Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Napster problems
Michael, I'm facing the problem as well. No Napster on Squeezebox Radios for my kids. - I removed the account on mysb.com, then added it again - checked that I could play Napster anywhere else (i.e. Napster App). - activated debug log, here is the message that I get over and over again. We do have different UI philosophies - I try to keep more space around menu items and buttons which makes the UI look cleaner and it also doesn't have as much buttons around on the main screen which often do confuse some users (or are hard to hit, when they are small). Also I stick to the menu philosophy of the Squeezeboxes, which makes it easier for people to switch between devices, as they don't have to remember different paths in the menus ... stuff like that But I want to repeat: "it boils down to personal preference" and typically me and pippin do have very different opinions about that and used to start arguing a lot about what is better. I wouldn't be too sure about downgrading a real UE Radio. It might be different Hardware and while the 10.0 firmware supports all hardware, the 7.7 firmware might only support 'old' Radios. When you start to want to use services (i.e. Spotify) und you enter the "Add Music Services" menu you are told to either download the Controller App or to go to uesmartradio.com (the new mysqueezebox.com). I just went to the website and created an account - and for some reason it automatically detected my Radio and connected it to the newly created account. Wow. Damn I didn't record the Javascripts used, they would have interested me. Now when I try to open a second fake account, it says I should be entering the Settings menu on the Radio where I can create a Pin to connect the Radio to my account. Guess this is people will see, that got a Radio via Ebay and need to move it from one to another account. Still dead easy and good instructions that guide you through the process. At this point I'm still impressed - someone did put some thoughts into the procedure of slowly introducing new users and not overwhelming them with stuff they probably won't need. Now I also downloaded the iOS App - this one asks you about the account as the very first thing. Wow - this App has only one good looking screen (the starting one, with the big tiles you can see in the AppStore pictures). The rest of screens is plain ugly - at least they are functional and easy to use. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Upgrade SB Radio to UE Radio
The old instructions on the Wiki for some reason didn't work for me (wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom.baby.version). Here is how I installed UE on my bathroom Radio (at your own Risk - Michael said right now there is now way back, didn't test that yet): - download firmware from http://update/firmware/10.0.0/baby_10.0.0_r16943.bin - with winscp copy it to the Radio. Preferred to the folder /media on the Radio. For me this didn't work though, due to the limited space on the Radio. But a trick will do: Copy the file to the folder /dev. It's a different partition with enough room. Then ssh into the Radio and create a symlink from /media to the /dev Code: cd /media ln -s /dev/baby_10.0.0_r16943.bin baby_10.0.0_r16943.bin - Now enter your Radios menu and go to Settings -> Advanced -> Update firmware. You will get an option for version 10.0.0 After a reboot you will see the UE|Logitech boot screen, the a 'connection to uemedia.com' and finally a new menu. Couldn't do a lot of tests, but first impression: - it's now a blue menu instead of "teal", but that was said by Michael already - No forced login or creating of an account needed - reordered menus: Internet Radio is now (almost at the top), followed by "Music Services", only the we have "My Music". - Browing into "My Music" automatically detects the UEMediaServer installed on my Mac and I can browse my own music. - Sync menu is still there under Settings (but we were told that already) - No way to activate remote access: so probably indeed no way back right now :) If we think of new unexperienced users - getting started is dead easy is. bluegaspode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Reduces one big problem that new users typically have users. - is playlist editing available in the iOS Controller? - is the Controller a native App or based on the same technology you use now? - is there still an option to sync devices? - will firmware and the server code keep OpenSource or did you switch to closed source now? While of course I don't like seeing Squeezeboxes to phase out, this product (if it supports syncing) would still be a viable alternative to me compared to Sonos. - it has knobs (the main missing piece of a Sonos, which still is the #1 reason I don't buy into them) - I'd still have hope, that Logitech (with reduced support and more happy users) is successfull with this new product and over the time adds a stereo device and a speakerless device. Porting the firmware to the Touch would be a breeze - maybe just do a small case, where the USB port + SD-Card port is not visible anymore. Noone would ever ask again, if that little thing with a nice screen that can be connected to the receiver could act as a server. - NAS manufacturers will keep providing packages with the new server software. bluegaspode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96188 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

If the clock is unreliable and the NTP tasks always adjust the time so that you just have a feeling of a good clock ... then it confuses the Squeezeboxes timer so much, that it fires late. The current Squeezebox timer just counts milliseconds until the next alarm, so isn't aware of your NTP task skipping/adding some milliseconds. That's why there is a workaround proposed in the other thread. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Your server is 30seconds late to provide the alarm trigger. This is either because it is not fast enough to wake up (as mentioned), or because it has a very unreliable clock if it runs 24/7. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Hypothetical Situation
