1400-9600 set-up

2005-09-29 Thread Rick McCutcheon

Greetings Mac folks,

I want to setup a PB1400 as the monitor and keyboard for a PM9600/G4.
It's been too long since I've worked with pre-OSX machines. Help with
what I need and how to do it would be appreciated. I likely have what
I need in a closet, but will need to know what I'm looking for.

Both machines are running OS9.1 and both function perfectly well. My
goal (actually this is for my wife) is to have the 1400 sitting on the
desk, with the 9600/G4 under it providing the engine for internet
surfing/research while at home, and still able to carry the 1400 to the
university to write, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Re: 1400-9600 set-up

2005-09-29 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Thanks to both of you. I should have been more clear. By engine I
was meaning that I want to use the 9600 as the primary host machine,
precisely for the reason one of you mentions, it's still a great
machine with enough umph to be useful... My question was whether the
1400 could act as both monitor and keyboard for it. From what you've
both said, it seems the monitor part of the equation is possible, but
the keyboard is not -- which is fine, I'll just plug a keyboard into
the back of the 9600. (I don't have a monitor and although you're
right that their cheap, still don't really want another one sitting
around.) So I should have asked how to use the 1400 as a monitor
without having a primary monitor already hooked up to the 9600.

Cheers,
Rick

I am not sure how you would go about sending the 1400 keyboard input
to the 9600, Take the case apart and plug in some sort of connector
to the laptop keyboard cable? Sounds unlikely but not impossible. I
think files would more easily be transferred as stated above. With a
lot less hassle. Besides why not take full advantage of that
tremendous 9600 processor while at home ?
The 1400 would serve better as a adjunct to the 9600 rather than
the other way around.

Monitors are cheap . I got a great Viewsonic for ten bucks. And have
found others in the trash. Ethernet would be the way to go IMHO

I used to use Farallon's Timbuktu remote access to control a bunch of
machines on a large Ethernet. It will, nicely, allow keyboard input
from one machine on another. No matter what, since the host machine.
(which, in this case would be the 1400), is doing the processing, the
whole set-up - which involved a PowerBook 540c controlling everything
from 8100/110 down - only runs as fast as the machine running the
remote access application. It was marginally fast enough to do admin
tasks with. I wouldn't want to run any applications.

I accessed a lot of machines over 33.6 modem connections like this,
too. I called it click and wait...

I'd do the same with my 190, except for the fact that I still rely on

to go in the ol' glass cabinet, for sure.

My PB 170 complete with original receipt already has it's own special

Dan,

I write a lot of text as part of my work. The keyboard on the 1400 is
fabulous, perhaps the best keyboard of any powerbook, ever, far better
than the spongy one on this TiBook I'm using to write this message... I
tried a 3400 and didn't like it. Don't know the 2400 from experience.

button. When
it comes up all the way the screen goes black and I have to press the
brightness button to get it to come back. All this happens after I
zap the

not zap
the pram using the keyboard. When I try that the screen goes black
after a
restart and the sleep light comes on steady. After I reset the power

it works fine until I unplug it. When I plug it in again the sleep

comes on steady and I have to restart it with the power manager

leave it plugged in all the time it starts up fine. I have reset the
power
manager several times with the battery in and out as well as plugged
in and
unplugged for up to one minute. I also replaced the pram battery.
The clock
does not reset itself but other settings like the memory cache and

it is a
hardware problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
John
John, the problem sounds exactly like a low PRAM battery. You said
that
your put in a new PRAM battery, was this battery new or used?

I have purchased a used but good PRAM battery and it did not help.
I finally put in two new PRAM batteries (the 1400/166 uses two).
This solved my problems.
I also had a Wallstreet acting weird, and when I replaced the PRAM
battery,
all the weird went away.

Ken Vann
Thanks for the reply. The pram battery is used and I was afraid of
that. Would the lack of a good main battery have an effect on the
power manager reset?

John
John and Ken, this is just to confirm that I had the exact same problem
on my 1400 a few years ago and it was indeed the PRAM battery. Once I
got a new PRAM battery (one that really was new) the problems ceased (I
was in the university service shop and the guy there said, Oh, I can
get you one of those and he did and put it in - no problems
thereafter). I'm not sure how the main battery interacts with the
system, and don't want to confuse the issue inadvertently so will leave
it for others to respond.

