RE: [qmailtoaster] Re: Per Session Limit Question
That's kinda what I figured it did. Just wasn't 100% on that decision. Thanks for the info. I think what's happening is the client uses Peachtree accounting to send invoices. And from what I remember of Peachtree is it sends the invoice to the email client of choice and sends through it. Since the client uses Outlook 2007 I'm thinking it isn't sending the message right away. Instead I think it probably Cues the message in Outlook until you hit send and receive. If that's the case, and I believe that is the default for Outlook it could very well be holding a rather large number of messages to send. Hence, causing the per session limit pop up. I've got to go over to the clients place of business and check that to know for sure however. Joel - Since it's NortonAV that's issuing the message, I expect that the solution lies therein. Although I can't speak to the tcp.smtp configuration, we used to run Symantec antivirus here so maybe I can clarify what's going on with that. When you have a Norton/Symantec antivirus product installed on a Windows box and configured to monitor your email, it inserts itself as a transparent proxy, watching all inbound outbound traffic on typical email protocol ports on that machine. The Norton/Symantec product is not generating the error, it's simply reporting back to the user what it received from the outbound mail server. I can't honestly say if Outlook (any version) uses a separate session for each messages or not, but I would guess that it likely sends them all in a single smtp session. No reason not to that I can see. What I said earlier about this is probably wrong. I do know that Outlook doesn't leave an smtp session going continually though. That would eventually time out. However, if a slew of messages were waiting to go out, as in the case where Outlook was offline for a period of time, they could all be sent in a single smtp session. If/when this happens, I honestly don't know what chkuser would do. I expect that it would apply the limits to each messages individually, but I'm not certain of that. Tonino? Generally speaking, I'm not aware of any limits that are placed on multiple messages in a single smtp session. This doesn't mean that there aren't any though. Sorry for the disinformation earlier. RE: [qmailtoaster] Future Distros - RHEL/CentOS ONLY
I say it is a move in the right direction. I'm sure it's going to step on some bodies toes at some point, but if the community as a whole moves in this direction and can settle on CentOS as the base OS of choice it will only make us all stronger since we would all be on the same OS whether it's 32 or 64 bit. Not to mention the time saved with coding for so many different OS's that you coders support right now. I propose we move in that direction and make CentOS the OS of choice as soon as possible. Just my 2 cents. Joel -Original Message- From: Eric Shubert [mailto:e...@shubes.net] Sent: Monday, February 13, 2012 11:44 AM To: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Subject: [qmailtoaster] Future Distros - RHEL/CentOS ONLY I've done a good deal of thinking about this, and think that it'd be best to run it by the community at large (not just the developers) for everyone's consideration. This is not really new, and is not much different than what Jake had committed to some time ago. I just want to be sure that everyone is on board with this, and explain a few things. Due to various changes in the IT landscape over the past several years, I think it's best that future QMT development be limited to the RHEL/CentOS platform. There are several factors involved. First is that we'll be changing the method of distribution from source rpms to binary rpms, using yum to install packages (qtp-newmodel will be modified accordingly). We can do this because the qmail (et al) licensing was changed to public domain a couple years ago, so there is no restriction to distribute source-only any more. We also have mirrors in place that eliminate the need to have a single distribution point with high bandwidth capability. Using binary rpms for distribution not only simplifies installs and upgrades, but it also substantially reduces the disk space required, in addition to making QMT more secure due to the absence of a compiler and build tools. All in all, this is a win-win change. Secondly, the industry in general is moving toward virtual hosts, and QMT is making this move as well (many of us already run QMT as one or more VM guests). One of the advantages of virtualization is that multiple machines can coexist on the same host hardware, concurrently running entirely different operating systems and versions of languages and software. There's little need any more for QMT to coexist on the same machine with other applications or services. In fact, things are moving in a direction such that QMT itself will become divided into logical roles that