Some time back Bruce made this offer. I asked for the copy [I think], but I
didn't get it.

Does anyone know what the latest version of AIM is that will work on a Quad?
Also might someone have a URL or could they send me a copy? URL preferred, if
one is going to send a copy would they please ask first? :-}

Hmm How about if you just install MacsBug and then install some MacsBug

Just got a Quadra 950

2002-08-20 Thread Robert Newman

Greetings:

I just got a Quadra 950 from my local Goodwill store. It had obviously been
sitting on the floor (too big for anyplace else) and had a lot of floorwax
build-up around it's base. Had only 8 1meg sticks of ram, and one harddrive
(unplugged) a 1.9 mb Quantum Fireball. When I turn it on it gave me the
happy Mac, and then played a series of chimes. I finally found that If I
unplugged the HD, and booted from a floppy, it worked fine. My question is
where can I find a service manual for this monster. I stuck an 80mb drive
in it and plugged it into position A on the SCSI cable, and it now boots
from the HD. I would, however, like to use the 1.9 mb, as 80 just isn't
very big. Also, if anyone has any extra side latches (the one that holds
the large side cover on) one of mine is missing. Also looking for some Ram
for it. Any help greatly appreciated. I have been looking for one of these
for a long time, and now I want to make it as nice as possible.

Thanks,
Robert Newman

I only knew 'cause I helped a friend set up a PowerMac G3 MT 300

I expect the Port Xpander was used to connect multiple Serial

Performa 637CD

2002-08-20 Thread Terry & Claire Hart

Hello. Thanks to everyone for the advice on the 660AV. I just read the
posts this morning. We will find a PRAM battery and go from there.

Now we have a Performa 637CD to get working. It came with a
standard-looking extended ADB keyboard except that it has a permanent cable
leaving the keyboard at the middle back (above the F9 key) rather than a
removeable cable that attaches from either the left or right. The
non-painted Apple logo is centered above the F9 key. There's one port in
the back that either the keyboard or the mouse attaches to.

Next, there's a 6ish-foot cable, with 8 pins and the Apple logo on each end.

Then there's a Macally Port Xpander that's interesting. First, there are
three ports that the above-mentioned cable will plug into. However, it
actually would accomodate 9 pins. The symbol above these ports is an up
arrow. The cable extending out is about 3 ft, and splits into two male
ends. One is the same 8 pins, with the arrow logo. This fits the modem &
printer ports. The other is the 4-pin ADB, BUT it is sort of a reverse-Y,
where you can plug another ADB into its backside.

With this hardware, I can't come up with the right combination to make the
keyboard and mouse work. Incidentally, the keyboard & mouse from another
computer do work.

Thanks for your time,
Claire

netscape is slow, but ...

2002-08-20 Thread c e

 ... didn't I recall a while back where a few listers
shared about a cache fix?

Pickle, iirc, weren't you open to getting the info
from someone or somewhere (I could review my older
emails to see who or where)seeing if it did work, and
if so, posting the links or even the actual 'how to'
on the faq?

I've been absent from the list for some time, so I may
have missed the final results or lack thereof, but I
checked the faq to be sure and didn't see anything
listed in the browser section.

I remember the fix made netscape go from loading in
14-21 seconds or so to as little as 2-4 seconds!

If anyone has done it actively on the list, please
share your findings! I'm not a big resedit guy (I've
changed my moss, and redrawn or replaced a few system
icons) but I'd love to use a 'souped-up' netscape any
day! :o)

Thanks all,
Craig

Links may be more feature-rich, but I wouldn't say it was better.

In my experience, lynx will render anything - it may not render it as you

You know, it's my very first Mac - so I'll never discard it! :-) For
answering letters, it's relatively good - also, it's very silent machine
(good for home use).

Hmm... Sounds strange - I've installed 7.6.1 on P-400 (10Mb RAM) for
about 30 minutes. The source was copied from CD-ROM to the another hard
disk before installation, and whole process was relatively fast...

NEC MultiSpin 3x: He's dead, Jim

2002-08-20 Thread Olin Jenkins

Greetings, Quadlisters:

I'm still setting up my Performa 476 to give away and tried to add this to it:

NEC MultiSpin 3x CD-ROM Reader, but I suspect it's dead.

Here's what happens: I'm running OS 8.1 and have tried both drivers
(the latest 5.31 driver, and even backtracked to the 5.0A driver
originally supplied with the reader). Upon startup, I see the SCSI
chain recognizes the drive (all the display controls flash for a
quick second). However, I cannot get the driver to recognize the
drive at all.

Is it completely dead, or is there another driver I can download to
try to get this thing to work? TIA, and peace

SLIP might work. Modems are kind of expensive, except for slow ones. I'd
avoid serial port networking, in any case.