Best,
Rick

Re: Better Performance on PB 1400

2005-05-03 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Well, as someone just said, don't get your expectations to high.
I'm a long-time PB1400 fan (still have 2 of them, one since 98 or so),
and I've never, even with a brand new battery, got 3 full hours of
actual run time (others may have). I have managed it with sleep
time, etc. And even if you did, within several months your new battery
would no longer be new. Two hours is very doable, and maybe with a
carefully managed set-up three might be possible for a few months
while the battery is still brand new (assuming you have the upgraded
processor that eats less power)

I would be sorry to see your hopes dashed It's a fabulous computer
(well worth applause) that I still use occasionally, although for a
host of reasons I've recently had to move to a slightly newer Book for
most of my official work. And I don't mean this as a downer, just a
reality check so you don't end up going to a psych as a result of
computer related depression Battery life was the only criticism I
had of the 1400, but it and the technology of its time, were fabulous
-- even with the limitations.

The keyboard, btw, remains to my mind the very best EVER made for a
laptop by Apple, bar none (let the flame wars begin :-).

It's just my experience -- others will have their own to add. I too
love the 1400 and have raved about it on many occasions (and suggested
long ago on this list that it was better than many that followed it,
only to be battered in flame wars... although not fully beaten).

PB1400 battery rebuild

2004-12-20 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Listers,

A couple of years ago or so someone posted a very nice description of how to
recell/rebuild a PB1400 battery. It included common problems/issues,
possible sources for the cells in both the US and Canada and a what not to
do note. It was both a description in the body of an email and archived as
a PDF file -- unfortunately I've lost it.

Can someone point me to it or at least something similar?

PB1400 - scsi cd-rw question

2004-01-28 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Does anyone here have experience of hooking up a LaCie CR-RW to a
PB1400c/133/OS8.6/64? The LaCie drive needs OS8.6, which is fine, but the
Toast 4 software that comes with it also recommends scsi manager 4.3,
which is not supported on a 1400 (to my knowledge). Is the 4.3 necessary,
or, as it says, just the optimal situation? Alternatively, could I use a
different version of CD burning software (what, I don't know) that would
allow this drive to work well-enough with the 1400? I'm aware that any
CD burner on this machine would be painfully slow, but that's not the issue.

Re: 1400 Processor Upgrade

2003-07-09 Thread Rick McCutcheon
I have two PB1400s sitting on my desk right now (one c one cs). I also
happen to have a 166 daughtercard sitting in a box on the shelf beside my
desk. Why, you might ask, is that 166 daughtercard sitting on a shelf when
it could be comfortably sitting inside one of these PB1400s? Because when
I tried to put it in them, ziiip - pop. Nothing. The machine
I am writing this on has a 133 Mhz processor -- the other one is the same.
If you find a way to make the 166 Mhz daughtercard work in a 117/133 --
short of replacing the MoBo to a 166 MoBo, which is a possibility, and why
I keep the card -- then I'm first in line to do it!!

In my research I found that there were apparently a *very* few 133s that
had the new ROM that would make it possible to use the 166 processor,
unfortunately, neither of mine do... (I think Mad Dog gave a link to a FAQ
on it). Whoever posted the note saying that they actually had a 133 that
was upgraded to 166 is the first real-world example that I have heard.
Does anyone know what percentage of 133s were made with the new ROM? Were
there serial numbers that could be used to determine which one you have?
The 166 Mhz processor, btw, can be identified by the little black button
sitting beside the backside cache on the card -- thanks to Malcolm for that
little note

Hi folks,

Looking for a definitive answer as to whether it is possible to replace the
133 cpu with a 166 cpu. I have read innumerable faqs, some saying yes, some
saying no way. Is this possible and if yes what is the qualifier as to
whether a particular 133 can be upgraded? Thanks.

FAQ on HDs for 1400 please

2003-06-20 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Can someone point me to a good FAQ or 2 about choosing and installing a
larger hard drive on the 1400? I recall that there are some limits and
things to note with this book.