will be able to implemented on separate hosts, allowing for more flexible and scalable QMT configurations. Stay tuned for that development, which is a ways off yet. So let's take a look briefly at the prominent distros that QMT will be discontinuing. Mandriva is on the ropes, struggling to survive. If you presently have a QMT running on Mandy, I would seriously consider a migration in the near future. SUSE does not use yum, it has yast instead. When I looked at yast some time ago it had no CLI, which was a big drawback to me. While I expect that yum could be installed and used, it goes against the When in Rome philosophy. The source rpms will of course continue to be available, so if someone cares to adapt them for SUSE, they may do so. While Fedora contains a great deal of what's in store for future RHEL/CentOS releases, it's not well suited as a QMT platform, simply because it changes too often (a new release twice a year), and most often none of the changes provide any benefit to QMT. If there happens to be something that would benefit QMT, it would most likely be available for RHEL/CentOS in the EPEL repo. So there is really no sense in packaging QMT for Fedora. I think this covers the distros worth mentioning. If I missed one, please let me know. In summary, going forward QMT will be available only on RHEL/CentOS platforms, for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. This will simplify spec files, documentation and installation/utility scripts substantially. For all other distros, the existing build options in the spec files will no longer be included. They will however be archived in a source code repository before being removed, so that they'll be available should anyone want to reference them at some point in the future. If you have a problem with or question about any of this, or you'd simply like to comment about something, please don't hesitate to reply. The main thing that's happening is that Jake will be changing the authoritative DNS for the qmailtoaster domains from his nameservers to Dan McAllister's. Dan has a nice set of authoritative name servers, which will be augmented soon with a few more secondary servers operated by some other members of our community (Phil, Andreas and CJ). Also, the qmailtoaster.net and qmailtoaster.org domain names will be going away. Everything for the project will be using the qmailtoaster.com domain (and appropriate subdomains). The only thing this really affects (that we know of) are the mirrors, which have been modified to use the .com domain from this point forward. qtp-newmodel has also been modified accordingly and a new QTP has been released, so you should upgrade your qmailtoaster-plus package before upgrading any *-toaster packages as of tomorrow. RE: [qmailtoaster] Re: Migrating from Qmail Rocks install on Solaris to Qmail Toaster on CentOS
This is only my 2 cents. You will want to lower your DNS TTL down to 3600 before you start this process at least 3 or 4 days before. That way when you transfer over you won't get as many phones call complaining about mail issues. And it should clear itself in about an hour. Then you can simply change the smtproutes in the sa host to point to the new server at an appropriate time, after the new host is up and running and accounts exist there. Understandable about keeping the old server up while changes propagate. Don't need to worry about the inbound side though, as that'll stay the same. The old server is using courier, but I guess dovecot could be a better route. I've used it a little in the past on a different server. What kind of difficulty am I looking at to switch from courier to dovecot? It's not tough at all. See the wiki for instructions. There's an rpm for QMT available in the QTP repo. Also, how would you recommend that I keep the maildirs up to date? Im trying to figure out the best way to do that without causing either lost or duplicate mail. Am I going to want to create tarballs of mailboxes and run some type of conversion on them before restoring them, or utilize sync, or is there a better way? I think you're gonna need to do some scripting for this, as the directory structure is changing. Basically, you want something that'll migrate the maildir folders from one host to another. I think I'd use tar with a couple scripts to 'drive' the thing. On the old side, the script should find a domain (or drive it with a list), then find each account, then tarball up the maildir into a single file. At the end of the process, you can tarball up all the account tarballs into a single archive for transfer. After transfer, on the new side, untar the transferred file, and another script would process each maildir tarball, and untar it into the appropriate place. Be careful not to wipe out any mail that may have come in directly to the new server already. The only problem I can think of is if you have pop users who leave messages on the server. Those are going to be duplicated. If your users can't live with that, you'll need to do some extra work to get that part taken care of. Thanks for all the help you've been offering...I certainly appreciate it. Sure. I hope you're taking copious notes for the wiki. ;) -- -Eric 'shubes' - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. RE: [qmailtoaster] problem with dkim
