I think that any mac is better than no mac. and if she does not have a
computer then when you give it to her then she will be pleased.

for the cards I would go with the Orinoco card for wifi and for the cpu
card try and find a 300 wallstreet cpu card, Should give the best use,
hard drive any size over stock is good and the bigger the better. i
have a spare 64mb ram chip you could stick in the lower slot if you
want it then get a 256 for the top and that should be fine.

i also have a set of 10.2 install upgrade disk's that you could have
originals but you would need to find a copy of 10.1 to install it over
first.

The offer is there.

drop me a mail if you want them and the ram chip and also your address
as it is a gift for someone i see no need to profit from things that
are not used.

I didn't write the first quote. Only replied to it.

Why not go to Radio Shack or another supplier and get a spray can of
electronic contact cleaner. And on every single contact pin and hole
and card edge and slot spray the heck out of it scrub it with an old
toothbrush and repeat this process at least twice more.

Especially anything that stays in the machine when you swap parts out.

And have you swapped parts from the working machine into the non working one?

Check cables for damage and loose contacts and pins.

If you have a continuity tester test every wire end to end.

 Good Luck

Hi yes that is what I was saying you can take bits from either and put them
in to work but when the second one is together it will not go. If there is
more than 3 different parts from the bad Mac in my good 3400 that is dead
also. I can not understand it. It does not make sense. And should not
happen.

Re: More on my PB 190cs

2005-05-05 Thread vicki Duggan
I think that I should pipe in here because I think if you are going to use
the old hard ware on a daily basis then good for you. I still own a duo and
use it for text docs on my home network and print to an old laser-writer. I
also have an old classic hooked to a apple-one BW scanner and on to the
laser-writer.

When considering a computer you need to think what you are going to do with
it and use it before you buy it.

The 190 is a very nice old-world Mac and through the use of ide hdd and wifi
cards also flash ram memory cards CAN be used on a daily basis, for email
and docs also the myriad of 68k games that are out and about. So if you are
happy with the 190 keep it working.

I use a g4 ibook for daily mail and so on and if I want to do something
that needs screen size and loads of memory I use my G4 sawtooth, but still
like to get the duo out and use it because it is very easy on the eye with
the mono screen, If I had a 190 I would use that in-place of the duo. And I
am always looking for old books to do up and give to family and friends.

If so you might want to stop the restrictions and then check,
also how many wired ports are on the router? and do you have the G3

have any dead ports on the router.

My 3400 has the max ram in also, and both the orinoco card and the pro

I did have some trouble when first installing the card and i only had

wireless for 3400

2005-01-23 Thread vicki Duggan
Hi have you reset everything back to the factory defaults then tried
that. I know when i tried doing what you want to with my g3 and my 3400
i ended up downloading ipnet router worked wonders, but i could not
afford the licence, and it was cheaper to buy a wired/wireless router.
I went for the Netgear. since then i have upgraded my macs and still
use the Netgear to connect all my Macs to my cable modem via wireless
card's. if i ever drop a connection i just hook up to one of the
ethernet ports on the Netgear and reset everything.

current macs are G4 emac Latest model with airport extreme, Ibook 14.1
with airport 3400c with pro wirless card using ioxperts drivers, 1400
(backup mac) using Orinoco card, and my latest edition is a 500PPc This
goes in through ethernet as the pcmcia revision c cards are about a
easy to fined as a set of brass balls for the poor monkey on a cold
day. (but still looking) .

I've got a 5300cs with Green Light Of Death syndrome here. The sleep
light just stays on constantly, even when unplugged from AC and with
the battery out. I pushed the reset button in the back, GLOD. Held that
in for 30 seconds to reset the power manager, GLOD. Unplugged the pram
battery, GLOD. Unplugged the entire pmu from the motherboard, GLOD. Put
in a pmu from a different unit, GLOD. It won't restart from the
cmd-ctrl-power key sequence, nor does holding down the power key do
 anything.
Help - what can I do next?

