[Qgis-user] joining ms access to shapefile

2012-02-25 Thread Jake Maier
Hi I'm new to qgis (I have some ArcMap experience) and I'm having problems
joining a ms access database to a shapefile. I'm using windows 7 and ms
office 2007. I tried to google the information about a join of access to
shapefile but got more confused in the process instead.
Can anyone please help and give me some pointers.
Thank you very much

RE: [Qgis-user] Google maps kml file won't open

2012-02-25 Thread Jake Maier
When I save Google Earth polygons or lines and look at the file, the first
point of the line or polygon has no coordinate and a phony projected
coordinate. Check if that is an issue for you. I don't know why that happens
on my system here, but a work around for me is to create a token first point
and delete it then with a program like garmin dnr (it's free) in case of
lines or in the case of polygons copy the last point into the space of the
first point.
I don't know if this is your issue, but again this happens regularly in my
system if I save GE layers.

Often times if the kml is downloaded from Google Maps, it's not the actual
data but only a link to the real data which is hosted online.
An easy way to check is to open the kml in a text editor, it will be quite
short and obvious if the actual x,y data is in the file.

See http://sites.google.com/site/gmapstips/export-my-map-as-kml for more
information.

If this isn't the issue and the data is public and you can point us to a
copy to test that would be great.

Thanks,
Alex

RE: [Qgis-user] RE: joining ms access to shapefile

2012-02-26 Thread Jake Maier
Thanks Koos,
I seem to have a problem with the drivers. Looking at the ODBC Data Source
Administrator I see the dBase Files, the Excel Files and the MS Access
Database listed under User DSN, but when I try to configure them I get 2
messages. First "the setup routines for the Microsoft Access Driver could
not be found. Please reinstall the driver" and the second "the specified DSN
contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application". I
seem not to be able to set up a driver, but get stuck with empty choices in
subsequent drop down lists
Do you (or anyone else) please point me in the right direction to reinstall
the drivers. The error messages show up for all three drivers installed.
Thanks for any help in advance

Hi Jake,

I have worked a bit with Access and QGIS together...from my experience it
works best when your database is saved in an older format (.mbd).

You can add the .mdb as an ODBC connection or (if I remember
correctly) the better way is to add it simply as a vector layer.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it is a static connection (read
only), but it works...

[Qgis-user] (no subject)

2012-03-09 Thread Jake Maier
Hi, I have a hell of a time with the CRS of my project.

I try to use google streets, openstreetmap and naip 2011 (a wms map) in the
same project. I also have a shp file UTM 19 NAD 83 right now loaded to it.

All layers are in different CRS and I loaded them with OTF enabled.

After many tries I managed to sync all the layers and they displayed on top
of each other at the right place. After I saved and reopened the project at
a later time everything was displaying at the wrong place (meaning at it's
original unprojected place).

What do I miss here.

How do I best work with layers in different CRS?

Thanks for your help in advance

are you using layers from the "openlayers" plugin? if yes, then you must
reproject everything in the google mercator CRS.

RE: [Qgis-user] (no subject)

2012-03-09 Thread Jake Maier
It looks now to me that all layers always loaded correctly. What seems to be
the problem is that I cannot get Google Streets or OpenstreetMap to display.
Both these layers were placed underneath the shp and the NAIP (WMS) maps.
Turning off the NAIP layer should activate the Google Street map, which is
directly under the NAIP layer and turned on, but I cannot get it to display. I
turned the layer on and off, and checked and unchecked (repeatedly) the render
button. But nothing happens. When I zoomed into the map, the complete google
streets displays, which is odd because by zooming in it actually zoomed out.
Maybe this is a bug?

no, it means that the layers from the OL plugin are not reprojectable, so you
must reproject everything else in their own CRS, google mercator.

The layers from the OL plugin are not "supported" in the composer. You may want
to use this virtual earth wms server

http://geoposer.com:443/server/services/ve.xml

and it will work just fine also in the composer.

