[Qgis-user] Looking for QGIS Python code for a three-level menu?

2024-05-12 Thread Elstermann, Mike via QGIS-User
Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a piece of QGIS Python code for a three-level menu, something
like this:

Plugins
   |
   |
MyMenu > -+-- Submenu 1 > SubSubMenu 1.1
   | | +--- SubSubMenu 1.2
   | | +--- SubSubMenu 1.3
Other... |
  +-- Submenu 2 > SubSubMenu 2.1
  | +--- SubSubMenu 2.2
  | +--- SubSubMenu 2.3
  | +--- SubSubMenu 2.4
  |
  +-- Submenu 3 > SubSubMenu 3.1
  +--- SubSubMenu 3.2

Can anyone help with a code snippet?

 Thanks & best regards, mikeE.

[Qgis-user] Newbie-questions for Publishing my 1st QGIS Plugin

2024-04-17 Thread Elstermann, Mike via QGIS-User

Hello everyone,

I am new to QGIS plugin programming. My questions are related to the
publication of plugins in the QGIS Plugin Repository.
I uploaded my plugin "OD_LSA_Loader" six days ago (11.04.2024), plugin ID 3346,
yesterday (16.04.2024) another new version. There was no error message in both
cases, everything seems OK.

Now to my questions:
- Who releases the plugin when or informs me if I did something wrong or if
further steps are necessary?
- Is there still something to do, have I forgotten something, are there still
errors?
- Or am I just too impatient?

Thank you & best regards, mikeE.

[Qgis-user] WFS: Change symbolization (outline color/thickness and fill) using Python in QGIS.

2024-04-09 Thread Elstermann, Mike via QGIS-User
Hello everyone,

I have a code snippet to load a WFS, how can I easily change the symbolization

lyr14 = QgsVectorLayer(uri, "LSA: ALKIS Gebäude (WFS)" , ‚WFS')
QgsProject.instance().addMapLayer(lyr14)

[Qgis-user] Issue with Building Virtual Point Cloud (VPC)

2024-02-13 Thread Mike Treglia via QGIS-User
Hi all,

I have a folder with a LOT of point cloud files (1,740) - all stored as
cloud optimized point clouds (COPCs), which were converted from .las files
via QGIS. I'm trying to build a virtual point cloud via QGIS, selecting the
folder with all of the COPCs. However as its running, fairly on, it stops
running and I get a message "incorrect parameter value for layers."

I'm not finding any log files, and no .vpc file is created.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting and such? They are all from the same
source, for the same general geographic area, so while I haven't checked
all of the CRS information is the same, anticipate it should be across all
of these files.

And in case it helps, below is the "About" info for my install

Mike

Dear users,

I am using QGIS 3.32 version and I want to download the 3.34 version on my Mac
computer (macOS 12.7.1). I properly downloaded and loaded the installation
package for Mac computers on the QGIS web page. Then I ran QGIS, but the

I precise that I use QGIS for personal purposes. I hope I have been clear in my

Re: [Qgis-user] Possibility for Labels as Hyperlinks in PDF Output?

2023-09-11 Thread Mike Treglia via QGIS-User
Thanks, Keith, for pointing me to that documentation.

That's really helpful. I guess I had gotten confused with some
functionality with web-map exports in QGIS2Web - leaflet maps - in that
form, a field with an html-formatted hyperlink would function as a
hyperlink (though a hyperlink label still just seems to be formatted as a
link, but not function as one.)

I also see that in the Print Composer, manually using the "Add Label"
functionality enables one to include html-formatted hyperlinks, which
function in exported PDFs (when "render as html" is checked in the label
properties in the print composer). So, it looks like there is almost the
functionality I'm looking for, but not quite. If there's a way to place
labels from a map layer in a print composer in the right spots, that could
potentially work, but that seems challenging - I can't wrap my brain around
how that would functionally even work.

Welcome any other ideas folks have, or how others have worked through
this. It seems like the alternative options to doing this fully in QGIS
would involve exporting the PDF and working in PDF-editing software to
incorporate the links.

Best,
Mike

[Qgis-user] Possibility for Labels as Hyperlinks in PDF Output?

2023-09-11 Thread Mike Treglia via QGIS-User
Hi all,

Working on a project where the desired output is PDF map, where the labels
are hyperlinks. From searching around, it seems like there are, at least
historically, some challenges related to this functionality and Qt, which
might still be present?

I'm finding that in the Print Composer in QGIS, I can add a label that
functions as a hyperlink in an exported PDF (using the "render as HTML"
functionality"), but labels associated with a layer, placed in the main map
window, do not function as hyperlinks when exported as a PDF.

Thus, wanted to check if maybe either I'm missing something - like this
is/should be possible, or if not directly, maybe there's an efficient
work-around? I'm working in QGIS 3.32-2 most immediately for testing this,
on Windows.

Thanks, all, for any insights!

What is ITAR?  When I look up ITAR I get:
International Traffic in Arms Regulations

Ah, I see that is it:

"ITAR rules is a precondition of receiving controlled
goods and technologies from a U.S. company."

