> How are you measuring this speed? Are you going by how fast web

Obviously I should be clearer. I have the 'Bird connected to a 10/100
switch of my network where I have other macs: G4, G3, iMac and a
TiBook. I tried also connecting with a crossover ethernet cable
directly to computers, even to the GigaBit ports of G4 or the TiBook.
The results I get (30-50 Kb/s and max 150 Kb/s) are of course in
kilobytes per second and measured with stopwatch or SpeedDoublers
Finder copy speed reporting. I transfer files on my local network where
I should be getting more like 500 Kb/s since the AAUI on the PB540 is
10 Mbit/s. If I do launch iCab to do some surfing it feels very slow
and I bet a lot of it is due poor network performance. I am connected
to the Internet with Cable (2 Mbit/s) so that should not be a problem.
I thought that perhaps the internal disk is going flaky and have tried
copying files from a CompactFlash (in an PCMCIA CF adapter in a PC card
cage) and got about 400-500 Kb/s transfers so the problem must be in
the network. Either the AAUI is so slow or the transciever is. that's
why I thought that a PCMCIA 10/100 (or just plain 10 Mbit/s) might do
better. What do you think? I also considered putting a wireless card in
it since I do have AirPort inhouse as well.

Regards,
Boris

PowerBook 500 series batteries-- Help?

2003-02-13 Thread Alan O'Neil
I have a couple of PowerBook 500 laptops here, and I don't have any
batteries for them. According to the service manual, the batteries are
supposed to output 10.8 volts. If my math is right, that means exactly nine
1.2 volt rechargeable AAs.

Would it be feasible to fabricate a battery holder case to fit the slot on
the PowerBook and then fill it with high-capacity NiMH batteries? I'm not
convinced that nine batteries can even fit in that slot. Any help here? Oh,
and I hear that the batteries are the "intelligent" kind-- would that post
a problem when replacing with "dumb" battery rebuild packs?

Thanks

Re: PowerBook 500 series batteries-- Help?

2003-02-13 Thread John Smith
I don't know much about the whole battery thing, but my guess would be that
the Powerbook would not particularly like running off, and charging up AA
batteries. Like you say, the original batteries are 'intelligent' so I'm
sure there will be a communication of some sort between the computer and the
battery. If the battery doesn't talk back, why would the computer think it
is there?

None the less, I am intrigued to know if it is indeed possible... :-)

My 2 cents.

Not anymore. In the past, Apple had both the floppy version of System 7.5.3
available online, as a series of single 1.4 MB floppy images, and the CD
version, which consists of 19 parts of one big image file that can be burnt
to a CD-R.

The floppy version is no longer available for download, for some reason.

2003-02-13 Thread John Brownsberger
If you can locate an old battery, they can be rebuilt. I had one done for
me for $51 - new ones are around $100 - 120. I don't think your idea would
work, but it is at least worth a try. By the way, if you do want to rebuild
an old battery either yourself or have someone do it, I'll sell you one for
$10, plus postage. Mailing being cheapest rate possible. I have two old
ones. John Brownsberger

Bob,

Their is a special adapter for the 3400, but if you do not plan to use both
the ethernet and modem at tthe same time you can hard wire either through the
rear port.

Yes -- and I never tried to construct a whole system that way, just the
emergency boot disk floppies for 7.5x & 8.5.

The RJ-45 connector on the back is for both Ethernet and modem. The
laptop originally came with an adapter cable that brought out two
connectors. But you can use it with either without the adapter.
It's best to not use it with a two line phone jack (unless you use a
single line cable, two wires only) as the second line is on the same
pins as one of the Ethernet pairs. Both can be used simultaneously.

I have looked there, and the only FULL INSTALLATION of "System 7.5 version

Okay, I'm very curious how you managed that.

I downloaded System 7.5.3 12of19.part.bin, and tried to coax Disk Copy into
doing something other that throw me an error message with it, and failed.

It's been almost a year ago that I did it...IIRC I had to download them
in order because you have to have the first one (smi.bin) in order to
do anything with the others. D/L #1-19 each on their own floppy and when
you go to install you have to create a folder on the machine you want to
install to and transfer each disk into that folder and then start from
the #1 smi.bin. I remember it took me quite a long time to figure out
the process with alot of going back and forth but perserverence paid
off. If you seriously need this let me know and I'll try to reconstruct
the process in depth for you.

