You effectively have to print to an LPT port, captured to the shared
printer. Printing to UNC paths is flaky, and trying to print directly to
an IP address won't work.

Well, 32-bit Vista still has the 16-bit subsystem so in theory it should
work, despite what you may read on the web, see here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905017.aspx). To quote:

"Will my MS-DOS applications continue to run under Windows Vista without
modification?

Yes, they will. "

That would apply to Win16 apps like FoxPro For Windows as well.

I don't know if HP have done something rights-wise to disallow access
 to AUTOEXEC.NT.

16-bit stuff will not work on *any* 64-bit Windows, be it XP or Vista or
whatever.

Problem accessing Access 2K table from VFP9SP1

2007-02-07 Thread MB Software Solutions
(This is probably an easy one for most of you...I hope!)

I'm trying to simply read data from Access tables. I verify that i
establish a connection to the MDB, yet the SQLEXEC fails, and when I
look at AERROR() it seems to be looking for the MDB file in the current
directory rather than what's specified in the connection string.

Here's my code:
i = SQLSTRINGCONNECT("Driver={Microsoft Access Driver
(*.mdb)};Dbq=C:\downloads\timeclock\data\arx_active.mdb;Uid=Admin;Pwd=;")
WAIT WINDOW i
WAIT WINDOW SQLEXEC(i,"select Firstname,MI,Lastname from
arx_active.Employees")

What am I doing wrong? Thx...

Michael: I don't see anything wrong, but when I have used ODBC with Access
tables I remember some slight differences in the SELECT syntax. I would
look to see if the syntax of your SELECT works in Access. Someone can
correct me if I'm wrong, but the SELECT statement should be an Access
statement and not necessarily a VFP statement. There are some differences.

At least that's my recollection of when I did an application that worked
with Access tables.

I'm trying to go with a DSNless connection so that SQLSTRINGCONNECT can
be all that I need and no configuring anything special on the client PC.

I did a "CD C:\downloads\timeclock\data" prior to my SQLEXEC above and
it works great then.but why should I have to change directory to
that folder? Weird. I guess I can work around this if I must. It's
just kinda silly/kludgey, imo.

Hi John

Haven't had chance to look at 9 yet. My libraries are tried and tested on v8
so need to get some spare time to check with 9.

btw the scenario I have is exactly as you say, a parameters table holding
the next available number. Will look at autoincs thanks.

I've put the flush code out there today so will see if this fixes the
problem, like you say it is highly intermittent (twice in a year!) Will also
post back in a little while when I've got some feedback.

How are you generating the invoice numbers - from a table holding the next
number? I had a problem like this generating primary keys using a next
number table on a couple of apps. It be-devilled us for years, I couldn't
find what was causing it as it seemed to be intermittent - it only went away
when I upgraded and started using auto incrementing fields.

Why upgrade to VFP 8, why not VFP 9?

simple format e.g.
nHndl = SQLSTRINGCONNECT("Driver={Microsoft Access Driver

What is the 'source' and 'destination'? I'm assuming one is MSSQL, but
what's the other? You say 'hard/software combo', so I'm wondering if
you might be interfacing with hardware? Or are you referring simply to

Graham,
On the Index table how are you locking the parameter (Next record Id) table?
99% of the time VFP will do this automatically for you but I prefer the
Rlock()/Flock() manual method, that way I can be SURE of getting no
duplicates. This is the ONLY time I ever use manual locking however.

I had a bit of a problem a couple of years ago with the same scenario
but we had two systems accessing the parameter table. The first was our
old FPD 2.6 system and the other our newer VFP7 system. It appeared
that VFP was cacheing the table and could not tell that the old system
had updated it, even though we were using RLOCK() then unlock etc. What
I had to do to make it work was get VFP to close the table after it had
got the number. It gave me a right headache with duplicate barcode
numbers. :-(

I'd amplify your statement a little: You MUST lock a record to ensure
that VFP is reading the most current value from a table. In PK
generation, this is essential and mandatory. In other places in the
application, that's what conflict detection is for.

Error #1234 convertvfplogicaltosqlserverbut(0) subscript is outside
defined range. The table is fairly simple with 3 fields. One integer
field, and two char fields

The indexes are all regular indexes.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be. I have upsized
other tables from this database without any problem.

Thanks

Hi
The code is just use optimistic ie tableupdate(.t.)

The params table is one record so will stick a rlock in for good measure as
well.

