Nothing worse than waking up in a puddle of your own piss. I think that
sometimes the catheter gets up against the bladder wall in a funky way and
just doesn't drain well. I always start simple by changing the catheter.

Hi Lori, Eric,Jim, Greg, Nancy and all fellow Quad-list members,
I have suffered numerous medical situations that could’ve ended my life.
The Lord is not finished with me yet. Lori and all, I commend you on
your survival experiences. I wish I could document all my experiences like
Lori is able to do. I thank you all for sharing your life stories. I
have had some strange experiences when septic. I was in a coma twice.
Several situations were physician error. Yesterday after leaving a
appointment for blood work and Prolia shot for osteoporosis. My caregiver
hit the curb and blew out my tire and wheel on the front right tire. I was
able to get it towed by AAA but it took an hour and a half to find someone
to bring me home. A taxi service said they did not provide that kind of
transportation. Finally someone through AAA found out three places to
call. It happened around 5:30 PM and I got home around 9:30 PM. I am at
blessed that AAA waited till 10-10 large wheelchair assessable van
arrived. I thought it was going to be a desperate situation. AAA wanted
to pay for it by credit card but the taxi company would not accept. I
thought this was strange. Has anyone else ever had this experience, when
their vehicle was not drivable?

Re: [QUAD-L] Strange Question

2018-12-21 Thread Lori Michaelson
My injury (car accident) happened nearly 40 years ago and I was in the
hospital for a total of 13 months (October 1979 to the end of November
1980) because I was so bad. I was not even able to sit up until I got to
rehab so I was flat on my back for at least two thirds of that time which
included a neck fusion and having a tracheotomy at least 8 months. During
that time alone I came close to dying so many times I can't even remember
if and ever since.

I had such a bad neck injury that I choke often but have figured out that
it is from tight neck muscles so it is 100% easier for me to swallow laying
down. I have choked over 1000 times or more whereby I almost died. A
neurosurgeon nearly killed me in Brooklyn New York after I finally got the
diagnosis of Posttraumatic Syringomyelia and would have easily died if my
ex common-law husband of 13 years was not with me. They let cerebral spinal
fluid leak out of the back of my head for two weeks without doing anything!

That is only a small list of so many times and I almost died this year when
my sodium level dropped so low that I did not know who I was, began chewing
on my finger without even knowing it (and I would have broken it had my
caregiver not noticed it was happening) so I was rushed to the hospital and
spent two weeks in ICU, aspirated twice before and after the hospital
requiring a chest tube and one week later for a total of three weeks in the
hospital this year. Unbelievable.

Yup ... that is the first thing I bought and used it for a while. Things
began to settle down on their own for a while unless I talk a lot.

I started to have a problem with my lower left tooth and my caregiver could
clearly see that one or two cavities were there. When I left my sister and
brother-in-law's home I had seen a great dentist there and everything was
fine when I left in late 2015. I later read whereby Biotene can cause
cavities.

I do not have any dental insurance and with all the other medical problems
(including being bedridden 3 months at different times after being here) I
haven't had a chance to get to a dentist here. Every... single... day is
filled with something to do or something to begun or problems I have been
having. *Sigh*

I got the name of one from a friend of mine here and I made an appointment
at one time but then had to cancel it. I have been trying to find the
opportunity ever since but other things have taken top priority. One time
when I called them they asked me if I have ever heard of the available
travel dentist or dentist outfit and what I like a number. I told them that
I hope to make it to the dentist so I said no at the time. I guess that is
an option but they probably cost an arm and a leg and a few toes and more.
My expenses have increased 50% since my husband passed away and moving away
from being able to live with my sister and brother-in-law. I never had to
pay for a 24-hour live-in caregiver before.

People better write it down in their calendars if I can write a short
e-mail. LOL.

Larry...

I have been on Ditropan (Oxybutynin) for 37 years.