We are running into that with a project I am involved

Theoretically QGIS is open source code.  I have not proved that
myself, but that is what I hear.  If that is the case, Yes,
you can see the QGIS code used for georeferencing - if you can
find it :-)

Hello,

I have a problem and I hope for an answer here. I know how to
georeference a tif map with geopoints in QGIS. I have developed a shiny
app and want to automate/program the georeferencing for several maps
there (for loop). Unfortunately, I've tried a lot and can't get it
directly under python without errors. My question, is there any way I
can see the python code generated during georeferencing in QGIS? I can
develop something myself in the Python console, but not the steps that I
create with the QGIS program for georeferencing, right?
Is there a way to see the python code generated during georeferencing in
QGIS? -GPT says yes, but nothing happens to me in the console 

set shape to SVG and click on the ellipsis (...) and navigate to your
shield's SVG file. Then you need to adjust the offset, shield size and
the text size and color, etc.. It takes a while but when you figure it
out be sure to save the style to an SLD or QML file so you can reuse
it. If you are using PostGIS or other database you can save the style
in the database as a default for your highway lines.

Hi Mike,

think your map is much larger than the page you are fitting it to.

I recommend:
1) delete the map.
You will probably see a lot of grey with a small white box. The
white box is what gets printed. Note that by default the layout is A4
size. You probably want Letter or Legal.
2) Right click inside the white box (if you don't see the white box do
3 first)

a) select Page Properties
b) set the "Page Size" "Size". Legal and Letter are in the middle of
the list.
3) left click the "zoom full" icon, 4th from the left, 2nd toolbar
from the top. Then add a new map, this time fit it within the white
area of the page.

Then try exporting your image again.

Greetings,
I have read over the documentation for the Layout.
I have added a map to the layout.
The view of the map is dim or obscured as it was behind a semi
transparent skin.
When I export the layout as an image only a portion of the map is saved.
I looked for an option such as "Fit map to layout size" but I could not
find anything.
There are screen shots here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PuLieK9hYETMQFyy5

If the map size is changed how does one refresh the layout to reload the
map?
Thanks,
WV-Mike

I found it. The icons area a bit small for my eyes.

Re: [Qgis-user] Two LAZ file possible issues iwth some new data we received to processs

2023-02-20 Thread Mike Stanton via QGIS-User
Hi Nicolas, thank you for the well researched and detailed answer. I was
running on the latest build and it had a the new feature for Cloud Optimization
COPC. That feature doubled the number of open files for the process and I
dropped back to 3.22 to get my processing done. It appears that during the
indexing process of 3.28 the COPC files are left open even after moving on to
another LAZ file. The 3.22 level did not create the COPC files and everything
worked out for the images.

Hi,

I did run into this layer number limite in the past. If you check the user
list or if you Google “QGIS, maximum amount of layers… “ you will find multiple
post. The issue, at the time was caused by limites in the OS. (Windows 7 at
the time), OSX had and easy work around. Same thing for the various flavours
of Linux.

At the time, I either combined files when using QGIS or opened them in Saga
that did not have this problem. I believe this was because Saga, at least back
then, loaded all the file into memory and did not keep a handle on the files
once is was open.

This is the type of thing that got me into learning Python so that I could
create loops and speed up operations on LiDAR data.

It’s normal (or at least expected) for large batches of file to have bugs in
them like missing crs in headers. File transfers can be difficult to handle.
Talk with the provider to see if they have the same issue. If you know a bit
of Python, I could send you a script that reads the LiDAR header directly.

LasPy is a good little library for this
https://laspy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/intro.html#header

You could find tools in WhiteboxTools also.

Re: [Qgis-user] Two LAZ file possible issues iwth some new data we received to processs

2023-02-17 Thread Mike Stanton via QGIS-User
Hi Even, In the project it had “EPSG:4326 – WGS84” for the CRS in the empty
project and after I successfully loaded a few of the files.

I ran a controlled test today that initially ran the full set. Examination of
the results showed that I could load 500 files before the programme showed the
Statistics message in the log. I then setup a test by loading the 500 files
that initially loaded to completion. Then from a clean load of QGIS I added
file/layers one at a time until the error occurred. The test took ~5 individual
files to load before the failure to generate the Statistics file occurred. I
believe that I ran into this once before on another package. It seems there is
a limit that Windows has for the number of files (Number of active Handles
Issue) a process can have open at one time. With the COPC files and the normal
LAZ samples maybe I exceeded that number. More investigation is needed on my
part since I did find some documented limits.

[Qgis-user] What QGIS plugin development should I work on this year?

2023-02-01 Thread Mike Flannigan via QGIS-User

My biggest problem with qgis is handling of layers and groups.
Copying styles from one layer to another (or 10 other layers)
should be easier.  Unchecking (hiding) 20 layers at once
cannot be done by me right now without grouping them.  There
are likely many other examples I can't think of right now.

I see quite a few plugins related to layers, and to be honest
I have not tried them all out.  But so far I have not found the
layer handler I want.

