Re: [q] OT - Wireless Access Point info

'admin'/'admin' is pretty standard. If worse comes to worse, you could
pop open the case and look at the internals, from there you can figure
out the chipset manufactuer and search for other routers with the same
chipset (they may be the exact same one in a different package) and see
if they provide documentation for default admin. Also, to make sure it
is reset, hold onto the reset button for a while.

Subject: [q] OT - Wireless Access Point info

This post is a bit off topic, but I hope someone can
help.

I have a House Branded Wireless Access Point
purchased at CompUSA approximately 2 years ago (when
they were blowing out the 802.11B only products to
make room for the 802.11G's) At first, since I was
the only kid on the block with wireless, I set it up
naked and ran without wired equivalent protection
settings. Recently I have noticed another signal in
the neighborhood and it is now time that I locked my
unit down!
The problem is that in the two years since installing
it and letting it sit, the unit no longer responds to
the password I gave it. My guess is that it has
regressed to the default settings possibly from one of
our past power outages. I have pushed the reset button
on the unit, (just to be sure we were starting from
scratch,) and now need to have the Default password
to get in. Naturally I cannot find the instruction
manual and I am hoping that somebody in the group will
have a similar unit and will be able to provide me
with the missing password. Any ideas on how to start
over would be appreciated.

This is what I know about the unit:

MAC address: 0008A1425AD7 DA CompUSA SKU: 295105

My guess is that it was originally made by CNet
Technologies
(but they no longer admit to any products before
G's.)

a 9gig should work. I have a beatiful 9.1gig 50pin scsi drive that I
could sell, just email me off list (the quad is no longer working but
the drive is just so cool that I kept it). I would part with it quite
cheap but I warn that it is a full height 5-1/4 hard drive not one of
those dinky little 3.5 drives we are all used to...but really thats why
I think it is so cool and kept it around (also, it just has this aura of

While a 9 GB capacity will work, the LC475 requires a 3.5 drive in
1/3 height or LP. A 5.25 drive will not fit in the case.

I'm guessing you have a Seagate Elite ST410800N. Those were nice
drives in their day, especially because they cost about $.40/MB back
when hard drives generally cost about $1.00/MB. But they're just too
large to fit in a Pizza Box Mac. I have one in a nice external SCSI
enclosure.

Jeff Walther

yup, thats exactly the drive I was reffering too. I warned about it
being full height 5.25 but I guess I forgot to mention that it never
actually fit in my Q610 (it would have fit in the CD space if it were
half height). It's still a beatiful drive that came in a hotswap
fitting when I bought it that I always thought it would be cool to have
a RAID rack of them.

How big a drive do you want to use? Im not quite sure but i dont think
theres much of a limit. You could probably put in a 9GB. Is that big enough?

Re: New printer for Mac 637CD

2004-01-18 Thread Otto Hansen
I would think that many printers without the serial port would work with an
ethernet printserver. Many printers can be purchased with this feature or
it can be bought seperately (many routers can have one built in) or you can
use a modern computer as the print server.

I am pretty sure the mac can print to most printers over ethernet but you
may have trouble finding drivers if they are needed.

I use outlook at home for other reasons (and its not hard to keep secure or

gets a very good amount of spam, sometimes a user will flag a new newsletter
as spam, but after a few people unblock it, it will stay unblocked.

Re: Quadra 610 DOS was (No Subject)

2003-09-20 Thread Otto Hansen
Also, unlike Apple, no versions of MS-DOS are really free. There are some
other DOSes like DR-DOS that are, and even run Windows from what
 I've read,
but no MS-DOSes. Doesn't mean they're not available, but, eh :)
FreeDOS is quite free and 100% MSDOS compatible.

As I recall, in the end MSDOS just ended up being the DOS that they shipped
on the install disks for all the versions of windows (up until they dropped
it). It makes sense because MS didnt have to pay anything to license it
from another company. Other DOS versions would work just fine, I recall
coming in contact with IBM's that ran PC-DOS under windows simply because it
was IBM's product and they thought it would do a better job (and didnt have
to pay license fees).

If you only want DOS then FreeDOS is perfect, and if you want windows just
run a windows installer.

Re: Science fair project

2003-09-17 Thread Otto Hansen

Right. I totally agree. All of us here know Macs are supreme. But with a
science fair, PC users passing by the booth aren't going to abandon
everything they believe in because somebody told them to buy a Mac. There
have to be black and white numbers showing the difference. G5 bench marks
are a good way to show.