Hi phred, this is all expected behaviour. - when your server is off, noone can tell the Radio what stream to play (the Radio only remembers the time of the very next alarm itself). So it will always play the Fa Fa Fa sound when there is no server. - the fallback alarm has a little delay. The Radio hopes all the time, that the server maybe is just a little bit slow with providing the necessary information about the alarm (i.e. what stream to play). - The Radio does not expect that you have speakers on the headphones out. It always expects headphones - and assumes that with high probability noone has headphones on in the morning. That's why alarms always come through the speakers. One final thing to note about the backup alarm: you should always configure the alarm via the Radio itself. If you are using the web-interface (or a remote on your phone or tablet) to change the alarm time then in the worst case your Radio is not really connected to the server (and thus never gets notified about the new alarm time). Then the fallback alarm also is not configured at the right time. If you configure the alarm directly on the Radio then you realize if it still has a connection to your server. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Weird alarm behaviour
While the situation on mysb.com might be indeed very unreliable, I still have to note that with my local server me and my wife still do wake up every morning with the configured radiostation. This is at least since september when my wife started getting up before me. I cannot remember a single failure since then. Having said that: don't expect Logitech to change anything anymore on the alarm code anymore. So either you want to help yourself by following some simple advises/workarounds (i.e. when using MySqueezebox.com, use some odd time like 6:57 and if that still does not help don't insist on using a sound effect but switch over to a radio station) or follow the route Marc suggested: use something different otherwise you won't be happy with your Radio. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Actually the fallback alarm should be fading in (what firmware are you using on the Radio ?). One also has to know, that the "sound effects" are also streamed from MySqueezebox.com (which might not be the most reliable streaming service around). I suggest to either use - a different alarm time (one or two minutes off your current time) - a different alarm tune (either try a radio station indeed, it might be more reliable. If you are using your own server you might also want to add some "sound effect" to your local library as an alarm, just to avoid streaming from MySqueezebox.com). -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. To fully customize the Now-Playing screen you should have a look into erlands "CustomClock" applet/plugin (search the wiki and this forum for more information). It's not just about clocks anymore, but you can render almost everything with it (it does of integration for the fields available from SuperDateTime). My Weather Applet might be an alternative to superdate-time as well. Personally I'm also using the "ScreenSwitcher" Applet (from erland) together with the "AlbumFlow" Applet (from erland). So in my environment Clock+AlbumFlow+Weather toggle at given intervals. First of all: if the main alarm is a fallback alarm, then the Radio does not trust the server or stream anymore. Each consecutive Snooze will be the fallback tune as well. Now for your main alarm for some reason the stream just did not start to stream. At 05:59:58 your Radio gets the command to start the iPlayer stream At 06:00:00 it gets the signal to show the alarm window The Radio then check 6 times (every 5 seconds) if the stream started already At 06:00:30 it decides that the stream must have failed and starts the fallback. As said after the Snooze times the Radio does not try the stream anymore. It's in 'survival' mode :) So the overall timing of the alarm is perfect, nothing wrong with the SqueezePlug. In your case either BBC or the special iPlayer plugin is spoiling your alarm experience. As iPlayer didn't exist for you when you used MySB.com - what stream did you use then? How did you configure the iPlayer stream as alarm? Did you make a station a favourite or did you use any other way? In the logs it shows, that the Radio tries to connect to the stream http://87.248.208.77/stream/bbcmedia_lc1_radio2_q?s=1317756434&e=1317770834&h=eaa33a84ac0016a521858c996d38af02 When I call it myself I get the error "unauthorized URL", so I think the way you configured iPlayer as alarm tune creates a stream link that does not work anymore in the morning. Maybe configuring it differently makes it behave better? Another possibility would be to put the iPlayer stream into a playlist and then use the playlist as alarm tune? Maybe this makes the stream behave better (or iPlayer providing a working URL in the morning) -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Ok - I never changed snooze and alarm timeout (If you don't need to change them all the time, one can hack into the Touch and also change the values for the internal server once). Having iPad and Android phone I also never use the web-interface. That on MySB.com playlists can be used (and not on the Touches server) is new to me. So - given your requirements - yeah - the internal server lacks some feature for you, so right now the only two options are to go back to MySB.com and hope that Logitech fixes the alarm routines there - or upgrade to a full blown Squeezebox-Server (easiest route being the use of a featured NAS I guess) -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] SB Radio Alarm has recently stopped working (audiostate is 0???)