Hi Mad Dog

been following the thread for a while and even though i have not had these
symptoms on a powerbook i have on a G3 266 desktop i had.

after trying everything to get it going again as a last resort i replaced
the cpu and it worked. I know that the cpu on the 3400 is soldered to the
board but i think that might be your problem. (a burnt out cpu)

FYI, the floppy isn't an IDE device. It's a raw SWIM device - it
talks directly to the floppy controller.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but there's a description
of most of the 5300's ICs in my FAQ.
http://www.alksoft.com/5300_FAQ/FAQ_2.9.php#298

There's also a few pictures (in order of increasing resolution) that
I've annotated here:
http://www.alksoft.com/5300_stuff/5300_Inside_Out.php (various)
here:
http://www.alksoft.com/5300_stuff/images/large_bare_mobo.jpg (600 kB)
and here:
http://www.alksoft.com/projects/scans.html (various up to 2.8 MB)

But according to the dev notes, the 3400 has the O'Hare (cough - a
busier IC than the Heathrow). O'Hare controls IDE/ATA, floppy, and
a heap of other stuff.

So it so happens that the floppy controller is also the same IC as
the IDE controller, but they are different logic blocks.

Good luck!
Drew

Why do I have the feeling OHare is one of the BGA ICs ?

I can try a floppy boot if I can find a boot floppy; its been a while.

2004-04-19 Thread vicki duggan

I have the bare bones version of the PowerBook 1400c (117mhz/750mb, no cd,
system 7.6.2) and was looking into souping it up to make it usuable for light
web, email, and word processing. I have a couple of questions:

 1) is it worth upgrading to a G3 Sonnet processor?

depends on how much you like the Mac
 2) Any ideas on good email and web surfing program(s) that actually work? I'm
currently running Netscape 4, but it crashes repeatedly.

icab
 3) Is it worth upgrading the memory? I currently am running VM on a 256 mb
flash card. Is this a viable solution?

works for me what is the Macs current ram
 4) Should I assume that it is pointless to upgrade the system software without
 upgrading the hardware?

go to 8.1 it seems better on PPc macs (personal choice before i get slammed)
 5) Where can I find a cd-rom module?

ebay are cheap enough
 6) Is all the above worth it?

as for question 1

I really love the old machine and would hate to dump it.

Any ideas, comments and/or cost estimates will be most appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 3400c boots only with a powered external SCSI device

2004-04-11 Thread vicki duggan
Hi George.

not that i know of have you done a hard reset from the rear power button or
a full os reinstall. or have you tried starting with a cd rom loaded in the
cd draw internally instead of externally.

i do have a spare 1.4gb hdd that i can send you and i can load a full copy
of any os you want on it. to see if that solves the problem. if it does then
you know what it is and can get a new one.
I did have this problem with a 140 pb once but i replaced the hdd and it was
fine.

 Hi vicki,
No, it's connected. It stalls and I can hear it going
into (what I think) is sleep mode. The presence of the
powered external SCSI device (either a CD-Rom or an
HDD) solves everything. The 'book runs like new, i.e.
boots normally from the internal drive.
I took it apart again after getting the pdf from Apple
Dev. notes. I can't see anything broken, yet. There's
no reset button on the 180 MHZ mob, is there?

Hi Mad dog.

could you mail me your url so i can try that adb mod on my 280c .

also where do you get all the bits from as you seem to have a never ending
supply.

also a few things on the Apple and Acer saga from last year.

Just got a lombard again a couple of months back, and being one for taking
bits apart and being curious. i have checked and same results as last year
the keyboard and modem also the trackpad cables and a few other cables
inside my new (to me) lombard are Texas instruments. ie: Acer.

also the keyboard from a UK version of a 355 travel mate note book (Acer)

when connected up to my 1400 works fine.

still testing some other bits.

Tom,

If you're looking at the top side of the motherboard there 2 large high
density chips near the center of the board, one of them is labeled PMU that is
the bad chip, I also have several bad 3400 logic boards with this same
problem, the primary symptom of the problem is usually that the computer won't
wake up, even after a hard restart, this is due to the multfunctionality of
the chip. I have been unable to locate a source for this part and since all
the boards I have are exhibiting the same symptoms part swapping is not a
solution.

Roger

The ~160 pin sqaure IC ? Damn, I can do it, but I was hoping for a
 smaller chip.

The 5300 has a very similar chip, so I might try that.

I also have 2 3500 mobos that dont even chime at boot. I suppose
they have problems not related to the ADB, so I could scrounge from
 them, too.

 thanks,

 Mad Dog

also as all of you probably have desktops !!! anyone with a 266 desktop do
not clock it to 315 mhz with the jumper blocks as after 2 weeks of constant

Hi

On the duo batteries that I have all you need to do is to depress the latch

If that does not work then all you do is lever it off carfully by the sides.

Hi all I think that there is a bit of looking to hard here for the answer.