Cheers, and greetings to many of you with whom I've enjoyed great
conversation in the past -- I've been lurking on digest for a few months,
gotta get that work done sooner or later, Rick

PS -- still think this 1400c/133 is a super little 'puter. Works great for me.

Re: renewed book

2002-12-07 Thread Rick McCutcheon
My wife and I had ours done at the same time (both 1400s), no charge for
the installation. I had consulted a couple of more experienced people on
the list and read the manual carefully. I think that I could probably do
it, although a *bit* of age has made my hands a *bit* less steady. But
given the reasonable cost for the new batteries, and very nice apple guy we
decided to go with letting him take responsibility for this job. We have
access to a university computer shop through my wife, hence the free
installation -- sorry to those who don't. And I expect not all
universities offer the service. Here you need either a staff or student ID
from this University to have access to the service, which includes the
products.

Just to repeat, both these machines are running significantly more smoothly
as a result. Perhaps the end of the story is to encourage folks to look
around locally -- I find that I can tell pretty quick if a tech person
really likes mac and the concept behind their original design, or whether
it is *just* a job. It seems to make a difference, although I am sure
there are those who do it as a job that do top-notch work at a reasonable
price. A part of my reason for staying with macs for the course is on
principle, so I like to know that the people I work with understand that
reason -- as I am sure many people on this list do

Cheers,
Rick

Just out of curiosity, what did the tech charge for the installation?

I've replaced them in both of my 1400s and I know it's a little work to
get at,
(at the front of the lower case by the touch pad) as the plug is very tiny and
the wires wrap under and through metal pieces. It is not a job for the
faint of
heart nor the mechanically challenged, as there are lots of parts packed
in the
1400 case. Working with tweezers and a lighted magnifier are almost a
must. (at
least for my old eyes and fat fingers)

Some people have just replaced the batteries, which requires some soldering,
but the entire plug-in battery module is well worth the extra money. I found a
wire frayed from rubbing on the metal framing on one of the old modules. I'm
not sure what would happen if it were to ground out the battery, but it
couldn't be good.

Re: renewed book

2002-12-07 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Your not raining on my parade, or anyone else's -- or at least I don't
think you are :-) I'm just telling you my experience. I would welcome the
experts views, too. If it's because the box was taken apart and tightened
up so everything inside connects better, hence works better, well, that's
possible. However, this isn't the first time I've seen postings on the
list mentioning better, more reliable operations after a PRAM battery
replacement. I too thought that it played a much more minor role --
holding the charge during swaps, etc., which is why I put off doing it.
this has always been a stable computer, but now it is even better. SO
maybe the advice is to take it apart, clean everything, replace any worn
parts, and put it back together and it will work better. That too makes
sense, because almost anything, from cars to computers, work better when
well maintained and worn parts are replaced before they break. So let's
hear what other have to say. It's an interesting question.

I am genuinely interested to hear from an expert, though, about what
role the battery plays while a Mac is actually running.

Re: Module Carrying Case?

2002-11-11 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Great idea -- fits the need perfectly, much thanks. Rick

I use pieces of foam rubber cut from a camping ground mat. (I buy the blue
foam camping mattresses sold at Walmart.)

Cut 2 pieces slightly larger than the size of the modules, cut 3 pieces to
act as spacers along the sides and bottom, glue the pieces together with
superglue or epoxy so that you have a pouch into which you can slide the
module. Superglue or epoxy velcro straps to close the opening and travel
without worry. 1 mat is sufficient for a few dozen cases, so you may want
to look around a hardware store to see what else you might find that will
work with less waste of material.

I use the excess for shelf pads, etc., so I don't have any waste. It makes a
great shock absorbing material for anything that needs to be transported. I
lined my computer shelves in an 18 wheeler and carried my old 840 AV, 13
Sony monitor, modem, HP printer and Visioneer Paperport over the road for
years. Tied to an AC inverter that supplied 110 V AC , I had a complete
office with me.

won't fit -- unless you get a larger one, which takes up too much room for
 travelling.

hardware for powerpoint?

2002-10-30 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Hello PB folks,

I'm not sure where to start with this, but I'm sure that someone on this
list can point me in the right direction to get the information.

