Re: [q] OT - Wireless Access Point info
'admin'/'admin' is pretty standard. If worse comes to worse, you could pop open the case and look at the internals, from there you can figure out the chipset manufactuer and search for other routers with the same chipset (they may be the exact same one in a different package) and see if they provide documentation for default admin. Also, to make sure it is reset, hold onto the reset button for a while. Tom Abel wrote: Try 'admin' - Original Message - From: Don Wakefield [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Quadlist quadlist@mail.maclaunch.com Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 7:41 PM Subject: [q] OT - Wireless Access Point info This post is a bit off topic, but I hope someone can help. I have a House Branded Wireless Access Point purchased at CompUSA approximately 2 years ago (when they were blowing out the 802.11B only products to make room for the 802.11G's) At first, since I was the only kid on the block with wireless, I set it up naked and ran without wired equivalent protection settings. Recently I have noticed another signal in the neighborhood and it is now time that I locked my unit down! The problem is that in the two years since installing it and letting it sit, the unit no longer responds to the password I gave it. My guess is that it has regressed to the default settings possibly from one of our past power outages. I have pushed the reset button on the unit, (just to be sure we were starting from scratch,) and now need to have the Default password to get in. Naturally I cannot find the instruction manual and I am hoping that somebody in the group will have a similar unit and will be able to provide me with the missing password. Any ideas on how to start over would be appreciated. This is what I know about the unit: MAC address: 0008A1425AD7 DA CompUSA SKU: 295105 My guess is that it was originally made by CNet Technologies (but they no longer admit to any products before G's.) -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: New printer for Mac 637CD
I would think that many printers without the serial port would work with an ethernet printserver. Many printers can be purchased with this feature or it can be bought seperately (many routers can have one built in) or you can use a modern computer as the print server. I am pretty sure the mac can print to most printers over ethernet but you may have trouble finding drivers if they are needed. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Mozilla Thunderbird's appears to be similar in function but I haven't had a chance yet to really test it. Scott Holder Thunderbird has a great implementation of bayesean (sp?) filtering...train it for a while with spam mails (or save a bunch and do it at once) and it will do a pretty good job. I use outlook at home for other reasons (and its not hard to keep secure or from spreading a virus...people are just stupid) and I use Cloudmark's SpamNet but I was a beta tester so I do not have to pay for the service. Re: Quadra 610 DOS was (No Subject)
Also, unlike Apple, no versions of MS-DOS are really free. There are some other DOSes like DR-DOS that are, and even run Windows from what I've read, but no MS-DOSes. Doesn't mean they're not available, but, eh :) FreeDOS is quite free and 100% MSDOS compatible. As I recall, in the end MSDOS just ended up being the DOS that they shipped on the install disks for all the versions of windows (up until they dropped it). It makes sense because MS didnt have to pay anything to license it from another company. Other DOS versions would work just fine, I recall coming in contact with IBM's that ran PC-DOS under windows simply because it was IBM's product and they thought it would do a better job (and didnt have to pay license fees). If you only want DOS then FreeDOS is perfect, and if you want windows just run a windows installer. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Science fair project
Right. I totally agree. All of us here know Macs are supreme. But with a science fair, PC users passing by the booth aren't going to abandon everything they believe in because somebody told them to buy a Mac. There have to be black and white numbers showing the difference. G5 bench marks are a good way to show. While I agree that macs have the power (and I cant wait to see VT's G5 supercomputer benchmarks when they complete it), PC's have the cost pinned much lower than macs (as long as you dont pay too much for a label) the computers have their pluses and minuses and thats not what really needs to be argued here. For this science project, if he is asking on the quad list for macs, it would only be fair to use pc's of either the same age or the same price range (whichever would appear fit, but I think age would be more fair as price of old macs at thrift stores seems to be a bit lower than the same aged PC). If it is only done with old computers, you could provide a simple useability test and I think the mac would win. I have a q610 and it certainly does modern things faster than my 486 laptop that is newer, but I dont know of any real benchmarks to test that except the feel, try running a webbrowser and a few other common apps and see which feels faster for its age, its certainly not the thinkpad. -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Audiomedia II
Hi, I'm new to the list. I've got a Quadra 840AV running System 7.6.1 British. I'm trying to add a Digidesign Audiomedia II board and have been given the original installation disks for it. I have Digidesign sound driver 1.31 and Digisystem INIT 2.81 in my Extensions folder. My Sound Manager software is from Quicktime 2.5: Sound Manager 3.2.1 and Sound control panel 8.0.5. The two Digidesign extensions seem to load up fine (the INIT before the sound driver) with no crossed out icons. Yet I only get the default built-in audio in the Sound control panel. Is my hardware faulty (how can I test it?), or does anyone have any ideas I can try? just an idea but could it be that the card isnt accessable like the normal system sound is and (being its a high quality digidesign card not a standard system card that happens to have a mic in or something) is only available to protools or possibly other apps that have the same purpose however I would expect protools to be the best choice (as far as I know most digidesign hardware is only designed for their own software) -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: PhotoPrinter
a little OT but im just going to interject here, I have a stylus 760 (not directly attatched to a quad) but it uses the same ink cartridge as a 740 so I would assume the prints would be comprable (can get quite nice) but watch out wiht some of the glossy photo paper, epson premium quality glossy ink jet paper looks pretty nice (could bleed a little less and be sharper) but the gloss gets messed up and nasty really easy, dont touch it and put it under glass right away and it should be good. I would recomend for all your photo needs sticking with a matte paper (such as epson Matte Paper-Heavyweight) as it is more sturdy, the prints color and sharpness looks MUCH better (this is also true if you buy matte photo's at your local 24 hour photo instead of glossy) and it does not get messed up from contact. It will look better under glass than glossy will anyway. just my 2 bits... -Original Message- From: Quadlist [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Ian Moffatt Sent: Tuesday, February 11, 2003 4:17 PM To: Quadlist Subject: Re: PhotoPrinter Is there a decent printer for a Quadra that will allow the printing of photo's? Re: Chat Software