Hi QGIS users,

I am looking for ideas for what QGIS development I should be working on
this year. My plugin development over the years has focused on capabilities
that were missing at the time or algorithms that made QGIS user's lives
easier. Here are the plugins I've developed so far.

https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/author/C%2520Hamilton/

I am interested in algorithms that may be in commercial software but not in
QGIS that people need. I am also interested in different ways to visualize
and analyze data. Last year I released the Density Analysis plugin
<https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/densityanalysis/>. It added additional
density analysis algorithms including a fast H3 histogram of an area. I
never got any feedback on the plugin so I don't know whether it is
useful or not to users, but it has had 11,608 downloads since last June. I
always appreciate feedback as it is what encourages me to continue
development.

I have been debating on updating the D3 Data Visualization plugin
<https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/d3datavis/> to use plotly to create the
graph and perhaps add additional graphs. That was one of my early plugins
where I created my own D3 graph of the data. It could probably be done
better.

Are there any algorithms that you would like to have developed? It may be
that QGIS is getting sufficiently advanced that there is not much that is
really needed any more, but if you have any ideas I would appreciate them.
Anything I work on needs to benefit a sizable number of users. It can't be
too specific. It also needs to be constrained enough that I can complete in
a reasonable amount of time.

If you have any ideas for improving my existing plugins that could be an
option as well.

By the way is there a better forum than this qgis-user group to reach out
to QGIS users or is this the best way?

Thanks for your input!

[Qgis-user] Less Ambiguous Legends for Continuous/Gradient Variables

2023-01-03 Thread Mike Treglia via QGIS-User
Hi All,

Happy New Year! Quick question that has come up various times, and never
asked here for some reason:

With legends for continuous variables, as generated by QGIS, the values for
class boundaries tend to be a bit ambiguous, in that its not clear whether
a unit with that value would fall in the upper or lower bin of data due to
how the numbers are represented. For example, with a 2-class legend as
follows, this might be the case:
0-1
1-2

Confusion could be avoided by using more precise values and adjusting the
bins (possible in QGIS by unlinking class boundaries and manually adjusting
ranges) - e.g., it would look like something this:
0.0-0.9
1.0-2.0

Or it could be clarified with different symbology such as below, but I
don't believe this is available in QGIS:
0.0 < x <= 1
1 < x <= 2

Am I missing any way to more automatically address this in QGIS via
existing tools, either built-in or via a Plug-In? I've seen a bug report
on this front, but it looks like its still open (albeit there's a potential
solution within the thread) - https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/29852.

Thanks! Knowing there are so many sharp QGIS users out there, I imagine
others have figured out great approaches that I'm just behind on.

Re: [Qgis-user] multiple csv file import

2022-11-15 Thread Mike Hyslop via Qgis-user
This has been covered in StackExchange:
https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/276590/bulk-csv-to-shapefile-using-ogr2ogr

Determine the correct ogr2ogr syntax for processing one of your .csv files.
If on Windows, issue the command *ls *.csv > files.txt*This will 'list'
all of your csv files but will save them to a text file named *files.txt*.
You can then use Excel to clone your correct command syntax while changing
the input (drawn from files.txt) and output filenames (these can also be
taken from the input filenames). Save the excel sheet as a text file and
feed it to ogr2ogr - it will process each line sequentially until all files
have been converted.

Best,
Mike

Re: [Qgis-user] excessive threads?

2022-07-31 Thread Mike Stanton via Qgis-user
It all depends on the module you are running and whether it effectively uses
the “-multi” option with “all_available_cores” and of course how many cores are
available on your system. Yes it will vary a lot depending on the nature of
the processing and what stage it is in for that particular module. Another
consideration is the Processor model that is on your system and how many
sockets you have active on it. Servers from the so called “Enterprise” class
can support 2-4 processor sockets and those processor sockets can have up to 24
cores on them. A Dell R930 (a 4 socket Motherboard) can support are running
with 96 cores per system with its current socket, the FC630s blades are capable
of 40 cores per system. The use of the “ALL_AVAILABLE_CORES” option will work
on an as needed basis to add cores to the optimum for the workflow modules and
the data characteristics being processed. It gets down to understanding what
is normal for your processor model, how much real memory you have, and the
nature of the application and the data layout to avoid conflicts.

I don't know how many layers I have :-)I can experiment with some

smaller projects.

When I noticed this, I had not tried to use qgis in at least a day.

I did a little bit of quick experimentation using Qgis 3.26 (Buenos Aires) on
Windows 10. The number of threads is all over the place. It does not seem to be
tied to the number of layers in the map, at least in the sense of steady state
(ie, let the app sit idle for a while). Adding layers bumps the thread count,
with shapefiles adding more threads than files in a geopkg. Locally stored
geotiffs are more like a geopkg vector file in terms of threads. But once
things settle down I end up around 20 threads. Interestingly, Help->About
bumped the thread count by 8. Closing a project (not saving) and then opening a
"new" project (no template) bumped another 8 threads for about 30 seconds, then
settled back down.Launching Qgis peaked at 30 threads, then after about it
minute settles down to 14. I suspect this is dependent on which plug-ins I'm
running.

Note these numbers are non-deterministic - Help->About on a fresh start of Qgis
with an empty project jumped from 13 threads to 33, then settled down to 22,
which is different from the previous attempt where there were open layers in
the map.