Here is the instruction from the same web page for mounting the 19 disk images on your
desktop, which you can then copy to floppy disks:

Name: System 7.5 Version 7.5.3

Released: January 30, 1999

Requires:
System 7.5.3 requires an Apple Macintosh or PowerBook computer with at
least 4MB of RAM. Note: newer Macintosh and PowerBook computers
require versions of System software higher than version 7.5.3 in order
to operate. See TIL article 8970 for information on which CPUs support
System 7.5.3.

Description:
This is the North American English version of System 7.5 version
7.5.3, which includes the following system updates: System 7.5 Update
2.0 and System 7.5.3 Revision 2. For further information on System
7.5.3, please consult the Technical Information Library.

Instructions:
This software is available as 19 parts of a self-mounting Disk Copy
image. Download all 19 parts to your hard drive and then double-click
on the first part to mount the compressed disk image on your desktop.

Note that self-mounting Disk Images require Mac OS version 7.0.1 or
later. If you are using a version of Mac OS prior to this, you can
download the System 7.5 Network Access floppy disk and boot your
Macintosh from that to use this software.

Thanks Fabian.I wish I would have seen this back when I was trying
to make my floppies! I had very little idea of what I was doing, being a
total Mac newbie at the time! IIRC I was having to reformat each floppy
as I went along cuz they were all IBM formatted. ;-)

No, thanks. I guess we were both right.

There is no way you can make a set of install floppies from those parts,
like I said.

They do work together to make ONE SINGLE image that contains the installer.

Technically, you didn't use the installer to make floppies; you used
floppies to transfer the installer image to a hard drive.

Yes, I see what you mean. I guess I go by...Whatever gets the job done,
whether it be orthodox or just by luck. Having no formal training in any

There's a good Japanese site with lots-o-drivers for Mac NIC cards (including the one
mentioned in the message to which I am replying):

Re: Mac OS

2003-02-13 Thread RaceCivicR
I've gotten it to work fine (tested on a 520c and Quadra 800). Don't get me
wrong, it's not easy but I'll do my best to describe how I did it. First I
downloaded the whole 19 files and then decompressed the whole deal (gives you
a folder which is your installer). Anyway, I then used it to instal the basic
OS (custom instal) onto a blank hard drive which now gave me my system
folder. Now the hard part. I then used disk copy to make me a blank image
file (use standard hfs) and threw the installer and the system folder onto it
so now when you open the .img file you have your installer and the system
folder on it. I then used Toast Ti 5, selected other (hold down on the mouse)
and then selected Mac Volume and this gives you the option to select the
mounted image. Select it, click bootable (gotten weird results selecting
optimize on the fly, might want to unclick it) and presto a bootable 7.5.3
installer.

You may also want to add the 7.5.5 updater to the disk as well. Just be sure
to put the updater into it's own folder, make an alias and put that next to
the 7.5.3 installer icon.

   Jake

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote...>

I tried to burn bootables cds for older macs and it doesnt work - the

old mac freezes -

they are all like discimages that is started from the first one,

there is no install system present in theese diskimages - just an

installer,

you could as I finally did take the system files from a 8.1 cd and

then burn the diskimages together with that, start from the 8.1

system on the cd and install the 7.5.3 wherever you want it.

Re: Problematic 1400+ethernet?

2003-02-13 Thread RaceCivicR
Thanks for all the reply on my problem. I ended up calling my provider and
asking them what the problem was and after a good 30 minutes of
troubleshooting it worked. Come to find out it was the cable modem that was
the problem (go figure). For some reason the modem can only read one computer
at a time and any time you add hardware to it or hook up another computer, it
must be unplugged for a minute (to erase it's internal memory) and then
hooked up to the computer when it's off. The reason all the info was showing
up in my TCP/IP when hooked up was because it was using the settings used by
my desktop (that's what the guy said). But now it runs, but the weird thing
is it's the most reliable without any ethernet or driver extensions (it even
helped to remove the PC card extension). But anyway guys, thanks very much
for the info!

PB1400 prob

I get a "Time Synchronization" error Type 41 about half way through
the boot up. And I'm not able to get it to boot from any internal or

"holding down the 'C' key" request to boot up from a CD.

Is it a pram battery issue?