While I agree that macs have the power (and I cant wait to see VT's G5
supercomputer benchmarks when they complete it), PC's have the cost pinned
much lower than macs (as long as you dont pay too much for a label)

the computers have their pluses and minuses and thats not what really needs
to be argued here. For this science project, if he is asking on the quad
list for macs, it would only be fair to use pc's of either the same age or
the same price range (whichever would appear fit, but I think age would be
more fair as price of old macs at thrift stores seems to be a bit lower than
the same aged PC). If it is only done with old computers, you could provide
a simple useability test and I think the mac would win. I have a q610 and
it certainly does modern things faster than my 486 laptop that is newer, but
I dont know of any real benchmarks to test that except the feel, try
running a webbrowser and a few other common apps and see which feels faster
for its age, its certainly not the thinkpad.

Re: Audiomedia II

2003-03-02 Thread Otto Hansen
Hi, I'm new to the list.

I've got a Quadra 840AV running System 7.6.1 British. I'm trying to
add a Digidesign Audiomedia II board and have been given the original
installation disks for it.

I have Digidesign sound driver 1.31 and Digisystem INIT 2.81 in my
Extensions folder. My Sound Manager software is from Quicktime 2.5:
Sound Manager 3.2.1 and Sound control panel 8.0.5.

The two Digidesign extensions seem to load up fine (the INIT before
the sound driver) with no crossed out icons. Yet I only get the
default built-in audio in the Sound control panel.

Is my hardware faulty (how can I test it?), or does anyone have any
ideas I can try?
just an idea but could it be that the card isnt accessable like the normal
system sound is and (being its a high quality digidesign card not a standard
system card that happens to have a mic in or something) is only available to
protools or possibly other apps that have the same purpose however I would
expect protools to be the best choice (as far as I know most digidesign
hardware is only designed for their own software)

Try the daw-mac list on Yahoo, the best people are there, and although
it is not exclusively a DigiDesign forum, there are a lot of people
there who are or were recently still in the land of Nubussia. Also,
you can go to the digi site and get on the DUC - digi users conference

a digi test for the Pro Tools stuff, and I think it or a similar
version is available for the AudioMedia cards, too.

Re: ADB Optical

2003-02-24 Thread Otto Hansen
Yes; I think a few were available for NeXT boxen, and there may have been
one
or two for the Mac as well.

They require special mousepads with reflective patterns, however; there
aren't
any modern LED-style optical mice for the ADB.
what are the pins in ADB used for? would it be possible to modify a modern
USB or PS/2 mouse to work with it? or repace some of the circuitry in the
ADB mouse (and the whole area with the ball, possibly a new case) with that
of a optical mouse so that it would work

Re: PhotoPrinter

2003-02-11 Thread Otto Hansen
a little OT but im just going to interject here,
I have a stylus 760 (not directly attatched to a quad) but it uses the same
ink cartridge as a 740 so I would assume the prints would be comprable (can
get quite nice) but watch out wiht some of the glossy photo paper, epson
premium quality glossy ink jet paper looks pretty nice (could bleed a little
less and be sharper) but the gloss gets messed up and nasty really easy,
dont touch it and put it under glass right away and it should be good. I
would recomend for all your photo needs sticking with a matte paper (such as
epson Matte Paper-Heavyweight) as it is more sturdy, the prints color and
sharpness looks MUCH better (this is also true if you buy matte photo's at
your local 24 hour photo instead of glossy) and it does not get messed up
from contact. It will look better under glass than glossy will anyway.

just my 2 bits...

Is there a decent printer for a Quadra that will allow the printing of
 photo's?

I have an Epson 740, which I think was the last of their range with a
serial port (as well as USB and parallel!). Although connected to my
network via an iMac it has on occasion been connected direct to various
Quads. Most recently when I had a problem printing from OS X, so I
hooked the 740 up to my Q950 and bingo!

Printing of A5 size photos is quite acceptable and with photo paper and
then under glass gives results that are good enough to hang on a wall.
And with scans taken from 35mm originals I've even got s couple of A4
concert prints up there too!

No idea about other makes of printer but this may have been of use.

Re: Chat Software

2003-01-19 Thread Otto Hansen
There aren't any multi-protocol clients for anything under OS X, AFAIK.