My suggestion is to try a little harder. eBay always has lots of the things
you're looking for - an AAUI Tranciever and an LC-PDS Ethernet card. Olde
Mac Milt rocks.

This is an LC PDS Card
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2046896497
This is an AAUI Tranciever
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2047355666

That particular seller is very reliable, and the Buy It Now turns hectic
auctions into a piece of cake.

The wisdom of putting a Performa 400 on the internet is dubious -
essentially, it's a re-badged LC II, which is very, very, very slooow. The
Quadra 950 will rock though. To recap a recent discussion, recommended
browsers for the 950 are iCab (stable, moderm features) Netscape 2.0.2
(anything newer crashes, anything older lacks too many features) Internet
Explorer 2.1 (my personal favorite.) and any text-based browser: Linx,
Links, WannaBe, and others.

Either machine will work splendidly for email. I use Eudora Light 3.1.3 for
everything. Talk about a blast from the past! 4.2.2 works on 68k machines
as well, as does Outlook Expres 4.0. I'd avoid Outlook on the Performa 400.

Actually, I'd avoid the Performa 400 completely, but that's because I have
one, and I know how slow they are. Once, I did an install of System 7.6.1
on the LC II, and it took FOUR HOURS. Installing OS 9 on the G3 at work,
for comparison, took 12 minutes!

Re: 660AV

2002-08-20 Thread Michael Emery

Claire Hart <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Having the capability to connect that 660 AV to our TV
would really be nice for our journalism class.

I have two 660s that I alternately hookup to my home entertainment
system. One of these is setup to do just audio (with Digitrax), and the
other is setup to do video (with a SPRO and an 18GB hard drive). And my
spouse is pre-internet; right nowshe has a 660 on her desk for computing
with.

They are quite useful to me. With the one, I edit together a weekly
"preaching the Gospel" show -- by the late Bro. Bill Jones, not me --
that travels to a radio station in Africa and another station in Panama.
And with the other, I hope to someday put together an edit of my niece's
wedding video that I shot.

There's some hunt left in them old dogs! I give yours the three-finger
salute!

MozPong is freakin' awesome. I love that game, very addictive.
I haven't tried MaciGame... hmmm...

Escape Velocity works pretty well on 25 MHz 68040s. Works better on a 33
Mhz machine, though. EV: Override works pretty well too. Ares used to work
on 68040s... don't know if it still does. Maelstrom is great, and if you

Try downloading the beta of Internet Explorer 2.1 from
http://www.Pure-Mac.com/webb.html
I like it - use it on 68k macs and even on slow PPCs. It's nice, supports a
few modern features, inroes what it doesn't understand, and easily renders
twice as fast as Netscape.

Re: Internet access via serial port?

2002-08-20 Thread Ronald Bos

Hi Arthur,

I did this some months ago with a Centris 610 and it worked perfectly but
slow.
I used a cross-over serial cable, see
http://www.edprint.demon.co.uk/se/serial.html for wiring. And indeed the
Windows 98 PPP server. Furthermore, I used WinProxy on the Windows 98
machine. The windows machine was connected to the internet via a gateway.

Browsing the internet, I gained speeds of some 4 kB/sec. however, the Mac
was quite unresponsive, I guess the serial port took up a significant amount
of computing resources.

Hope this helps!

Internet access via serial port?

2002-08-20 Thread Artur Yelchishchev

Hello all,

I have two Macs - Quadra-950 and Performa-400. My desire is, to hook
both of them to my LAN (ADSL connection, shared between other machines
using Win98SE PC) for Internet access.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find required Mac hardware here
- for Quadra, I haven't AAUI adaptor, and Performa doesn't have NIC at
all. My attempts to obtain MuBus or LC-PDS cards weren't successful, so
I'm thinking about using serial ports for that purpose.

Is there a way to use some kind of serial connection between PC and Mac
- PPP, SLIP or the like? My Win98 machine has Microsoft's Dial-Up
Networking upgrade v1.4 installed, which allows it to act as 'server'
for incoming phone calls, but I don't know whether it's useable for the
Macs or not...

The best way, I believe, is to use cross-over serial cable, but even
pair of 'real' modems (chained via phone line emulator) will be
acceptable.

Maybe, someone here has some experience (or ideas) concerning similar
tricks?

Sincerely,
Artur

That sounds like what I expect to see! Only thing is only sr2 & sr3 exist which is
very odd
(and scd2 & scd3) where as even in penguin the scsi info says my cd should be sr0.

Though I think there may be some cd-rom problem as the drive has started to not work
under
MAC OS most of the time.

I'll see if I can dig out a spare drive and see if that works better.

