If mounting drives isn't a must-have, you might just try enabling FTP on the OS X box.
That's been the easiest way for me to throw files around between OS 9-, Windows, and
my X box (not to be confused with Xbox, natch!).

Clark,

Thanks for the note. I should have said I tried *almost* all of Apple's suggestions
(of which yours was one). :-)

I actually first tried a less invasive method that Apple recommends. Here's what I
did (from Knowledge Base article 11368):

"1. Open Stickies from the Apple Menu, open a new note (any note).
2. Type anything (as long as characters are there).
3. Select Export Text from the File Menu.
4. Name the file "AppleShare PDS" (capitalization not necessary, but the spelling and
the space is important).
5. Save the file on the first (root) level of the Startup Drive.
6. A dialog box will come up asking if you want to replace the file? Yes, you want to
replace it.

Note: If it does not prompt you to replace the file (step 6 above), then it didn't
work. Check the file name and saving destination."

Result: worked like a charm! File Sharing came right up.

Thanks again for your help!

The usual cause of this is a corrupt AppleShare PDS file on the
harddisk. This is an invisible file at the root level of any shared
harddisk. The cure is to use ResEdit or another utility to make the
file visible and then trash it. Next time you startup FileSharing it
will create a new version of this file. The AppleShare PDS file
contains all of the privileges for folders so trashing it will reset
them.

Re: file sharing...now what?

2002-11-12 Thread KenKligerman
> > [The first and last device should be terminated.]

>And, if the active termination is used, I believe the terminated

1] Maybe I'm missing something but with the PowerBook connected to a
SCSI cable there isn't any possibility of additional SCSI devices in
the chain because there is no "pass through" or "courtesy" SCSI
connector on the PB, so it _will_ be the end of the chain because
that's all it can be! Furthermore, my understanding is that the PB as
a SCSI device in SDM is terminated. This has worked for my 540c.
Adding a terminator between the SCSI chain and the PB might prevent
signals from reaching the PB.

2] Also, rather than buying another cable, find the switchable
adaptor which allows you to use the same cable/connector/adapter for
SCSI Disk Mode or for hanging SCSI devices off your PB. I bought one
from PowerOn (available online but they happen to be local for me).
That way you can connect any DB25 cable to the wonky rectangular PB
connector and just flip a switch for either "SCSI" or "Dock" mode.
Less than $20 and very handy if you don't want to schlep a closet
full of cables and adapters around.

3] That said, I'm still not able to use the 1400 with a 2GB HD in
SCSI Disk Mode w/o errors so I got into networking using Ethernet.
Transfer of data is not nearly as fast as SDM plus it seems to take
forever for my 7500 to start up now. Also I'm learning a valuable
lesson about software licences as QuicKeys4 refuses to load on the
second machine to boot with the error message: "Duplicate serial
number." Geeze QuicKeys, I just want to have my portable set up like
my desk computer, and you expect me to buy another copy!? I don't
think so! Grumble, mumble, corporate greed, mumble, grumble

BTW sorry if my previous post of my culls of the "SCSI Disk Mode vs.
Large HDs" was a tad on the large side. I thought I pared it down to
just the essentials, retaining author info, etc. but when I saw it in
the digest it even struck me as a bit much.

Thanks for the details and yes, after further inspectionit is the
wrong cable (18"). I was initially just trying to link the two so I
could get a decent browser installed onto the 540c. Fortunately, I found
my Stuffit Deluxe and was finally able to open the downloads taken from
my 7300. As of this morning the 540c is running OS 8.1 using Netscape

off to find the right cable! I'd like to have all of my options covered!

Re: file sharing...now what?

2002-11-10 Thread Greg M
One thing I forgot to mention in my last post about SCSI disk mode...

One persons setup may not require termination on the end of the SCSI
chain while another setup might, even with the exact same computers.
This can be due to the length of the SCSI cable connecting the two (or
more) devices. Termination is for the purpose of putting an effective
load on the end of the chain. Otherwise the signal in the cable can
bounce from one end to the other and interfere with itself. But, if the
cable is short enough this may be little problem. Also if it's physical
length is a particular multiple/fraction of the wavelength of the
signal in the line then there may be no need for termination.

To put it another way, you may get by without terminating both ends of
a SCSI chain if cable lengths are just so, but it should always work to
terminate both ends. One problem that may seem to override this
statement comes when devices in the middle of the chain are unknowingly
terminated. In this case, impedances again become mismatched due to
termination in more places than just the two ends (source and load).

