Screen shot of working cassette style. It requires the just released 2.2
version and you will find the style file in the announcement thread if
you like to improve it.

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=518482#post518482

As you probably can guess from the screen shot, the 2.2 version also
supports custom fonts and bold fonts and rotating images.

Cool ideas but I think they will have to wait for a dedicated cassette
player applet. I'm not sure it's suitable to build something like this
with the generic approach used in the Custom Clock applet.

I was just thinking that a simple version with rotating wheels could
show of some of the possibilities with the current Custom Clock
approach.

do you plan also so have the wheels spin at different rates as the
"tape" moves from one to the other? How about the centre window showing
the diameter shifting from one to the other as a progress indicator?
Simplest might be to have it work as a track-by-track timed progress as
opposed to trying to have it work with varied playlists lengths.

V2, add a feature to switch the graphic to a retro radio with the
pulsing glow as animation when playing 'net radio.

right now I noticed that the forum doesn't put image name, so, the first

Do you think it would better if the wheels were empty inside?

Theoretically I think it can be a non square image but it will be
rotated around its center so a square image makes most sense in this
case I think.
The wheel on the image needs to be sized correctly so it fits the hole
on the cassette image, I don't plan to do any resizing of it.

The rotation will be in the center of the image, but you can place the
image anywhere on the screen, I fixed that in the 2.0 version. So for
example, you can now put a analog clock on the left side of the screen.

My plan was to show two rotating wheel images behind the cassette
image. The result should be that they will be visible through the
transparent holes in the cassette image. I planned to handle this with a
new item type that only rotates the images when the player is playing
something.

The logic should be that "background" is used if you have specified it,
else it will use "backgroundtype".

There is now a 2.1.2 version of the Custom Clock applet which should
have a working wirelessicon, batteryicon and alarmtimetext items.

Here is also an updated version of your style with an improvment, the
background is specified as "clockimage" instead of "background". This
will make the image appear in front of the cover which makes it look a
bit nicer.

Really nice work by the way.

That's strange... mine is displaying the cover "under" the transparent
box in the background image. I modified the screensaver more last
night, and also "shrunk" the coverart box a bit (moved the bottom up,
moved the right edge to the left a bit", as well as darkened the bottom
area to make the date area look better). I also used some of erland's
new features - reformatted the "now playing" info and added
play/stop/pause icons. I'll try to figure out how to capture the screen
(may install Squeezeplay 7.5) or take a picture as you suggest.

You said that the rotation is always screen centered, right? So the

ok, got it.
now, unfortunately I've got no battery to test, but I would expect that

For bot wifi icon and battery the screen saver doesn't start at all.

For the alarm text, I tryed the hour minute combination you wrote but
it doesn't display anything.

Please find attached the schema I'm working on.

Also I found that backgroundtype is irrelevant. Regardless If you

If someone is up to the challenge it would be really cool to get two
images:
1. A cassette image without the "wheels" in the holes
2. A "wheel" image that just contains the part of the wheel that should
be shown and the rest of the image transparent.

If we had this, I think it would be possible with some small
enhancements to the plugin to create a style similar to the link below
but with rotating wheels when the music is playing, and of course with
the current artist/album/track shown on the label on the cassette:

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-18 Thread tcutting

I spent some time last night with the new plugin. Was able to make use
of the new "track"...text items. Nice.
Was also able to get the alarmicon to display, as well as play, pause
and stop icons.
I could NOT get the alarmtime to work, tried with a valid time format
string (same as my clock string).
Being able to "bold" text would be nice.
One other suggestion - there are cases where text items are longer than
the available size - could a "scroll" feature be added in cases where a
text item is longer than the available width?
I didn't have time to post the latest screen I came up with - maybe
tonight.
My last "problem" is I like the screen I created better than the
standard "Now Playing" screen, and wish there was a way to use a "Custom
Clock" screen in place of "Now Playing".

Or isn't the screen saver working at all when you have a battery icon

And in the "text" field enter one of the values:

I suspect this might be caused by the bug I fixed in the 2.1.1 release
of the applet, I released that about an hour ago. Is the problem caused
by a customized style which contains one of the switching* item types ?

the strange thing at the moment is that I cant start any custom screen

Strange, are you using separate folder.jpg (or cover.jpg) or have you
written the album art to the tags ?
Which Squeezebox Server version are you using ?

Select the style in Custom Clock Helper settings page, check the
"Restore to online version or delete if only available locally" check
box and save, this will remove the style unless its a build in style. If
it's a builtin style it will restore it to the default settings.

