[Ql-Users] Regarding this Great QL Today Final DVD
Hi all dear QL users, As it is said in page 47 of the latest issue of QL Today there is sometimes some problems/lag with certain DVD readers (or mainly both readers/burners). This issue occurs often when DVD are produced in small numbers of copie and there is few DVD that are 100% compatible. In fact, this problem is depending of the multiplication of standard that can be used all over the world. In few words, finally I succeed to get it working by plugin an external generic DVD reader in USB-2 and making an ISO image of it. Symptoms met are, sometimes lag when watching photos, or difficulties to copy certain files randomly. So I'm thinking if it should be an idea to share that ISO image to QL community or with a password to people who buy the latest issue of QLToday, as I'm sure that the content of this DVD is right to be stored in the great QL history. I'm exploring the DVD. I've got both QPC2 and SMSQmlator (Java7 on Vista) running. SMSQmulator runs fine directly from the DVD but not much use with read-only filesystem. I copied all the files from DVD to a folder and ran it from there but keep getting this message: Can't read SMSQ/E file! : java.io.IOException: The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file. I'm launching it by opening the folder and double-clicing the .jar file. The error happens even if I restart the computer and it is the first thing I run. No problems with QPC2 but the best display quality results in a tiny QL window within the QPC window - I can scale it up by setting the bottom resolution (under 'Window mode' checkbox) higher than that of the top resolution, but this usually results in a reduction in quality. Good fun playing, but I must drag myself away to tidy up and get dinner started before wife comes home from work and I go out to mine! Re: [Ql-Users] Fw: A runtime version of QPC2?
Hi all, I'm will be please to help and to open SVN source code repository to anyone who help us to develop this such of features on QL2K. I haven't the knowledge to develop QDOS drivers, but we can do many things to the emulator parts. So developing floppy support and/or support of QXL WIN file should be great. After this, I'm thinking to handling TCP/IP support. If QPC2 were freely available at no cost the difficulties of the demo version would, of course, disappear. How could a free version of QPC2 be possible? I would guess that not many copies, if any, of QPC2 will be sold in the future. That being so, it might be worth while offering Marcel a sum of money in place of these. This could be attractive to Marcel if he reckoned that it was worth more than he would get from the future sales. It would, I suggest, be of interest to the present body of QLers in that it may well attract new users and give the QL a new lease of life. Where would the money come from? Again I have a suggestion. It seems that QUANTA have some funds which they have considered using on projects. If that is still the case then freeing QPC2 would be a project to be considered. George Approaches to Quanta would depend on proper business case propositions being written and a formal approach made to Quanta. I'm not sure it would involve an amount Quanta could afford - obviously I don't know what QPC2 sales are like at the moment. Alternatives might be: 1. Getting a floppy disk driver written for QLay2 or QL2K, as that is already a free QDOS emulator. 2. There is a chap in the Netherlands (can't remember his real name, he goes under the moniker of Zeccie on QL Forum) who is developing a Java-based QL emulator. I don't know what progress (if any) he's made on this, but it would be a nice easy way of running QL software in a Java-capable browser. 3. When it comes to running older software, a QDOS QL emulator might be a better choice, especially QemuLator as that can run with either QDOS ROMs or SMSQ/E. I wonder if there's any mileage in persuading Daniele to do a runtime only free or low cost QemuLator which ran programs without the ability to save much? QemuLator can run at QL speed (for old games), has a range of memory sizes and so on. And can even run software direct from a QLPAK or Zipped file. Just some ideas plucked out of thin air to extend this discussion... [Ql-Users] QL2K website now repaired.