Thanks Noli,
That was exactly the advice I was hoping for.
I write forest management plan, and work with some biologists on Natural
Resources Inventories. I provide the mapping with a bit forestry consulting

So I want to show drainage maps or vegetation maps (airphotos or topomaps
overlain with different shaded polygons).
One important future goal is to show particular stands depending on
information in the database. I also was hoping grass may provide better ways
to calculate area. I need English system, acres. I think that is not
provided in QGIS.

Hi Jake,

If you are just new to QGIS, just use QGIS without Grass plug-in first.
Familiarize yourself with QGIS. Download and read QGIS manual.
You can always install the Grass plug-in later.

If you used ArcMap before and not ArcInfo, mostly like to you don't need
Grass at the moment. Most of QGIS users (including me) have a little use of
Grass until you want advance Geoprocessing which can not do in QGIS.

BTW, sort of things you want to use QGIS for forestry application.

( BTW,I am trying to use QGIS for forest management and Spatial forest
estate modelling.)

RE: [Qgis-user] GPS route

2012-03-10 Thread Jake Maier
Michael,

What about a route? String 100m lines together in a route, You even can tell
the GPS when to notify you about the coming of a node which will be the
beginning of a new line. Because it's nearly impossible to hit a 1X1m square
with the GPS, (it will constantly move on you) I use this feature to let me
know when I'm let's say 10 m from the point and then use a fixed amount of
paces and the bearing to be fairly unbiased in locating the point.

straight polylines with a node every 100m, but keep the same line?

Obviously I can create points every 100m using the GRASS toolbox, but these
are then converted to a waypoint when saved as gpx. If I save the two node
lines then the GPS wont indicate when I've reached the next survey point...

Any help gladly appreciated!

To calculate area - (shapeflie file) in QGIS,

Have a look on the Vector (menu)->Geometry Tools -> Export / Add geometry
columns.

You will get a new shapefile with area and perimetre columns

Simple hack for acres;

Open dbf file of that shapefiles in LibreOffice / OpenOffice add a new
columns for arces and just just conversion from units to acres.

I think you can add column as well in the attributes table and add the
formula for conversion tor default unit to acres.

Yes, it is best to use the attribute table instead of messing around with
Openoffice.
And at least in QGIS master you can skip the "Export / Add geometry" step -
just open the attribute table and you can use the field calculator to
calculate the area and convert it into acres in one step.

Deleting a feature is not the same as deleting a field, and requires a
feature to be selected.
Deleting a field from the attribute table window is I think only possible
with QGIS master and gdal 1.9

RE: [Qgis-user] Forestry Week? (was Case sensitive)

2012-03-13 Thread Jake Maier
I just started using QGIS. I used a conservation copy of ArcMap before. Now
after a week or so on this list I can see that what I could do with ArcMap,
I will be able to do with QGIS. Therefore, I'll be using QGIS for all my
mapping needs.
That is I will delineate all stands, join soil information from a USDA
database to a soil polygons, draw lake and wetland buffers, and other basic
mapping tasks. I hope to extend to incorporate more database information to
the map like species density information and volume information. I guess
about all information in forestry has a spatial component therefore may be
and possibly should be incorporated in a GIS. For me that is a little work
in progress. :)

Here's a screenie of my Qgis use. Managing about 100 hectares of productive
forest with myself doing some work (precomercial thinning, thinning).

http://bayimg.com/eanFlAAdE

* Aerial photo (0.5m/pixel, color)
* Old survey map detailing measures and markers
* Parcels with info (se attribute table)
* Tracks from precomercial thinning (wearing my Garmin Forerunner 305 when
doing forestry work, makes it easy to kepp track what I've done)
* Roads, paths
* Layers detailing what has been planted, thinned, and cut down.
* Borders and markers, also exported to handheld GPS (and to Android phone
with Oruxmaps and google earth aerial in the background).
* Notes where I found old barbed wire.
* Notes of good places to pick mushroom... ;)

Standard QGIS, data stord in shapefiles.

Hi Tyler,

Marco Bernasocchi is working on QGIS for Android - and is always looking for
sponsors ;-)

It works like QGIS on Desktop - but Python is not yet available. You, can
however use custom forms, Spatialite and the Offline editing plugin, which can
synchronize between a central Postgis data warehouse and spatialite for mobile
workers. Postgis is also supported, but you would need a permanent network
connection.