Your style shows artwork perfectly in my setup, is there something
specific with your album art ? Is it album art for internet radio ?

If you want the background to be shown in front of the cover art, you
should setup a "clockimage" item and put the background url on that one
instead of the "background" parameter. This will also make it possible
to have black background with album art shown on top and the background
image on top of the album art with a transparent hole where the album
art is displayed.

The 2.1 version contained a bug related to switchingtext items, this is
fixed in the 2.1.1 version I just released.

The transparent feature with the cover behind works in the file I
uploaded... you need to make sure there's not a background color set.

It needs to be an url, but you should be able to enter a url that
points to SBS instead of a internet site. The advantage of using
Internet at the moment is that it will make the style usable for
everyone else if you export it.

However, I'll look into this later, because I can agree that in a
production system the images should really be retrieved from the local
SBS instead of a internet site on the other side of the world.

Ideally I'd like the images to be stored locally on the Radio, at least
all static images like play/repeat/shuffle icons which will never
change.

Rikk-
Hope you don't mind, but I played with your clock screensaver a bit. I
used one of the backgrounds you posted and the export from Custom Clock
Helper and got something close to what I like. I prefer 12-hour clock
with AM/PM, and used to background with the "hole" off to the left so I
could make the clock bigger. Took a bit of playing to figure out how to
get the cover image to show behind the background image, but realized I
needed to not select a background color.
I don't have the tools to adjust your background graphic, but I'd like
to see the upper box where the now-playing information is shown made a
bit smaller, so the middle elements could be moved up a bit, making the
bottom block for the Date a little larger. Other than that, I think
it's pretty nice.
I don't know how to capture a screen shot from the Radio, but I'm
posting my exported file in case you'd like to try it!

Tom

That's strange, it works perfectly here. Unless you've set the "order"
parameter it's placed behind the "clockimage" but in front of the
"background". So if you have configured a "clockimage" and it isn't
transparent png, it could be that the cover is placed behind it. I think
you will need to have a png image, jpg files won't be transparent.

You can try to hit the "Export" button for the style and post it here
and I'll take a look at it.

Ah, most important: never saw the album art.

About icons I have one question: to develop faster I put always the
same icon for all states (for example in wi fi strenght). May this cause
the screen saver not to work?

When I say that the configuration doesn't work I meaan that the radio
stops starting screen saver, or that the screen saver cannot be loaded.

Anyway, apart these little flaws, you did a great job. In this way
screen savers are highly configurable. Really cool!

Could you post the backgrounds from post #35 so I have something to
experiment with ?
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=514273#post514273

Also, if possible it would be great if you post them as a png file with
a transparent hole where the cover art is supposed to be. The reason is
that I think it will look better if the cover art is a little bit larger
than the hole and the background is placed in front of the cover art, so
the cover is only visible where the background is transparent.

I have a working version of Custom Clock that handles the simple style
you posted last, but unless you like to experiment with it already now I
think I'll try to implement a few of the other features before releasing
it.

It seems like the album cover and now playing options doesn't work very
good on the radio, so I'll need to do some adjustments to the applet
before I'm able to support your style.

If you have more ideas, please post them because it shows me which kind

Yes, I think so.

If you post the background image without the text items and without the
cover art, I can make a try to setup the positioning of everything.

You have to choose between "Background image" or "cover".
The clock face image is placed on top of the album cover.

I don't think the texts can be transparent but all the images uses the
standard alpha channel transparency. I'm not sure how many transparency
level there is in a png file but I'm guessing 100, 255 or something
similar.

All the images are just plotted on the screen as they are, all in the
center of the screen. If they are transparent it means that you will see
the image plotted underneath.

For each text item, I can specify:
- The margin from the left/right side
- The vertical position as number of pixels from top
- The height of the item
- The font size of the text
- The foreground color of the item (texts can't be transparent)
- The horizontal alignment of the item within the "item box", left,
right, center

It's not currently possible to position the item to the right or left
with pixels, but you can increase the margin and use the alignment to
put it where you want it.

The item background is always transparent, so you need to use a
background image with "item boxes" if you like a specific background.

I should probably add a horizontal position parameter to make it easier
to position them.

>
> No way to resize it in any way different from full screen height?

Well actually, I just saw that I'd added a "coversize" parameter so you
can have it any size you want.

It's really not a problem to add more features but I haven't done it
yet because there haven't been much interest in designing custom clock
styles. So if you have something in mind, post a drawing and I'll see
what I can do.

Look at the images at the following page:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_applet

The color, size and position of the text items can pretty much be
changed as you like.

