2007-10-09 Thread Tristan Leask
Hi guys,

Well, it turns out that I am off to pastures new soon and at the new
place I will be playing with Delphi/C#/C++/Java (In that order).

Over the 7 years that I have been using Foxpro I must say it has been a
joy to learn and use. Hopefully I won't let my knowledge of it slip and
that I will still be able to play with it from time to time.

Also I would like to say many a thanks to Ed for hosting this mailing
list and to all you lot for putting up with the odd stupid question from
me. I will miss you all, especially Chet raving about how much he loves
Windows XP ;-) That always bought a smile to my face! lol

In the words of a lazy Arnie, I may be back.

Thanks to you all

Tristan

Cheers Guys,

Heh, yeah I will suggest some VFP if it fits in with any of the
requirements. Probably not much of a place for it though as I am going
to be dealing with software that bolts onto to Cisco VOIP solutions.

The c++ stuff I will not be touching much of for a while. I have done
c++ in my uni days so it will just be some fun thats for sure.

It's a big change for me, and it is going to be tough, but I am going
grab hold of this and give it a right good kick in!

Looking at what you'll be working with, have you done much of it

Estonian Numeric Keypad

2007-09-27 Thread Tristan Leask
Hi guys,

Long time no chat, I hope everyone is well!

We have an Estonian customer who has asked us if we could make entering
numbers into our system easier. Now apparently on an Estonian keypad,
the period key ('.' also del) is actually a comma key (','). This is
because they write numbers in the following format 100,00 (this
would be 100.00 in the UK). At the moment, I when they enter a
number into the system, they have to use the period key on the main part
of the keyboard (also ''), this thus makes it an annoyance when
entering a number.

I think this might be because the input mask is something like
.99 on some of the controls.

If I adjusted the input mask for this customer to 999,99 would
this effect the results of some of the calculations? Are there some SET
commands I should be looking at for this regionalisation?

Thanks all

IIRC you can do this with some API calls, but it is quiet difficult.
Your best bet is to check out news2news and look in the printer section.

Hi all:

I'm looking to find a snippet (or two) of code that would allow me
to
update the settings of a printer from within Windows. I need to be able
to
do this without the user needing to take any intervention to enable the
new
settings.

I seem to remember doing this a while back but I can't find the code
that I'd written to do this (and yes, I feel quite foolish about not
being
able to find my code). The main thing I need to be able to alter is the
paper size for the current printer, but being able to adjust other
things --
such as duplexing mode, copy count, etc. -- would be nice as well.

If anyone can point me to this type of code, I'd greatly appreciate
it!

Thanks,

Jon

Also the use alternative use of , and . is pretty common although we

I just wanted you all to know that I missed interacting with you on a

today, I might resubscribe to ProFox.

The reason I unsubscribed was because I was addicted to checking my

there you go.

Now, I know Python real well but I'm rusty with VFP and I have a VFP app

to maintain, so there you go, here I am.

I think open source is the way of the future, but I still appreciate
some proprietary software: some of the Adobe products, some games, and
the top of the list is of course FoxPro.

[NF] Linux help

2007-08-03 Thread Tristan Leask
Hi Guys,

I have just got a Trixbox up and running and all is well. This is
really the first time I have properly played with something Linux.
Anyway, I am trying to install some APC software onto the box so that it
talks to our UPS that it is connected to however I am having some
problems installing.

After putting the CD into the drive you are supposed to run...

/mnt/cdrom/Linux/pbe_agent_linux_jvm.bin

However it says no such file or directory, so I cd'd to the cdrom and
ls'd, and no files where showing up.

No matter, so I used a windows PC to copy the files onto the linux box.
I dropped the files into the root user directory /root (I am logged in
as root). So now I then went to run the install using...

/root/pbe_agent_linux_jvm.bin

This gave me the following error...

-bash: /root/pbe_agent_linux_jvm.bin: Permission denied

I am stuck as to how to install this package. Here are the actual
instructions to install the file...

Any ideas?

Thanks

Select statement with a max() of 2 values

2007-06-20 Thread Tristan Leask
Afternoon all,

I have got a strange one here. I have written a SELECT statement which
is something similar to

SELECT f1, f2, max(f5,f6) as test FROM t1..

This looks ok to me, however when I try to run it, foxpro doesn't like
the fact that I am using the MAX() function. Apparently when MAX() is
used in a SELECT statement it wants to calculate the maximum of the
specified column. Thus can you not use MAX() to calculate the maximum
of some fields in a row, E.g. MAX(f1, f2, f3, f4)?

Thanks

MAX() is one of the few times there's a name collision between a
native VFP command and the SQL language. Ed's suggestiion of a UDF
will work. You could also include an inline IIF(f5f6, f5, f6) to get
a similar effect.