Also, it can work to terminate one end, and also somewhere in the
middle of the chain instead of the other end. But, this is only
possible because the cable lengths are arranged just right. Almost
impossible to calculate but trial and error my give workable results.

Re: file sharing...now what?

2002-11-10 Thread Greg M
Two things to consider:

The internal hard drive is not necessariy SCSI ID 0. They normally are
from the factory, but the only way to know for sure is to use some
utility to find out. Mt. Everything is the first one I go to but there
are many others.

The SCSI disk mode cable has to have 30 pins. If one of the corner pins
in the square connector is missing then it is NOT a SCSI disk mode
cable. But, just because the connector plug has 30 pins does not
guarantee that it is a SCSI disk mode cable. The 30th pin can be
present but not connected internally. This is something that is
possible, but I don't know if there have been any cables or adapters
actually manufactured with 30 pins, but have the one corner pin
disconnected.

Re: file sharing...now what?

2002-11-10 Thread Donna Hood Pointer
I'm positive that I did not use a terminator when I used my 520 in SCSI disk
mode. I just used the proper cable. I have a suspicion that you have the
regular SCSI device cable and not the one needed for SCSI disk mode. One has
29 pins and the other has 30 pins, but I don't remember which is which. At
the time I was using system 7.5, but I can't believe that makes any
difference. You have to tell it what scsi number to use for itself when the
PB is the SCSI device though. then you just plug it in with the cable

Here's what the manual says:
1. Choose Control Panels
2. Open the PB Setup control panel
3. In the SCSI disk mode ID sention of the CP, click the ID number you want
to assign
[My comment: OBVIOUSLY, this number cannot be zero (which is the internal
drive) or a number used by any other SCSI device}
4. Close the PB setup CP
TURN OFF the powerbook by choosing Shut Down from the Special menu
6. Shut down the computer you are connecting to, and turn off other devices
in the SCSI chain.
7. Connect the PB to the other computer or, if there are already devices
attached, to the END OF THE SCSI CHAIN. Warning: Always shut down the PB
before connecting of disconnecting the SCSI adapter cable.
8. Turn on the PB by pressing the power button. After a few seconds a SCSI
icon appears on the screen [of the PB} showing the ID number your assigned
in step 3. Warning: If you do not see the SCSI icon, and the computer either
starts normally or displays an error message, choose Shut Down (if you can)
and then immediately disconnect your computer from the SCSI chain. If you
can't choose Shut Down, try pressing the power button. If you cannot shut
down your PB, you should disconnect the cable anyway, or you may lose
information. then go back and repeat steps 6 through 8.
9. turn on the other SCSI devices in the chain, if any.
10. turn on the other computer. the PB appears as a hard disk icon on the
screen of the computer you connected it to. You can now transfer and use
files as if the PB were an external disk drive.

My comment: YOU MUST HAVE THE PROPER CABLE. It is called the Apple HDI-30
SCSI Disk Adapter.

Re: file sharing...now what?

2002-11-09 Thread Fran Dollinger
Here's the link to the Manual I was using:

http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/powerbooks/0304451APB520540CGS.PDF

Line 6 & 7 talk about the other SCSI devices and the termination.

I have nothing, other than the keyboard & monitor attached to the 7300
and nothing attached to the 540c.

Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Fran

I believe that the "SCSI Disk Mode" section in User Guides for such PowerBooks state
that the PowerBook should be placed at the END of the SCSI chain, and that all other
SCSI devices between the two computers should be turned ON.

Do you have the right cable? You need the "dark colored" SCSI Disk Mode
cable, not the usual grey one.

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

My understanding is that almost all CD burning via SCSI must be done with
a Mac that has SCSI Manager 4.3. Our 540s are not SCSI Manager 4.3
compliant so I've never even tried it. On the other hand, I'd love to be

Re: 190cs/6320 saga (was Re: File Sharing....)

2002-11-04 Thread Dan K
I second the motion, use filesharing to install from a mounted CD from
the 6320. Even if you can locate an unused set of 8.1 floppies, at this
point you'd stand a very good chance of getting at least one dud in the
lot. Those floppies aren't exactly archival quality media, and it's been
a long time since they were produced.