If we start with the green analog clock image:
- Text item 1:
- Text item 2: %A
- Text item 3: %d %B
- Now playing text item:
- Background image:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.3/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/Clock/clock_analog_bkgrd.png
- Clock face image:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.3/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/Clock/ClockFace.png
- Hour hand image:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.3/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/Clock/HourHand.png
- Minute hand image:
http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.3/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/Clock/MinuteHand.png
- Second hand image:

If you look at the digital clock image which says 00:01:
- Text item 1: %H:%M
- Text item 2: %A
- Text item 3: %d %B
- Now playing text item: Configured to show album
- Background image: black
- Clock face image:
http://erlandplugins.googlecode.com/svn/CustomClock/trunk/images/clock_classic_bkgrd_touch.png
- Hour hand image:
- Minute hand image:
- Second hand image:

The background have the following possibilities today:
- No background
- Show centered album cover covering the height of the screen

The text item can use the formatting keywords listed here:
http://www.lua.org/pil/22.1.html

The now playing can show album, artist or track name if I remember
correctly.

I just get the artwork icon from the server, so I don't think I've any
control of if it's a real icon or the default radio antenna image.

If you are talking about the space on the side of the artwork icon, I
think there are two options, one that show the cover with black
background on the side and one that shows it with transparent background
on the side.

Ok, so I suggest a different approach: if you could email me a schema
wich explains actual locations and size of each text items and images
I'll see what I can design with these.

One more thing: this morning I tryed to configure custom clock to
display album cover while playing. I saw that if the radio (like
smoothjazz.com) hasn't an actual cover, custom clock shows the standard
black box with the radio antenna, if the radio (choose one artist on

this a bug or am I configuring it the wrong way?

The current Custom Clock can display:
- 3 text items with clock/date formats
- 1 text item with now playing information
- 1 background image or centered album cover
- 1 background clock face image (placed on top of the background
image)
- 3 rotating images used for analog clock mode to display hour, minute,
second hand/pointer

So it's not really suitable for a now playing screen. Your designs are
still great but they are too advanced for the Custom Clock applet at the
moment.

There is no support for this today but it's definitely a possibility I
like to see in a Now Playing screen.

Don't worry, this will be possible thanks to Logitech recent licensing
change. I have a solution for it even if Logitech don't prioritize
making an official API. It just relies on a 7.5 Squeezebox Server, so
Logitech have to finish up the Squeezebox Touch release first.

Still, anyone that wants this to work as a long time solution should go

Really interesting layout on all of them.

Have you or anyone anyone else tried how they look like on the device ?

Should be possible through the Flickr app in My Apps menu.

The only problem now is that this means that someone just HAVE to make

I think Rikk's design is meant to be a "Now Playing" screen. It's an
elegant solution which eliminates needing to make a choice between
seeing the large time and seeing the album art.

Couldn't agree with you more about eliminating the popup menu during
the alarm. The alarm function could be described in the manual, just
like the volume/mute button is. Once you know how to snooze or turn off
the alarm you don't really need a daily popup to remind you what to do.

Fantastic ideas, so much more helpful than the popup menu. I would have
thought that the ability to see the time was a no brainer - for most
people at least.

However, unless you're hoping for Logitech to implement this as the
default alarm display, I assume it will need someone like Erland to
build a custom app. And I believe that can only happen when the API can
support 3rd party alarm apps. It was discussed in other threads, but I
didn't think this had been done. But I could be wrong. Would love to see

This is nice, very nice!

Beeing a perfectionist, I would lower the grey gradient on the right

But still, good job. Miles away from the original design..

It isn't supported in the current version, but please provide two icons
and I'll try to add support for it in next version of Custom Clock.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-04 Thread tcutting

I believe the current alarm behavior is as follows (based on nightly
7.4.2 with latest pushed firmware):
Turn Off Alarm: Power button
Snooze: Push BIG Knob or Push VOLUME Knob (normally "mute")
Acknowledge alarm, but continue playing: BACK button

Of course there's currently a popup which I'd like to disable for my
use (with small instructions on how to choose these options with the BIG
knob).

I primarily user Erland's custom clock screensaver on my Radio, so
having it show the alarm state AND be the screen used during an alarm
would be the configuration I would use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-04 Thread ziza

Love Rikk's clean design. Agree with Loom that the pop-up menu hampers
clock visibility. Not only obscures the clock but darkens the clock face
so overall brightness is lost.

Why does the alarm need to trigger instructions for snoozing or turning
off? Alarm clocks don't usually display turn-off instructions. Couldn't
the alarm function be explained elsewhere, like in the manual.