I'd amplify your statement a little: You MUST lock a record to ensure
that VFP is reading the most current value from a table. In PK
generation, this is essential and mandatory. In other places in the
application, that's what conflict detection is for.

Graham,
In a lighter vein, my mother always used to say on the question to flush or
not to flush:

"If its yellow...let it mellow but if it's brown...then FLUSH it down!!"

It gave me a right headache with duplicate barcode
numbers. :-(

[OT] Global Warming Studies Demand More Computer Power

2007-02-07 Thread Leland F. Jackson, CPA
Computers are being used to help better understand the causes and
effects of Global Warming, and the role that human interferance with the
planets envrionmental system causes or contributes to global warming.

#

*Global Warming Studies Demand More Compute Power*

With the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
4th Assessment Report, even skeptics are
acknowledging that global warming is heating up.

According to the 4th Assessment Report
, we
can expect rising oceans, warmer oceans, sea ice reduction, warmer
winters, and the like, all thanks to human-derived greenhouse gases that
are playing havoc with our climate. The 2007 report will be presented in
four phases during the year, with the first phase focusing on physical
evidence of global change

"We are now seeing, not merely predicting, effects of greenhouse warming
on a scale and in ways that were not observable before," said Gabriele
Hegerl, associate research professor at Duke University's Nicholas
School of the Environment and Earth Sciences
, who also co-authored a summary of the
report for policymakers. Hegerl, a coordinating lead author of the IPCC
report's chapter on "Understanding and Attributing Climate Change," goes
on to say that "We've studied improved observations from land, sea and
space, as well as better temperature reconstructions covering the last
1,000 years. Understanding the observations is really what this all is
about. For instance, looking at the patterns of change in 20th-century
temperatures, we can now distinguish between changes caused by
greenhouse gases, man-made aerosols, variability in solar radiation and
major volcanic eruptions."

As you might expect all of this obervation and modeling requires
computing power -- and lots of it. To that end, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has activated
its newest weather and climate supercomputers, increasing the
computational might used for climate and weather forecasts by 320
percent. The IBM machines process 14 trillion calculations per second at
maximum performance and ingest more than 240 million global observations
daily. These computers also will process data from Constellation
Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate
(COSMIC) satellites, a series of six
satellites launched in 2006.

"Better physics, better models, better data, and faster and more
powerful supercomputing are the foundation for making better weather and
climate forecasts," said Conrad C. Lautenbacher, undersecretary of
commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator."

"One of the most fascinating things is that we see that changes have
already happened or are happening now in more climate variables than
just temperature," says Hegerl. "For instance, there have been observed
changes in ocean temperatures, global rainfall and in circulation of the
atmosphere. We now are beginning to understand that these changes occur
at least partly in response to anthropogenic influences on climate. This
allows us to better evaluate model simulations, which do simulate
aspects of these changes, although not as successfully as they simulate
changes in temperature."

Of course using computers adds to CO2 emmissions.
They should do the calculations by hand to save the

Re: [OT] Global Warming Studies Demand More Computer Power

2007-02-07 Thread Michael Madigan
Well some people say we shouldn't have killed so many
Iraqis even though the net lives we saved are in the
hundreds of thousands compared to how many would have
died under Saddam.

So, it stands to reason we shouldn't be using computer
modeling to save the Earth because such computer
modeling damages the Earth.

Understand now?

Absolutely. When you see your psychiatrist to check out your judgment,
also have him check out your reasoning. Your believe that the original
war with Iraq, and subsequent civil struggle for power between waring
secretarian tribal fashion over the vacuum left when Saddam was removed
as leader of Iraq, which the Bush Administration now calls "the war", or
the violence in response to the effort of the US to impose it will on
the Iraqi people through military force, which the Bush Administration
also calls "the war", resulted in a net saving of life is preposterous
and indefeasible.

When the time comes that an evaluation can be performed to accurately
measure the cost of the Iraq war in terms of loss of human life, loss of
limb, loss of hope, loss of financial resources, loss of property, loss
of a generation or two of mentally healthy Iraqi citizens, it will be
staggering. The cost due to psychological damage/harm to the Iraqi
people, and all the children, will manifest itself for generations to come.

My position is absolutely defeasible.

UN says 150,000 Iraqis have died since 2003

Estimates that Saddam was torturing and killing
100,000 to 500,000 Iraqis a year.

Net saved lives a minimum of 250,000 Iraquis.