Bah, another of my pet hates, P.S.'s in e-mail, hello it's a text editor you know, you
can go back
and change things, there is no need to PS ;-)

Anyway.

Lynx is ok, but there is a better text mode browser, it's called Links and it renders
sites correctly unlike
lynx, and has frames support, very fast even on old hardware! who wants gfx anyway.
Dunno if anyone's
done a mac port though, but you could always use debian i guess!!!

I happily browse on my quadra 800 - I use maclynx if I want text only
browsing (fast, but no pics, javascript, etc) and Netscape 3 if I want more.

I find Netscape 3 works for most of the sites I want to visit, and is
acceptably fast - even with my 33k modem.

Re: Confusion!

2002-08-20 Thread doctor

>where the confusion comes in for, in his reply Jag wrote, "FWIW, I
wouldn't
>recommend surfing on a 68k Mac to my worst enemy- it's simply a waste of
>time."

Having to use a 630 on my desk at work, I can tell you that the state of
browsers for Mac 68k is disgraceful. There's no really good reason why
these browsers should be SO slow. I have used a web browser on a 486
called Arachne running under DOS, and its twice to three times the speed
of anything on the a Macintosh which doesn't have a PPC chip. And that
browser does support graphics, tables, etc. etc.

That being said, it is possible to browse the web on a Mac 68k machine (I
do it every day). Here are some suggestions:

If you don't need secure connections, and are connecting to sites which
aren't graphic intensive use Netscape 2.02 with defrost. Its faster than
any other browser. But, like all Netscape browsers if you hit a modern
site with CSS or intense formatting, the browser chokes hard on the stuff
it doesn't understand. Netscape 2.02 will just crash. Under Netscape
4.08 (the last browser that works on a 68k Mac) it can mean many minute
waits. It doens't crash the browser, but it will cause it to enter into
looping error modes that take forever to recorver from. Meaning you're
sitting around with the machine seemingly locked up until it finally
grinds out the render (sometimes even the clock stops).

In a similar vein you can also use Cyberdog 2.0. Its actually a nice
little browser, and doesn't seem to choke like Netscape. Its funky
though in how it renders pages.

If you do want modern support, ICab is your only choice. It supports
everything, and renders very beautifuly. It also doesn't temporarily halt
at stuff it finds confusing (like Netscape). That being said, don't
expect a speed demon. I've seen starfish move faster than this browser
does on complex sites.

But say you don't need much in the way of graphics, and stuff, and just
want to get to the meat of the subject. My favorite browsing tool of all
is a browser called Wannabe. It doesn't do anything but display the text
of the web page, but it does make for a very pleasing experience to have
your pages display in a timely fashion.

Now there are also some tricks to speeding up these browsers. The most
popular being to store your browser cache in a RAM disk. It can
significantly speed up your experience. It made ICab fairly tolerable
on my machine. But, I have personally found that it tends to make for
more crashes. Now, I might be doing it wrong or something, but I found that I
couldn't live with the instability that this particular trick gave.

A nice trick about ICab is that you can just about turn off every feature of
ICab individually. I found that once you have almost everything turned
off (including graphics) that it made this web browser rather spry. That
being said, I figured if I didn't want any graphics I might as well stick to
Wannabe anyway since Wannabe still wins in speed because it doesn't format the
text.

I hope this helps out. I'm sure I'll get some disagreement on my
opinions, but they are what they are. Having to use a 68040 based machine
every day, I just wanted to let you know that browsing and a significant
amount of work can be done. That being said, don't expect it to be like
browsing on other machines. The Macintosh browser scene seems peculiar in
its lack of quality support for 68k machines.

David

P.S. Another web browser that is pretty cool in Lynx. Its text only like
Wannabe, but has more features and render modes. There is a 68k version
that some French guy had up for a while, but I've lost track of where you
can get it now. Its main problem is that its a port of a UNIX program.
Meaning its about as un-Mac-like as a Macintosh program can get. Still,
it might make for a good compromise between the bare-bones Wannabe browser
and a more featured browser like ICab or Netscape.

P.P.S. To locate some of this software try
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/browsers.html Mr. Gamba has just about
the neatest site for locating old browser type stuff. Check out his main
pages too: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/

Re. CD Drive acting oddly - PART 2.

2002-08-20 Thread mriscott

I had a look on my quadra 800 under linux, and found:

/dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0 -> /dev/scd0

So I guess my spouting earlier about /dev/sdx was castrated he-cows.

Do you have any /dev/scd*?

If not, maybe your cd hasn't been recognized???

It might also be worth trying booting off a ramdisk and seeing if you can find
the cdrom there? Or possibly trying a reinstall (last ditch idea).

Hope you get it sorted,

Ian
