[SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-11 Thread jamesg1979

Just got my lurvely radio :D

1. Why is the album art bigger than the screen, i.e. it only shows
about 3/4 of the image zoomed in

2. For some reason nearly all of my albums appear as the Wedding Singer
sound track album art!?!?

What can I do about either of these please?

Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-11 Thread usch

1. Because people complained that the cover art was so small and left so
much of the screen unused, so they enlarged it.

Unfortunately the landscape orientation of the display is not really
suitable to display a square image together with two rows of text above
and a status bar below, you will always have either unused space or the
edges cut off. It should be configurable to what you like better.

2. Someone has reported a similar behaviour of his Controller, maybe
this is a related bug?

Can you give us some detail about how you store the album art? Also,
what type of music files (mp3, FLAC, etc). Is the album artwork
embedded in the tags, saved in the album folder as folder.jpg or
cover.jpg, saved in a separate folder, managed through iTunes?

Hi there, please bear with me on this. I've never really used or taken
notice of album art before because it didn't interest me until I got the
sexy radio.
I don't use Itunes and the itunes section is not ticked on the server.
90% MP3 and 10% FLAC that's it.

I did a quick search in My Music for jpg files and it returned 189
results, this seems a little low especially as some of these are CD art
and the back covers of the album.
Most of them are called things like "Kaiser front.jpg" or
"thenameofthealbum front.jpg".
I haven't got them saved in a separate folder, all of these files
reside within their respective album folders.

In terms of tags, I don't know the answer to this, I did use MP3Tag on
about 3 albums before I lost patience.

I'm not at my PC at the moment, but I think I'll check the same song on
WMP11 to see if this problem is exclusive to the SB or not - I've never
noticed repeated album art before to be honest but as I mentioned
earlier nor have I taken too much notice.

That's rubbish :( I'd prefer too small to too big, when you say "it
should be configurable to what you like better" is that a fact, if so,
where do I change this or is that a "I wish it could be configurable"

Sorry, I could be reading it too literally. :D

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-12 Thread MrSinatra

u need to first concentrate on getting the right art put together.

here is what i suggest:

all your music should be in some kind of logical folder order, ie:

root\music\artist\album\

and then you need one jpg in the album folder. ie: Folder.jpg

i would not use embedded art, meaning art in the file. but if you do,
it has to be in each file on the album.

how do you get the art? use google image search, or a pgm like bliss,
many apps get art one way or the other.

As far as I can see that's about all you have to do. Make sure you have
each album in a separate folder, and the cover artwork is called
folder.jpg. The exact folder structure doesn't matter and extra artwork
will be ignored.

I prefer to embed cover images in the audio files (because having
thousands of files all called "folder.jpg" is prone to cause confusion
someday), but that doesn't work with each file format and could be a lot
of work in your case, depending on the size of your music library.

Thanks Sinatra,

So let me get this clear in My Music currently I have loads of folders
(and individual songs) but I could have 3 folders for three albums by
the same artist in there such as Daft Punk - Homework, Daft Punk -
Discovery, Daft Punk - Live in Berlin.
Instead, I should have one folder called Daft Punk and in there the
three album folders?
Is that right? Will that make a lot of difference as it's quite a lot
of work? Should any individual songs also be in those folders as that
would be horrible!!

Then get rid of irrelevant jpg files (back covers/CD covers) which only
leaves me with one file. Rename that file to folder.jpg.

please understand my advice is what i consider to be "best practices"
but others may disagree. however if you follow it it will work good for
just about every app, including SBS.

in any case, yes, i would have my folders as:

root\music\Daft Punk\Homework\
root\music\Daft Punk\Live\
root\music\Daft Punk\Discovery\

and if i had random DP songs, then you could create

root\music\Daft Punk\random\

obviously put the right files (songs) in the right folders, and put
Folder.jpg in each folder. also put a copy of each Folder.jpg in there
in case anything happens to the original.

SBS used to have a place where you could specify the artwork filename
SBS should use. it might still have that, its been a long time since i
looked. its in the settings somewhere, and should be set if there.

while this may be a lot of work, in the long run it'll be worth it for
you.

u can keep other art in the folder, no problem. you just want to
specify to SBS the right filename to use for display, (its a global
setting).

its only one half of what he needs to do. he doesn't have all files
spilt up into separate album folders obviously b/c thats why he sees the
wedding singer for everything.

i don't embed images for a number of reasons, like the work involved,
wasted space, the hassle of making changes, and the tax on the SBS
scanner to get the art from every file.

its just easier to have a single standalone jpg in a folder to deal
with. but i understand why some folks like embedding art.

well, u said you see "wedding singer" for most of your music.

so, the simplest and most likely explanation is you have lots of files
sharing a folder and thats the art in it. is that not the case?

if SBS is showing one art for many differing things, one way or
another, there is a reason for it.