My wife and I are interested in knowing if we can use our PB1400s to do
Powerpoint presentations with digital projectors that are now common in
board rooms, university rooms and so on.

We've just purchased PowerPoint (an earlier version) and I've been
wondering what's needed in the hardware department to hook up to the
projectors? I assume that once we get the hardware to connect, the
PowerPoint will work fine (famous last words).

Unfortunately, neither of us have video cards in these machines -- or is it
a serial type connector, or what??? I'm going to keep my eyes open to
actually get a look at one of the projectors -- I've never inspected one
close up (hence my absolute naivety on this). My concern is that they are
only USB or some such newfangled thing. But maybe there's a work-around.
Or maybe we're going to have to borrow the PC from my wife's work place --
ugh, %#$%%$#%

Thanks for your help,
Rick

First, I'm asking for a Video-Out Card to fit in a PB1400. (these come

Second, I'm asking for a DB15 Connector that plugs into the Video-Out card.

Third, I'm asking for a Mac video-VGA adapter -- which will ensure that

Re: hardware for powerpoint (summary)

2002-10-30 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Slight correction, for those watching the thread -- I should really be
refering to an expansion slot video card for the PB1400. This was an
option on the 1400; unfortuanately, not one I own -- shucks. All that sits
on the back of this machine winking at me is a very blank looking hole --
actually with a port cover on it.

One more thing: If you have 2 aftermarket RAM cards stacked, the 16 bit video
cards (non-Apple) will not fit. They require a single RAM card. ( I use a
single 48 Meg card to max out my 1400s to their 64 Meg limit. 8 Meg built in,
8 Meg Apple RAM card in the Apple RAM slot and 48 Meg card in the RAM
expansion slot.) The Apple 8 bit video card allows use of stacked RAM, so a
pair of 24 Meg cards can be used with them.

VERY helpful, since I have stacked RAM So I'll be searching for an
Apple 8 bit video expansion slot card (wouldn't that have been a super
downer if I got the wrong one...)

I also run an Apple Presentation unit, which adapts the Apple VGA video out to
allow connection to regular televisions. (I use a big screen TV in my
classroom instead of a projection unit.) They are available on occasion on
the LEM Swap list as well as eBay.

Will watch for this as well so that when I get back into a classroom
I'll have the option. I take it that this is yet another connector that
fits into the VGA Connector...

Geesh, by the time I'm done with this PB1400 it's going to be one souped up
machine :-) those of you who have been here for a while have probably seen
me slowly fillling in the pieces for my wife's as well It stems
from a commitment to promote horizontal technology, rather than vertical,
which emphasizes forced obsolescence.

Cheers,
Rick

Last month I installed 8.1 (via 8.0) on my 1400 and have been very happy

free upgrade that you can find on the Apple site, either as one big
download, or as parts. It's my understanding that the upgrade is well
worth the download time. In any case, it all works great on my 1400.
Cheers, Rick

I have a 1400 which I got with the 8.0 OS installed.
I was thinking of upgrading to 8.6.
It has 32 mb memory, 24 suggested by 8.6.
Any suggestions.
This is a primo unused book and I would like to treat it well
(so it won't bite) Any other ideas for upping?

What are the expeiences of those of you with 1400's?

Thanks, Mike Amato

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-10 Thread Rick McCutcheon

Hi, thanks for this - unless I'm looking in the wrong place, all this tells
me is that I have 32 Megs of RAM, but not how it is configured so I still
need to know what upgrade card to buy... I'm open to being corrected
though! Rick

Try going under the apple menu, click on apple system profiler, that should
tell you what ram is in there, without opening it up

 can handle a 1400? :-{)

Anyway, my reason for opening it is to determine the configuration of the
current 32 Megs of Ram in preparation for maxing it out to 64. Eventually
 leading to a G3 card.

**Will it be clear once I get inside what the configuration is? Does each
card say something obvious like 24RAM on it?**

I assume if I'm lucky, the previous owner will have had 12 standard and
added a 24 to get to 32. This would leave me to get a 32 Meg card. If
there was 16 originally it would have either another 16 meg card or two 8s
(is there even an 8Meg card option?).