Re: [OT] Global Warming Studies Demand More Computer Power

2007-02-07 Thread Leland F. Jackson, CPA
Your numbers are based on feeble projection; forecast as to what might
have happen if Iraq had been left undistributed. As any statistician
can tell you, projection, or forecast, are notoriously unreliable.
Also, the further you try to forecast into the future, the greater
become the uncertainty of the results.

Your numbers come from projections over a four year period which you try
to measure what what might have happen should Saddam been left in
power. Further, you projections are easily manipulated toward your
biases, both conscience and subconscience, and I doubt you could even
tell me the underlying assumption and statistical method used to compute
your projected number of deaths.

My figures will come from recorded history as to what really happen, how
many people really died, their names, ages, occupations, etc, what the
psychological ramification of this unnecessary war will be to both
America and Iraq, the real financial cost to Iraq, America, and the rest
of the world because of the unnecessary war with Iraq, which has become
an American fiasco and made joke our of America to the rest of the world.

That, in a nutshell, is why I've been moving my web sites out of FrontPage
and into Dreamweaver. But it isn't exactly a simple move if the site is a
large one. FrontPage does not do things in a 'standard' way, any more than
the rest of what Microsoft has put out over the years.

Or how some people read the whole part of something,
 entirely out of
 context.

The purpose of the 'well-regulated militia' was to
 protect the people
from an oppressive government, and was not intended
 to establish a
particular "well-regulated militia", as some seem
 curiously to argue.
Rather, by making the right to keep and bear arms
 universal to all
citizens in the Bill of Rights, and not just to some
 special
"militia" class, this formulation allowed for the
 people to self-
organize into "well-regulated" militia as needed to
 defend themselves
from tyranny. In general, our founders were into
 "self-
 regulation" (particularly of the small-r
 "republican" variety), not
 nanny government.

The enhancements to the federal power and
 consolidation under a
single federal government under the Constitution was
 an economic
necessity. Nevertheless, the founders still saw fit
 to guarantee each
state in the union a "republican" form of
 government, and each
citizen a right to keep and bear arms. They hardly
 envisioned the
federal government confiscating guns from everyone
 except the police
or army. Maybe one or two of them thought that was a
 good idea (after
all, they did discuss the various alternatives, and
 even my hero
Hamilton had a brain fart about re-establishing
 monarchy), but the
consensus was to state explicitly a right to keep an
 bear arms to
all, and the reason sited was not just so the
 government could
regulate some once and future national guard or
 whatever, but rather
because an oppressive government could only be
 countered by a people
 armed to defend themselves.

Context Ed is just as important as the precise
 wording of a phrase.

Re: [NF] OS Recalls, was: The Ultimate Vista Upgrade

2007-02-07 Thread Chet Gardiner
Adam Smith on "the invisible hand":

But there are many misconceptions about the invisible hand, starting
with the belief that Smith himself was a absolute believer in it. In
fact, he was not. Smith actually viewed merchants with great suspicion:

/"People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and
diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public,
or in some contrivance to raise prices."

/Another misconception is that the invisible hand is a form of
individualism. It would be hard to call the actions of a baker who
spends all day baking bread for strangers "individualism." A more
accurate word is /exchange,/ and it represents a balance between
individualism and collectivism, even if that exchange is ultimately
self-interested. True individualism is taking from the group without
giving anything back; true collectivism is giving to the group without
getting anything back. Seen in this light, the exchange inherent in the
invisible hand should deserve the full and enthusiastic endorsement of
liberals.

Unfortunately, today's conservatives have corrupted the meaning of
Smith's term. They use it to suggest that the pursuit of self-interest
in the economy will always (or almost always) result in group benefit,
and that individuals should feel free to pursue it.

If it's that re-creatable, then it's time to start adding trace code,
IMO-- to find where the problem is happening. I use STRTOFILE for
this:

STRTOFILE("Some meaningful string" + CHR(13) + CHR(10), "c:\out.log", .T.)

This will append a line to the c:\out.log file-- change your strings
to something useful to know where in the code it's happening(put it in
key spots right before something you suspect to be the potential
problem-- it can be very high level in the code, especially at first).

You can also write a more robust tracing mechanism, which I plan to do
for my next projects. Basically, you call the function throughout your
code, and the function queries a setting to see if tracing is 'on',
and potentially at what level, and if so outputs it to the text file
with a date/time stamp, etc. I've used it in C++ programs as a
debugging mechanism and it's been extremely valuable. I turn it on
with a registry setting. One of the key things I like to do is add
start:functionname() and end:functionname() things to the beginning
and ending of functions/methods when I write my code initially-- this
lets me know very early on what overall function/method the crash is
occuring in...