If I remember correctly if you use a PB in scsi mode it shows up as a disk
attached to that mac. When you use an installer on that disk , Then (this is
the part that I think so someone correct me if I am wrong) The installer
will install the required software for the Mac desktop and not the
powerbook.

To get around it you need to drag the installer to the book hdd and then
disconnect and restart and do an install from there.

If you still have the G3 you need to connect it all back up and clear the PB
HDD. Then make a boot floppy restart the PB with it and then go from there
with a clean install.

Do this by dragging the complete installer to the drive of the PB and then
booting the PB from the floppy and run the installer you have already
copied to the drive.

If you need any help off list mail me.

Re: Q: anyone running an older powerbook from PCMCIA flash memory?

 Hey gang,

One day I will finish my manuscript. Thinking about picking up an old PB1400
as a travelling typewriter. I was thinking that I could purchase a pokey 1400
model so long as I can boot up and run silent from my 8MB PCMCIA memory card
for long periods of time. Is anyone out there doing this already? Any
comments on this setup would be appreciated.

Yes, I did read Dan Knight's great article on this at

but I was hoping to get a few more stories from the field.

 Thanks in advance,

Hi not with an 8mb flash ram card unless you want just the basic floppy
style start up and something like mac write 1.5

You need to go that bit bigger say 64mb minimum! still only a basic start up
though.

 As it says on lowendmac.com:

 display: 9.5 8-bit 640x480 color active matrix

 The 550c had 800 x 600.

 The others were limted to 640 x 480 at 8 bit, or 640 x 400 at 16 bit.
Hi not all of them did the 550c I owned only had 640x480 at 256 but with a
10.4 screen. Basically the same as the 5300c.

Re: 5300cs upgrade woes

2003-10-29 Thread vicki
Hi

With the video /ethernet card.

There should be a dongle that attaches to the rear next to the scsi port if
the connector fits into the book then chances are it is just a monitor
connector.

But if the connector sits out and clips on with hooks at either end chances
are you just need to find the dongle .

Also check your apple talk folder, if you have ethernet as one of the
choices that¹s another way to tell as the 5300 has no built in ethernet. so
for it to be a choice the drivers must have been loaded and the hardware
there for it to see.

 Alternate Ethernet

Normally when it says alternet ethernet it is a pcmcia card

What does the connector on the back of the mac look like if it is a hole

as that is what mine looks like.

Re: 540c and internet

2003-10-27 Thread vicki

My experience with 9.1 on my 167mhz PBs 500 has been quite positive.
However I think the key to using 9.1 on such older 'Books is to have
maxed RAM _and_ a newer, faster HD. For example, one of my 167s currently
has an original 800mb scsi HD and 40MBs RAM and it's a bit pokey for many
things. However the other has the same spec except it's got a 30 gigger
and it feels much snappier, much more responsive. You needn't use so
large a drive of course, most any modern drive of 6 or 8GBs or so will be
plenty fast enough for such older 'Books.

Where/ howdid you get a 30gb SCSI HD to fit in it? or even a 6 or 8gb SCSI?
Would love to try one out but havnt seen any for sale in the UK at a price
 that would make it worthwhile.?
Ours hax maxed out RAM and an 800mb SCSI - so your comments are very
 applicable.

 Gerald

Hi I think that he means that he has a 30gb ide with a ide to scsi adapter
card fitted as (some one correct me if I am wrong) but I do not think they
ever have or ever will make 30gb scsi laptop hdds .IT is way to expensive

Re: Getting a PowerBook 520c soon, some questions

2003-09-28 Thread vicki
I'm getting a PowerBook 520c quite soon, and I'm curious about a few
 things:

 1. It only has 12 MB of RAM and a 120 MB hard drive. What's the best OS
for it? Would 7.6.1 be okay? Should I get more RAM?
 2. How difficult is it to replace the screen? I have heard the passive
matrix color screen isn't very good, and I wouldn't mind moving to a
grayscale screen if it made things easier to see. How do the various
screens compare - would going from the passive matrix color to an
active matrix grayscale even be worth the increase in sharpness and
clarity? Or should I just get the active matrix color if I'm going to
 replace the screen?
 3. How expensive are PPC upgrades? I've heard of 100 and 117 MHz ones,
but I haven't seen more than one or two on the swap list. I'm guessing
 they're fairly expensive?
 4. Anything in particular I should know about? I've never used or even
 seen a 500-series PowerBook; the oldest I've used was a PowerBook 1400c
(which was pretty nice, excellent keyboard!). So if there are any
special issues or things I should know about, general advice is greatly
 appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Welcome

First when you get the power book use it for a day or so to see if you like
it before deciding to change anything.