You're not the first to find this. I suspect it might be in the Hacker's
Guide.

I managed to get around this in the end by using the Valid event and
returning 0 all the time when the user tries to leave the control and

interactive change event not firing on the listbox because I stopped the
listbox from getting the focus until the user had either saved or
cancelled the changes.

RE: Valid event screwing with click event?

I'm still having issues with this. Below is some example code where you
can modify the text in a list using the edit box. When you leave the
edit box focus, it asks you if you want to update the text. However
after it has updated the text, if the user has select another entry in
the list it should then fire the interactivechange event and update the
text to the newly selected entry.

The interactivechange event doesn't fire though.

Any ideas?

Thanks

RE: Valid event screwing with click event?

2007-06-05 Thread Tristan Leask
Hmm, another reason to upgrade! lol

Not being able to test that, wouldn't that just refresh the list box and
not actually fire the interactive change event?

In theory, shouldn't the interactive event fire after the valid event
has finished returning a .T.? Thus...

1) User modifies the edit box.
2) User then clicks on another entry in the list box.
3) Valid event fires asking user if they want to save the changes.
4) User clicks Yes, record is updated.
5) Interactive event then fires.
6) Interactive event uses the newly selected record and loads the text.

Where as this is what actually happens...

1) User modifies the edit box.
2) User then clicks on another entry in the list box.
3) Valid event fires asking user if they want to save the changes.
4) User clicks Yes, record is updated.
5) The selected option changes to the one selected (after the valid
event has fired).
6) Interactive event does not fire, thus the text for the newly selected
entry does not get loaded into the edit box.

I hope this makes sense. bg

Cheers

to do with the value change (selection change) in the list box after the

change (selection change).

Oh er, the joys of event sequences!

RE: Valid event screwing with click event?

2007-06-05 Thread Tristan Leask
Sorry, I don't think I have explained this at all well.

The interactive event of the LIST box is not firing after the valid
event. In theory it should because you are interactively changing the
value of the LIST box when you click on it (This fires the Valid event
of the edit box).

Ok, so in summary... (lol)

The user selects a new entry in the LISTBOX, this fires the valid event
in the EDITBOX and asks the user if they want to update the list. If
they say yes or no, then the code allows them to leave the EDITBOX into
the LISTBOX which is when the interactivechange event of the LISTBOX
should fire because the value has now changed (which it doesn't).

The valid event fires before the control looses focus, correct?

Thanks

Tristan

Maybe I'm missing something but once you get to the Valid, haven't you
effectively left the object? (Assuming that the valid returns .t., of
course) Why would you expect the interactivechange to fire again?

Turning on event tracking can be quite helpful when you're trying to
determine the sequence behavior.

Valid event screwing with click event?

2007-05-04 Thread Tristan Leask
HI GUYS

URGENT! NEED HELP NO WASTERS HERE I HAVE FORM

Joke BG

Anyway on with the actual question. I have a form with a list and an
edit control on it. On the edit control, I have some code in the valid
event. This all works okay. On the list I have some code in the click
event. This too works ok. However, if I click in the edit box and then
click onto the list control, the code in the valid event fires, but then
this stops the code in the click event from firing.

I have tried it with the InteractiveChange event, and the same problem
happens.

Has anyone ever encountered this before?

VFP reaction to an API POSTMESSAGE()

2007-04-19 Thread Tristan Leask
Hi Gang

Okay I have a question regarding what happens when a postmessage() is
fired at a VFP program.

I assume that if you fired the following code off, the MyVFPApp (a plain
old app with 1 form as its main window) would trigger its Release()
event? Correct? Or would the program just quit?

#DEFINE WM_QUIT 18
DECLARE INTEGER PostMessage IN user32 ;
INTEGER hWindow, INTEGER Msg, STRING @wParam, INTEGER lParam
hWindow = FindWindow(Null, MyVFPApp)
IF hWindow 0
= PostMessage(hWindow, WM_QUIT, 0,0)
ENDIF

Does VFP process PostMessage()'s internally or can they be tapped into?

cheers

RE: Another life after VFP thread?

2007-04-13 Thread Tristan Leask

Well I don't believe the below statement from MS if the issues I am
having with older MS products and Vista are to go by...

http://tinyurl.com/2uepmn

Basically Outlook XP is not broken in a way that it doesn't run anymore,
but it is broken in a way that is to annoy the user something rotten.
It isn't going to get fixed because the product is out of main stream
support.

Next OS comes, and VFP has some really bad issues. It still runs but
there are many problems. MS then says, That is a known compatibility
issue between VFP and Windows SonOfVista that won't be fixed as VFP is
out of mainstream support.