Re: PB1400 prob

2003-02-13 Thread John Smith
Yep, holding 'c' won't work when booting up these machines, I can't remember
the exact combination, something like command-option-shift-delete when
starting up. Usually in times like this, I just hold down as many of the
typical buttons (i.e., option, command, control etc etc) and go from there.
I AM certain the delete button is used...

Another one you might like to try is booting up normally (i.e., without the
CD) and hold shift down, to turn all extensions off, including time-sync.

Your third option (and in my opinion, the best one) is to start up holding
the space bar down. Before any extensions load, the extensions manager will
pop up. Turn off anything to do with time-sync and click continue.

Good luck with it...

I've done numerous, but I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. (A little far to travel,
although many do like to come here for some reason!) The PRAM battery can be
very expensive, (http://www.ebatts.com/modelselect.asp?Model=1137514 has the 5
V Lithium Rechargeable with electrical connectors for $54.95 U.S.) but I picked
up 2 on eBay some time back for $15.00 U.S. each. They are happily residing in
my upgraded 1400s, which lost all of their startup glitches after the
replacement.

Shreve is selling new old stock 19.2 modems for the PB5xx for $2. Hard to beat that
deal. You might want to check them out.

Btw, be prepared for a fair amount of surgery. You have to disassemble a great deal
of the 5xx to install the modem. I recommend going slowly, and making notes along
the way.

Re: PB1400 prob

2003-02-13 Thread David Allen
Right on the money. The command bypasses the startup drive and looks for any
other OS. The joys of internal IDE/external SCSI device detection. I'd try that
route before investing in the labor and cost of a PRAM battery, although many
batteries seem to be biting the dust lately. Looks like the life expectancy of
the 1400's PRAM battery is about 5 to 7 years.

Which isn't really all that bad, I mean, I use rechargeable batteries in
torches, radios, computer mice, etc etc, and I don't think I've ever had one
last 7 years...

Thanks Gary. It would've helped if the 3400 had come with a manual ...
I'm a little embarrassed and very grateful. Thanks!

Bob, I started to send you the pdf, but it was a big email to send unrequested.

Here's a link to legacy manuals, where I got my copy:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/manuals.legacy.html

They are all there!

Just obtained a 3400c myself. Go to apple's webpage and download the
owner's manual and the tech manual in PDF format. The owner's manual
alone is over 189 pages. I printed it out and made up a looseleaf manual.
It's been invaluable. You can even download the designer's notes, over
150 pages. WWW.Apple.com .Look for the legacy section. Regards.

PB 500 series Trackpad moisture problem?

2003-02-13 Thread Alan O'Neil
Hi everyone. I am in the process of setting up my PB 540c for general use
(and later to take to school :)).

Anyway, I have noticed that my fingers sweat a lot when I am using a mouse,
trackpad, or even my Newton's stylus. It seems that even a small amount of
moisture on my finger can cause the trackpad on my Blackbird to behave very
erratically. I have tried holding a small piece of cloth on the end of my
finger when using the trackpad; it functions perfectly then. Does anyone
else have this fingertip mositure / trackpad problem? Anyone know of a
solution that does not involve holding cloth on the tip of my finger?

Thanks

Alan, you'll need the electronics in an Apple battery, I seriously doubt
the 'Book will charge a dumb pack. However, I reckon the 'Book might run
on a pack if you can use some sort of external charger. That doesn't seem
worth the trouble.

However, the _8_ cells you need to rebuild an Apple battery can be
purchased as a 9.6v NiMH pack sold for RC hobbiests. I bought a 2100mah
set at the Rat Shack for ~$25, works fine and is actually a little
lighter than the original. BTW, they do put out around 10.5v to 11v when
fully charged.

hth,

Dan K

PB 540c, System 7.1.1, and Hard Disk

2003-02-13 Thread Alan O'Neil
Sorry guys for the flood of questions about the lovely Blackbirds, but I
have another thing to ask. I just now downgraded the system software from
the 7.5.3 that came with it to my own enhanced System 7.1.1 Pro (with all
the features that make it comparable to 7.5.3). Anyway, when I chose
"restart" from the special menu in 7.5.3, the PB restarted like you'd
expect any Mac to restart: black screen, then boot process. But when I
restart from 7.1.1, the HDD spins down when the screen turns black then
spins right back up again when the boot process starts. Any ideas how to
stop this from happening? Not life-threatening, just a bit annoying.

Thanks a lot
Muchas Gracias
