Re: [rails-oceania] Re: Ruby Australia AGM - Canberra - Sunday the 13th of December 2015
I'd like to publicly acknowledge that the new committee will be our first Ruby Australia committee with a majority of women. As a community, we still have so much more to do in terms of diversity, but I think it's important to recognise these milestones and take a moment to realise how much we have learned. Thank you to everyone in Australia's Ruby community for continuing to find ways to welcome and support each other. Re: [rails-oceania] Interesting Lead Dev / Co Founder Role
Not that I want to discourage people posting jobs on this list, but Theresa has posted this role at least twice herself, Mikel. Perhaps you'd be better advising her to attempt a different approach? Because this one does not seem to be working. On Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 4:23 PM, Mikel Lindsaar raasd...@gmail.com wrote: Hi there peeps, Working at reInteractive, I get a lot of interesting ideas across my desk. Some of them are better than others. One I am interested in at the moment and helping mentor is Theresa Lim, founder of Play2Lead. She makes software that increases the engagement and feedback from conference / large meeting attendees. The cool thing about Theresa is that she has already got a working web app, coded and built (in Rails) and has Australia's largest event software registration company signed up exclusively giving her access to 20M event attendees in Australia and 500+ events in Australia, China and Middle East (including Microsoft Tech Ed). So she has the determination, drive and sales ability to make this happen. What she is looking for is a Lead Developer and Co Founder to work with her to get this to the next level, and to re-engage potential investors in next 3-6 months to raise $200K-$700K (she is already engaged with 3 seed funds/angel networks who have been courting her) You'll be taking over the existing Rails application, leading and directing the development effort. You'll work with Theresa and will get advice from me as well as needed. Pay:Negotiable. The company has money, talk to Theresa on what you can and can't do. Location: Sydney, this isn't negotiable for this opportunity Start: Now. Even if you can do weekends or evenings for a few weeks before you both agree the you/the role is a fit and you are ready to go full-time. Re: [rails-oceania] What's in a Name?
This is great news, Mikel! One thing to consider as they're no longer under the reInteractive brand is whether Ruby Australia should take them under its umbrella to provide official cover in terms of insurance, handling of sponsorship etc. Something to discuss with the current committee? On Mon, Aug 5, 2013 at 8:07 PM, Pat Allan p...@freelancing-gods.com wrote: Hi Mikel Thanks for all the hard work reInteractive's been putting into these events, and I particularly appreciate this next step of giving them a more community-driven approach and name (not that you weren't community-focused in the past!). And I'm sure you're aware (though most on this list won't be): we're looking forward to bringing the InstallFest event down to Melbourne in the next few months as well - a date's been figured out at the moment. Cheers -- Pat On 05/08/2013, at 4:22 PM, Mikel Lindsaar wrote: Hi there ruby friends :) So, some of you might have heard of two community initiatives we have started over the past few months. The InstallFest and the Development Hub. Both of these were kicked off by reInteractive's community manager Chloe. When we started, we branded these, by putting reinteractive in front of them. We did this for a couple of reasons, (1) by putting our company name on the line and backing this event, it got a lot more attention than it might of otherwise and (2) it's always good to have a bit of marketing :) However, both of these events are growing in popularity and attendance. installFest has now almost passed 100 people setup with Ruby on Rails and Development Hub last week had about 40 people rock up including mentors As our intention the whole time has been to make these community events and have anyone attend and help, we've decided to remove any reInteractive branding from the name of these initiatives. Of course we will still sponsor these events and Chloé will still work hard at making them happen and will be the point person on driving them to continue to expand and grow, but we hope this change will make it more acceptable for anyone from any company (development shop, freelancer or otherwise) to come along, participate, attend or help out. Also, it means we can start expanding this thing, news will be out soon about us starting the InstallFest in other capital cities in Australia and move out from there. To reflect this change we've gone and updated our website and every site we have control over to refer to these events as the Ruby on Rails Installfest and Ruby on Rails Development Hub instead of reInteractive Installfest and reInteractive Development Hub. If you find an old reference to reInteractive directly in the branding, please let us know and we'll get it fixed ASAP :) Also, this means these events will always stay free and run at a cost plus basis to the sponsors. I'm also happy to talk with anyone wanting to run an Installfest in their location, we can provide guidance, materials etc and if you have a bunch of people, we'll even fly our team there to help run it. So from 8.30am on Friday 13th July (tomorrow!) we're holding a Jelly at TheWorkben.ch! Bring your laptop, iPad, sketchbook or whatever you need to be creative, and join us for the day to jam on whatever takes your fancy. [rails-oceania] Meetup with Corey Haines - Sydney December 1st
Corey gets into Sydney this Thursday and he's keen to meet up with folks from the local community that night. I suggested a pub near the CodeRetreat venue, which is at Thoughtworks. Re: [rails-oceania] Re: An ultimatum on job postings.