It probably would need some real world testing, but it looks promising.
You need at least a phone with a display size like the Samsung Galaxy Notes or
a real tablet, like the Panasonic Toughpad.

If you have specific questions, please contact Marco Bernasocchi directly or
use http://hub.qgis.org/projects/android-qgis

Hope this helps,
Andreas

BTW: in Switzerland there is a whole group of Forestry engineers that
collaborate on the training of QGIS for forestry engineers and the development
of tools.

QGIS tends to show area calculations above .01 sq miles as sq miles, with
anything less than that in sq ft. But it sounds like the measurement isn't

Hello Des

I´m also using GPSmap62

This GPS gives me trouble downloading and uploading via QGIS...

So this is how I do:

Use Explorer to find your Garmin Unit

Click on GPX

Find the GPX file Waypoints_dd_mm_yy.gpx

Copy the file to your disk.

>From QGIS

Click on Plugin>GPS>GPS Tool

Choose Load GPX file

Your waypoints will be loaded in the mapwindow.

For adding extra coloums, you have to save the GPX as a Shapefile.

RightClick on the file in Layers

Change CRS

RightClick on the waypoint-layer and remove

Add Vectorlayer

Open Attribut table

Toggel Editing Mode (Ctrl E)

New Column (Ctrl W)

>>> "Des Callaghan"  22-04-2012 12:22 >>>

Hello Forum,

I’ve just began to use QGIS, which looks like a wonderful piece of software. I
wonder if anyone can help me with a query. I have a hand-held Garmin GPSMAP 62s
GPS with which I collect waypoints while out in the field, stored in a *.gpx
file. Within QGIS I wish to:

Import the gpx file and have the waypoints plotted as points within the BNG
projection (EPSG:27700), each labelled according to their individual ‘wpt’ tag
held within the gpx file.

Create a new column within the table created from the gpx file and populate
this with the OS Grid Reference for each waypoint (e.g. SD4568798345).

Add a Google Earth layer as background

Any help with achieving this would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in
advance.

Best wishes,

Des

[Qgis-user] map scale

2012-05-08 Thread Jake Maier
Please I'm having a hard time with the scale in print manager.

I use UTM as datum but would like to print my maps in Miles and feet.

I changed the /settings/options/map tools to feet, but that did not change
anything in the print master

There I tried 1609.344 in the segment size but I would need 0.3048 in the
units per bar unit and I can only define 2 decimal places here and therefore
I get 5364.48 feet as the scale display.

I'm not sure if I'm describing my problem very clear, but in short I'd like
to use NAD83/UTM zone 19N as CRS but feet and miles for the scale bar. How
can I best do that.

Who could please help me with this.

Thanks

Thank you Alex. This worked half. I need to move the decimal place 2 places
(X100). I only can move it one (x10). The problem is that I get a very long
scale bar otherwise. Or it displays 528 instead of 5280 (feet per mile). I
guess I may have to wait for a fix. In the meanwhile I will use 100 feet as
scale.
Nice to know I found a bug.

I think you've found a bug in the decimal limit. As a workaround I think you
can move everything over a decimal place (so x10) and then adjust the
segment size/number of units per segment to come out to what you want.

[Qgis-user] rendering problem in print composer

2012-05-14 Thread Jake Maier
I created a custom point, (stylist bird house) and it looks like a birdhouse
in QGIS but when I bring the map into print composer the lines are
misplaced. Creating the bird house, I lowered respective raised a straight
line and turned it 90 degrees for floor and ceiling and used a > 90 degrees
turned as roof. Again it all looks ok when displayed in qgis but when I
bring it into the print composer all part seem to print on the same level
and not turned 90 degrees. Strangely the legend prints the houses correctly.

Did I find my second bug or do I just miss an important step?
Can anyone please help?