The only two chat protocols supported on 68Ks other than IRC are AOL IM and
ICQ.

it may be possible to get GAIM (could try an older version of the software
for less system requirments) to run on an old mac.

you could either try to compile it to run in native mac OS or install debian
and try to compile it for still linux but on a different architecture

I have had a conversation with one of the developers of GAIM and they didnt
see any reason why it would not be possible and couldnt think of any
specific limiting system requirments

Re: E Mail question

2003-01-07 Thread otto hansen
thats rather odd, windows should be able to open progressive jpegs just fine
out of the box, however sending AOL instant messanger cant handle the
pictures unless they are first saved from the IM window and then opened and
since AOL email can open them just fine, I find that a little odd (AIM tends
to have more features for free than AOL users are paying for)

since you are emailing hte pictures you might as well not use p-scan (see if
that solves the problem) because it would make the file size a little bit
larger (a little little bit) and could make your saving/processing time
longer. You dont really need it because with email they will probobaly have
the whole picture downloaded before they view it and you dont need the low
quality scans that p-scan jpegs create for the sake of people with slow
internet connections

This is a little late, but GraphicConverter has option to save as a
Progressive JPEG, the only thing is some PC people can't read this kind of
JPEG file even if you have named it something like mypic.jpg :-}

I know this because my girl friendf uses a PC and that is how I found out
about that she couldn't view a JPEG in the Progressive format.

The Solution is to do a Save As and make sure that you uncheck Progressive
checkbox, you should find it in the Prefs or in the Save Dialog there is a
Options button that you can click. Then send it again making sure that you
have .jpg at the end of the name. :-}

q610 heat sink

2003-01-07 Thread otto hansen
I emailed olde mac milt about selling a heatsink without attatched processor
and ended up paying $2+shipping

now that I have it, I must say that its a rather funny shaped heatsink...the
whole diamond and not covering the entire processor was something that im
not used to and it doesnt seem to have much surface area to dissapate the
heat from anyways...anyone have info on why this was teh chosen design for
the 040?

If I am going to be leaving the q610 on all of the time(I plan to apply
thermal grease no matter what), would it be worth it to sand the top of the
processor and bottom of the heatsink to make them smoother? Im not going to
be overclocking it but since it wont be turning off would this have any
noticeable stability benifit?

Re: q610 heat sink

2003-01-07 Thread otto hansen
On my NeXTstation, which also has a 68040 on it, and a heatsink, the
heatsink only covers the middle portion of the chip. That's because I
think
the outer portion of the chip is just pins and such, and no real
heat-generating components. The inner section of the chip is the hot part.

even so, i guess that I am just used to heatsinks that cover the entire chip
(i.e: athlons) even if they dont touch it all but I guess that is just so
they can clip on correctly or have enought surface area to dissapate the
heat and also the way its designed seems so un-heatsink-like because its
only a flat plate if metal withs bent tabs on the side and modern heatsinks
have ribs or panes of metal (if you want to see some crazy use of silent
heatsink only cooling, check out the zalman heatpipe vga coolers...)

well if you had to run the cable outside and it was struck by lightning you

Re: Q610 (was RE: CPU Chip Speed)

My mistake, it was the hard drive and cables near the chip.
ahh yes the cables could possibly get in the way (or melt themselves on the
heatsink) but I think I have to build a new case for the 610 anyways in
order to make room for a fullheight drive and aditional powersupply (and a
few ccfl tubes)

Re: Q610 (was RE: CPU Chip Speed)

In a 610, the CPU chip is very close to
the power supply and that is a determining factor on the size of the heat
sink.
actually when I replaced the chip it was on the complete opposite side of
the MB than the powersupply and I dont think anything else was in the way

but when I bought the chip I was told it didnt need a heatsink so I dunno...

And it wont let me choose anytyhing but uncorrected gamma on the dimmer

Is there any contorl panel or something that will let me change the gamma on

I know you could calibrate displays and choose whatever gamma you want in

Re: Mac II Needs Adoption

2002-11-19 Thread otto hansen
Thanks, anyway. Would you know of any sources for MAC software on
diskettes, especially Chess, math programs, vocabulary programs for kids?

I would suggest making your own disks, its not hard to find the software and
blank disks are cheap. You can use hfsutils (google for it, I dont know
where it came from) to write to mac disks if all you have is a PC connected
to the internet

Re: Eudora Pro 4.2.1 Demo Registration

2002-11-17 Thread otto hansen
I'm currently using it by setting the
clock back, opening Eudora and setting the clock ahead. When the
alerts come up, I wait for the task to finish then hit Cancel but
this is not a workable long term solution.

well you could try searching the sites at www.astalavista.com for cracks or
serials but it would probobly be hard to find because its old and its for a
mac

you might also be able to increase your demo period or stop it allthogether
with a registry editor

Re: HTML graphics in email Was: Top vs. Bottom Posting

2002-11-17 Thread otto hansen
occasionally I receive mails where the html is helpful such as ebay auction
receipts and a few newsletters that happen to be in html and personally I
think that the email standard could use a little bit more formatting power
than it currently has... maybe not graphics (even though many people use
them all the time now) but the ability to format into say tables or have
control of justification

Re: Top vs. Bottom Posting

2002-11-16 Thread otto hansen
I tend to top post and just delete the stuff on the bottom if it gets long
but I feel that its sometimes nice to have a reference to the previos post
in case someone needs it but I never leave more than one message and (like
in this message) I often delete it all.