Your servers clock is not reliable / it is driftung too much. Only at 6:00:12 it is sending the stream to play to the Radio (should be 6:00:00) - so the Radio already checks if a stream is playing (and it is not in this instant). Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] alarm defaults to DISCO all the time
Fine that it is working. The bugfix is for servers that don't keep their time by themselves (running to slow). Users typically don't realize, because their server corrects the time each hour against a timing service on the net. The SBS server just counts down the seconds until the next alarm is due and without the patch it does not realize that the servers clock is changed all the time by small amounts. This is why the server will typically triggers the alarm too late (and the Radio keeping its own time decided to sound the fallback earlier). You need to register on bugzilla (the page of the bug report), then you can post a comment. There is also a checkbox to vote for it. You will then also be notified if someone else comments on the bug or when Logitech decides to fix it. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Hi ricou, your server is triggering the alarm correctly. The one day where the alarm did not work the radio stream just wasn't fast enough to start playing. So the first thing I'd suggest is trying another radio stream if it gets more robust. Some more odd things I notice in the logs: - you are still running 7.5.1 firmware. You should be trying 7.6.1 - it contains some fixes against radio streams that need a bit longer to start. - the date in the log is from January. But be aware, the Radio itself only remembers the next alarm to be able to sound the fallback. If it sounded the fallback alarm and then for some reason cannot communicate with the server / MySb.com the next day it will keep silent when the server still fails to trigger the alarm because it does not know the next alarm time. So when one hears the fallback it's a good idea to enter the alarm time settings as well to make sure the Radio talks to its server properly at least once. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] alarm defaults to DISCO all the time
Hi Chris, the logs shows a working alarm on Aug 25th. Here is everything as it is supposed to be: at 6:43 the radio gets the signal from MySB.com to play your desired stream On Aug 26th this signal is completely missing. So in your case this is a bug from MySB.com, one cannot blame the Radio or the stream. I suggest opening a support case for Logitech. I guess their first answer will be to try out all sort of things: (reverting firmware, changing the stream, ...) but insist that this log proves that MySB.com didn't send the needed signal to start the alarm and Logitech needs to investigate this on their end. You might also point to this thread to show them that you spent some serious time to investigate the issue with us. In the meantime my best advice is, that each evening you enter the alarm setup window and enter the setting where you can change the time. Don't change it, just hit the big button so that this time gets resend to MySB.com. This *might* reset the timers on MySB.com so that it gives you a correct signal the next morning. Would be interesting if this helps, as this would show that MySB.com is 'good enough' for a single alarm, but not for an alarm series. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. You are connected to MySB.com only? - did schedule the alarm directly on the Radio (and not MySB.com) ? - did you try a different radio station, maybe this one is not reliable ? - did you try a different time (some minutes before your actual time, 6:57 instead of 7:00) ? if these three things don't help you might want to download the log files from your Radio. In the advanced settings there is on option to enable remote access. With the program WinSCP you can then download the file /var/log/messages to your computer and attach it here. There will give us a more directed idea about what is the exact cause of the failure. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Yep - it's possible - but takes some time (which Logitech does not have I guess). The problem is that right now the Radio constantly talks to the server when streaming ('hey I'm at minute 1:23 of that stream') to allow for all remotes to show the progress bar. So if the Radio just startet, the server would be very confused. Guess it's alot of code to change to make the Radio not talk to the server again (and have the Radio not stop the stream, when the server wants to take over again). And then come the people that want to configure their alarm via their iPhone or the Webinterface and are unhappy if that's not possible. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. A company called SlimDevices (later bought by Logitech) created slim devices. They were really dumb, had a display (the content was provided by the server) and could play streams (when told so by the server). Classic + Boom still belong to these 'slim' devices. Then came Controller+Radio+Touch running a full Linux, but the architecture stayed the same. Only some extra code on the client was created to account for all possible server problems (i.e. the fallback alarm). The Radio even today does not know what stream to play when its time for the alarm - that's why it still needs a trigger at the right time from the server. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Good to hear it's still working :) You should leave a comment on the bug report I posted earlier, so that it is officially documented that a 1week test confirmed better operation of the Radio. Logitech had this bug in their bug meeting yesterday by the way - unfortunately they never leave a comment about their conclusion. So noone will know what they actually talked about - if they like the proposed fix or not or if they are afraid of other sideeffect. Unfortunately they will forget themselves as well, when someone looks into the bugs in 6 months ... *sigh* ttodd1;648180 Wrote: > I just want to ask to see if anyone else with the 7.6 update for the > radio has had this happen. Cannot help here. I belong to those, that don't install x.x.0 version - my wife wouldn't be amused :) so you need to wait for 7.6.1 before I can do testing myself. But I remember that the 'Back' button feature was a hack, so it's likely that it can be easily broken given all those drastic changes in the 7.6 codebase. > > I also noted 1 more 'fix' that maybe this code may have corrected. > After my Friday alarms the icon of course goes away (it is only set to > M-F) from the radio display, but come Sunday when I went to bed it > never came back unless I started 1 of the presets. This was a bug in 7.5 and indeed fixed by Logitech themselves. I think it was already fixed in 7.5.5, but am not sure. But you are right: with older firmware one had to do one powercycle on Sunday to see the icon again. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Always fallback alarm
Hi cran, yes these ntpd logs seem to show the culprit. The internal clock runs too slow and as the timer of the Squeezebox server is using a 'monotonic' clock as to the documentation, it does not adopt. ntpd ajusts the server time, but Squeezebox Server right now does not care. I'll try tweaking the server code myself a bit maybe tonight or on the weekend, to use this other timer function, maybe we can achieve something. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarms on the radio
ttodd, In your server log at around 5:00 the following lines appear: Code: [11-08-04 05:01:28.9501] Slim::Utils::Alarm::sound (508) Alarm triggered for Master Bedroom Radio [11-08-04 05:01:28.9520] Slim::Utils::Alarm::sound (519) Alarm is 88 seconds early/late - ignoring So for some reason your server is 'late' when triggering the alarm. As the Radio does not get any signal at 05:00 from the server it decides to sound the fallback alarm. This is the same problem as described here (with some more analysis from my side) http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=646306 Now unfortunately I don't have any idea what could make your server have such an unstable timing. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Always fallback alarm
I looked into the code around the message that the alarm will be ignored and found the following text: # Check if this alarm is still current - we could be running really late due to hibernation or similar ok - this gives a little clue, but you said your server does run 24/7. So I digged a bit deeper into the code to see how the timer are internally scheduled within SBS. As it turns out, a third party library is used, where the following interesting comment for the 'timer' function is given: - The timer is based on a monotonic clock, that is, if somebody is sitting in front of the machine while the timer is running and changes the system clock, the timer will nevertheless run (roughly) the same time. I interpret this that the seconds are just counted down - if the server hibernates or sleeps for 5mins the timer would trigger 5mins later. Also when there are daylight saving changes in the night, the server would not respect them, which is a but strange for an alarm clock. Another interesting comment there: - The timer does his best not to drift, but it will not invoke the timer more often then once per event loop iteration, and might drift in other cases. If that isn't acceptable, look at EV::periodic, which can provide long-term stable timers. - Aha - a hint to a better method! So well. For some reason the timer drifts on your computer (maybe because your computer sleeps for a very short time in the night), but I guess we will never find out why. And SqueezeboxServer uses a function that isn't foolproof against drifts. Are you happy trying out some new code? I'm no perl programmer so what I'm suggesting might not work at all, but maybe we can change the one line responsible for all timers, to use this more robust function. Based on the documentation found