RE: [Qgis-user] rendering problem in print composer

2012-05-15 Thread Jake Maier
Thank you Andreas for your suggestion. I'll try the svg file later.
The misalignment happens in the actual paper print out, on screen, and also
when I export it to a jpg file. Again each time the legend is correct but on
the actual map is misaligned and it looks like it's just the 90 degree turning
of the individual parts that is not happening. The enlarging and lowering or
raising of the parts is happening.
Thank you again for your time
Jake

 Hi Jake,

This sounds very strange. Is this only happening in the print composer
preview or also in the actual print out (PDF or real print out).

Older QGIS versions (1.7 and below) did not show the print previews in the
print composer with the correct scalings (the map extent was correct, but
symbol sizes, line-widths and text sizes were not (usually drawn bigger
compared to the print out)).

In your case I would recommend that you create an SVG file with your
birdhouse (you can do that in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator). You then can use
this bird house SVG file to represent your bird house symbol.

 Hope this helps,
 Andreas

[Qgis-user] annotation

2012-05-20 Thread Jake Maier
I need some help with annotations

I worked with annotations in ArcMap, so I'm a little familiar with the
concept and some of its workings in ArcMap. I tried to read up on it
googling annotations and qgis. Now I seem stuck on creating a .ui in a qt
designer. Help!!! Where do I find the qt designer. I see it mention in some
places but tried in vain to locate a download or a place to load it as a
python extension.

I have a (soil) layer with lots of polygons and soil symbols. But the
symbols are often outside the polygons. Now I need to move those labels and
thought annotations would be the best way to accomplish this. But how do I
do this.

While at this topic, does qgis provide the possibiltiy to bend an annotation
following a polyline?

Thanks for any pointers

Jake

I thought I figured it out with your help Alex, but I can't seem to
'activate' nor move the rotate label button. They stay grayed out whatever I
do. I played with the free placement or any of the other placements in

[Qgis-user] labels

2012-05-22 Thread Jake Maier
I guess I'm getting old and slow comprehending, but I still can't make these
labels work. I created 2 additional fields in the shape file as xcoord and
ycoord, and I used all the placement options and used xcoord and ycoord in
the data defined settings, still I can't move an individual label where I
want it. The move label does not turn black neither does the rotate label.
What am I still missing.

I now managed to turn the move and rotate label on, but only to have all
labels disappear when I assign the fields in data defined settings (I guess
because of the initial value of 0). How can I fill the coordinate fields
with the initial values without having to enter all the values manually?

[JM]
I think I figured it out myself. When I create a field with the table manager
it will place a 0 in the cell. Using the insert feature in the table itself it
will place a null in the cell.
Unfortunately that's not the end of my questions on the issue. Now I need to
duplicate a label, because some of my soils are large and twisted and I need to
insert 2 or 3 labels for the same soil, How can I do this.
Thanks again for any help

Thanks Giovanni, this is a hard nut to crack for me for whatever reason.
I insert a new field with table manager and it will enter the zeros in each
cell automatically. I have many soils to deal with and don't want to enter a
null in each cell manually. How can I fill the column with nulls or delete all

[Qgis-user] copying selected feature information

I would appreciate some help with copying acreage information in a table

Thank you Giovanni,
Do you recommend downloading 1.8 and where would I get it. I only see
information about 1.8 but didn't see a download link. Is it stabile enough to
work with it or should I better wait for the official release. When is the
official release expected?

[JM] Morton, yes I'm aware of it but I totally forgot about it and never

Excel perfect for that because with autofilter you can easily select just
exactly the info that you need. Great, I don't know why I never thought

I second this and I wonder if projects, which need financial support, could
be listed there too. Then we could say I'd like my donation to a specific

Any suggestions?

If you're willing to work with spatialite, then you can do this with a query as
follows:
(Assuming you have a roads shape file, with columns "road_id", and "road_name")

spatialite> .loadshp roads.shp roads LATIN1 4326
spatialite> CREATE TABLE roads_merged (road_id integer primary key, road_name
text);
spatialite> SELECT AddGeometryColumn('roads_merged', 'Geometry', 4326,
'MULTILINESTRING', 'XY');
spatialite> INSERT INTO roads_merged (road_id, road_name, Geometry)
SELECT road_id, road_name, CastToMulti(GUnion(Geometry))
FROM roads
GROUP BY road_name;

The first line loads a shapefile into spatialite, with LATIN1 encoding and EPSG
code 4326 (Lon/Lat WGS84)
The second creates a new empty table for the merged roads, and the third makes
this new table spatial, accepting geometry types MULTILINESTRING, and also EPSG
4326.
The last line, the INSERT uses GROUP BY to merge the rows from the original
table with the same road name. And the GUnion() function merges the line
segment's geometry into MULTILINESTRING features. (CastToMulti to make sure...)