Cheers MS!

Also including reply to your earlier...

Vista support ends 2017. There will be other operating system versions
and patches. Plans and details of those OSes is not known.

I want to emphasize again, that there is no 'switch' that says this app
will not work anymore. There are DOS apps that still work 15 years after
DOS stopped being supported. 10 years ago we shipped VFP5.

Your question is, will VFP9 work on an OS that will be released 10 years
into the future. That is really an impossible question to answer.

I have just tried it again and this time I right click on the taskbar

Quick revival and then death for this thread.

Ed, if say a company was to use Dabo (python) as its language of choice,
how would you go about distributing your program? Do you compile to an
exe, or is it some protected code library that is then run by a python
launcher?

It depends on the type of application. If it were an app similar
to
what you would build with VFP, then you would use a packaging utility
such as py2exe on Windows, py2app on OS X, or PyInstaller for Linux
(although this one is supposed to wrap all platforms - haven't tried it.

They seem confusing as hell, until one time you try to change
something, and it does what you expect! After that, it's clear
sailing.

Damn right. I managed to coble something together but still there
wasn't something right as far as I was concerned. After reading the
Wiki, I understand the importance of them with getting the forms right
when moving across platforms. I think I need to watch some of the
screen casts again.

No, and I don't really have plans to create one. Are there any
particular aspects going from one to another that you think might be
 helpful?

Some things might be useful such as thing like MESSAGEBOX(), INPUTBOX()
and the like but I suspect a lot of it would be impossible to do like in
the VB one. When I drifted back into VB after using VFP for years I
couldn't remember all the commands so it came in very handy as a quick
reference booklet.

SQL query

2007-03-26 Thread Tristan Leask
Hi Guys,

It's a Monday morning and my brain isn't working properly (surprise,
surprise!)

Anyway, I have 3 tables that I want to join together.

Table 1 has 1 record =

Table1 My data

Table 2 has 1 record =

Table2 My data

Table 3 has 2 records =

Table3 My data record 1
Table3 My data record 2

The output I want to get is to have 2 records of data that looks like
the following...

Table1 My data, Table2 My data, Table3 My data record 1
Table1 My data, .NULL., Table3 My data record 2

Is this even possible with one SQL statement? Or would it just be
easier to split it into two?

SELECT table1.f1, table2.f1, table3.f1 FROM table1 INNER JOIN table2
INNER JOIN table3 ON join ON join WHERE statement INTO CURSOR
myCursor

Comes back with...

Table1 My data, Table2 My data, Table3 My data record 1
Table1 My data, Table2 My data, Table3 My data record 2

Ergh, I hate Monday mornings.

Another life after VFP thread?

2007-03-23 Thread Tristan Leask

Well it's a Friday morning and the guys in the office are chatting about
life after VFP. I was wondering what languages people are considering
to EXPAND to as part of their dev work?

So far I have seen the following crop up...

1) VFP 9 Sedna
People seem as though they are going to push it past the MS support
date. However there is no guarantee that VFP will continue to work on
OS's after MS start patching things and release new OS's.

2) MS .NET
Keep on the MS ship? Yes I know there are projects that may allow you
to run these programmes on Linux but do they work? And is there another
EULA waiting to happen?

3) Dabo (Python)
Ok, probably the best thing here maybe? Couple of fears though. The
first being that really if you are going to do this you must know how to
program in python (no brainer really) and understand how that works.
What happens if Paul and Ed mysteriously get run over by Steve Balmer?
Will the project continue or will it die?

4) REALBasic
Ok, I don't know much about this, but it seems to keep popping up over
and over again on these boards. Is this another VFP waiting to happen?
Are they likely to get brought up by the big boys, consumed and then not
supported in order to move people across to their .Nets?

What other serious contenders are people looking at to move to as their
main language of choice?

Cheers for now...

RE: Another life after VFP thread?

Well it just goes to show that people do actually pay attention to the
posts I make on this list! BG

I really want to be able to work with Python, but I just can't see how I
can get to the stage where I am now in VFP. I can't imagine how I have
come so far with VFP. It's like I have always known it.

The main concern is the development time of having to create forms. A
good GUI editor is very handy as then you don't have to spend age's
fannying around with lines of code trying to visualize the final layout.

Yeah, there is some cool stuff you can do from that site, like sticking
Windows Mobile 6 onto your phone, but I haven't tried any of those
cooked roms. I have given things like new Bluetooth radio stacks a go

Are you running the Runtime Engine, or an actual installation?

If it's the Runtime Engine, there is a new version I posted this

morning. Apparently there was a bug in py2exe, the program used to
package Python programs into Windows executables.