I'll be interested to hear what drives the thread count to > 150 . None of my
very limited test involved database connections or connections to remote data.
Those might have something to do with it. Maybe layer filters? Complex
rendering (eg, geometry generators)?

ALCON, We are processing data at 4cm resolution from 4000 ft altitude that
gives me a DSM Ortho of about 800 GB -1.3 TB depending on the bit depth. My
folders have a rile count of over 88,000 Tiles @ 2048 X 2048 with a GSD of
~.076 depending on the processing you are doing I am guessing you can get 8-16
tiles per thread when doing a mosaic operation or even an export. No mention of
the tool being used was given, I am doing a lot of reprojects on that file base
I described and if I go into multi-thread mode I know it will kick that number
up.

Again, I am used to what I see from another tool that uses the GDAL Library for
processing and it does get up over 140 threads when it is doing it processing

Mike, would you please explain why the surface area would be related to the
number of threads?

1000 square miles or ~ 250.000 hectares in my units is big but not huge. We
have a 7 million hectare vegetation inventory we're updating now.

Do you have a bunch of small tiles? Are you thinking that 1 tile = 1 thread?

Re: [Qgis-user] excessive threads?

2022-07-30 Thread Mike Stanton via Qgis-user
Yes I see a lot of threads. The more tne merrier, the faster the throughput.

I am running an I9 9980XE with 18 cores. What having the threads running does
is it allows computing to happen while I/O is running in the foreground. To
make most efficient use of multiple threads the workload has to be one that can
be partitioned in neat little buckets so there is no data conflict. A large
Aerial Triangulation or Digital Ortho (Mosaic) operation on image tiles that
were physically separated in memory (Column and Row in memory)would be Ideal
candidates

One thing I found was that for HPC applications Hyperthreading can actually
cost performance and should be turned off. This has been borne out by
benchmarks and can cost as much as 10% of your CPU performance. You are better
just relying on the normal Affinized Core in a multi core processor switching
architecture if it is available to you (supermicro or Dell PowerEdge platforms)
. Hyperthreading is an automatic hardware function switching the active thread
on occurrence of a CPU long wait state. That switch takes time because it
requires a state save. Core switching does too but it is less random requiring
an execution event (I/O or Hard Page Fault) to trigger it.

Yes, I know 157 is not a super large number, and that the limit of 1024 threads
is not tuned for hardware that's good enough to really use qgis.
(For various reasons, partially historical inertia, partially because most
NetBSD people have a computing history that tends towards what today might be
called minimalism, and because NetBSD is used on old hardware and hardware with
very little memory (if it doesn't run in 128 MB we think that's a bug), some of
the default limits are too low.
Obviously when doing big things those limits need to be increased, but it tends
to surface resource usage that's higher than perhaps it should be. This is
aligned with the idea that developers should have to use the programs they are
developing on at laest 10 year old normal hardware to see what it's like.)

My qgis instance has a lot of layers, but many are geopackage, many are
shapefiles, a couple are postgis, a few are online TMS, a few are TIF, and a
few are jp2 tiles. While it takes 20s to start up (machine is
2014 4-core, 24G RAM, 2T SSD), it's fast once started.

I really don't understand:

Thanks, Jurgen! Much appreciated!

I haven't had luck yet, but if I get it to work, will let you all know what
the solution is. From what I've found, it seems like git bash is based on
msys2, and changing "cmd /c" to "cmd //c" lets something run for fetchenv,
but gdal commands are not available after I run it.

Again, much appreciated, and more later if I figure it out!

Re: [Qgis-user] OSGeo4W Shell with Unix-Style Terminal?

2022-07-07 Thread Mike Treglia via Qgis-user
Thanks again, Jürgen,

I appreciate the explanation - this is definitely an area where I can often
figure things out, but am still learning and fumbling my way through it a
bit.

So I've added the below to my profile (from the link you've previously
shared), and I can run 'fetchenv /c/OSGeo4W/bin/o4w_env.bat' from my bash
terminal - and it starts the process, but it either is getting hung up, or
is just taking longer than I anticipated - is it something that does take
some time and I just need to let it run, so be patient? Or am I maybe
missing or need to adjust something else?

If I try to suspend the process (ctrl + z) after a few minutes, I get a
message along these lines:
1 [sig] bash 471! sigpacket::process: Suppressing signal 18 to win32
process (pid 5648)

Then, I can kill that process, and then go through those steps (ctrl + z,
followed by killing the process) once more before it'll close out.

Best,
Mike

Re: [Qgis-user] OSGeo4W Shell with Unix-Style Terminal?

2022-07-07 Thread Mike Treglia via Qgis-user
Thanks, Jürgen, for the quick response! Much appreciated!

I think I might be missing some of the knowledge I need to implement this
for now, which is alright. For example, I'm not sure where I should start
adjusting things in that portion of the build_helpers script, and
where/when I should run that, or if I'm should modify that portion of
build_helpers (ln 107-143) and insert that into /c/OSGeo4W/bin/o4w_env.bat,
such that the OSGeo4W.bat file will call on the desired environment.

Thus, I would definitely value any more insight/guidance on this, and I can
keep working with OSGeo4W in the existing setup for now too if I need
without issue - its honestly more of a convenience item than a necessity.

