What, AVG is a nasty virus?

Didn't know it appended THAT signature! At least you can tell what came from
home and what from work.

It's geared up for people with always-on connections. Dial up users have to
force it to update unless they happen to be online when AVG7 reckons it's time
to update. It normally tries to update every 2 days and normally has downloads
of anything from 150K to 2MB of updates every time.

Our Symantec one here at work has the habit of popping up to do updates just
when it's busiest, just like Windows updates.

Never quite sure if drinking during breakfast is OK, but I always seem

Hilary is fine, and still in that HUGE Castle, all on his own. Still
beavering away with his Gold Card QL - I call on him when I visit my
parents. I think hes on email still -

Hilaryokelly AT hotmail DOT com

He has written some amazing QL programs, and I'm sick nagging him to write
manuals for them and release them. He has a brilliant yachting simulator
which is amazingly accurate (does all the calculations and he updated it
regularly, you can go sailing anywhere fro your living room and all the
beacons etc are correct) Not to mention some rather addictive puzzle games
and stuff. He also wrote an enigma code machine emulator for the QL which is
totally authentic - he even contacted Bletchley Park in the UK for info to
get the coding right.

Well I use it at home and I'm on a broadband connection (now) which is fine. I
did use it before when I was on a dial-up link and as you note, it tends to
produce large downloads.

My version simply tells me that it is out of date and waits for me to click on
the 'update' button to do the actual updating - so I can fit it in to suit me.

My laptop has Symantec and it is configured to check at connect time for any
required updates. As I'm usually using my laptop on customer sites, I need to
be fully up to date with a 'recognised' AV system (plus firewall). I can
configue this to run on demand, but I prefer to leave it on.

The reason for all these big downloads is quite simple. Windows is a pile of
non-secure poo and there are literally hundreds of new virusses, variants on
old ones etc appearing almost every day. I've had Symantec downloads of as
little as 50Kb and as large at 4 Mb at times. There has never been a day when I
didn't have to download something.

If MS actually wrote a decent set of programs, and the OS itself, we might not
be in this situation. Linux is far far more secure and being open source, fixes
get produced pretty damned quickly.

There was a recent article in New Scientist entitles 'Not so clever now eh' (or
similar) whereby it was announced that Linux had had 24 alerts notified but
Windows only had 6. The missing information was that the Linux ones were all
already fixed, while Windows still hasn't fixed their 6 - who's clever now then
?

Still, and in an attempt to at least mention our esteemed platform of choice,
at least we don't have to worry about virusses on the QL do we ?

Apart from the one I wrote many years ago :o)

Cheers,
Norman.

Well

1. Only runs in MODE 4 colours - Green and red mainly, as per welsh flag.

2. Plays "whats new pussycat?" by Tom Jones while loading.

3. Has a choice of sheep or leeks as a wallpaper theme.

4. Has an LWPM (large Welshman protection mode) in which the keyboard and
mouse don't work (only way to prevent Dil doing any damage)

5. Has dual processor/motherboard functionality - one intel/AMD and one
68xxx, so if Dil buggers up the Intel part, he can switch to 68xxx mode.

6. Has Welsh language Icons and help files (by default)

7. Has in-built, anti-virus protection called "know-leeks 1.0"

8. Supports a new graphic file format, similar to GIF and TIFF, called
CarDIFF.

9. The error sound is a sheep going "baa"

I'd just like to inform you that a somewhat bigger update has happened
to www.kilgu.net.

QPC: New SMSQ/E, new manuals, new demo hard disc(!) read to check out,
more utility software

QPCPrint: New QPCPrint section including free demo to check out

SMSQ/E: new version of sprite converter that can produce solid sprites
(sprite without a mask, i.e. just a pattern). This format is drawn
more rapidly and produces much smaller files, good for big images
within menus and the like or even images in general. Only supported
from SMSQ/E 3.10 onwards (or more specifically PTR CON driver 2.02).

Have fun. Any feedback, especially regarding the demo hard disc, is

more rapidly and produces much smaller files, good for big images
within menus and the like or even images in general. Only supported
from SMSQ/E 3.10 onwards (or more specifically PTR CON driver 2.02).
Have fun. Any feedback, especially regarding the demo hard disc, is
appreciated.
Thanks for the info and work, I will check out the site this weekend.

I did port unrar v2.41 a while back... well it was when I lived in
Newcastle had quite a large BBS system in the North East and drank weak

Interesting. Probably worth reviving the work.
I still have the code somewhere, but never really tried to expand on
it. It is not as well developed as WINRAR, which seems to handle
anything including ISO9660 image files.
WinRAR is shareware . you have 40 days use with the software before
continuing use requiring a registration.

I only used it for the Phoebus RAR files, and it worked a treat. Easy to
use.

The graphic icons have a very slick, glossy look ... very nice.

but if that is the consensus, then I will replace all archives :-)
Ffibys
RAR is great, but QLers are too used to ZIP. Even though someone
(might have been Derek Stewart possibly?) did port a "Unrar" program
to QDOS.

Keep nagging him, Darren.
We need interesting new applications to enliven the QL software scene.

Yes.
That is useful information - I had not thought of this before. I suppose
that the format protection reverts on reboot then?

Brilliant news!! (Steve is a gifted Guitarist. I have Roy's Album with Last
Post and he is amazing on it - unbelievable solos.) I had thought you'd lost
touch with himI was just listening to him in the car last night on my
way home from work (that album occupies slot 4 on my CD Multi-changer!!)
I told him how much you and Marcel liked his work and he said "I can't
see it myself - I'm just an ordinary guitarist"

No! I got it [all]

Also, some days ago I wrote:

however, I never put the > in front of the line "From my quick.." and it

wots going on?

Now this one does ring a bell. Many is the time when I am about to delete a
list message because it appears as if there is **no** new stuff in it! i.e
every message line begins with at least one '>' or equivlt. As Per said -
"Any idea

Have fun all,

PS I Like the sound of "Dilwindoze"!!

[ql-users] Knight Safe

2005-04-29 Thread Roy wood
I have not sold any copies of Mark Knight's Knight Safe for some years
and a purchaser from some time back asked me for an update because it
did not run under the current SMSQ/E. I checked it here and it does just
give a black screen and nothing else. I will look into this during the
weekend but, if anyone has any ideas on what is happening here I would
be grateful.
