[QUAD-L] Is this inappropriate touching?

2012-09-12 Thread KK
I am having a tough time deciding if this is wrong or I am being crazy.

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I am paralyzed from the chest down except for my
right arm. No feeling at all. I also can not speak. This aide has been with
me about 2 months, M-F 5 hours a day. Yesterday we went outside on the front
porch she was talking to a neighbor. Suddenly she took my keys ran them
across my feet. I did nothing. Didn't feel it but saw her movements. She
smiled did it over over again. It was like she did not believe I could not
feel it.

Now I feel this was inappropriate but not sure what she expected to get out of
her actions. It has made me feel uncomfortable dread her coming today.

Maybe I am being weird. What do you think about it?

I can completely understand how you feel ! Our car wreck was August 3rd 1997. I
was 40 and now i'm 55 years old. This morning we were both struggling to get up
get going another day, My wife was in the accident with me and is my sole
caregiver, She gets severe migraine headaches from the accident and must work
full time plus take care of me and a grandson we must raise. My 1st 10 years as
a quad was heavenly compared to now .  lol,  I feel like i'm like a feeble
older
80 plus year old man at times. I guess all we can do is try to stay positive,
focus on the good things we have or can enjoy--I think we all gotta be tough
mentally...We are not alone, as many of the quads on here face similar
trials of life. Stay strong !  like I have found out thru the years-things
could always be worse than most current situations, even when that seems hard
to
imagine at times. I have seen quads on T.V. in forein countries that are so
poor
they must be pulled around in a wagon because the terrain is bad and can't
afford wheelchairs. When I think of poor folks like that...I realize how
blessed
I am. Dan H.* C-6

I would say that any unwanted touching would be inappropriate. The fact
that it made you feel uncomfortable should confirm that.

That seems creepy to me, If I were you I would just ask her why she did it and
tell her you you were uncomfortable. I fortunately have some feeling, but if I
didn't I would not let my aides know that. A long time ago an aide did try
something extremely innappropriate and from that time on I swore to let every
aide in the future know I have feeling. Lets us know how she explains it.

Any touching that makes you feel uncomfortable is definitely inappropriate.
The fact that your aide was doing this when she knew you did not have your
speech machine with you and you could not let her know how you felt about
it. As someone else said, let her know that you felt uncomfortable and ask
her why she did it. As we are very dependent upon our aides to act
appropriately and safely for us, you need to know why she acted so oddly,
especially in front of somebody else. This is why it is so important to
have your guidelines and rules in place with your aides so that everyone is
clear on appropriate behavior and attitudes. Good luck. Joan

You are crazy KK, but that is another issue (smiling)

In the world of law, that action would be considered, assault. If the
person touched you again after any sign of disapproval, those actions
would be considered, assault and battery. This alone would lead to
police intervention, a report, an arrest and money bond. The case
would have to be heard by the court and a judgement. These actions
would also lead to additional hearings, by the person's employment.
These types of actions should not be tolerated by anyone, verbal or
none verbal.

Ick. I shivered just reading this. In my opinion, any contact unrelated to care
is inappropriate unless I give consent. Yes it is easy to get attached to
certain aides and relax the rules a little bit but as a whole, just because
these people take care of our bodies doesn't mean they have any special rights
to our bodies outside of that care.

You're not crazy, dear. You're just listening to your instincts, which is very

Tomorrow the nurse is coming. We get along great so I am planning on talking
to
her about the situation.

I now have the wheelchair set up for the speech machine to go on easily.

As far as transferring goes I use a board. She helps by standing in front of
me
with her foot between my legs. Basically it is a slide over from chair to bed.

Most times I can manage it alone. But the afternoon bed time requires watching
if some help.

Thank everyone for your answers.

I have had bladder stones removed from my bladder, but I would think it's
not much more difficult than that. If you cath from your belly button, they
can simply go in with the scope and remove the stones from your makeshift
bladder.

As far as kidney stones go, that's another story.

I'm curious to know how a quad can tell if they have something like
bladder cancer going on, would there be some noticable problems or just
during a urologist check up ? thanks Dan H.**

I had bladder cancer so my bladder was re-made using my intestines and was
put just inside my stomach beneath my belly button. I self cath...as my
daughter said I now pee through my stomach. Its sometimes called the Miami
 or Indiana pouch.

 I'm 49 years post..may 5th will be 50 years omg..its hard to believe its
been such a long time. I will be 68 next month, I was 18 when I was in a
car accident. I have had many, many problems but I'm still hanging in.
Like Lori who just lost her husband my husband is my care giver and hes 72
now..I hate to think about what would happen if he dies but I'm trying to
be realistic and have some plans in place. My biggest problem right now is
kidney and bladder stones and I have a Miami pouch due to bladder
cancer..has anyone on the list had stones removed from a pouch? Carolyn

[QUAD-L] life

2012-09-12 Thread Ismael Cavazos
October 8, will be 32 years that I'd been a quad October 26 when I was born.
I was completely blind after six surgeries in my eyes. I started seeing.
When I was 11 years old. Not very good, but it was better than nothing. I
am consider legally blind. Nobody said being a quad is going to be simple,
yet this true that I have come a long way with God help I been blessed. And
I will continue being less every day is a challenge of being a quad I know
that I'm not going to be the first or the last quad. The way I see it. The
life of a quad is almost like a boxer they knocked him down. He tried to
get up and try to win the next round. Life Knox us down, and we try to get
up the next day. And we keep on punching life. Some of us quads was very
young and we miss a lot that we know that we never going to catch up what we
miss a lot of of dreams went down the drain. Yes it's true, we got good
days and bad days, but sometimes we don't know what to do, what to say what
to think but sometimes we don't want to realize that we been very lucky.
And we been blessed and a lot of ways for a sample a lot of children's are
born with leukemia yes, we had a chance to walk to run the play but that
baby, what chance he had in life. Like I said yes it's true we were young,
and we've got all the way to be an adult, but the question is, but would
that baby get to be an adult. Yes it's true, Jesus suffer more then we are
suffering is nothing compared what we are going through

Any of you guys have experience/knowledge of hiatal hernias? I seem to have all
the symptoms, and it feels like my stomach is pushing into my throat. Food
seems to get stuck just below rib cage where my belly bulge begins. It's pretty

Best Wishes

Subject: [QUAD-L] Is this inappropriate touching?

I am having a tough time deciding if this is wrong or I am being crazy.

I have Multiple Sclerosis.  I am paralyzed from the chest down except
for my right arm.  No feeling at all.  I also can not speak.  This aide
has been with me about 2 months, M-F 5 hours a day.  Yesterday we went
outside on the front porch she was talking to a neighbor.  Suddenly
she took my keys ran them across my feet.  I did nothing.  Didn't
feel it but saw her movements.  She smiled did it over over again.
It was like she did not believe I could not feel it.

Now I feel this was inappropriate but not sure what she expected to get
out of her actions.  It has made me feel uncomfortable dread her
coming today.

Maybe I am being weird.  What do you think about it?