Thanks again!
Mike

[Qgis-user] OSGeo4W Shell with Unix-Style Terminal?

2022-07-07 Thread Mike Treglia via Qgis-user
Hi All,

First - thanks to the devs and maintainers for their quick work to resolve
the installation snag folks were encountering, and gracefully at that!

There might be a better place to ask this, but thought this might be a good
first spot to try, as I realize there are some OSGeo4W users on this list.

I was hoping to use the OSGeo4W shell from a unix-style terminal - like git
bash or similar. For some things, in the past, I've added the directory
with binaries from the OSGeo4W install to my Windows Environment System
Variables for as a value in Path. However, I've hit snags with gdal
recently, in getting a conflicting proj version, due to a concurrent
install of PostGIS. Thus, I can call gdal tools from the OSGeo4W install
via git bash, for example, but get errors regarding conflicting proj
versions.

The Windows style OSGeo4W Shell works as expected, so I can definitely use
that as is, but figured I'd see if there's a best way to do what I'm
looking for.

Best,
Mike

I recently released the Density Analysis plugin and today I had a new
update that provides a polygon raster density analysis algorithm along with
a processing algorithm to style the raster with a heatmap.

https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/densityanalysis/

I have a very narrow window in which I can make updates to this plugin. It
meets my needs, but perhaps you might see something I have missed. I am
being reassigned from QGIS development to other projects. Unfortunately, a
certain company, who shall not be named, has ultimately prevailed even
though it is really expensive and QGIS free. I will be allowed to fix bugs
in my plugins, but no new development.

If anyone has any comments or would like something done a little
differently with the Density Analysis plugin please let me know now. Next
month, unless it is a bug, I won't be allowed to make any changes.

It has been a pleasure working with the QGIS community. You are all great.
I will miss being able to spend full time working with QGIS. Hopefully, my
contributions have provided you with some useful tools.

I wish you all the very best!

[Qgis-user] Adding a point file to QGIS version 3.16.16-Hannover (WIN 7)

2022-05-29 Thread Mike Breiding - Morgantown WV via Qgis-user

Greetings,
I am trying to add a point file (.shp) to a project.
I get this dialog:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/kUtkF8R1FdsBZTNW7

If I choose any of the :Geometry Type" options the file is added but not
points are not displayed.

The data source is here:
https://data.wvgis.wvu.edu/pub/Clearinghouse/location/populatedPlaces_USGS_198105_utm83_shp.zip

What must be done to add this data to the project?

Thanks,

That's correct in my experience. In the OSGeo4W installer, go through the
advanced install menu, and when you get the options for libraries, I think
searching for gdb should bring up the right one - then check the box and
proceed.

I neglected to mention the use for the distribution maps.
They will be used in a print brochure.
A page mock up can be seen here:

The USA distribution map in the mock up was made in Qgis using the

This is interactive and will display down to the state and county level.
However, they are not up to date at the state/county level. If they were

The state distribution map used in the mock up was made using Qgis based
on data from the West Virginia University Herbarium which has the most

Taken as a database design question,
the idea of having 100 columns to record the presence or
absence of each species is not elegant.  A more normalized
approach would be to have your geometry table (geometry of
counties and unique key, perhaps county name) and a
separate table with multiple rows per county, one for each
species present, along with the county unique key, and
then a one-to-many table join between the two.

  Of course this doesn't necessarily
help with the business of visualizing the data...

Nicolas has suggested:
I assume you have a layer with the county boundaries. Export
this layer as a CSV file, keeping only the name of each county
in the export step, and don't export the geometry.
Now open this file in your spreadsheet app of choice.
Add a new column for each plant species.
Put a one in that column for each county where the species is
present.
Save the file (still as CSV).

Open the county layer and the new CSV files in Ggis.
Open the properties window for the county layer and click on the
Joins tab.
Click on the "+" to add a new join. Join to the CSV layer, and
select the county names field as the join field for each.

Now your county layer has the plant species column.
To display a single species, open the properties window for the
county layer, select symbology. Set the symbology as rule based.
To color just those counties with species 1, your rule would say
something like Species1 = 1, where Species1 is the field name
you used. Pick a color/transparency of your choice, then set the
"all others" rules to be the background color you want.

That does it for one species. You can then export to tiff or
whatever. Getting it to cycle through all the different species
is for someone else to explain.

[Qgis-user] Automating creation of county distribution maps

2022-03-09 Thread Mike Breiding - Morgantown WV via Qgis-user

Greetings,
I want to create distribution maps by county occurrence for plant
species found in West Virginia.

What I hope is possible is to load all the county names where a specific
species occurs and then have a county map of West Virginia generated
with the counties where the species occurs shaded to a particular grey
shade and transparency.

And, while I am wishful thinking it would then be nice to have the
output saved to a new layer and then made to a tiff file. All automated
a much as possible.

If I do this manually I have to load the county outline and read a list
of county occurrence and then select each one , save to a new layer,
choose the shading color and transparency and then take a screen shot of
the map area.

NOTE: I am newbie so if someone comes up with a way to do this I may or
may not understand what they are talking about.

I followed your instructions and changed the Project projection

relates to the shape of the USA.