Hi All, Some QL2K users have seen that there is some malfunctions with the help page of QL2K. That wasn't a problem of QL2K itself but this was a problem with my website architecture. I finally solved this small but multiple problems by changing many stuffs on this architecture. That was not so easy because there is a lot of things to manage together between internet supplier, hosting services, firewall, networking, software, routing, referencing, moving sites and so on... The long time of this resolution was mainly due to lack of spare time too. There is some small others changes that will occur in the near future but there will not have major dysfunction anymore. For example, we are thinking to rebuild completely the website to a new more attractive design. I'm apologize for problems generated. I'm very pleased that JADIAM resources have increased to solved parts of the problematic. Cheers, Jimmy. ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Re: [Ql-Users] Asus EeePc
Hi, I have an EEE PC, and I make run it run QL2K on a heavy modded EEE PC. This is sure that EEE PC is very little but as I choose a black model, something on it recall me the ZX81 ;-) We have made some modification on QL2K to be more suitable with its particular screen resolution 800x480 in GDI mode. DirectDraw mode already works perfectly. This will be available in the next release of QL2K (which is under validation). We will release sound emulation too which can play a SuperBasic command like BEEP 5,100 ;-) We have made important mods on the EEE PC 4G by : - Adding a touchscreen, - Adding a Bluetooth screen internally, - Adding 2 internal 32 GB USB keys, - Adding a very small USB HUB inside, - Installing MS Windows XP and ESET Antivirus. In this case we are very very far of its initial low price. But I've not done this only for QL2K but for my activity : as an ultra light PC is very usefull. (We're thinking to add a 3G+ key or something equivalent). So for activities like training, maintenance, commercial this may be a good solution if you are agree to break ASUS warranty... As we develop an pseudo-KVM I'm plan to use it as a remote controller of my Media Center. I just try QPC2 and it works very well both in windows or full screen mode. I was very surprise by its performance. It build on a celeron base but by tweaking it a little (putting it's FSB à 100 MHz instead of its original 70 MHz) it's reactivity it very acceptable and you can play at TrackMania Nations without any problem (still on Windows). I have used a little it's original OS called Xandros (derivate of Debian Distribution). It work correctly but I still need Windows for the moment. Now it's sure that releasing QL2K under Unix it's a too heavy work for me. Finally I don't recommand the EEE PC for a daily use as Norman say it. It is just fun to use it. If you are a 10-finger touch-typist, forget the eeePC - you won't fit them on the keyboard all together. I'm pretty sure a new bigger model is coming 'soon' - which is apparently not 'soon' as in Sinclair speak - with more memory, more storage and a bigger screen. Because it comes with Linux installed it has been quite a popular subject in the Linux magazines, everyone loves it, says how great it is except for the small screen and keyboard. Re: [ql-users] win98se
Hi Dilwyn, Limitation are come from MS-DOS and not really Windows 98 SE. Using FAT16 (If you don't specify in FDISK you want large partition) you can format partition of a size a few less than 4 GB. With cluster size = 64Kb - FAT 16 is 2^16 cluster - Partition size is : 4 GB. After this, you may encounter some BIOS limitation on few machines (if it's very very old). FAT 12 is only used on floppies. The limitation of FAT 12 is for partition up to 256 MB FAT32 (is you said to FDISK you want large partition) is for partition up to ( 2^28 * 4K !! ) = 8 GB. So the limitation is 4 GB in FAT16 with cluster of 64 KB ( not recommended ) And 8 GB in FAT32 with 4K Clusters and up to 32GB. But be carefull a FAT32 partition isn't recoverable with an MS-DOS floppy disk. Yours answers are interesting, and Per as made an article that can teach simply on how it's possible to make a virus. See www.witteware.com/knoware : 2007/02/12 Addition | Virus - Article and listing: Anatomy of a virus. New. Now I will consider that is possible to get viruses on QL, but at this time there is no real virus on QL instead of there is some on PC, Amiga, ... I please to see that on QL there is no virus and hope there is no in the future. I will use the example of Per (if Per is agree of course) for my presentation at the side of a program of us that stealth browsed URL behind Internet Explorer, and another program that can shutdown without any wait a computer. Adrian Dickens in his QL Advanced User Guide shows how to set up a self-cloning program. (See 4.4.2) His program drew a set of coloured blobs across the screen. This went on until one of the blob sets hit the edge of the screen at which time all the programs committed suicide. This is not strictly a virus since you yourself have to start it going in the first place, but it gives an indication of what can be done. Re: [ql-users] Spare GC or SGC?