I first started out with 5 mg twice a day but then when I began to have
some bladder spasms in 2014 after I left my first visit to my local PCP
there (who had an office that had a pretty good size 3 inch dip entrance
because nothing in that town is accessible except for Wal-Mart or a grocery
store or one other physician I saw there) and going down off that drop from
his office with 6 tires they were quickly resolved with Extended Release
Oxybutynin - 10 mg twice a day.

But now that that nurse stretched my urethra beyond all recognition causing
me to leak terribly around my catheter I am now on Oxybutynin ER (15 mg)
which is the maximum dose but, unfortunately, that did not solve my problem
and now I am looking at surgery. I will never forget that woman!

Anyway, to answer your question... I have never experienced burning mouth
syndrome. Only dry mouth... which occurred when I had to up it to 15 mg
twice a day. Dry mouth IS a side effect but, again, I only began
experiencing it after increasing it to 15 mg extended release twice a day
until I can get this damn problem (not caused by me) taken care of.

I hope to get off of the medication simply because starting in the new year
my co-pay for it will be over $80 a month! That is the only extremely high
co-pay with the only Part D original Medicare can offer me with the
medications I am on. Our government is getting worse with Medicare and
Medicaid but I only been eligible for Original Medicare because, God

working and my husband did as well so I am not eligible for any Medicaid
programs until I tried to find out more about and perhaps go ahead and open

start earlier even though it is open nationwide now. I haven't had time to
look in depth about it because of my urology problem and making decisions
on what exactly to do to resolve it. Which I hope to find out on January 12.

2016-12-26 Thread Larry Willis
Question- Can extended use of ditropan (oxybutynin) lead to burning mouth
syndrome? Anyone else here experienced such a thing? It is a miserable curse.
Any food with even the slightest spice feels like a marriage of cayenne and
habanero. Sprite and Crest toothpaste both make my eyes water. It will go away
for a week or two then come roaring back. Anybody got a clue?

I have one and I can use the iPad with it using a sip and puff switch. You
can use one or two switches or a multi-switch joystick.

Bobbie... How then were you able to get the Hill Rom bed this year? Ordered
by a wound care physician?

Also, has anyone been denied rehab power wheelchair adaptations since July
1 when we were notified here on the quad list that Medicare and Medicaid
were going to stop paying for those?

Sneaky changes within the system and_Re: [QUAD-L] Cushion question

2016-08-01 Thread Lori Michaelson
Yeah Eric I found out six months ago (when moving from PA back to Arizona,
and wanting to bring my old fully electric bed with me but not having it
fit in the U-Haul and wanting Medicare to purchase me a new, fully electric
hospital bed) that Medicare will now not pay for a fully electric bed, but
only a semi-electric bed. I don't know when that started (Medicare cutbacks
with fully adjustable hospital beds) , but it was a surprise to me.

That sucks because my caregivers need the height adjustment for their backs
and for other reasons (transferring to and from the bed to the chair,
etc.). Fortunately, I was able to find a lady who is selling new fully
electric beds for only $200 so I took that opportunity to purchase one
since my old hospital bed was older than 20 years old but still working and
chugging along.

I s agree as well. I have mantle cell lymphoma, a cousin to leukemia.
Diagnosed in 2013. By all studies, it could return in 3 yrs in which chemo will
have no effect. There has been a pill that came out in 2014. If my body can't
tolerate it, I'm done! So there comes a time in which we have to look at the
quality of life!!!

I got a band new Hill Rom hospital bed AND a Hill Rom hi tec alternating
pressure mattress, the VERY best they have just this year.
I've been having sores on my butt for 25 years or more.
I've been in bed since Christmas and my wound is healed ... almost.
But, I got 2 different sores since I've been in bed turning and on the supper
duper mattress.
I'm so ready to just get up and live. But I'm talking about getting up 3
days a week for just 7-8 hours per day.

RE: [QUAD-L] Cushion question

2016-07-31 Thread Joan Anglin
I think it's very important to remember that each of us is very different.
We ask for opinions, and many times a solution or partial solution is found
in the answers. However, because of our differences, sometimes it is not.