Give it a try,
Micha

Hi Jake

In the printcomposer you can save a template.

File>Save as template.

And to use the template

File>Load template.

Kind regards

Is there something like a default print template so I could have the default
use English paper size and default setup for the legend and things like that

Thanks

Re: [Qgis-user] default print template

2012-06-10 Thread Jake Maier
Thank you very much Christine. This is a nice template and I will take some
of the ideas, but my question actually was not so much the template itself
but the *default* template, because I don't want to each time I open the
composer to load the template, but it's not a problem really and I was just
wondering if it could be customized even more.
Again thanks

[JM] Yes Etienne, that's exactly what I had in mind.
Tell qgis that this template should be loaded as the default at the
beginning of each program start.
Is there a way to have a python file loaded and executed as a default each
time the program starts?
I don't know much about python yet, but want to learn more about it and I'm
sure it can be programmed to do exactly that.

[Qgis-user] counting fish

2017-02-06 Thread Jake Maier

Is there an easy way, even an existing plugin, to identify photos which show
an object (fish) swimming over a white board.

I live on a river and there is a potential problem with alewives, an
extremely important fish in the food chain. I'd like to find a way with a
wildlife camera to take a photo at regular intervals over 3 week. The more
photos I can handle (possibly thousands) the more accurate my count.

I was hoping to find an automated way to identify those photos which show an
object on the whitish background. I thought it should be possible to just
look at the average gray value of the photo.

Is there a fairly easy way to do this?

Thanks for any help.

[Qgis-user] qgis 1.8 when official release

Hi
I postpone installing the nightly 1.8 version since about a month because I
hear from different sources that the official release is right around the

It still seems not to be ready for release. Hearing all the good stuff about

now really is right around the corner and will be officially release
whenever I finished the download.
Does anyone have more exact release date information?

[Qgis-user] qgis has stopped working

2012-06-30 Thread Jake Maier

I get a message when I exit qgis that qgis has stopped working and windows

I have also qgis installed on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 and it is working

Unless you want to reproject or share the data with others, I doubt there's

This might of happened: If one of your shapefiles contained lines and you
accidentally selected a line with the info tool it would stay displayed even
after you turn that layer off. You have to turn off the info box and select
a different tool for the line to go away. That's why it went away when you

David,

I think you are right, because I was editing a shapefile, and before that I

[Qgis-user] problem with table manager

2012-11-25 Thread Jake Maier
I tried to add 2 columns to a table for label placement and everything seems
to work as expected. I could see the 2 columns listed in table manager, but
after the manager created the new attribute table only had one column left.
I started with 4 columns, added 2 and was then left with just one column.
Not only did the 2 added columns not show up the manager deleted 3 of the 4
original columns

It looks like a bug or am I missing something.

Thanks for your help

[Qgis-user] georeferencer issue

2013-01-21 Thread Jake Maier
I looked at the tutorial for using the georeferencer and it looked quite
simple and straight forward. But applying it I get strange results.

Depending on the transformation type I get either a black rectangle or the
image I want to reference, but at a wrong location. Each of the
transformation types puts the image at its specific location

I did use the feature to select the coordinates from the map canvas and in
the table the coordinates are displayed correctly in the dstX and the dstY
column. Still I can't get the image to display at the correct place on the
map canvas.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any hint

I didn't think I would have problems with clipping. In the past it always

Subject: RE: QGIS crashes?

Some are files I created and some are from others. I can be editing
shapefile and it will crash, sometime but not always when saving.