You've tried?:
. . . replacing the filesharing bits on the 8.1 Mac with the
filesharing items the 9.1 Mac?
. . . deleting/replacing the invisible "AppleShare PDS" files on the
8.1 Mac's volume(s)?
Corrupted AS PDS files can cause the problem you
describe.

Also, delete any filesharing prefs. Easiest way to replace/delete
troublesome preferences is to drag the Prefs folder to the desktop, then
restart. A new Prefs folder will be created by the system and will fill
with new prefs for everything that gets used, including filesharing
stuff. Once you get it working, make a BU copy of the old and new Prefs
folders, then drag (all or some of) the contents of the 'new' folder into
the 'old' prefs folder, replacing all the same-named items. Then drop the
'old' Prefs folder (now with a bunch of new prefs) back into the System
folder to replace the 'new' Prefs Ÿ.

BTW, I'd be pleased to extract the filesharing components from the CD's
8.1 installer tome and put them up somewhere for your DL convenience,
just say the word. (Listnannies: I'll not publish the address here, and
the fellow obviously has the right to the files, just hasn't a complete
set of media - DK {am I paranoid or what?})

Hi quick question on the super easy scsi disk mode what about bus errors
when you try to start the powerbook and if i am the only mac user getting
them where am i going wrong.

an even easier way is to get a hdd adapter to convert the 2.5 hdd to 3.5 hdd
they are about 5 $ on ebay and the whole install is twice as quick .

With an adapter cable you can use a SCSI CDRW -- the SCSI ports on PB's are
much smaller than the usual kind and shaped entirely differently, hence the
need for adaptation. Some cables have a switch which permits hooking up the
laptop to a desk Mac in SCSI disk mode as well.  $20 or thereabouts on eBay;
the single purpose cables run $5-$8 less.

190cs/6320 saga (was Re: File Sharing....)

2002-11-04 Thread Andrew Kershaw
James,

If you can browse the 6320's drive on your 190cs, you can also use
your 190cs to view CDs mounted in the 6320 via AppleTalk. (Er, your
6320 does have a CD-ROM drive, doesn't it?)

Long and short - You don't have to find 8.1 on floppies. Get the CD,
stick it in your 6320, share it with your 190cs, and install 8.1 over
AppleTalk onto the 190cs. Easy-peasy. Heck, I've done that w/ 8.5 on
my 5300. It took a few hours, but it worked.

Dog slow, but it will work and save you the headache of 1st tracking
down 8.1 floppies, then 2nd installing 8.1 via floppy (that's gotta be
a nightmare!).

Alternatively, get the PowerBook SCSI adapter, hook your book up in
SCSI disk mode, and install 8.1 via the 6320. That would be super
easy, and the adapter's on eBay all the time. And if you ask nicely,
I'll bet someone on LEM-swap will give you a deal.

So unless you have another reason for wanting the floppies, my advice
would be to give up on that avenue. There are easier, faster methods.

Peace,
Drew

My sympathies, Fran:

I've long had a related problem trying to file share between
my OS 8.1 PB 190cs (which came on an incomplete set of floppies when
I inherited it) and my OS 9.1 6320. What's maddening is I'm actually
able to file share from my PB 190 TO my 6320 but not visa versa. In
other words, I get my 6320's icons appearing and functional on my PB
190's screen but all I get on my 6320's Chooser when I stroke it up
is "This Server IS Not Ready. Try Again." Though I should count my
blessings being able to file share at all for 6320 Synk back-up
purposes since my dog of a Orb Drive died, I'd like the assurance of
a two-way file share hook-up via printer port (even though it's slow
as molasses in January).
I suspect that something minor and arcane is missing in my OS
8.1 set-up which was long lost with the original set of OS 8.1
floppies. That's why I'm looking high and lower for a dealer who
handles a _Complete_ set of OS 8.1 floppies.

Good Luck! I know the headaches!

Yeah, it's just called sharing... in the OS 8.1 menu. Went there did
that and still the HD was a no show in the Chooser. But I think you may
have something about Appletalk and the Printer using the same
port..I'll check that out tomorrow. Also, someone mentioned the
PRAM being bad could cause a problem.
Thanks for the help!!

Have you turned on "used jointly" (or something like that; it is
called "Gemeinschaftlich nutzen" in the German localized system; it
is the second item of "Get info") for your hard disk in question?
Otherwise it will not show up in the Chooser. Another point to
consider: you have to make sure that AppleTalk and the printer do not
