I don't think it's useful to add unreleased book infos to the website.

Having the infos available once the book is available sounds like
a good thing, though.

The table is sorted ascending by date, so having passed entries
in the table causes outdated entries to stay at the top.

I think it's fine to clear out outdated entries. Alternatively,
these could be moved to a new table at the bottom of the page.

Re: [pydotorg-www] pythonprogramminglanguage.com

2016-09-03 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Peter,

please see the discussion on pydotorg-www for why we took action
and how...

https://mail.python.org/pipermail/pydotorg-www/2016-August/003835.html

I noticed that the book links are now removed from both
http://pythonprogramminglanguage.com/ and
https://pythonspot.com/

They both used the same Amazon affiliate code, they are both using
Wordpress, Cloudflare, the HTML looks very similar, the same
cookie script is used, etc., so either one or the other site is
a rip-off or both are managed by the same person.

Thanks,

Re: [pydotorg-www] (no subject)

2016-08-29 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Ok, here's what I did:

1. disabled pythonspot as well
2. added note that we don't want spammers to fill the listings
   on that page
3. moved the entries of both pythonspot and pythonguru to the
end of the list (reinstantiated the pythonguru listing which
pythonspot had removed); removed duplicate pythonspot entries
and only kept the pythonspot.com one around

If one of the two want to make edits, they can ask for change
requests on this list, but I don't think we should give them
editor rights again for the time being - at least not until we
get the feeling that they have learned the lesson.

Interesting, the sites are different, but at least
https://pythonspot.com/ and http://pythonprogramminglanguage.com/
use the same Amazon affiliate code.

Chris and others: What should we do about this ? Remove them as
well ?

All sites are anonymous, they all use affiliate links to

Sure, we have a few pages where companies and freelancers can
list their offerings. I was just wondering where you wanted
to add them, since we sometimes get requests where people are
trying to spam the wiki in various ways and your request was
not specific enough.

So could you please let us know where you intend to make
edits ?

Thanks.

Hi Annapoornima and all new board members,

for the PSF wiki, you will need to create an account:

and then ask e.g. Ewa to add you to the board group:

https://wiki.python.org/psf/BoardGroup

Then you should go through the welcome page for additional advice
on the various resources:

Just to clarify: the wiki accounts are separate from the
python.org website accounts.

Even the wiki themselves use different accounts, i.e.
the general Python wiki accounts and the PSF wiki accounts

The wiki sometimes gets very slow when it comes to applying
modifications. This is most likely due to the huge number
of registered users.

Since it is running behind a load balancer, the load balancer
then times out and gives you the 503.

I've now restarted Apache on the VM. Please check whether things
get better now.

The above page was what we (the PSF) used before the bylaws changes
that opened up the PSF for everyone and allowed self certification
as contributing or managing member.

When we introduced the new bylaws, all the existing PSF members
became fellows and so that's the membership class listed on
the above page.

I guess we could list the new contributing / managing members
as well, perhaps on a separate page which gets auto-generated
in some way. The problem here is that these are self-certified
and, AFAIK, we still use the (temporary) process that we put
in place in for this:

http://pyfound.blogspot.de/2015/02/enroll-as-psf-voting-member.html

The python.org system does have a flag for setting those
membership classes as well, however, I'm not sure whether
this is exposed to the users somewhere or whether it's
only used internally by Betsy and Ewa to track the membership
classes.

Finally, listing all basic members is not possible, since we
have more then 4000 :-)

The membership is listed on the profile pages, e.g.

https://www.python.org/users/malemburg/

If you look at the editing history of the page, both "pythonguru" and
"pythonspot" are literally fighting over the top listing on that page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers?action=info

I believe both deserve a cooling off period and the listing should
be reordered alphabetically as it was some time ago:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers?action=recall=110

(perhaps also documenting this policy at the top of the page)

The Python package index development has moved here:

https://github.com/pypa

with warehouse being the next gen version of PyPI, currently under
development. Also see https://wiki.python.org/moin/CheeseShopDev

The existing version is hosted here:

https://bitbucket.org/pypa/pypi/overview

The SF links should probably be removed from pypi.python.org.
Perhaps you could file a bug report on the bitbucket tracker:

https://bitbucket.org/pypa/pypi/issues

Hope that helps,

Re: [pydotorg-www] [python-events] Event info

2016-01-14 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Marilyn,

thanks for sorting the table.