Mike,
QGIS operates on two levels: The data
level and the visualization level. If you added your US
outline to QGIS it will automatically show it to you in the
projection the data is in. If all you need is to create an
output that looks like it is in a different projection you
can change the projection of the project. This is done in
Project>Project Properties>CRS. Or look in the bottom
right hand corner for the image that looks like a world with
a hat and click to bring up the projection dialog. If you
need the actual data to be in a different projection right
click on the layer and select Export>Save Features As and
in the dialog select the desired reference system (CRS).

Here is handout I created going over
this in more detail https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-FJtKGP1b2xDgswvZ3sUmAqff9S1zQS6/view?usp=sharing

Hi!
I am setting up a Geodata stack. I have installed PostgreSQL/Postgis and
Geoserver under Tomcat9 and FME:d a lot of data to PostGIS. All is up and
running.
Then I installed QGIS 3.20. No problems so far. Then I decided to try QGIS
server as an alternative to Geoserver. But I am having trouble configuring
QGIS server, or Apache2 rather.
Over the past 5-6 years, I have spent more time and energy than I care to
mention trying to make QGIS server run on Windows servers. Asking for
advice on those occasions, I have more than once got the advice to use
Linux instead, since no QGIS developers really know Windows servers. And
Linux would be much easier.
Fair enough. So now I am on Ubuntu, sudoing this and that and it works
pretty well.
Apart from QGIS server. I find the same mess of incomplete or contradictory
instructions. No wonder QGIS server is under-used.
If Linux(Ubuntu) is so simple, how come no one has put together a working
script to configure and deploy QGIS server on a standard setup?
I am most disappointed, having spent yet 5 hrs that I will never get back
on QGIS server.

No, it's not a single click operation (qgis has no way to know how many

checking multiple layers in those interfaces.

I often use the "select all" option and use the CTRL+click to deselect
unwanted layers. That makes it quicker when selecting the majority of large
layer collections.

You can then add them to a group or drag their order on the ToC, but to
toggle all layer visibility you will need to use the hide/ show selected

You cannot determine the UTM zone from a coordinate pair, as UTM
coordinates repeat across the 60 world zones. Can you ask the collaborator

could then determine the zone by using a layer such as this:

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.16 Installation on Linux Mint

Those instructions are what brought up this issue.
Apparently
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian `lsb_release -c -s`
main"

is good for Ubuntu, but not Linux Mint.  For LM use this instead:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main"

Right now I am using QGIS quite a bit and I can't do with out.
When I get a break I will try to get the QGGIS version 3.16
on the LM Software Manager to install.  If that doesn't work I
will follow the QuickStart procedure modified to bionic.

I have used those QuickStart procedures successfully in the past.

Thanks for this information.
I wish I could execute the 3.16.1 QGIS that Synaptic thinks I have.
I will probably uninstall via Synaptic and try to reinstall.

Thanks.  I am using the Flatpak ver 3.10.12 out of the LM

it works great.  The problem is, my Update Manager keeps

Thanks so much.
'/etc/upstream-release/lsb-release' contains:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=bionic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04 LTS"

So that sure does answer #2 - at least the Ubuntu part of it.
System Info lists OS: "Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon".  Sure wish
they had "tricia" listed there too.

Oops.  /etc/os-release does list Tricia (and tricia):

NAME="Linux Mint"
VERSION="19.3 (Tricia)"
ID=linuxmint
ID_LIKE=ubuntu
PRETTY_NAME="Linux Mint 19.3"
VERSION_ID="19.3"

BUG_REPORT_URL="http://linuxmint-troubleshooting-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/;
PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://www.linuxmint.com/;
VERSION_CODENAME=tricia
UBUNTU_CODENAME=bionic

Thanks so much for your help.

I guess this is the best I found on the internet:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_version_history
Except you would use "Bionic Beaver" if you referenced that.

The Linux Mint history:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint_version_history
is also not exactly right.
We Linux people know that Tricia ne tricia.
Lots of holes to fall into when doing this stuff.

2020-12-02 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate the response.
Sure sounds like an area that could use some improvement.
I suspect there is a good reason why Linux Mint (LM) 19.3
cannot be called bionic instead of tricia.  So first question
is how do I cross reference names and numbers (i.e. Ubuntu
bionic = 18.04).  I did some looking.  Is LXR needed for that?
I also went into 'Release' and 'InRelease' on that website, but
could not cross reference bionic to 18.04.

Second question is how do I cross reference between Ubuntu and LM?
i.e. LM 19.3 tricia is based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.

I'm still looking.  I will report this if I find it.

precise... wow that's 12.04 which has been unsupported since 2017.
Well anyway.

Not to mention the Debian users which have the selection of buster,
jessie, stretch, trusty and unstable.

Not to mention the Mint users using Ulyana which is AFAIK based on
Ubuntu 20.04 (focal)?

So probably hardcoding it to refer only to the Ubuntu 18.04 / bionic

cause a lot of surprise to quite a lot of users.