FWIW, I had issues with what sounds like the same thing. I removed the CHKUSER_RCPTLIMIT=50,CHKUSER_WRONGRCPTLIMIT=10 trom tcp.smtp And so far I haven't had issues. If you use spamdyke it takes care of the max_recipients=50 for you. You might even try removing the CHKUSER_WRONGRCPTLIMIT=10 and see if the issue goes away. I'm not sure how that rule works. Eric, After removing the CHKUSER_RCPTLIMIT=50,CHKUSER_WRONGRCPTLIMIT=10 in tcp.smtp my toaster is now working when a mass mailing it sent. I'm just letting spamdyke control that with max-recipients=50 I suspect the CHKUSER_WRONGRCPTLIMIT=10 part may have been the culprit. But not sure. But on a side note. That would be the ability to add certain word phrases to say a file that could be checked against for more spam tagging. However for those that are still seeing the ever ongoing spam what I've used and seems to help is to add this to your IPTABLES rules. This is all one line when you add it to iptables. I don't know off hand, but I expect that adding an appropriate SpamAssassin rule to the /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf file would accomplish the same thing for you. This would be the preferred way to handle such a filter. I expect someone here might be able to whip up an example of such a rule. Anyone? RE: [qmailtoaster] Re: Re; General Question
Sometimes I'm not confident enough to make a suggestion to some questions for fear of busting someone's setup. But I try to help where and when I can. The one issue I'm left with is this multiple recipient's problem. I've dug through smtp logs all morning and I can not find any errors or problems. But the user still can't send to 50 at a time. They sent to 8 and it worked then 12 and it worked. They tried 25 at first and that failed. But I can't find any indication in log files what happened or what blocked it. I did read where the user must auth to the smtp server so I confirmed that is set in their outlook. But still no luck. I wonder if I remove the CHKUSER_RCPTLIMIT=50 and CHKUSER_WRONGLIMIT=10 out of tcp.smtp if it would work? Just let spamdyke control max-recipients. Also is the file chkuser_settings.h in /var/qmail/doc/ the config file used for chkuser? Once I find the problem it's probably going to be one of those DUH moments. Oh well. I just wish others would chime in more often. ;) Anyway. The question I have is when you make a change to spamdyke.conf do you need to restart qmail? Not at all. Changes to spamdyke.conf (and associated config files) are reloaded on the fly with each smtp connection. That'd make a nice FAQ. :) If you feel a little more ambitious, a web page about managing services in general would be nice. Eg when restarting is necessary, and how to do each one. For instance, many people (myself included) are surprised that doing a service qmail restart (or qmailctl restart) only restarts qmail-smtpd, and not other related services. -- -Eric 'shubes' - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. [qmailtoaster] Re; Timout issue
Eric on this issue of timeout from spamdyke that I see in the smtp logs could it be something in the caching dns causing the problem? This is what I'm finding out so far. If I send the person an email and they reply back I'll get the message. If the person sends an email by typing in my address I get the message. And if they send an attachment by typing in my address I get the message. But now this morning the person sent me a message as a test without my sending any contact email. RE: [qmailtoaster] Re: SPAM Designation Option
I hear ya. I just ran into this yesterday as well. What I did to correct the issue was to add the email address to the /etc/spamdyke/whitelist_recipients file. The recipients mail server was an exchange server(yuck bad word) but it used postini to screen their spam. The rDNS resolved back to postini and not what they had in their dns records. I finally just gave up trying to explain it and found I could add the address to the spamdyke whitelist. Solved It for me. And that way you not whitelisting and entire domain that could be a spammer. Hope that helps. _ From: Peter Peltonen [mailto:peter.pelto...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 03, 2011 12:38 PM To: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Subject: Re: [qmailtoaster] Re: SPAM Designation Option Hi, On Tue, May 3, 2011 at 7:31 PM, Eric Shubert e...