an opportunity to make a living playing it.

Re: Artist of the Decade? (My first Beasties rant)
I love "Paul's Boutique" - in fact I might call it one of the more important albums of the last quarter century, but artist of the decade? No way! Since Paul's Boutique, it's really only been select moments of brilliance in my opinion. In fact, I couldn't find a damn thing to like about the latest album, and only a few things on the last few. Paul's Boutique was the last thing they did where I can still put it on and listen from track 1 till the end, and there aren't many of those records that can do that. "Mighty Joe Moon" does that for me. So does every Pavement record and both Sparklehorse albums do it too (even though "vivadixie" is better). I could go on and on and on

Sparklehorse in Boston 4/16
Varnaline were pretty great here on Friday night, but Sparklehorse were simply spectacular - I love bands that fuck around with noises, which explains why I think Pavement is one of the best, if not the best, bands of the 1990s. And it's why Sparklehorse, if they had another couple albums out this decade, would be in the same boat as Pavement for me. Varnaline played a really good and enjoyable set, it just wasn't as interesting. And I love interesting shit. As an added bonus, we got Wooden Leg opening the set for 45 minutes too. I wish this band would tour more so you all could see just how damn good they're getting. A real treat to be able to see them pretty much whenever we want to. Certainly one of the best shows of the year around these parts -

I actually went to the horrible Reunion Arena in Dallas the Sunday after SxSW (Stars vs. Hurricanes) and I heard both the Old 97's 'Time Bomb' and Bare Jr's "You Blew Me Off" on the PA. Re: Scud Mountain Boys info needed
No more Scud Mountain Boys, I'm afraid to say. The closest you'll get is the Pernice Brothers, which contains the same singer, only this time it's more pop oriented instead of...slow. There are two other incarnations with former Scuds involved. One is King Radio, a record we at Tar Hut released last year that is heavy on the power pop, and the other is the Ray Mason Band, who just released a fantastic record called Castanets with Tom Shea and Bruce Tull in the band. If you need any more info, I'd be happy to provide it.
Re: Steve Earle and Del McCoury Band over America
Jason Carter's solo discs were priced at $17. I'd have certainly given them $15 for the record, and fully intended to, but I couldn't find my wallet when it came to the extra $2, which seemed a little gouge-y to me. No offense- so I'm a piker. You have to wonder how much Rounder is charging them for the discs...maybe the only way they can profit off it is to charge that much..

I know Dusty's name came up once or twice around here- or maybe that was just me comparing her sultry voice to that of Lucinda's on songs like "Right n Time." Anyway this is from AP. March 3, 1999 Web posted at: 6:47 a.m. EST (1147 GMT) LONDON (AP) -- Singer Dusty Springfield, whose husky, white soul voice fueled such 1960s hits as "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Wishin' and Hopin'," has died after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 59. Springfield died Tuesday night at her home in Henley-on-Thames, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) west of London, said her agent, Paul Fenn. "She was one of the icons of the music industry," Fenn said. "She was one of the most talented female singers of this century." Springfield's first hit was 1964's "I Only Want To Be With You," followed by a string of smashes, including "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." In the 1990s, she resurfaced with another hit, teaming up with the Pet Shop Boys for the single "What Have I Done to Deserve This." Springfield's breast cancer was diagnosed in 1994 shortly after she recorded her most recent album, "A Very Fine Love." She underwent extensive chemotherapy until 1995, when she was diagnosed as being clear of the disease. But the cancer returned the following year.

Re: Grammyszzzzzzzzz....
You know, I'm not really defending Shania, but did you ever stop to think that maybe she actually wants to be a pop artist or maybe - GASP! - wants to try to be both? Is there any law that prohibits an artist from trying to expand their musical sound? Sure, she's annoying, but it's equally annoying when people around here fault her for "not playing real country." Show me in the music rulebook where it says an artist must always and only play one brand of music and stay devoted to it for a lifetime. How come nobody's faulting the P2 worshipped Wilco for abandoning the country sound? If they were as popular and sold as many records as Twain, you probably would...(perhaps a bad comparison, but you get the point) As far as the outfits - who cares and big deal? I thought the P2'ers were open minded enough to not judge people based on what they wear. If she had worn a cowboy hat and boots, you all probably would have been all over that in a negative way, too. I can't stand her music. But geez, give it a rest.