Yep the Wedding Singer appears for the majority of albums, but that
image only resides in the Wedding Singer album. That's my confusion.
All of my albums are in their own folders, songs that don't belong to
albums are in the top level My Music folder, but I'm not fussed about
them.

well first, are you on windows? do you have hidden files shown?

which files does the wedding singer show as the art for? the top level
files? or the separate album folders? or both?

could you have mistakenly embedded the wedding art in files? embedded
art takes precendence i think.

also make sure after you think you have things correct you do a full
clear and rescan. (not new/updated)

I'm on Windows, I do have hidden files shown yeah.
I've only used MP3Tag on 3 albums and embedded the image on them. These
3 albums work perfectly. So I don't think it's that.
I could however (if MP3Tag allows it) clear the album art tag off all
of the albums so it only looks at the jpgs..?

The wedding singer appears for the songs within the albums folders.
This is only on the SB and the softsqueeze.

If I look at the folders in Windows Explorer in thumbnail view, they
have their own (and correct) album art appearing.

well thats up to you. if they are working u don't need to "fix" them,

forget doing that, windows explorer works off thumbs.db and can be
inconsistent. doubleclick the actual art files in the folders and make
sure they are correct.

regarding your tags, do you have proper artist and album names

OK, now at home and am currently going through all my albums and
renaming and front covers to front.jpg.
Any that don't have images I've chucked into a folder for me to sort
out later.
It's definitely only SB that shows the Wedding Singer as the art, tried
the same song in Media Monkey, WMP11 and Itunes and album art is fine.

One thing though which could be a breakthrough, it only appears to be
my songs that are affected not the albums. I.E. Any songs that don't
appear to belong to albums and are loose in My Music have adopted the
Wedding Singer as it's album cover. Those that reside in album folders
appear to have the correct covers.
Does this change things at all?

If I've gone through the process of adding the Front.jpg to all of my
albums, is there a quick way prey tell that will allow me to embed these
into the files???

Thanks all

windows likes it to be Folder.jpg instead of something else to do the
windows explorer folder art, just fyi.

and as long as you have it in a folder per album, all will work as

i'm not sure if i'm not understanding you or you aren't understanding
me, but SBS assumes that ANY art it finds belongs to ALL the files in a
folder, regardless of anything else. (the only exception is if a given
file happens to have embedded art as well, then that would supercede)

Sorry I think it might be me, I hadn't appreciated that SB will look
for any art files in the folder, even if it's the top level My Music
folder. So all the thousands of songs in there that do not reside in an
album folder could then get whatever jpg is in there. Am I right?

Well... There is only one jpg file that resides in there (and it was
hidden) and it is... (drum roll)... Sly & The Family Stone - Hot Fun In
The Summertime
So the Wedding singer must be somewhere else, I even checked in the
Wedding Singer folder and there is no actual image in there, it looks
like it's embedded.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-13 Thread jamesg1979

Good morning.

OK, here are a few images which might assist (they might not of
course)

This is one of the offending tracks, you can see it does have an album
tag but only resides in the top level My Music folder.
[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/1930/image1jrl.png]

However, when I was searching for this track, I discovered that
actually the Wedding Singer art (which I must admit is starting to
appear in my dreams) is tagged in the search results...

[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/9004/image2i.png]

But when I play it in WMP11... No album art

[image: http://img44.imageshack.us/img44/1153/image3mr.png]

There is only 1 jpg file in that top level My Music folder which is a
Sly & The Family Stone album cover.

Do these help illustrate anything?

well, it sounds to me like thats it then.

first off, SBS doesn't use ANY art file, meaning any old one by any
name. it will use ANY art file IT FINDS. it'll only find certain ones
by certain names, or whats embedded.

so what was the filename of the sly file?

secondly, if it found the wedding singer art as an embed in the "group"
folder, and thats all it found for files in that folder, it might have
used it for the art for all the files in that folder. that would be
very similar behavior to a jpg file it finds in the folder, only its
embedded.

again, if you stop using a group folder, and move files into a
artist\album struture, i think you'll see better results, that at the
very least are easier to troubleshoot.

also, at some point you need to do a "cleanup" ie. clear the SBS cache
operation, and a full clear and rescan.

The sly file is called Sly & The Family Stone - Hot Fun In The
Summertime.jpg.
I'm guessing somewhere along the line the blasted wedding singer got
imbedded in the top level folder. I need to test with lots of different
songs tonight really to be sure.

I am getting more and more tempted to mirror your suggested folder
structure.
My concern though is I have thousands of loose songs, a lot of them by
one off artists. Is it necessary to have a folder for every artist even
though there might only be one song?

what you want to do is take that folder [or the "loose" files] out of
your main music folders, put it somewhere else for the moment. then
setup an empty folder to write to.

then, assuming the tags are otherwise good on these files, i THINK you
can use an app like mp3tag to take ALL those files, and create an
artist\album structure based on the tag data in that blank folder you
made, as well as create new file names.

then copy it all back to your main music folder.

u'll have to ask others how to do that in mp3tag, but i know apps out
there will do it. maybe bliss as well.

Thanks. Well the wedding singer is no more, I moved all those songs
that did not belong to any albums into a new folder.
When I did a full rescan, wedding singer has been replaced with De La
Soul's album :(
Again, no jpg in there, I'm guessing the de la soul song in there is
tagged with the album work, but it still doesn't fully explain why the
rest of them are...