Then the time could be displayed large and bright. I like seeing the
large bell icon when the alarm is triggered. It shouldn't go away until
the alarm is snoozed and/or turned off.

See this page for more information about the image sizes needed:

Don't be afraid to also provide alarm indication icons or alternative
artwork when the alarm is active, it's on my todo list to implement
support for this in the Custom Clock applet.

I'll of course give you credit so users can see that a style is

While I like the idea with the pop-up menu, the clock isn't visible
anymore.

So, either no pop-up, or clock integration in the pop-up.

As much fun as creating thoses mock-up is, I hope some developers would
pick up these ideas. Some people around here actually seem to like it

Gotta say I'm with you on the intent behind all your points, although
some of the specifics might not be as easy as they sound (eg increasing
brightness as volume ramps up)

But I particularly agree with [5]. The alarm snooze interface is my
major bugbear with the radio. It just seems so ill-thought-out and in
need of a bit more common sense. Currently feels like an afterthought.
Certainly not designed by one of life's snoozers.

I guess the radio is already supposed to be aware of the "next" alarm
(in case of connectivity loss) so don't see why point [6] couldn't be
done - perhaps as part of the custom clock applet. I doubt everyone
would need/want it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

Good suggestion, I might try Erlands clock

Does ist only work with the Server? Or can it run locally?

In my opion, too less thought went into studying the scenarious of user
behaviour. In what situation one would need certain things.

For me, this one would be perfect:

1. Minimum brightness user controlable, as its now in 7.50

2. Regardless of minimum brightness, increase it an additional 30% when
operating the Radio. Until 100% is reached of course. Stay at this
brightness level for 30 seconds, then back to minimum brightness or
whatever the sensor suggests.

3. When using the sleep timer, a user configurable fade out would be
great.

4. When the alarm triggers, I want the brightness of the clock
increasing in sync with the volume, until brightness reaches 100%. When
you wake up, things should be simple and clear. I need to check the time
as fast and easy as I can.

5. Turning of the alarm / Snooze: For me, the perfect scenario would
be: Pressing the knob or turning it would both send the Radio to snooze.
I don't want to fiddle with the knob, looking at the display if I just
triggered the snooze, or accidently turned it of. I'm not that conscious
in the morning ;) To really turn of the alarm, one should press and
hold the knob for 3 seconds. At the moment, you would get the playlist
functions by pressing and holding the knob. I don't need that when
waking up. Only choice for me is: Sleep again, or turn off the Radio. I
don't need anythign fancy at 6:00 am.

6. Ah yes, the clock screensaver should also display the next alarm
time in smaller letters under the actual time. So I don't have to always
look again what time I set.

Well, I understand that its only my opinion how the unit should
operate. But maybe I'm not alone.

Michael

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-03 Thread ModelCitizen

I think you might be experiencing the same thing I did. I got around the
issue by using the third party Custom Clock applet (thanks Erland). I
took the standard digital clock with black background that comes with
Erland's applet and then set the letters/numbers to be dark grey. This
had the effect of making the clock screensaver quite a lot darker. This
could work for you as you will then be able to turn the overall minimum
brightness up so the navigate screens are bright enough but the clock
screensaver not too bright.

Erland digital clock is much better laid out than the Logitech offering
too.

I am glad I am not alone with this problem. Up till now I thought I
was.

It would also be great if the time brightened when the alarm goes off
before sunrise.

On 7.4 the alarm snooze pop up choices are bright. Unfortunately the
pop up screen background is dark. The overall effect is not one of
brightness.

Will the redesigned snooze screen comes with a larger time, brighter
time display?

Thanks for the explanation!

However, I like it dark at night. I turned he minimum brightness down
so the clock is just barely visible. Unfortunately, when navigating the
menus in the dark, it's almost impossible to read them.

And when I turn the brightness up to read the menus, the clock is too
bright for me to sleep.

So, an elegant option for 7.5.0 would be to turn the brightness up for
an additional 30% when operating the unit. And if not, falling back for
the minimum brightness after a certain amout of time.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Dimming Dilemma

2010-02-02 Thread fcm4711

Hi Loom

It's the other way round - although the effect is the same. Brightness
is reduced after a bit of inactivity to increase the lifetime of the
backlight. However this is only necessary at the upper end of the
brightness scale.

7.4.x did it over the complete brightness range although it wasn't
necessary in the lower end. In fact it was kind of annoying that you
could define a minimum brightness which then would go darker after a
moment of inactivity.

Therefore 7.5.x changes the behavior to only dim in the upper half of
the brightness scale, but not below.

Felix
