No.

That one's pretty descriptive, isn't it? The user running qmail-local
can't open that file, probably due to file or directory
permissions. Note that you have to look at the permissions on every
directory in the path. E.g.:

  ls -ld / /var /var/qmail /var/qmail/boxes /var/qmail/boxes/Mailbox.user

Could a FAQ for each qmail error message be written up?

Certainly.

Would that be a useful addition to LWQ?

That would be great. It's been planned for LWQ since the beginning
(see Appendix F), but I haven't had the time/gumption to write it up.

Hi, when running qmail, I have one domain that I am not able to send

it is a connection died, with an error message no. 4.4.2

Does anyone have any ideas if it is my or the other end, and what could
be possible causes.

Well, if you actually showed us the real error message and the real

Being verbose in error messages

2001-03-12 Thread Michael T. Babcock

Just an FYI to the group, this is what we've come up with for one of our
clients' configurations of qmail-notify. qmail-notify notifies senders
that their E-mail did not reach the intended recipient within a certain
amount of time and optionally CC's the network administrator (which it
is configured to do in this case):

-x-
Your message has been received by %s but has been
undeliverable to the listed recipients for at least %s.

The mail system will continue to attempt to deliver your message
to these recipients for a total of %s. Your network administrator
is aware of this situation.  This message is for your information;
you do not need to resend your message at this time.
If the message below is time-critical, consider faxing or calling
the intended recipient. You will be notified again only if this
message ultimately fails to reach one or more of the recipients.

  Recipient(s):
-x-

This _may_ finally be verbose enough to keep the users from E-mailing
their mail administrator with "Julie didn't get my E-mail yet!"

This is Dan's QSBMF format; don't change it. See

untouched ? or only english text is allowed ? (Hi, this is the ...) i need
 them in french :)

You can add to them, providing you don't add additional paragraphs (i.e.,
no extra blank lines). Change it so that it sends out the message like
this:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at silverton.berkeley.edu.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the
following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up.
Sorry it didn't work out.
=
Bonjour. [rest of message in French]

The line with just "=" in it keeps the French message from being seen by
QSBMF parsers as a separate paragraph. You can use a different separator,
but it cannot start with a "-".

Apart from trouble? Nothing.

Seriously, you have some serious resource and permission problems. Tell
us more about the installation. Is it new? How did you do it? Which instructions
did you follow? Has this mail system ever been running? What has changed recently?
Any change of permissions, moving of directories, backup/restores? How do you start
qmail?

I suspect that the permission settings in /var/qmail differ from the ones set
by a standard qmail install. I also suspect that the limits inherited by
qmail-start need to be increased.

I'd be surprised. Just because a server is overloaded doesn't mean
that permissions start acting differently. But certainly the "cannot
create pipe" *may* be that too many processes are consuming all system
limited resources. That can be changed, but it is OS dependent.

Grab an editor and UTSL.

I am sure Erich can answer for himself, but may I posit one possible
reason:

The people who read bounce mails are typically those who sent it, which,
99% of the time, is a person who is completely unfamiliar with mail
systems.

To them, something like, "You cannot sent mail to that site using this
mail server", or somesuch, would be less confusing and more personable.

Just a thought.

On the flip side, as soon as the word "rcpthosts" leaves a user's
mouth, I am pretty sure I know exactly what the problem is.

Your actually quite right.

Actually we use vpopmail's roaming users. So if they dont check their email
beforehand they cannot use us as a relay. We get many calls from angry
customers and employees because all they see in the current error message is
"You cant send mail."

On the flip side, as soon as the word "rcpthosts" leaves a user's
mouth, I am pretty sure I know exactly what the problem is.

Yeah, but in my opinion I dont want to hear of those calls in the first
place. =)

It means that your end sent the entire message but never got the

WARNING: qmail's bounce messages are in a format called QSBMF
(qmail-send Bounce Message Format). Although they're human-readable,
they're also machine-readable, and if you translate them, you'll break
that. If you really need them in another language, investigate the
QSBMF format and see if you can make them multilingual. You'll need to

No, we're all a bunch of self-important, heartless pricks that like to

what source too search, and can i do it w/o
modifying a lot of source code?

QSBMF is documented at ftp://koobera.math.uic.edu/www/proto/qsbmf.txt.

You'll have to modify qmail-send.c. A quick read of the QSBMF doc
says that you could add additional human-readable text to the
introductory paragraph. QSBMF defines a paragraph as a series of
non-blank lines followed by a single blank line. So you could do
something like:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mx1.drenik.net.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
  -
  Bonjour.
oben gegeben. Traurig arbeitete es nicht aus.

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.1.1)

So the first "paragraph" is actually multiple paragraphs in different
languages saying the same thing. The "-" paragraph breaks keep QSBMF
parsers from seeing the separate paragraphs.

It means that it connected to 194.1.130.66, but the connection died
before the email was completely transferred. It's possible that the
mail will be duplicated, because as far as qmail's SMTP client is
concerned, it threw the entire message down the socket, including the
SMTP termination sequence, but didn't get any response.

Is anywhere complete list of error messages?

What problem would that solve (I'm not being obstreperous. I just
want to hear you express the problem in words before you start a
premature search for the solution).

Error messages and logging

1999-09-29 Thread The Green Avenger

Hello folks,

I tried to move a queue on to a separate drive recently, and I am saw the
following error messages in the syslog. Using the qmail-qsanity-0.52 I
was able to resolve the problem, but I would love to know a way to get
qmail to log more information. There have been times where I could not
determine the problem from the logs. Any ideas?

This is due to inode magic. See FAQ 7.5. However, as you have found
out qmail-qsanity knows how to rename the message files to match with
inode numbers once more.

Re: Error messages and logging

Actually, we slightly altered your script (from qmail.org) to do the inode
magic. The problem was with user and group ownership.

Still, for other qmail problems I have wanted to configure qmail to log
more information and was unable to figure out how. Has anyone done this
sucessfully?

Re: qmail and smtp error messages

1999-05-04 Thread Timothy L. Mayo

The dynamic DNS registration is only mapping your forward lookup
(name-IP). I believe the problem is that AOL and mindspring are doing
reverse lookups (IP-name) which of course return the fact that you are
sending from a dialup IP from sprint.net. The simple fix is to use
Sprints SMTP server as a relay for all mail going to AOL and mindspring.

Others may have better suggestions. That's the best I can come up with.

Congratulations, you're a martyr in the War on Spam. You suffer so
others don't have to. Thanks for the sacrifice.

The spamically correct thing for you to do is configure your qmail to
send everything out through your ISP's mail hub.