Also please remember that there are lots of other Ubuntu (and Debian)

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.16 Installation on Linux Mint

2020-12-01 Thread Mike Flannigan

Linux Mint (LM) is a fork of Ubuntu, so LM users
normally use the Ubuntu install commands located here:
https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#debian-ubuntu

The command on that website that has given me problems is
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian `lsb_release -c -s`
main"

People who know more than me say that `lsb_release -c -s` returns
"tricia", which is unknown to the QGIS repo.  Only the Linux Mint repo
knows the LM 19.3 nickname tricia. The rest of the world needs to be
given the Ubuntu nickname bionic instead, because LM 19.3 tricia is
based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.  So they tell me to change that command to
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main".
That worked for me.

"So what" you may say.  We say it is for Debian and Ubuntu, not LM.
That is true, but there are apparently more Mint users than either
Ubuntu or Debian users:
https://distrowatch.com/

I just wonder if that line should be changed to
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main"

If not, then maybe there is another way to correct this problem for
LM users.

Re: [Qgis-user] Toggle Attribute

2020-11-23 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thank you.  I did get an Action to operate today.  My action also
uses a Google Maps link.

I can click on "Identify Features", which opens a "Identify Results"
panel.  Then I can click on a feature in that layer, open Actions
in the "Identify Results" panel, and click on the action, which
runs the action.

Now I'm trying to make the action more accessible.  Am I correct
in my assumption that the button just to the right of "Identify Features"
should list my Action in the dropdown list?  So list stuff like this:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/action1.jpg
Figure 5 was taken from:
https://www.geodose.com/2018/04/qgis-tutorial-how-to-create-action.html

When I click on that little black triangle on the button just to the right
of "Identify Features" it shows an empty, white box.  When I click on the
button is doesn't do anything.  When I hover over the button it says
"no action selected".

Ideally I would like for the action to run if I just click on the feature.

Hi Mike,

Just create an action with something like this to see it in action:

https://www.google.pt/maps/@[% @click_x %],[% @click_y %]

This will open google maps at the place you clicked. If you want to get
something from the action called, you have to capture its output (and
return the right value from your script).

As Richard said, start with the default actions and you will see
different kinds of things that can be done with actions. Capturing the
clicked X,Y is straight forward.

You can always go into the plugin settings and specify which order you want

order is only applicable the first time you install "Lat Lon Tools" or if
you do a reset to defaults in the Lat Lon Tools settings menu,

Who prefers Lat Lon Tools to default to "longitude, latitude" or "X, Y"

Who prefers Lat Lon Tools to default to "latitude, longitude (Google map

I'm just checking to see if I should make this change or not.

I am no longer OK.  Apparently the TimeShift back

available to me is this short list:

All I can figure is most QGIS users don't use plugins
(not likely) or this problem is affecting less than
10% of QGIS users.  Otherwise I suspect this would be the
biggest issue discussed on the list.  I don't even know
what to work on - QGIS or Python.

I am on QGIS version 3.14.16-Pi.  I guess I will go forward -
to ver 3.16.0 at first, then backwards if necessary.  I would
welcome a 3.16.0 user who does not have this problem to
state that on this list.  I welcome any suggestions.

I am on Linux Mint 19.3.

Ignoring the error message allows QGIS to start, but then
you don't have the "Lat Lon Tools" plugin, and a few other things.

My Python versions appear to be ver 2.7, ver 3.6, ver 3.7.

Again, I am OK for now, but I hope this issue is resolved soon.

2020-10-29 Thread Mike Flannigan

Wow.  Clear as mud, heh?

I want to learn this with you, even though I don't have
a great need for it yet.

Does this video help?
https://freegistutorial.com/how-to-create-a-geopackage-on-qgis-3-2/

I honestly don't know because I haven't tried it yet.
But I don't like that you have to select Line Feature, or
Polygon feature, or whatever.  Seems like we just want one
geopackage for everything, right?

Re: [Qgis-user] Problems creating an HTML web map of my project

2020-10-26 Thread Mike Flannigan

I'm not a whole lot of help, but here is what I can
tell you.

A qgis2web export worked for me on
Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon
QGIS 3.10.10
GDAL  version may be 2.2
Python 2.7.17
8 GB RAM

I turned off QuickMapServices.  If you need that on, let me know.
It created a 43MB directory.

The delay was about 10-15 seconds, so you might want to let
yours run for more than 3 minutes.

I could upload this thing if you need to see it.

Re: [Qgis-user] Road Labels

2020-10-22 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thank you Thayer and Richard.

The Openrouteservice.org GUI map did not work for
my Firefox.

Graphhopper is nearly perfect for what I want, and
I really appreciate you bringing it to my attention.
It's going to save me quite a bit of time.
This is the link I am using:
https://graphhopper.com/maps/

The GPX export of the track is exactly what I need.
The GUI is great.  I rarely have more than a dozen
intermediary points along the track, so I'll probably
just create the URL I need to get the output I need.
Or maybe I will dive into the API, but I hate these
API keys that always seem to be turned off, and I'm
supposed to beg for another one.

QuickOSM appears to have a lot of promise too.
It's on my list to investigate.

Thanks again.