25 years ago I was bitten by a brown recluse spider. This was back before
the destructiveness of their bite was widely known. The poison spread and
tunneled throughout my right thigh and hip. It required extensive surgery,
and took almost a year before we were done. As a result I had to learn to
sit differently, which eventually led to a sore in my groin.

Over the years we tried everything, staying in bed, roho cushion, wound
vacuum, all ineffective in the long run. During eight years of that time I
was unable to get insurance because I did not qualify for Social Security
disability. After a particularly nasty flare up and six months in a sand
bed, a very kind and generous plastic surgeon who treated me for years and
charged me $25.00 a visit, said I had a couple of options.

Continue treating this and doing all the preventive staying in bed etc. etc.
which led to no life to speak of, or get up and start a life treating this
wound. I made the decision to just deal with it. 17 years later I still
have the wound, it has only flared up a couple of times but considering
where it is located it is understandable. I go to wound care once a month,
and we watch it like a hawk.

For me it was the right decision, at 77 I know that my skin is becoming more
fragile and I am glad for the years when I was able to fully live my life.
Luckily I have been fortunate in having no other pressure sores that have
ever developed into serious problems.

I am not advocating my solution for anyone else, but I'm just putting it
forth to point out that we are all different. Have a great day everyone,
and enjoy the warm weather.

I sit in the foam/air combo which keeps me more stable. the air is only in the
back. this cushion is meant for people with or has had skin breakdown. I sat in
a gel for 25 yrs with no problems and like you lori, was up for the whole day
and yes, I had no problems until I got my new quatrum. the rep did not adjust
the cushion flush to the back which allowed my cheeks to hang over the edge of
the back of the cushion. I drive and yes I sit much higher. it's strange but I
got use to it. my head is very close to the door post. i'm 5'2 with short arms
and sit close to the steering wheel. had to be that way so I could reach
everything! Happy Birthday Lori!!!

I would love to sit more "stable" as well as keeping my ischial tuberousities
safe from further breakdown... especially having old battle wound on both of
them. The Ride Design cushions seem to offer that. Along with breathing room
down there.

I have never had a problem with "pressure" no matter what Cushion I have used.
Further, I never needed a "special" cushion until all of these rehab chairs
that began to come out around 1999 came with seat plates rather than bucket
seats. I digress, when I came home from rehab in 1980 in first Wheelchair
[Everest and Jennings] it had a seat plate I sat up on a foam/gel cushion
whereby I got a little sore on my tailbone.

I did not have any problem with any wounds until they came out with these
latest chairs. After my Everest and Jennings [of which I sat in for only 4 or 5
years) I had a wheelchair called a Fortress Scientific that I sat in for 14
years, 14 hours a day without shifting my weight, and it was just a very
comfortable bucket seat with nothing underneath my butt except for a thick area
of air which was below the seat part of the bucket seat. I never had one...
single... skin breakdown over those 14 years.

However, it is just another way for the people who come out with wheelchairs
and cushions and all of that stuff to keep the money rolling in. Sorry to sound
so cynical, but it is true.

I was just encouraged [by someone on this list fairly recently] to try it since
the Roho cushions have always had me weeble wobbling all over the place. I
began using the Roho cushions after having a Stage III wound. I have not been
able to try another kind [like the ride design cushions] but being held more
stable and sitting lower to the ground. Instead of buying high-profile Roho
question that always has to be "maintained" when I now do not have someone to
maintain it. Except for faithful Tom Borcherding... the president of Roho.
Which I can't thank him enough for!

For the longest time I have been wanting to ask people on the list how they are
able to see out of there van windows???

This is simply because ever since I have gotten one of the latest rehab power
chairs (whether it be Permobil or Quantum which basically all sit at a high
level because of the tilt features) and then have had to put a Roho Cushion on
top of such a high sitting chair... I sit so high in my conversion vehicles
(even with a 10 inch drop floor!) that I can't see anything except the road in
front of me. I can't even see road signs.