My oar: I agree that all we can police are the regular members of the community and that we should do so. I advocate that we agree (place in the group 'rules', if that's what we do) not to reply on-list to job postings. Not even for clarification. Email the sender directly with your question and if *they* think the answer needs wider promulgation, they can re-publish or amend. That's it. I think it's pretty straightforward. It leaves us with only one email to delete, or read, or whatever and reduces noise on the list. It also makes us a nicer more welcoming community and I would greatly appreciate that. Re: [rails-oceania] javascript framework for rails
I think it's a good question. Certainly that's the technically easiest solution here. Javascript is a pretty cool language. It has lots of ruby like features. One major hangup for me is actually just the syntax. Bloody commas, semi-colons and curly brackets everywhere. Normally I'm not the sort of person who gets hung up on this sort of thing, but I spend a substantial amount of time going back and putting commas in and so forth, and it really is costing me in terms of efficiency. Also, it doesn't help that in some cases, some browsers let you get away with missing bits of syntax, but other don't. I can understand that to some degree, but it's hard to be sympathetic to the idea that maybe we don't just need to learn JS properly. That's what JSlint is for, though. A relatively short period of using the TextMate bundle meant I never forgot what went where again (cause it has nice little notifications for warnings or errors on save). I'm sure there are similar plugins etc for other editors and IDEs. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby or Rails Oceania group. [rails-oceania] Cameron Adams talks about Google Wave in Sydney
Off-topic, but I know Wave is of interest to a lot of people on the list, so I'll take the hit. Apologies to those who don't care. Cameron Adams (http://themaninblue.com/), one of the original Wave team, will be one of two presenters at the Usability Professionals Association meeting next week. I don't think it'll be very technical, but I'm interested in the design process and problem-solving involved. RSVPs required. $10. [rails-oceania] Re: CSS frameworks
In other words, if you're a Ruby developer it'll make perfect sense to you. If you're a CSS person you'll be shocked and sickened. That's just the way it is. If you're Lachlan Hardy you'll probably be torn by the whole thing. That's pretty much it. Sass makes me feel pain. The abstraction is quite nice, but I think the cost in terms of outputted CSS is too high. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby or Rails Oceania group. [rails-oceania] Re: CSS frameworks
What cost is it that you're talking about mainly? I thought the output of it was pretty good.. Mainly the size, as per Lachie's comments. Being the front-end pedant I am, I also have some issues with the formatting of the output. The specificity is also something that shits me generally. The more specific your CSS, the more the browser has to work to get your page rendered correctly. Sass's indentation based inheritance model tends to make it easier to end up with overly specific CSS. That's something you could work around, I'm sure, but my tendency would be to keep indenting and end with unnecessarily long descendant selectors. I, too, am now intrigued by Less. I might try it on a project and see what I think. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby or Rails Oceania group. [rails-oceania] Re: Thoughts on HAML?