Instead of building new hardware, reuse very common old hardware which is easy to find on places such as eBay... i.e. Amiga 1200 etc. Yes I'm agree, this sound OK. But I searching an Amiga 1200 with a french keyboard, and it's difficult to find one. Now, if someone could write a version of QDOS etc. for that platform which could be burned onto ROM (the Amiga ROMs are easy to access and replace) that would give the community an easy route for an upgrade without a massive cost for the hardware. This may take a while. But as the Amiga already have a QL emulator, a port of QDOS may be facilitate. And if I have an Amiga 1200, I want to use both Amiga and QL on it. (The Amiga 1200 has a built-in IDE interface and an internal floppy drive. It also has reasonable 2D graphics performance, ample for the QL-like display. Oh, and much of the original AmigaDOS was written by Metacomco in BCPL on Sinclair QLs. :-) Maybe it's pay-back time?) Sure. I'm asking to myself if the new AmigaOne (based on PPC) should by more suitable. But much more harder on development. I'm thinking that like many tentative made around all these new projects needs both persons who worked on them and money. The rentability of such of projects are very difficult to be reached. I need a 68K compatible platform to execute both QL, Amiga, Linux68K and others, ..., but Q40/Q60 lets us watch that is expensive to get this kind of system. And complete and running systems need plenty of time to be integrated and installed (I guess as I dont't have one). There is a lot of emulators that's work well on PC. So I frequently used QPC or WinUAE. Currently I'm working to create my own company and I searching if there is a way to put into market this such of computers... And the only one response I really find is that without an heavy investment we cannot get a large selling 68K computer that make it cheap. As I think that work around SMS/Q and Q40/Q60 are still active, I want to earn a lot of money in order to buy to system with the suite of softwares. I saw a lot of software I want to get, but prices are too expensive for me at this time. And it's hard to see a lot of utilities that give you pretty desktop in high resolution on QL... After this I still hesitate to buy some hardware because when I saw products description, it's a bit difficult to make an opinion on certain products. For example, I need to modify one of my 4 QL black box to get an speedy serial port to make him communicate with a PC. In that case the solution may be Hermes/ SuperHermes Lite or SuperHermes (between 82 to 140 euros) and I pretty sure that just buying this is not sufficient to get it up and running (I think I have to build a cable, make a new box or put the QL in a tower case, find a keyboard and...) An all of this just in order to save some software from destruction (for exemple - I recently lose VROOM as the cartridge is now dead and I don't know how to hack the protection - I had saved the files but not the original cartridge. And what if the strategy to follow : 1. Using QXL/QXL2 - This is a ISA card, should be now usefull to get it now in PCI Express or PCI format ? 2. QL with extensions - Well at this time this mean QL + SGC + Aurora + Mplane + a new tower box, some hours ... 3. Emulation. Well QPC is very attractive but now I had to know what's software to use (I want to use a C compiler, Basic Compiler and ...) 4. Q40/Q60 .. Yes a day certainly when I will have increased my knowledge on QL And for what ? I still don't know ;-) So now, and it's because I cannot say count me in for the new SGC for exemple is that I need the help of a QL Master Expert Consultant in order to understand all of this. In fact I just need what : Preserve my old programs and games from destruction and program in S*Basic (with compilation) and in C on QL. The suite QD+Qbasic+Qliberator is about 106 euros and C68 seems to be hard to install ;-) I thinking onto rewrite completely my website to create a dedicated zone for the QL where anyone can publish articles in order to create an QL Advanced Wiki for Technical and Newbies - And not in english only ;-) !!! Re: [ql-users] A QL Trip Down Memory Lane
Well we have the same problems at school, college and university in France... And I don't know about you all, but what I do with my son (recently 6 years old) is we are working together some computing courses. At this time we are working on ORIC with commands like : PRINT 2+3=; 2+3 SHOOT, EXPLODE or PING and so one. And he already knows how to deal properly with CLS or RUN commands. My daughter (5 years old) want to do the same when she was able to read and write. It other he have to be familiar with both the keyboard and the BASIC syntax he asking me for small listing of programs in order he typed it on ORIC. (Well it's an ATMOS as the ORIC 1 have a keyboard that is quite hard to use by childs). In a few time we will work on QL, I'm working on the restoration on his own QL. What's he true too, that is my childs sayed that QL, ORIC and Amiga computers are pretty. The PC is without this think that made these others so attractive. Finally, he prefer work on that such of old computers instead of his own PC where there is a lot of games or so but where creativity is not so easy to make in action. So I definitively agree with you when computer history should be learned at ITC or equivalent courses. Fair enough. Do you teach ICT then? Snap, although I am a part-time lecturer on loan from business!!! At the local college at which I teach they insist on calling it Information Communications Technology . . . hence the ICT. However, the function of ICT in a educational environment is no different from IT in a business environment . . . they are both using technology to achieve a purpose. I have no problem with software investment going into PC applications. What I find disappointing is that in many schools/colleges it is purely a Microsoft environment and that students have no concept of the history and development of ICT. That, in my view, is a real shame. Even in programming, the concentration seems to be totally on Visual Basic - with all the bad habits that gives us - without considering the huge variety of better cross-platform languages. Oh well, that's life, I guess! RE: [ql-users] Virus [OT]