I use outlook2000 on my wintel box and there probobly is a way to get it to
bottom post but I havnt looked hard enough to find it and I find that
outside of lists it is nice to have the message there even if someone isnt
directly replying to points but if you dont need it you dont have to scroll
through it, its just there (but NO ATTATCHED PREVIOUS MESSAGES grr..I hate
that) for example I was exchanging emails with an administrator at my school
and there were always several days between mails and it was nice to have the
previous message in its entirety at the bottom and im pretty sure its my
school districts policy to have the previous message at teh bottom of all
replys

Re: FAQ update and fix

2002-11-03 Thread otto hansen
hmm

If someone could get me a dump of maybe just one of hte sections, I could
have a partial mirror of it (from a Q610 running debian as a server) as long
as I have room on my 9gb drive

I cant do this however until I get a working DSL connection again
at that point I may consider this (but probobly limited bandwidth or
usercount, but that shouldnt be too big a problem considering the size of an
old mac driver or software)

Lots of 68k macs

2002-10-07 Thread otto hansen

I saw on ebay today a truckload of 68k macs, monitors, printers, and
software,

go into the 68k section or search for truckload 68k or something

it was a really good price on kindof a must sell basis

good deal it looks if your in california(cant remember where but they will
deliver to the bay area)

BTW: I am in no way affiliated with this seller, I just saw the auction and
thought I would pass it on

Spoke with my partner and fellow CNE about this and he agrees with me. If
you just want to connect for internet access and don't need to access
files, you should be okay using an IP address. If you need to log into the

If he uses Border Manager and has it locked down, you'll need the client

hard-drive install problem

2002-08-14 Thread otto hansen

I have a 9gb full height 5.25 scsi HD that I am trying to install in my
Quadra 610

I have set the jumpers to what I think should work and hooked it up (ok so
it doesn't fit in the case with the lid on but I can solve that later) and
when I hit the power button, the computers power light comes on and the boot
drive starts to spin up and all of the sudden (less than a second) the power
cuts

im thinking this could be too little power for the drive? it takes 25watts
and I think the supply is only 83, I tried unplugging the other drive and
just seeing if the big one would spin up but had the same power cut out

I also thought it could be a problem with the power cable (I tried the one
that was there in case I wanted a cdrom drive) but I tried the cable from
the other drive and neither worked

the drive is a SEAGATE ST410800N 9GB 50 PIN SCSI and came in a hotswap mount
so I had to make due with the jumpers I had, but it should still work (I had
to move the termination power jumper but the drive isn't terminated so I
don't think it matters)

please help me here
Otto Hansen

Re: hard-drive install problem

2002-08-14 Thread otto hansen

ok im gonna buy a 50watt or so powersupply and build an external case with
it (I was planning on doing it anyways since it doesn't fit)

my only problem is that I have searched and searched and I cant find any way
to get from the external scsi port on the back of the computer into the
standard ribbon cable port on the harddrive, is there any way to do this or
should I just do as I was planning and run a bit of ribbon out the back of
the case to my external case?

If it's really a 5.25 FH drive, how did you FIT it in there? :)

im thinking this could be too little power for the drive? it takes 25watts

Good guess. If that drive is drawing 25W to spin up, the PSU can't do it.

Re: hard-drive install problem

2002-08-14 Thread otto hansen

the only problem with that is that they are kindof more expensive than I
want them to be

I dunno but the cheapest I found for a full height (really its double hight
of cd drives but..I guess that's the standard way of measuring) scsi case
was like $70 and I don't think it fed out to a mac external scsi port

anyone know a cheap case that can do this? it wouldn't be too hard to make a
case with a PSU a fan and room for a drive, I could even put the boot drive
in there with it and keep the case cooler inside

Why not just use a normal external HD case but put a high-capacity PSU in
it?
They have normal SCSI connectors on them, which will simplify your life a
lot.