I am the passenger and no matter who my driver is... my chin is level with
their forehead!

Contour seats have to be designed to fit you. If it's meant to fit everyone it
will just cause you more problems. I personally need a seat that reclines and
can tilt in space. I do know it's possible to get Contour seats that can do
this. Car seats are made to recline an automotive manufacturers have been
studying the way people sit for a long time much longer then wheelchair
manufacturers. I'm absolutely certain that Contour seats can be made to fit
into wheelchairs without risking sores.
I get a little upset when I get into a car seat that is more comfortable then
my wheelchair and reclines electrically yet nothing like it is available in a
wheelchair. Let's face it a Roho seat maybe the height of comfort in
wheelchairs but it looks like crap. I think it's about time some wheelchairs
had a little bit more Style.
Best wishes to all

I have always gone back to Roho after trying a new cushion. I'm sure there will
be a better one sometime. I like the contour part. But, I worry every butt is a
different shape and size. If it curves where you don't, could cause an issue.
though if it fits good, might as well try it.

I currently have a stage 4 wound and NSN (national seating & mobility) put me
on a Roho Hybrid Elite which is foam/air combo but they suggested otherwise,
try the Ride Designs by Java. So it must be a good cushion.

Re: [QUAD-L] a question

2016-04-06 Thread Gmail
I dated a "devotee" in college.
He LOVED taking care of me.
He drove for me, when I can drive myself
He fed me, when I can fed myself
He changed the time I slept and ate

I was extremely depressed when he asked me out Halloween night.
He'd been asking me out since September and something told me to say "No"

We even got engaged Christmas, with a ring I bought

After Valentines Day I broke up with him.
I was laying in bed when I told him (shouldn't have) and he ranted and raved
... extremely angry. He straddle my hips, put his hands around my throat and
they can't squeeze and squeeze. He was a big guy, over 6'2"
Hey wanted me to beg him to stop or scream or both but I refused all I did was
stare him down he got mad and got off of me.

I had a lot of friends all around me after that all the time, they would NOT
let him near me.

My last year of college I had to transfer to another state!
I went from New Jersey to Pennsylvania about 500 miles.

Never saw or heard from him again.

Hi Dianna,

It’s called “Body Integrity Disorder”, something goes haywire in a person’s
mind and they feel as if they
are “supposed” to have some type of disability, spinal cord injury, amputation
etc. Very bizarre, and sad.
Seems quite real, although their minds can’t seem to wrap themselves around
real SCI problems like UTI’s
bowel & bladder accidents, pain, etc.—seems they often “choose” to be low level
incomplete injuries…

Here is a link to a blog I wrote about it:

Fwd: [QUAD-L] a question

2016-04-06 Thread Bryce Willis
Ah yes. Saw a show on tv a couple of years ago about people who felt they were
in the wrong body. They believed they were supposed to be disabled. I remember
one fellow put his leg in a bucket of dry ice until it was destroyed, had to be
amputated. The fellow was overjoyed. He said that leg never belonged to him.
Well, I would be glad to trade bodies with someone (if they were strong and
healthy). I cannot imagine wanting to be a quad!

I would suggest that you take the time to call Social security and talk to any

I have insurance through the Ky teachers retirement system. It leaves much to
be desired. It converts to Medicare in two years when I turn 65. My question is
can I be declared disabled and get Medicare now? I inquired about home health
making a daily visit to dress my wounds. The cost was $750 up front and a 30%
co-pay. I can't do thatat all. What do youse guys think? Btw, wife Melissa
has heart cath in the morning and is scheduled for defibrillator on Monday if
cath goes well. Prayers. Thanks.