Americana guesswork
There's a story developing here regarding the current state of "Americana." (TM)Who's going to write it? (c'mon Mr. Slack - tell it like it is) Caution: the following are assumptions, though I suspect close to the truth: Someone probably wanted Americana to still be Americana - in other words, keeping the current reporting stations intact, which for the majority are not huge and potentially impacting, and someone else probably wanted to slick it up a bit. Maybe start a singles chart. Change the name. Blah blah blah. The circle goes round and round and you can only suspect and theorize who wants what. Bottom line: the stuff ain't selling and not many people are paying attention to it, and maybe Gavin or whoever else involved the Americana mafia are finally beginning to realize it and feel the need for changes to be made before Gavin just gives up on it. I mean, when Dale Watson's only selling appox 10,000 copies, maybe some changes should be made. Who knows. I'm just guessing...I know I wouldn't want that damn job
Re: Americana guesswork
Of course, what we really need is our own Nirvana. After hearing a bit of their new recordings and considering their slight but important impact at mainstream country with "California Angel" I'm thinking maybe The Derailers are the right horse on which to bet. Therein lies the problem. The fucking thing is overhyped already. At least grunge started selling, THEN got overhyped. It's now been 6 years or so (arguably) that this genre/format or whatever gotten any attention and every year we hear the same bullshit - I remember Peter Blackstock saying "this is the one that's going to blow it open" about "Tomorrow the Green Grass." Less than a year later, he admirably put his tail between his legs in the same paper he wrote it and admitted he was wrong. And the year before that and after that it was another record. Every year it's something new that's going to blow it open. I have no idea why I am typing this. Oh well. -Original Message- From: JP Riedie [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: passenger side [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, January 19, 1999 4:18 PM Subject: Re: Americana guesswork There's a story developing here regarding the current state of "Americana." I mean, when Dale Watson's only selling appox 10,000 copies, maybe some changes should be made. Who knows. I'm just guessing...I know I wouldn't want that damn job First off, "The Truckin' Sessions" as of last week has sold less than 4000 units since its release in August. So the sales impact of "Americana" radio is even less than most assume. Anyway... I think the name "Americana" sucks. As a word it connotes a wide array of meanings, none of which immediately bring to mind the kind of music that seems to be be taking over a chart that was once dominated by folky singer-songwriter crap. My thinking is that Gavin should take advantage of the widespread disgust and disillusionment with country radio (which truly is the root of all evil - Nashville makes records according to the perceived tastes of programmers) by scrapping the folky reporting stations, renaming the chart "Alternative Country" and positioning the whole thing similarly to the way Alternative Rock was positioned in opposition to AOR ten years ago. How will this help sell records? First, changing the name from the hazy "Americana" to something with the word "country" in it will clearly define the whole raison d'etre of the format as an actual alternative to the dreck on country radio, Though my research is informal and anecdotal (my mom and her friends were the focus group) I believe lots of country fans are sick of country radio. A clearly defined format can be more easily marketed to disaffected country fans. Second, and most importantly, as alternative rock caused AOR to loosen up and start playing U2 and REM then Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, then Rage Against the Machine, I believe even a moderately successful alternative country format will force mainstream programmers to broaden their playlists to include acts such as The Derailers, Dale Watson, and Kelly Willis and maybe even consign Shania and her ilk to some sort of Adult Contemporary Country format. Then we will begin to see sales impact. Of course, what we really need is our own Nirvana. After hearing a bit of their new recordings and considering their slight but important impact at mainstream country with "California Angel" I'm thinking maybe The Derailers are the right horse on which to bet. Well, you could say that Skaggs did; it's fairly well-known that the deal with Rounder was concluded after a prospective deal with Sugar Hill fell through - in fact, the latter had made it into print at one point. Don't remind me. :^) I don't know what you mean by "into print" though. I mean a story was published reporting the Skaggs Family Records/Sugar Hill deal as an accomplished fact; I'm pretty sure I remember which publication, but since I'm not positive and don't have the time to leaf through back issues, I'm not going to ID it. Sugar Hill's deal with Ricky Skaggs was done. I remember sitting in a meeting at Rounder's office the day Rounder made the 11th hour snatch of the album from Sugar Hill and we were all sitting there looking at the matchprints and the films of the Skaggs record art with Sugar Hill's logo all over the thing - the art was already done! The only thing they changed was the logos. I specifically remember someone in "upper management" saying, and I quote, "Sugar Hill's not gonna be happy about this." Oh, the stories. I don't know if there was bad blood about it between the two labels, but that's the truth..