Since the calendar on the PythonEvents page was only showing training
sessions, I've move the table to a new page

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonTraining/Events

and updated the events page to instead point to the calendar
listings we are using nowadays for conferences and user groups
(I don't know how to embed the calendars directly on the page -
that would be ideal, of course):

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEvents

Regarding the formatting of the training page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonTraining

I've fixed the layout and clarified the editing instructions
a bit.

Cheers,

I agree that most of the "events" mentioned on that page should
probably go to the more relevant training page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonTraining

Since that page is cluttered with course dates as well, perhaps
it would be good to create a new subpage

which then lists the dates.

The table on the events page can then be removed, since
we would like all conference and user group events to be
listed on the events calendars.

Thanks for the note.

The AFL link did go to a copy of the original opensource.org
page about the AFL 2.1 which had been removed a couple of years ago.

It seems the same has happened to the blog post now and this
redirects to the blog home page.

I've replaced the link with the one we're using on the contrib
forms:

http://www.samurajdata.se/opensource/mirror/licenses/afl-2.1.php

I've also created local copies of the AFL-2.1 and Apache-2.0
licenses so that we have known good copies:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonSoftwareFoundationLicenseFaq/AFL-2.1
https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonSoftwareFoundationLicenseFaq/Apache-License-2.0

2015-11-27 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
It looks like someone ran a script yesterday to inspect
the job board for vulnerabilities.

There were more than a hundred entries of the form below.

Someone apparently already cleared out those entries from the
database: thanks for that !

I'll open a ticket for this, so that we can look for ways
to help prevent this in the future.

Rather than removing the entry, I'd move it to an historic section.

The McMillan installer was one of the first such installer
creators we had for Python.

Both are compilers and they do allow you to create Python
applications, just like gcc does for C (together with the
libc runtime), so I don't really understand why you would
not call them implementations of the language. They both
take Python code on input :-)

I guess putting them under a "Python Compiler" heading
would satisfy your request.

I'm not sure I follow. Cython runs all Python code, plus
manages extensions for more easily compiling functions
to C extensions. Nuitka tries to implement most of CPython.
Both support use of Python C extensions.

It's true that both need libpython - that's why I listed them
as "Alternative CPython" and not as "Alternative Python"
implementations :-)

You mean PythonAnywhere ?

I think there's a misunderstanding here. I just listed
alternative implementations which aren't already mentioned

If you still can't log in by tomorrow, let me know. You can try
a password recovery to see whether email comes through:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/EditorsGroup?action=recoverpass

The Mailman emails sometimes get blocked by spam filters
and we recently had a change in the IP address of mail.python.org
which may still be causing a bit of trouble.

For hopefully obvious reasons, the captcha solutions are not
available publicly :-)

If you have a better suggestion, I can replace this captcha
with a new one. Please email me in private.

I don't think that's possible without hacking the moin code
to add such a redirect. Because that would leave us with a custom
installation, I'm rather reluctant to apply such patches.

We are already running an OpenID plugin which is unmaintained
and has lost 2/3 of its functionality because of this: Google
no longer does OpenID and myOpenID has gone out of business,
leaving only Launchpad as OpenID provider.

All that said, if you know a way to do this without hacking the
moin code (theme changes are fine), please let me know.

You may want to try creating an account without OpenID. AFAIK, only
Launchpad still works with this.

These database wiki pages are about Python interfaces to databases,
not about ODBC drivers which some of those Python interfaces
use to talk to the database as client interface.

Accordingly, I don't think the wiki page is the right place to
advertise your ODBC driver. pyodbc as interface to your driver
is already listed.

I have added a new page ODBCDrivers linked from the ODBC wiki page to
provide listings of ODBC drivers:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/ODBCDrivers

You can add your driver there.

Re: [pydotorg-www] Permission to create Europython2015 sprint page

2015-07-25 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Hi Chris,

some background: I opened up the sprints page for everyone
to edit without login, since folks at EuroPython want to easily
be able to access it and the spammers won't find out until
after the conference :-)

Editing other pages and creating new ones still needs the login, of course.