here: http://search.cpan.org/~mlehmann/EV-4.03/EV.pm SB-Server currently uses the function: Code: $w = EV::timer $after, $repeat, $callback and a better one would be Code: $w = EV::periodic $at, $interval, $reschedule_cb, $callback Looks easy to change indeed. In Squeezeboxserver this line is called in the file Slim/Utils/Timers.pm around line 231 (the last line of this snippet): Code: sub _makeTimer { my ($objRef, $when, $subptr, @args) = @_; if ( !defined $objRef ) { $objRef = ''; } my $now = EV::now; # We could use AnyEvent->timer here but paying the overhead # cost of proxying the method is silly my $w; $w = EV::timer( $when - $now, 0, sub { I'd suggest changing the last line to Code: $w = EV::periodic($when, 0,0, sub { then restart the server and try some simple alarms first if we broke anything. If these are working schedule your normal alarm and then we'll see what happens. If it really works we could start a bug report in the hope that Logitech reviews this fix and integrates it into the server. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Are you configuring alarms directly on the Radio? Or via the WebUI? Try to configure it on the Radio - only then you can make sure, the Radio really knows about the alarm time. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Always fallback alarm
Heinz, for some reason at 6:50 your server is not sending the alarm signal to the radio. This is why your Radio decides to sound the fallback alarm, because it does not know what stream to play. At 7:00 everything works as expected. The server actively tells the Radio to start the alarm. One interesting thing: at 6:50:24 your server sends a 'clear all alarms' message to the radio, which (if I remember it right) only happens when the server is starting. But then I don't see any server connected/disconnected messages which typically happen when the server is down. So we need to find out why the server misses to signal the first alarm. Is your server going into standby or does it hibernate in the night? How long does the server need to start-up. The Radio tries to wake the server up 5min before the alarm, maybe this is not enough (though 5min actually is very long). I think in your case the server log (with activated debug logging on channel 'player.alarmclock') might help us to see what's up on the server side (though I'm not very experienced with the server code, but it might give some clues). -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Please post a bigger part of the log. I guess you alarm was scheduled at 5:00:00 ?? But the entries only start at 05:00:39 ? Or was the alarm scheduled at 05:01:00 ?? In this case it's strange that your Radio was in fallback mode already before and somehow got snoozed. This 'pagefault' message is also not a good sign - somehow the internal memory is corrupt. I'd suggest rebooting your Radio first - it's in a very strange state right now. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 7.6 Alarm problem
There was only one particular issue fixed: Some radiostation (often seen with BBC iPlayer) switch their Stream-URL around even clocks. This leads to a small gap where there is not sound, which made the backup alarm fire. Now the alarm code give the stream about 5 tries (I think) to play some tune again and recover. Nothing else has been done to the alarm code (except changing the looks of the alarm popup) to my knowledge. So we'd still need to analyse your current logs directly on the Radio to see what might be the issue with your alarms. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Mobile App - Missing features
The Logitech App is essentially a big HTML file with Javascript. Using PhoneGap and SenchaTouch as far as I know. It will look exactly like that on Android. In the end the design decision was to just have one codebase for the major two phone OS. If you want to manage your alarms and have native App go for SqueezePad or iPeng. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. I wouldn't think it should do this annoying thing. It only goes to fallback alarm, if it realizes a (even very short) network error or if the radio stream disconnects. Did you try already another stream, just to see if it gets more reliable? Apart from that, one can activate Remote access to the Radio in the Advanced Settings, then with a program like WinSCP connect to the radio and download the file '/var/log/messages'. Here the exact failure/cause for the fallback alarm will be logged. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device. Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Alarms on the radio
When the first alarm sounds but not the second one, maybe your router only then establishes an internet connection? Also one easy thing to try is to put the alarm to an odd time like 6:57. Chances are high that less people put load on your radiostation at this time and it streams more reliable. -- bluegaspode Did you know: *'SqueezePlayer' (www.squeezeplayer.com)* will stream all your music to your Android device.