There aren't any multi-protocol clients for anything under OS X, AFAIK. The only two chat protocols supported on 68Ks other than IRC are AOL IM and ICQ. it may be possible to get GAIM (could try an older version of the software for less system requirments) to run on an old mac. you could either try to compile it to run in native mac OS or install debian and try to compile it for still linux but on a different architecture I have had a conversation with one of the developers of GAIM and they didnt see any reason why it would not be possible and couldnt think of any specific limiting system requirments - Otto Hansen -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: E Mail question
thats rather odd, windows should be able to open progressive jpegs just fine out of the box, however sending AOL instant messanger cant handle the pictures unless they are first saved from the IM window and then opened and since AOL email can open them just fine, I find that a little odd (AIM tends to have more features for free than AOL users are paying for) since you are emailing hte pictures you might as well not use p-scan (see if that solves the problem) because it would make the file size a little bit larger (a little little bit) and could make your saving/processing time longer. You dont really need it because with email they will probobaly have the whole picture downloaded before they view it and you dont need the low quality scans that p-scan jpegs create for the sake of people with slow internet connections -Original Message- From: Quadlist [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Denny Davis Sent: Tuesday, January 07, 2003 11:30 AM To: Quadlist Subject: Re: E Mail question At 11:36 PM -0500 on 12/25/02, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wittily wrote: I hope you and yours had a wonderful Christmas. q610 heat sink
I emailed olde mac milt about selling a heatsink without attatched processor and ended up paying $2+shipping now that I have it, I must say that its a rather funny shaped heatsink...the whole diamond and not covering the entire processor was something that im not used to and it doesnt seem to have much surface area to dissapate the heat from anyways...anyone have info on why this was teh chosen design for the 040? If I am going to be leaving the q610 on all of the time(I plan to apply thermal grease no matter what), would it be worth it to sand the top of the processor and bottom of the heatsink to make them smoother? Re: q610 heat sink
On my NeXTstation, which also has a 68040 on it, and a heatsink, the heatsink only covers the middle portion of the chip. That's because I think the outer portion of the chip is just pins and such, and no real heat-generating components. The inner section of the chip is the hot part. even so, i guess that I am just used to heatsinks that cover the entire chip (i.e: athlons) even if they dont touch it all but I guess that is just so they can clip on correctly or have enought surface area to dissapate the heat and also the way its designed seems so un-heatsink-like because its only a flat plate if metal withs bent tabs on the side and modern heatsinks have ribs or panes of metal (if you want to see some crazy use of silent heatsink only cooling, check out the zalman heatpipe vga coolers...) -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Sticking with the norm in Care to 'splain what that damage might be? well if you had to run the cable outside and it was struck by lightning you would lose both computers (or atleast their NICs) whereas with a hub (or a switch or a router with built-in hub/switch) you would most likely only lose the hub and 1 computer ;) -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Q610 (was RE: CPU Chip Speed)
In a 610, the CPU chip is very close to the power supply and that is a determining factor on the size of the heat sink. actually when I replaced the chip it was on the complete opposite side of the MB than the powersupply and I dont think anything else was in the way but when I bought the chip I was told it didnt need a heatsink so I dunno... -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... hard-drive install problem
I have a 9gb full height 5.25 scsi HD that I am trying to install in my Quadra 610 I have set the jumpers to what I think should work and hooked it up (ok so it doesn't fit in the case with the lid on but I can solve that later) and when I hit the power button, the computers power light comes on and the boot drive starts to spin up and all of the sudden (less than a second) the power cuts im thinking this could be too little power for the drive? it takes 25watts and I think the supply is only 83, I tried unplugging the other drive and just seeing if the big one would spin up but had the same power cut out I also thought it could be a problem with the power cable (I tried the one that was there in case I wanted a cdrom drive) but I tried the cable from the other drive and neither worked the drive is a SEAGATE ST410800N 9GB 50 PIN SCSI and came in a hotswap mount so I had to make due with the jumpers I had, but it should still work (I had to move the termination power jumper but the drive isn't terminated so I don't think it matters) please help me here Otto Hansen -- Quadlist is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: hard-drive install problem
the only problem with that is that they are kindof more expensive than I want them to be I dunno but the cheapest I found for a full height (really its double hight of cd drives but..I guess that's the standard way of measuring) scsi case was like $70 and I don't think it fed out to a mac external scsi port anyone know a cheap case that can do this? it wouldn't be too hard to make a case with a PSU a fan and room for a drive, I could even put the boot drive in there with it and keep the case cooler inside - Otto Hansen -Original Message- From: Quadlist [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of the pickle Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2002 11:06 PM To: Quadlist Subject: Re: hard-drive install problem At 22:53 -0500 on 14/08/02, otto hansen wrote: ok im gonna buy a 50watt or so powersupply and build an external case with it (I was planning on doing it anyways since it doesn't fit) my only problem is that I have searched and searched and I cant find any way to get from the external scsi port on the back of the computer into the standard ribbon cable port on the harddrive, is there any way to do this or should I just do as I was planning and run a bit of ribbon out the back of the case to my external case?