Here is a more bizarre example:

Yesterday I went to add a polygon to an to an existing shapefile that I had
worked on before. The add polygon process looked fine, it shows up in the
attribute table, the calculated acreage is 0.004 acres when it should be 1.4
acres, and all the areas of the other polygons are OK. When I click zoom to
selected rows from the attribute table it zooms to the entire polygon, but
when I click the polygon on the map with the Information button there is
nothing there. Then or any time in this process it may crash. This is on
a map with some photos as base and a few other layers. So, I tried an
experiment and opened a new QGIS project, opened the shapefile and was able
to add a polygon with no problem. Then I closed the new project, opened the
old project, and was able to open the edited polygon and update the
properties, etc.

With another project with some of the same layers I tried to make a new
shapefile layer and went through all the steps, the layer was created, (all
the basic files are visible in Explorer) but I could not actually create a
polygon that was visible. So, I went to the simple "new project" (no
rasters) described in the prior paragraph and was able to create a new layer
and create the polygon I wanted. Saved that, then I could open it and see
it with the old project.

These issues seem to be getting more frequent. Even when I am able to create
shapefiles and edit polygons I may get one to several crashes in a session.

Hi Jake,

I had a plugin in preparation that amongst others does exactly what you
want: within an editing session cut out from polygons in editable theme with
selected polygons from another theme.
The plugin is called DigitizingTools and is planned to contain more tools in
the future. I uploaded it to the plugin repository just now, feel free to
give it a try and report any problems.
It is marked as experimental (because it is not well tested right now) and
only works with current master (aka QGIS 2).

coordinates plugin and the only way to get rid of it was to uninstall the
plugin but I ignore it because the plugin is so useful!

Probably the region outline from GRASS. On the GRASS toolbar there's a
button to show/not show the region.

Re: [Qgis-user] hydro-flatenning process ?

2013-07-09 Thread Jake Maier
John,

Would TauDEM be helpful to show consequences of a dam removal project at the
coast (of Maine), where the dam removal would create reversing falls and
had consequences upstream for bridge foundations and wetlands (now
freshwater then brackish to some degree)?

What kind of input variable would I need and what kind of output information
would I gain?

Thanks for any pointers

TauDEM (http://hydrology.uwrl.usu.edu/taudem/taudem5.0/index.html) also
looks like a good candidate for this type of processing and can be
configured to run through QGIS/SEXTANTE.

Both SAGA & GRASS have strong raster & hydrology based tools. You would need
to elaborate on the exact methodology desired, but look around these tools.

[Qgis-user] qgis extremely slow with shapefiles

2013-07-10 Thread Jake Maier
I just switched to 2.0 and like the improvements very much.

First all went very well, but now working with an 1.8 file saved as 2.0 file
the processing of vector layers is excruciately slow. Entering a new node or
point takes minutes and I always get a message "Error, latitude or longitude
exceeded limits. I'm here in Maine and everything is in UTM 19 N. I don't
understand why I get particularly this error message.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

Thanks very much for your help.

Maybe you can also use the Windows snipping tool to copy the image directly

[Qgis-user] jpg display as colored stripes in 2.0.1

2013-09-27 Thread Jake Maier
I just downloaded version 2.0.1. The program loaded fast and smooth until it
was time to load the aerial photos. They only displayed as colored stripes
across the screen. I downloaded the photos again from the web (those
displayed alright) and saved them as jpg, but again they came up only as
colored stripes.

Any idea what went wrong?

Thanks for any pointer.

how would you feel about adding a donate link in the help menu (like after
qgis website)? the link could then point to a qgis.org page with all
possible payments backends we want to support or point directly to paypal or
similar.

i think this would give us a very simple/visible way to donate

[Qgis-user] disappearing shape layer

2013-11-05 Thread Jake Maier
Actually the layer itself is not disappearing. It just will not display.

I open the attribute table, there is a 125 acre polygon

I select zoom to layer and it displays the right area

I turn it on and off and on again several times it will not display a
polygon

I look into the properties/style and everything look OK (as far as I know,
that is)

I don't know how I can get the layer to display again

Does anybody have an idea?

On a related item, when I turn on a layer, it often will only display a
check on the layer but will not display the layer. After I turn the layer
off and on again, it will normally display.

Thanks for any help