The worst scenario would be for there to be two 12Meg cards already filling
the expansion slots, which would mean taking one out and putting in 32 for
a total of 56 is this correct? Or is there such thing as a 40 Meg Ram card
(I've never heard of such a beast). I have seen a 48 Meg card, and that
would add up to 60Megs with the original 12 - or 64 if it started out with
 16 - am I missing something?

 Thanks for your help,
 Rick

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-10 Thread Rick McCutcheon

Ah-hah... that's maybe why, I'm on 7.6.1. Ironically, last week I finally
bought OS 8 - hasn't arrived in the mail yet... sounds like it was worth it
though... so, I guess that means I have to open it?... appreciate your
help. Rick

(PS: this list impresses me so much... I thoroughly enjoy reading
everything, even what doesn't apply to my case - folks are truly friendly
and helpful on the list.)

Rick
Don't know what os you are running, but under os 8...you should see BUILT IN
MEMORY, with an arrow to click...if you click on that arrow, it will open
like a folder, and tell you what chips are in there...
Hope this helps...otherwise, it's pretty easy to open the 1400...even I can
do that...I am not techie at all...the ram cards should be marked with their
size...

So you have the standard 16MB - 8MB logic board + 8MB Apple card plus a 16MB
upgrade card.

So you need to add a 32MB card for the maximum 64 MB.

3rd party 1400 zip module?

Some early 1400/117 shipped with a 4MB apple card for 12MB base.

You are spot on - there COULD be 2x8MB in the customer RAM - VERY unusual,
in handling some 50 1400s over the years I've only twice seen 8MB customer
RAM cards.

Possible but I'll go 33/1 against.

Is it safe to assume that any 32 Meg card advertised for a PB1400 will
be the
right one (assuming an honest vendor) and it will piggy-back onto the 16 Meg

Assuming both the 16 and the 32 have pass thru connectors to allow them to
be stacked, there is a FAIRLY GOOD chance.

Some 16 and 32 MB combos DON'T work, the RAM spec as always was open to
change/interpretation and some 16s don't work with some 32s, again I've
seldom seen it, but you are best to get it on sale or return just in case.

Good sensible questions.

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-10 Thread Rick McCutcheon

i'll watch for this , Cameron, and report back when all is said and done
(at least with the RAM) rick

now that i've made a commitment to this little computer that i've grown
very attached to, probably too much so, but i love this keyboard, i will be
fixing it up to the best it can be, more-or-slightly less (i'll probably go
with a slightly slower processor card... my kind of work - mostly writing -
doesn't need high power processor speeds: the most important program for me
remains Word 5.1A with Endnote 2.2 integrated.)

now, i'm just plain curious if i have it right in my head, then it
goes like this: this rig always shipped with 8 on the motherboard; and
  there is a further fixed 8 put in by apple for a consistent total of 16;

Some early 1400/117 shipped with a 4MB apple card for 12MB base.

Mine is one of these (1400cs/117). The problem with these systems is that
there are some 8MB Apple motherboard RAM pulls floating around that came
from more amply endowed 1400s, and while these are a cheap and easy upgrade,
when you have more than one stackable module in there too the system
starts getting weird. I got a large number of inexplicable RAM test failures
until someone suggested putting the old 4MB module back in, and then both
stackable modules started behaving. (Since the problem only manifested after
I bought a second stackable module, I initially suspected bad RAM and spent
a fair bit on RMA-ing apparently bad RAM until I put the 4MB module back.)

Have any Canadians on the list found a Canadian source for replacement
powerbook batteries that do not seem to be VERY expensive? Or am I just
screwed :-) ?

The best price for my PB1400 battery that I have found is $200 (+taxes =
$28 and shipping = variable), which is almost half what my book is worth on
the market.

I find comparable batteries (voltage, etc.) for $79-99 (= about 150 CND)
advertised in the US - unfortunately all the places I have seen on the web
either have a minimum dollar value for shipping to Canada ($500 or so) or
charge an extra $20-$30 US for shipping (which partly explains higher CND
prices) and I am not sure if I would have to pay duty on it as well.

Anyway, thought I would check. Since this is about businesses and money, I
think proper netiquette would be to be to reply to me directly, not to the
list.

Thanks,