Remember opinions vary what is not good for one is perfect for another.!!

Once you have gotten use to the book and like it (which I am sure you will)

Max out the ram and hdd!
Also if you get chance change the cpu with the 540 cpu as it is faster. If
you want to use it to collect email and need a pcmcia cage for the modem I
would suggest keeping the 040 cpu, and not thinking about the power pc
upgrade because then you would need to find a rev C cage and they are like
ROCKING HORSE SXXX AND IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND.

There is a guy on list who has lots of 5XX apps on his web site for battery
reconditioning and the likes, or you could mail me off list and I will send
some , also if you need the modem drivers for either the geoport or express
modem (which ever it has in ) let me know and I can send them also.

But the only thing to really remember is HAVE FUN WITH IT!!

Duos 230 and 250 have identical mobos, 210 is nearly identical, slower
processor though. 250 and 280 LCDs are near-enough identical, but the
cables are different. So a 250 LCD works in 280 with 280 cable, 280 LCD
 works in 210/230/250 with 250 cable. 210/230 LCD in a 270/280? 'Fraid
not, as no cable exists with a 210/230 LCD end + a 270/280 logic board
 end.

And if the 280/230 works, then the 280c should work, although there
isnt enough VRAM to drive the screen very well.
Nope, _won't_ work (as Vicki D apparently can attest.) The video circuit
doesn't know about color LCDs. Read the original Duo devnote for more
details about the original Duo video controller.

_Plus_ AFAIK no cable exists to connect _any_ Duo color LCD to a
210/230/250 LB. Hmm, how the heck did you actually do that anyway

Hi Dan

Never mentioned anything about a colour lcd
just said i have connected them up and no they do not work.

The exact parts i have are 4 duo mother boards .
2 screen from a 230 1 from a 210 1 from a 280 and a smashed 270 lcd.

because of the disbelief i will stick a hdd in a duo and get the system
processor spec from all 4 boards the i can say what board they are for
definate.

Max of 64Mb. I got the upgrade for mine at www.memoryx.net.

I put a 20Gb drive in mine. Overkill but it came in handy later for

If you are using an MP3 player or digital camera a flash media to PC
 Card adapter is useful.

You can get network cards for it, either wired or wireless. On it's
own, the 5300 isn't worth connecting wirelessly but if you already
have it and can find the right kind of adapter cheap it doesn't hurt.

You can also put a modem card in it.

After you have maxed out the ram and hdd and got the pcmcia cards you want.
Send me the plastics and I will cut the apple logo in the rear and spray
the plastics white for you (make it look like a compact ibook) Free of
charge but only to you as I have spare paint from the last one I did. If you
want pics I can send some. Also give me another week or so as my kids are
still suffering from summer colds and I am having a bit of a ruff time
during the day with them. (they can't seem to shake it and the doctor says
just rest them) NOT POSSIBLE WITH A 2 AND 1 year old THEY JUST WANT TO

Hi if you are just swapping out the hdd then you do not need to lift the

undo the screw and lift up and towards yourself. The cable is long enough

is on the side just before the rear leg and is covered by a little door
so thats where the confusion is.

3400.

2003-01-07 Thread vicki
Hi all

What the best OS for the 3400 all I want is a general opinion.

I have just recently picked up a TI G4 so I will be putting my 3400 to
reserve for a while until I find a good use for it but I want to re install
all the apps and give it a really good checking first so I don't (get it out
to use in a couple of weeks and find Glod)

Or I would be willing to swap it out for a 2400 say mail me off list.

Long and short - You don't have to find 8.1 on floppies. Get the CD,
stick it in your 6320, share it with your 190cs, and install 8.1 over
 AppleTalk onto the 190cs. Easy-peasy. Heck, I've done that w/ 8.5 on
my 5300. It took a few hours, but it worked.

Dog slow, but it will work and save you the headache of 1st tracking
down 8.1 floppies, then 2nd installing 8.1 via floppy (that's gotta be
 a nightmare!).

Alternatively, get the PowerBook SCSI adapter, hook your book up in
SCSI disk mode, and install 8.1 via the 6320. That would be super
easy, and the adapter's on eBay all the time. And if you ask nicely,
I'll bet someone on LEM-swap will give you a deal.

So unless you have another reason for wanting the floppies, my advice
would be to give up on that avenue. There are easier, faster methods.