Cheers,

Ahh. I'm not sure what the policy is for the Trusted Editors group, so

Those ACLs were from the time before we had the EditorsGroup.

they require adding new entries to the end or the top of listings.
If not, a quick look at the order used on the page will usually give

While it's always nice to see new ODBC drivers appear on the market,
I fail to see the relationship between your driver and Python.

The page you mentioned is meant for Python interface to SQL Server.

Creating sub-pages is easy: just add the URL for the subpage to
the main pages URL, e.g.

https://wiki.python.org/moin/AbqPython/
https://wiki.python.org/moin/AbqPython/Meeting20150511/
https://wiki.python.org/moin/AbqPython/Sprint2015/

[pydotorg-www] New PSF work group: Pydotorg WG

2015-06-05 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Dear list members,

FYI: there's a new PSF WG dealing with python.org.

I frankly don't know why this list was ignored again in this process
(just like it was for the python.org redesign), but I at least wanted
you to know about it:

https://wiki.python.org/psf/PydotorgWG

It's just as closed as the redesign group was... :-(

I've CCed Van, the chair of the WG, to check whether we can change
this.

 One example is at https://wiki.python.org/moin/Generators

 Link to PEP-255 (http(s)://www.python.org/peps/pep-255) is missing /dev. (I
guess I know what the story behind that is...)

This looks to me like a task for simple search and replace script, but
until someone with access to infrastructure does that, it could be crowd
 sourced.

There's no easy way to do searchreplace on the wiki. It certainly
cannot be done on the backend storage, since that breaks the wiki
history.

We once wrote a search and replace plugin for moin, but it's
for an older version:

http://www.egenix.com/library/moinmoin/

Or create a redirect on the apache.

I've opened an issue for this:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/issues/741

since this problem will affect not only the wiki but also most
old PEP links on the Internet.

I don't think Peter deals with them. Largely the traffic is from

IIRC, wasn't moderation introduced to the list for a reason? We could
just remove it, as long as people don't complain about the occasional

How many spam messages do you see in moderation for this list ?

Perhaps we could just try to turn off moderation and then revisit

[pydotorg-www] Switching pythondotorg Vagrant to Ansible

2015-03-21 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
Berker Peksag has been working on a patch to replace Chef for the Vagrant
setup on pythondorg (the config that is used for running a local instance
of the site) with Ansible.

Here's the patch:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg/compare/master...berkerpeksag:switch-to-ansible

I'm very much in favor of this, since I find Chef to be far to complex
for a simple thing as a Vagrant VM. It would hopefully make it
easier to get new developers interested in helping with the
pythondotorg code base.

Anyone against this ?

Thanks,

 Are user names case sensitive?

Yes.

I had some trouble signing in as
Rosuav and ended up creating a new account named rosuav, all
 lower-case.

Ok, I changed the entry in the admin group.

The wiki was running very slowly at times, even timed out
with 504 Gateway Timeout once or twice, so I'm not entirely sure what
worked and what didn't. If you prefer, I could start over with the
name ChrisAngelico, which matches the format of other account names.

You're admin now, so you can change this yourself :-)

https://wiki.python.org/moin/AdminGroup

It's certainly better to have readable names associated with the
accounts. Plus you get a nice home page to associate with your
name.

[pydotorg-www] Wiki editing rights... more volunteers needed

2015-02-20 Thread M.-A. Lemburg
I have a feeling, I'm the only one processing these requests.

I could use some help, since I don't want to keep people waiting
too long and also don't want to be the bottleneck of all this.

This is the editors page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/EditorsGroup

Simply add new editors to the bottom of the listing.

Thanks,

As in previous years, you're welcome (and even encouraged!) to apply as a
separate mentoring org and use us as your backup plan.

I'd like to have a decent number of ideas pages linked by the time we get
our application in to Google (it's due Feb 20th), so if you've participated
in the past and want to be added to the wiki page, let me know or add
yourselves! You don't have to be done with your page: just some basic info
and a few ideas is enough for a link so you can start attracting students.

(Note that the edit permissions on the wiki have been reset since last
year so if you can't edit the page you may have to email
pydotorg-www@python.org and tell them your wiki username and that you
want to edit the gsoc page.)

You'll still need at least 3 mentors willing to commit to the whole
summer, but I won't bother registering people until after acceptances from
Google go out, so just work on those ideas pages right now!

  Terri
