Re: [qmailtoaster] Updated packages
My 2 cents... With the exception of ClamAV and Spamassasin rule sets, why is Qmailtoaster updated so much? I know I have not updated most of the applications on my toaster for 1.5 years (My last hardware migration). On a small setup, I am sure it is a lot easier to perform regular updates, but on a large one it has a potential to be a nightmare. Is there a reason why toaster is not slowed down a little? Jake, I do not know how you keep up with all the package updates and all of the problems that keep getting posted on the list. My head spins sometimes as I read it. I am surprised that qmailtoaster 1.x has not been frozen so that development of 2.x can be fully engaged. Changing the IMAP client is a big deal and I am excited that it will be done in the next release. The other item I think should be a focus is the web gui, not only the admin side which has been a recent focus on this list, but the customer side as well. I think you are doing a great job Jake. The Qmailtoaster is a great project and I really enjoy seeing the activity on the list regarding it. Gilbert - Original Message - From: Jake Vickers j...@qmailtoaster.com To: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Sent: Monday, June 15, 2009 10:51 AM Subject: [qmailtoaster] Updated packages Released a new version of all packages today. Updated ClamAV to 0.95.2. Updated Squirrelmail to 1.4.19 and courier-authlib to 0.62.2. Added Mandriva 2009 support. Also added Fedora 11 and Fedora 11 x86_64 support. ClamAV is a bugfix update and Squirrelmail is a security update that is a continuation of the 1.4.18 security fix. I updated courier-authlib by accident to be honest. I was trying to get Mandriva to work and attempted to see if a newer courier-authlib package would compile cleanly but ended up finding the issue with Mandriva. Forgot to put the original package back in place and just now noticed it as I was cleaning up the old packages and archiving them. It should function just as the old one did. I did not get Mandriva 2009 x86_64 support into these packages. Mandriva 2009 renamed a lot of packages from previous editions that caused a lot of time to be spent finding the new packages names. In the 2009 x86_64 version they changed the names again and I honestly just didn't want to spend the time chasing the package names down when a new version of clamav was waiting to be put online. If someone wants to work on the Mandriva 2009 x86_64 dependency script and send me a revised version I will add the support into the packages. Otherwise it will be a while. Speaking of which, the Fedora dependency scripts could use a freshening up as well. If someone would like to go through those scripts and make sure all the relevant dependencies are covered and send me a revised edition I will be more than happy to put them online. I have moved the Qmailtoaster website to a new, faster server so if you do not see the updated packages rest assured that you will see them once DNS has propagated. QTP can be installed/upgraded via yum if you have the repo installed, or manually by downloading from the web site. I recommend updating QTP if you're using qtp-newmodel to upgrade the other packages. -- -Eric 'shubes' - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. The Qmailtoaster is a great project and I really enjoy seeing the activity on the list regarding it. The packages are updated to add new distros and bump the software up a version or two. There was previously no development at all for Qmailtoaster for almost 2 years and since I took the project over I decided to bring some things up to date. It's your system - you don't have to update anything. I think that freezing the 1.3 branch is not a wise choice. The project lost 70% of it's contributing base when the development was previously frozen and that's not a mistake I want to continue with. I'm unclear as to what you mean by all of the problems that keep getting posted on the list. As far as I can remember this is the only real screw-up I've made to the packages and I did get them fixed in a couple hours - not like the clamav debacle. Most of the posts on the list had to do with adding new distros and the problems involved, which brings us back to the point of why I'm updating the packages. I think a project that gets updated periodically and is maintained has more of a life than a project that has not been updated in 3 or 4 years. Also not sure what you mean by a nightmare for large installations - I run these same packages on my installations as well. Some servers range from 2 users (this one) to a single server that has 3100 users to a cluster that has 40,000+ users at the moment. I find it very easy to update the packages for all of these systems as long as you do at least 15 minutes of thinking and planning ahead before just jumping into the puddle. There is a web admin gui, vqadmin. I also have QControl that does not have the problems that vqadmin does. If there's a feature that you would like to see in QControl then send me an email offlist and I will look into it. - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. Re: [qmailtoaster] Updated packages
I did not mean to come off the way that I was interpreted Jake I think you are doing a great job and I wish I had better programming skills and/or time to help you on this community project. I was trying to get a feel as to why there are so many package updates and why you did not hold off on updating packages and you answered that with your response. When I was indicating problems, I was just speaking of random posts, not anything specific to the recent package issue. The system is unbelivelby stable and many of the problems posted are easily fixed by the poster doing a little research though there are some advanced questions that do require someone like you to get their hands dirty. I was personally having many problems with my installation. I spent a little time, posted a couple questions on the list that were answered quickly, and got through them. I have made many modifications, some of which I forgot to document when I did my install. This has caused me many headaches. I have never used spamdyke. I just installed last month your Qmailtoaster-Plus to look at a few things that it performed. I have used a couple of the scripts but still have not gotten completely comfortable with change. The bulk of the updates have been to add new distros. Seemed a little silly to stop support at Fedora Core 6 when that distro was 3 years out of support. I have an implementation which is using clamav 0.90rc2 and when I accidentally unpluged the server clamav was complayning of : * ERROR: Socket file /tmp/clamd exists. Either remove it, or configure a different one. * I tried it again and it was the same ! So if you don't have power issues it should be safe. I think that shouldn't be issue for many many users. Since there is now a new maildrop package which i assume has the mailfilter spam support, should the qmailadmin be modified so it defaults with --define 'spambox 1'? Re: [qmailtoaster] UPDATED PACKAGES: clamav-toaster, squirrelmail-toaster, simscan-toaster, maildrop-toaster, courier-authlib-toaster, courier-imap-toaster
However, if you use qtp-newmodel with qtp-build-rpms v0.2.3 (qmailtoaster-plus-0.2.3-1.3.5 or later), the --define 'spambox 1' parameter will be used unconditionally for qmailadmin-toaster, so you should be sure to upgrade to the latest maildrop-toaster if you upgrade qmailadmin-toaster using qtp-newmodel.