Absolute class! Thanks for the link John!

I hate Macs. I have always hated Macs. I hate people who use Macs. I
even hate people who don't use Macs but sometimes wish they did. Macs
are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for
scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers
for people who earnestly believe in feng shui.

That actually had me laughing and rolling around on the floor! Classic!

Updating a table for another table

2007-03-01 Thread Tristan Leask
Ok, it's Thursday and I am having issues with my brain.

I have one table (table a) which can get updated from another table of
the same structure (table b). Now there are records in table A that
have been changed in table B, so we want to update these records from
table B and import any new records.

Pretty simple... A scan with a scatter, seek, replace/append gather
will do this. The only thing is its ok, when just 1 person has table A
open, but if someone else has it open, it slows right down.

Am I being completely dumb and going about this the entirely wrong way?

Talk about brain failure.

Thanks

Wow, people decided they wanted Vista!

FW: Clearing the Word Clipboard

2007-02-20 Thread Tristan Leask

Siestse,

There are no controls in your first option and the second option doesn't work
either.

This is Word 2003. By some accounts Micro$oft took out the support for your
second option in the release of 2003.

Hi,
Depending to the amount of customization in the toolbars the following should
work:
ox.CommandBars(Clipboard).Controls(4).Execute

Where ox is a reference to any Office COM-reference like Word.Application or
Excel.Application

I would recommend not using such a hard reference but would search for the
correct button like this:

#DEFINE msoControlButton = 1
oy = ox.CommandBars.FindControl(msoControlButton, 3634) IF VARTYPE(oy) = O

but this is deprecated - the recommendation is to use the api directly.
Word is probably similar.

otoh you could try disabling the multiple clipboard in Word and then use
_cliptext in fox to manipulate the normal clipboard.

Clearing the Word Clipboard

2007-02-19 Thread Tristan Leask

I've searched the list and I cannot find a solution to a problem.

In foxpro I'm opening word document and manipulating them. Whilst doing
this I place various data on the clipboard but office has the Multiple
Clipboard and it gets full up to the point that my program stops
responding because word will throw up a messagebox asking me if I want
to allow the data in the clipboard to remain there once I have closed
word down.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to empty the clipboard, but
when I try that I cannot empty it!
I've tried the following code to no avail

Declare integer OpenClipboard in user32 integer hwnd declare integer
CloseClipboard in user32 declare integer emptyclipboard in user32
declare long FindWindowA in WIN32API string class, string table

hwd=FindWindowA(OpusApp,new.doc - Microsoft Word)
openclipboard(hwd)
emptyclipboard()
closeclipboard()

There is also no code in VBA to empty the clipboard that I can find for
office 2003 as microsoft kindly removed this facility.

Has anyone got any ideas???

Cheers

Tristan

Vista and Form Borders

2007-02-15 Thread Tristan Leask
Wehey!

Seen as we have had about twenty million Vista posts recently I thought
I would through another one in! lol

Anyway, has anyone noticed either of the two irregularities with borders
around forms?

1) With Aero turned on and with a form with a border style of 1 - Fixed
Single, sometimes the border just does not show at all. Instead you
get a completely invisible area where the form should be. You can still
drag the form by clicking in this invisible area.

2) Half height title bar on a form. If this is turned on and you still
have the control box shown in the top right corner of the form, it
doesn't register a click if you click on say the minimise button in the
top right hand corner of it. If I click in the bottom left hand corner,
a new minimise button is drawn as depressed but not aligned to where it
should be.

I am running Vista Business evaluation on a Toshiba Satellite Pro.

Any Comments?

Thanks all

Well I have got around the first issue without having to turn off aero
all the time. In the shortcut properties for running the programme, on
the compatibility tab there is an option to disable visual effects.
Ticking this on, sorts out the invisible borders of forms running in the
programme!

Solution! Yey!

I found the answer by starting from the bottom up on the videos. IIRC
the second from last video had the company in it and there was a chapter
link to them. I was basically checking all the chapter titles in the
videos that were referring to Vista. That was the only company name
that I could find in any of them.

Opps, forgot this...

Remember that from 5.30 p.m. today we are making available 1,000 copies
of Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system in return for
correctly answering a simple question, the answer to which is contained
within the presentations throughout the day (the first 1,000 valid
entries with the correct answer will be eligible, terms and conditions
apply).

Have they finally got it working for Wifi connections using WPA?
That was my main gripe about the last couple of versions. Wifi WPA

You can al try Ubuntu now even if you don't have a distribution PC. The
latest Ubuntu Project Install.exe allows you to install Ubuntu on the
fly
assuming you have a broadband link with minimal intervention.