  Hi Mike,
I am glad this helped you.
I am going to punt on this since a similar question about how to do routes in
QGIS was asked recently, and I think it received some answers, you should be
able to find it on the QGIS-user Nabble archive.
That said, my initial thought is that instead of using Google you might want to
do your routing on websites or API's that are based directly on OSM data, for
example Graphhopper or Openrouteservice.org that will allow you to export
routes as GPX. You can then use Douglas Peuker to simplify. If you are looking
for a more automated way of doing this you may want to dig into the API's for
those sites.

Re: [Qgis-user] Road Labels

2020-10-22 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thanks for this procedure Thayer.
I use Overpass Turbo to plot tracks along roads.  It is somewhat
of a complicated process, but it works.  Perhaps I should be
using QGIS to do this instead.

But since I currently reply on the Overpass Turbo website, I am
looking for an alternate website that does the same thing.  I want
to prepare for the day when Overpass Turbo disappears (or moves).

So this email is a 2 part question.

1) Are there any other websites that do what the Overpass Turbo website
does?

2) Do you have any suggestions on a better way to get a track plot along
roads, when you feed the program just a few vertexes along the road route?

My convoluted procedure to get tracks along roads is shown below.

Mike

THE New Procedure for Tracks is:

Create a text file with DD lat/longs that looks like this:
38.891953, -94.714428
39.961945, -95.788242
42.263043, -96.481528
42.874940, -97.140297
43.095141, -98.332987

This is generally created from taking each point from Google Maps.

Then run googmaptrack.pl to create a google maps URL like this:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/38.891953,-94.714428/39.961945,-95.788242/42.263043,-96.481528/42.874940,-97.140297/43.095141,-98.332987

Paste that URL into a browser and make sure it is the correct route.
If not, add more intermediary points to correct the route.

Then run trackosrm.pl to create a bunch of terminal commands that
curl an OSRM URL like this:
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-104.062500,46.498392;-94.714428,38.891953?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout01.txt

Paste the whole string of terminal commands into a terminal to create
all the procoutXX.txt files.

Then use trackosrm2.pl to process those procoutXX.txt files
to extract all of the node numbers to nodes.txt.  It will
create an output that looks like this:

[out:json];
(
  node(77927832);
  node(77927830);
  node(77927828);
  node(77927826);
);
(._;>;);
out;

YOU NEED TO ADD THOSE FIRST 2 LINES AND LAST 3 LINES.

Then paste all those nodes and to this website:
http://overpass-turbo.eu/

Hit the Run button at the upper left.

Then hit the "Data" tab at the upper right and copy and paste the data
supplied

into a file like latlong.txt.

Use garminfile.pl to extract the lat/longs to TopoUSA format.

Unfortunately, curl does not keep the items in order.  So we need
to change the trackosrm.pl 'out' file above that looks like this:
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.799440,37.663330;-118.592720,37.671850?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout01.txt
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.592720,37.671850;-116.855740,38.125510?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout02.txt

and change it to this:

firefox
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.799440,37.663330;-118.592720,37.671850?alternatives=false=nodes'
firefox
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.592720,37.671850;-116.855740,38.125510?alternatives=false=nodes'

by using this:
find /home/mike/Documents/copy3 -maxdepth 1 -type f -iname
"track2_out.txt" -exec grep -il -Z "driving" {} \; | xargs -0 perl
-i.bak -pnwe 's/curl\s(.*) >.*/firefox $1/g'

Then copy each firefox command into the terminal and copy the web page
output

into an 'order.txt' file, remove the beginning and ending lines, so we only
have the node lines.  Then do a search and replace - search for
"^\d+\s+" and

replace with nothing.

So order.txt has nothing but node numbers (in order) in it.

Then use trackorder.pl to reorder all the procout.txt files created above.

Then use trackreduce.pl to reduce the number of points with the Douglas
- Peucker algorithm.

Then use geojson.pl to create a geojson file to use in QGIS to see what
the track looks like.

  Hi Wanda,
There are ways of filtering Open Street Map data before you download it, so the
processing is done on the server not on your computer, so that should help you
avoid crashes in QGIS.
One way to do this is with Overpass Turbo (https://overpass-turbo.eu) to select
all of the roads in the map view.
Overpass Turbo
0) Close applications that you do not need, and open a web browser.1) Go to the Overpass Turbo website and use the search and zoom controls
to adjust the map to your area of interest. 2) Then copy and paste the sample query into the text area to the left side of the map window.
3) Then click on the "Run" button at the top left.4) After it runs for a while it will probably say "Large Amounts of
Data"  and ask you if you want to continue, click "continue anyway".     Rockford indeed is small and does not have this
problem, but Grand Rapids for example gives 30 MB of data, 60 MB may cause an error.5) Click on Export (third button from the left at the
top). 6)

For measuring the kind of distances you are mentioning I would suggest using
ellipsoidal (geodetic) distances rather than projected distances. This is
because projected distances can become very inaccurate over large regions
(depending on the particular projection of course).

If measuring areas is important consider an equal area projection, like Albers
for example, not a conformal one like Lambert.

Hope this helps.

I changed the local repository and still get the

My ver 3.10.10 works fine, so this is not a big

I successfully updated my main machine to ver 3.14
more than a month ago, so perhaps this is just a
recent error that has developed.