Another thing, this is related to MP3Tag, I have fetched the artwork for
a lot of the existing albums. I stated to both tag the album and put the

When I check though, there is a file called folder in there with

When I change this to JPG the album art appears.

Why is this?

you really need to explain more. i can't use ESP to figure out what
exactly you've done.

as i said, if tons of files are all in a single group folder and it
finds an artwork, either in the folder or embedded, it will use that for
everything in the folder.

MrSinatra;485514 Wrote:
> appears where? change what?

That file appears within the album folder, if I change the
extension/type to jpg the album art appears. I guess this is how MP3Tag
embeds the album art maybe.

This is giving me such a headache. Thanks for your patience.

If we jump forward to today, and forget last night for now.
I decided to take your advice with the folder structure, and this has
completely sorted those loose songs out so no rogue album art.

Now it looks like:
C:\My Music\Daft Punk\Alive 2007
C:\My Music\Daft Punk\Discovery

etc.

I used MP3Tag which is great at doing this (after advice on google)
Tag - Filename then %artist%\%album%\%_filename% creates the folder
structure.

Where I've now got the biggest headache however is where it's a
compilation album. I'd not appreciated quite what it would do, whereas
before i'd have

c:\My Music\Live Lounge 3\Athlete - Wires.mp3
c:\My Music\Live Lounge 3\Amy Winehouse - Valerie.mp3

I now have

c:\My Music\Athlete\Live Lounge 3\Athlete - Wires.mp3
c:\My Music\Amy Winehouse\Live Lounge 3\Amy Winehouse - Valerie.mp3

So in effect an entire compilation album is now spread over 12 folders.
Is this making sense?

Whilst this is fine for playing as they're all tagged correctly, the
artwork which I painstakingly saved as folder.jpg in every album folder,
now has to be copied across all 12 album folders that reside in the
artist folder.

I'll be amazed if this is making sense. Guess the only thing to do is
to get copying/pasting.

mp3tag only does what its told. so what you have to do is account for
what it doesn't get right.

with comps, what you ultimately want is to put all the files of any one
CD in ONE folder. so do it something like this:

c:\My Music\Various Artists\Live Lounge 3\Athlete - Wires.mp3

where "Various Artists" now becomes the replacement folder name for
artist.

any one album/cd only needs one artwork in the one folder.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] 2 questions about album art

2009-11-16 Thread jamesg1979

Thanks Sinatra.

My weekend has been immensely frustrating and satisfying in equal
measures!
I have now sorted my folder structure out, have art work for the
majority of albums (still a work in progress) and no rogue artwork
appearing on random songs (like the Wedding Singer).

Whilst this was a tough and long job, it was well worth it and MP3Tag
absolutely made this task loads easier - anyone else reading this and
considering sorting your music out, think the whole process through
first otherwise you'll end up giving yourself a headache like I have!

The only strange thing is that when you look at the My Music folder in
thumbnail view when you're in My Documents, the wedding singer is still
the main image! I don't mind as now all my songs are in their respective
artist folders, but it's still strange and doesn't seem to be a way to
change it.
I can live with it though.

It doesn't matter, I'm honestly so happy that I've sorted the initial

Once you get the file structure and tags worked out things tend to go a

the thumbs.db is def there. the search won't find it IF you don't set
the option in search to look at hidden and system files.

look manually. you want to look for the thumbs.db file in first the
parent folder of the folder showing the wrong artwork. that should be
it. if that doesn't work, then look in the folder itself that shows the
wrong art.

that file is the reason and it will be very near wherever the wrong art
is displayed. (you should be able to see hidden system files like
desktop.ini Folder.jpg and thumbs.db)

I'm gonna go and disagree with you there, I did a full search inc
hidden files using the advanced options and it found 1 thumbs.db which
resided in My Documents/random folder name. I deleted it.

I then used the cmd prompt (after searching on Google) and used that to
completely delete any traces of thumbs.db anywhere on the c:/

I then closed Windows Explorer and reopened and it's still very much
there.

maybe its case sensitive.

but one way or the other, that is showing for a reason. maybe there is
an image file in that folder or embedded in a music file in that folder
still.

the answer exists. it isn't just showing you wedding singer for no
reason at all.

http://www.5starsupport.com/xp-tips/windows-explorer.htm

if you have no images in the "My Music" folder, or files in it with
images in them, then explorer must be working off of an old thumbs.db,
imo.

whats weird is if you have subfolders in that folder, it should
actually be showing you four images, which just further makes me think
its using an old cache file.

don't do a search. manually look in folder and parent folders for the
hidden files, and system files (aka operating system files). if you
don't see thumbs.db or desktop.ini or Folder.jpg anywhere, you don't
have file options configured correctly.

Sorry for not coming back to you.
It's not actually, I did look in the folder and there are no files just
the folders.
As I mentioned it really doesn't matter that much as it's not affecting
the rest of the album art.

Thanks though

it might be in the folder the my music folder itself is in...?

obviously, you don't have to keep trying, but it would drive me crazy.
i like to get to the bottom of things like that, b/c there def is a
reason and its the kind of thing we're likely to run into again.

but i also agree it really doesn't matter, esp if its not in SBS and
only in XP.