@shubes.net wrote: that. Spamdyke false positives are practically nonexistent though, so you might want to just leave spamdyke active and not tell him about it. Then again, if he insists on receiving spam, I'd charge him extra for the load it'll cause on your server as well as the trouble of configuring spamdyke. ;) Even if Spamdyke is correct, it does not mean that the end behaviour is what the customer expects. I have ran into issues where customers haven't received email they were expecting because of Spamdyke rejecting a message because of missing reserve dns. And it does not help telling the customer that the sending server is not properly configured, if they can receive the same email with their Gmail or some other account... I have been playing around with an idea that I should create a page for each customer where they could check the sending addresses for denied messages. So if there is a real message denied I could then offer an option to white list that mail server or sending address, so that the customer could try contacting the sender again. Just an FYi for anyone else that has no output in the clamd mrtg graphs. After seeing Eric had some issue with simsscan headers or some thing like that I went and re installed simscan with the new model script. After that clamd mrtg started working. It did however hork my simscontrol file. It also added a tcp.smpt.new file. When I compared it to the old one It had added the RBLSMTPD line and a few other things. So I copied the new file over the tcp.smtp file. Now spamassassin is marking spam that it wasn't before. Clamd is now graphing as well. So in short I suspect something either in one up the updates to qmailtoaster Or maybe upgradeing to CentOS 5.6 altered something along the way. But as of now all is working. RE: [qmailtoaster] Re: migration from qmail/vpopmail to qmailtoaster, vdominfo shows 0 users for all domains.
Just to add my 2cents and that's about all it's worth. If you go into the sql database and change the number 21474836nn that's in there to say the number of actual accounts it will fix it. The NEVER use vqadmin again. It is a pain in the A$$. I use PHPMyAdmin for my MySQL but you use what ever you're comfy with. Now for my 2 cents. KILL vqadmin it's busted period and has been for years. I use QControl, buy the full version like I did if you have multiple domains. /plug It's worth it in my opinion. And with that you get the man that knows whaaaz up with Qmail. /end of plug Okay, I'll get off my soap box now. The only issue I'm seeing is: /home/vpopmail/bin/vdominfo will display all of the domains, but shows the following for every domain: users: 0 Yet there are of course many users in each domain. That value is bogus on my QMT hosts as well. I have either 0 or 21474836nn, with no apparent rhyme or reason. Some little bug in there I expect, but it doesn't appear to hinder operation at all. FWIW, vqadmin is also broken at this point. It's reportedly ok for viewing things, but don't go updating anything with it. I don't even install it myself. You don't really need it. If you want a gui tool for that sort of thing, have a look at qcontrol. Since you're new to QMT, I would recommend installing qmailtoaster-plus if you haven't already (http://qtp.qmailtoaster.com), and also install spamdyke (using the qtp-install-spamdyke script in QTP). RE: [qmailtoaster] Firewall block
You can do what I've done. Build yourself a bridging firewall. Then set iptables up in your bridging firewall to block any and all attempts to ssh from outside your network. This way you can do all kinds of cool stuff like packet filter out Viagra and what ever else trips your trigger. I am seeing a lot of ssh attempts from China. Since I don't send or receive email with China, I'd like to just block them at the firewall en mass (instead of one net block at a time). Any ideas? I installed webmin as well and have had no issues. I am sure you have this covered, but just in case some basics are: are you trying to access it from the server itself? if so, you should use its ip or localhost, ala https://localhost:1 or https://1.2.3.4:1 . if over the internet you must use the servers ip address or FQDN, and any routers/firewalls must allow that port through. if the server is running a firewall (like ipchains) it also must allow that port to the ip address or localhost (whichever you are using). hope this helps or gets you pointed in the right direction. Log into your account and download the new version to your server. The a simple rpm -Uvh QControl-1.1-1.1.0.noarch.rpm will do it. The new version should also be fixed so that it does not overwrite your current user/pass to login. - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. [qmailtoaster] Re: dir_control
Pardon the stupid knob question if it's already been answered. If it has could some one add a link for it? The issue appears to be that dir_control in MySql does not work. I've added 260 accounts to the domain and it dropped them all in to the directory in the domain. vpopmail has access to the data base and all. Where should I look for the problem?