Larry I think you qualify for Medicare now since you are disabled. Do you
receive Social Security Disability? I believe one would be primary and one
would be secondary insurance, just not sure which but your local social
security office should be able to help.

all of you who have colostomy's, do you guys still get some paintings or

The Sixth Sense. There is a comedian that did a very funny riff on this
premise. In the movie
the boy always whispers I see dead people, the effect of the whisper pulls
the audience in
and makes it more powerful. The comedian does a how it would really play
out, the key
phrase I see dead people is whispered and instead of Willis' psychiatrist
character having
an important reaction he says What? I didn't hear you, can you speak up!?
The boy keeps
repeating the line, I see dead people in ever louder whispers, and Willis
keeps saying What!!??
Still can't hear you. Finally saying something like, Look kid, for this to
work out you have to speak
loud enough for me to hear… Just cracked me up.

Interesting Question. There is no correct answer. There is no best
answer. That room, with all the new people, could be filled with some people

On the other hand, as you mentioned, the room could be filled with total

Hi Larry, My OT has me doing some exercises during the day for my
shoulder...swing my arm pendulum style ( swinging slowly back and forth )
about 3
sets of 5 several times a day. also and this seems to help the most is
while in bed raise your arm up past your ear without bending the elbow. This
is
easier while laying down because gravity helps. I try to do these every
day but mostly it is several times a week except for the ones while lying
down. Rose

Re: [QUAD-L] Fertility question

2014-01-06 Thread Todd Daugherty
I just want to chime in and say pregnancy is not a 50/50 chance. The estimate
for chances of getting pregnant are 20 percent to 30 percent per menstrual
cycle. (Harvard Med School). Even then, the chances will vary depending on
a number of factors (including age, current and past medical problems,
certain medication use, timing of intercourse, and the fertility of one's
partner) but many healthy, fertile couples are not pregnant even after six
months. It is common that couples only need to wait a bit longer and learn
more about the best time to have intercourse (based on the woman's
menstrual cycle, or ovulation pattern).

If vibro stimulation did not work I would think it is not being
administered properly or use a different model device that has proven to
work for others. We were able to do it the normal way so my story won't be
of help.

[QUAD-L] bed question

2013-10-08 Thread Danny Espinoza
Just browsing for a better bed... Anyone know a way to raise and lower an
entire queen sized bed? The flexfit plus that sleep number sells only does
the head and foot of the bed because I need that functionality.

Also my current mattress is a rotating pressure mattress to prevent bed
sores. What is everyone's thought on sleep number beds? I currently have a
hospital bed that can raise and lower the head, foot and entire bed. I've
been sleeping in an adjustable hospital bed for the last seven and a half
years and would really like a bigger bed that isn't a little hospital bed.

I just bought an Easy Rest queen size that has the functions your describing.
Head and knees AND bed has the Hi Low function.

Re: [QUAD-L] Work question....

2013-09-25 Thread Quad Dude
Danny,

You've gotten some great input on your work question particularly Bob's
detailed input on Web development and the suggestion to contact your local
Vocational Rehabilitation office for their assistance. I strongly concur
with the VR recommendation as they may have lines on jobs you are not aware
of and they may be able to assist you in paying for any training or
education you wish to pursue to enhance your skill sets.

One thing that is not well known is that while most federal government jobs
are only open to existing federal employees, there is an exception for
qualified individuals with disabilities. In fact, there are affirmative
employment programs in place that seek out individuals with disabilities
for employment and some of the positions are conducive to telecommuting
which can be extremely helpful to quads like us. I speak from experience
having worked federal IT related positions for 17 years until opting for an
early retirement five years ago. I also got my additional training and
internship for these federal jobs with the assistance of my state
Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. I'll be happy to elaborate if you have
any questions.

Best of luck in your quest for work.

there is one near you.

Online courses towards a will open up many opportunities. Add voice
recognition to your tech inventory (if u have not already done so).
Inventory of jobs by quads that I know personally include psychologists,
psychiatrist, published novelists, poetess, physiatrists (2), software and
application programmers, web developers et.al.

Danny, pick something that you love to do. Although you may not be physically
capable you can still provide positively to the endeavor by documenting,
advertising or teaching others.

Just don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do!