Well virus protection and firewalling are must have protection to preserve PC computers for all operating systems. At my outside job, that taking quite all my time !, we are working on computer security. For guideline I can now say that : - One anti-virus tools is a must have on a single computer environnement (please read below about task list that are periodically done on a computer). - At least two different anti-virus are must have in any multiples computers environnement. And I want to talk specifically off one Anti-Virus : SOPHOS. (http://www.sophos.com/ and http://www.sophos.com/products/sav/) It's not a product with a nice look and fell but is it very performant : - About 22 kind of platforms supported (where it can be executed) - Knows 100160 differents viruses (at date : 2005-Feb-07) - It's filter technology is one of the quicker of the antivirus market, so applications aren't hanging because of antivirus activity. - It's an UK Company - Sophos got 3 research lab around the world in order to work 24h and 7 days a week. In front of this there is some concerns : - This antivirus software is reserve for professionnal or special OEM and costs per server (with 10 clients PC's included) for 300+ - Don't check internally in applications with plug-in (For emails products and so on). There is too another and free for personnal use antivirus that include a lot of good thinks that is AVAST 4 (http://www.avast.com) ( It includes firewall, plugin for email client, and act as a normal antivirus too, etc... ) It's a very good products for no costs instead of registration (I don't know about emails but you can use a one-time email to receive The registration key ;-) . Tools needs to be protected against Internet : -- - Firewall that can be used in two ways : - Simple IP flow filtering : Just open TCP or UDP flow that are really need for DMZ (formelly for mails servers, web serveurs,VPN Servers). - Using PROXY services for all client applications that have to be used over Internet (Instant messaging, Web explorer, Voice on IP, etc... ( Firewall technologies can be replace by a high secure Operating Systems installations as I done it at home where I got a secured installation of Windows 2000 - But this is a huge work of installations (from 5 to 15 days) and can be attack in case of security hole) - Patch management : Yes, that one the most important thing to do in security matter for both Windows and Unix Systems ! I don't want to make any comments on the reasons that justify patch management but security hole are always possible in any operating systems. For Windows PC you can use Microsoft Windows Update Server (or Software Updates Server) in order to centralise updates in order to deploy them in your LAN or private WAN. - AntiSpam : I'm using email server at a specialist of hosting (http://www.ovh.com) where there is an anti-spam and anti-virus solution on server side. - Anti Spyware : Here is some tools like AdAware or Spybot (it's very recommended to use theses tools are there is often problems on downloaded programs. ( Microsoft has selling out a beta version of his new anti-spyware programs made after a new company acquisition. ) - Using a secure Web Browser : Since SP2, Internet Explorer is a bit more secure but not efficiently as MyIE2 (which encapsulate IE but with an effective protection) May Firefox will be very efficient in that case but it's a very yound product and it still have to enforce security as 3 holes has been discovered recently. - Using a proxy server (for multiple PC) with flow proxy filter that stop some unwanted stuffs. - Test before use : Download and install programs is not recommanded if you want your PC works perfectly : You may test and validate the software you use in order to check integrety and compatibility before use it in production environment. This is now easily possible with emulation and virtual machines !!! ( I have to test bochs x86, but I already done some work with both Virtual PC and VMWare Workstation ) ( as well as Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and VMWare GSX and ESX Servers ). For more information you can check out for bochs : http://bochs.sourceforge.net/ Well, there is no perfect security solutions, and getting a full security environment is simply to not be wired to the internet as well as to not getting WIFI ! But using methods to secure part by part an Information System is not only using tools but human brain too. It now time to say that getting an high security environment wired to Internet is very very difficult. Major people that are connected to Internet got viruses and malware on their machines. Spending time to correct them costs plenty of time. Since 2 years now, we traverse a period that are dramatic regarding security. Editors made security corrections but often too