Hi quick question on the super easy scsi disk mode what about bus errors
when you try to start the powerbook and if i am the only mac user getting
them where am i going wrong.

an even easier way is to get a hdd adapter to convert the 2.5 hdd to 3.5 hdd
they are about 5 $ on ebay and the whole install is twice as quick .

you want colour go for the 190cs these wher very nice powerbooks and
good for kids to use.

If she needs any PPC software (would let her run a much newer versoin of

Re: PB1400 - GW Solo 2100

2002-06-30 Thread vicki

Hi Mad dog

First do you pull everything to bits.

There are a lot of similarities i acer notebooks of the extensa 355
range also.

The screen is the same just different mounting holes(same connectors on
screen and motherboard), the pcmcia cage is also the same and the track
pad. i also used the floppy from an acer to replace the floppy inside
the moduale of my 5300c before i sold it.

I am very glad to see that it is not only me that has to find out how
things work before i use them.

 Was the screen compatible ?

It seems to be too much of a coincidence.

 Mad Dog
YES.

It was the same screen 11.3 the only differances with it is the metal
caseing that goes around the screen to bolt to the book cover.

even the connectors fit.

i still have a spare pcmcia cage from an acer and that looks identical
to the one that is in my 1400 now i will check if that work also not
this week though. i have sick babies in the house.

I know the track pad works as i used that in the 5300 also and then
installed the clickpad software to make it tapable.

Hi David i sometimes come across this when cross platforming drives.

Try it with out the jumper, and then if you have not already just use drive
setup .

One thing does the drive make any noise lick clicking or spining up then down

if so has it been dropped or any weight placed on the drive itself.???

Re: No display on PowerBook 150

 Howdy, all.

I'd posted once before about this with no answers, and thought I'd ask
 again.

I've picked up a PowerBook 150 which appears to work, but there is no
display. The PB is in very good shape with no scratches or dents so I'm
guessing it's not physical damage. I've tried resetting the Power Manager a
number of times. I've opened the PB up, and all the cables appear to be in
good shape. I've adjusted the contrast and brightness up and down a
 bajillion times.

When I press the power button, the PB bongs and then the hard drive starts
to churn like it's doing something. The backlight does come on but there's
 no picture.

 Any other suggestions?

Well in anticipation (and a bit of positive thinking) that Apple will fix my
newly acquired 5300cs right up, I would like to think ahead a bit. The main
reason I wanted (and can hopefully live with) this not-too-fast p-book is
because I will primarily use it for word processing while on trips. I've
got the G3 s900 Supermac for the heavy loads. For reference, it has USB,
Firewire, Ethernet, Serial, and of course scsi. Nearly maxed out on ram and
 various peripherals.

The 5300 came with a Focus 16 bit Vid Card and a TDK v34 modem.

So I'm thinking, what is going to be the best way for these two machines to
communicate with one another. Gonna have to transfer files somehow.

Right now, the p-book only has an 800 mb hard drive and I think 24 ram.
Will eventually need to fix the ram issue and probably get at least a 3 gig
drive. I understand Speed Doubler and Ram Doubler will be my allies. I'll
 accept that eventuality.

But I'd like to hear what some of you have done to interface? What works
best and what doesn't? The floppy just won't cut it I fear. One of those
VST Zip drives seems somewhat appealing. What other upgrade options are
there that have worked also? Is there a way to connect straight into my
main Mac? Would I be well-off picking up an ethernet hub? Are there other
options? Are there USB cards for using other peripherals?

For sure I won't be going any higher then 8.6 for the OS. Not with that ram
limitation anyhow. So I'd like to hear your ideas because I know many of
you have gone through the steps. You've also already helped out immensely.

So, while my new/used p-book is going through the REA at Apple, I can be
looking around for whatever I may need. Thanks!

 Dave

Hi Dave

Me again if you dont intend to transfer really large files and you dont mind
setting it up and haveing your tea whilst it works away all you need is a
serial cable and use appletalk. if you want a quicker version get a pcmcia
ethernet card and again use appletalk.

As for your usb sorry not happening there the 5300 is not cardbus equipt and
can't be made cardbus equipt??(anyone else know different).

i use the serial way on my 1400 and did so on my 5300 and use ethernet on my
3400 so anyone will work ok there also if you are going to get a bigger hdd
remember the scsi voodoo about partions and size in scsi mode (i think it is
4GB) anyone.

good luck

Victoria.