My experience with HAML has left me ambi-markup. I have no preference as, explained by many, they both have their pros and cons. I find HTML to be easier to work with if you're going to put conditional attributes on your tags (go on, give me a HAML example that can do that) but HAML is so darn pretty and apparently *faster* than ERB. No, no, it's not. http://nex-3.com/posts/81-more-haml-benchmark-issues As for the conditionals, they're one of my favourite aspects about Haml. Mike's examples are good. The best thing about them is that if the conditional evaluates in the negative, you don't end up with an empty class attribute - you don't get one at all. You can also bust out some more complex shizzle: %body{:class = (@layout ? @layout : (@category == * ? tags : @category))} (Not that I'd ever use that in production... Oh, wait...) I love Haml. It's delicious. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby or Rails Oceania group. Wow. That's insane Lachlan! Can it be configured to work with other sites? If you look at the examples of 'data' queries towards the bottom of the list on the right, you'll see that it can parse HTML, RSS, ATOM, JSON, XML, Microformats and more directly from a URL. [rails-oceania] Re: rorosyd meetup reminder (_Tuesday_ May 5, 2009)
Nice one. I'm trying to get in contact with some of the other speakers too. Also Tuesday meetup, whoo! Given we now have something in the order of 4 lightning talks, a presentation from an interstate guest, and probable attendance from Avi Bryant (and other JAOO speakers?), it would be awesome to rustle up the funding for our own bar. We need to guarantee a $1000 spend (incl food) to the Trinity for them to open the bar upstairs for us. This will save you trooping downstairs every time you want another drink (thus missing valuable Ruby goodness) and spilling your round all the way back up the stairs (thus annoying your mates). This is more usually the kind of thing that's discussed on the organisers list (which anyone interested is welcome to join) but given the time constraints I just want to get it out there. Can we get $1000 from a source, or sources, in the next few hours so we can have a bar? Anybody got the hookup for sponsorship? Any agencies or companies willing to pitch in $100 each? We need to know immediately if we're to convince the Trinity to put on another staff member for the night. [rails-oceania] Automatically grokking templates based on files in Sinatra
It might just be my unbelievable hangover, because I thought this would be easy, but I'm struggling big time. Basically, I want to be able to pass routes such as '/dialogs', 'dialogs/wizard', '/controls/buttons' etc to one controller that tells Sinatra to go find the appropriate haml file. [rails-oceania] Re: [railscamp] Railscamp 4: What worked well; how can we improve?
* better gitjour I'm working on it. Should have some goodies up on github as soon as catching up on work and life allows me to surface. Keep on eye of http://github.com/lachlanhardy/gitjour for the funk. (and, preferably, fix my nooby Ruby) * 70 people too many I completely disagree. 70 people is only too many if you don't know them all. The first couple of camps we had a pattern that broke the ice, formed new groups and gave us all awesome inspiration to hack. We didn't have that this time. For future camps, I recommend we structure things a little more to shape the weekend. Sunday afternoon/evening/late night began to feel a lot more like Railscamp than the massive LAN party we'd been having until then. I say we go back to the stupid introductory ice-breaking activities that everybody thinks are kinda lame. They are. We know. But they *work*. You get to meet other cool people and learn what they're into. It's heaps more fun hacking with folks you don't meet with regularly cause it broadens just about everything you can learn from them / with them So bring back crazy ruby-oriented pizza making. Or Half-baked. Or some ruby and/or web quiz. Anything as long as everybody has to participate in mixed random teams that they don't get to pick. This can be introduced via the welcome to Railscamp and intro to the rules and facilities (which is also a nice way to make sure generous folks like Nigel don't spend an hour cleaning up after everyone on the first morning). So that should deal with breaking the ice, meeting new peeps and forming new groups. Then we need some inspiration: First thing. Blog the fuck out of railscamp. Talk about what you like about it, what you want to do there. What you want to build. Point folks to your code for existing projects or map out plans for new ones. We should set up some aggregration based on #railscamp to get your ideas to everybody (and your post-camp love after you get home!) Butchers paper/ whiteboards should be made available from the start of the camp for organising sessions for Saturday and Sunday (this can also get pimped in the welcome). But what I'd really love to see is lightning talks on the Friday night. Show off shizzle you've already done. Show off some half-finished project that you'd love to crack on with over the weekend. Show off a new framework or app. Anything really. The idea would be for as many folks as possible to roll through. 5 mins max - even down to 2-3 minutes. The more folks step up and show something, the more we know about each other and the more likely we are to find somebody/something cool that we want to hack with/on. We had this at the first railscamp with Tim's preso on Twatter. Everybody spent the rest of the weekend writing Camping apps. We had it at the second camp with Duke, and Tim's preso-cum-workshop on Git, and Dan asking people why they hadn't used Merb yet then helping them install 0.4(!). The third camp had the *jours and Duke (again!). And Twetter. And... The list goes on. If my agenda for Railscamp could be summarised easily, it would be this: 1. Meet awesome new friends. 2. Start grand crazy projects with them. 3. Demo sexy-delicious-awesomeness. 4. Profit! Just some stuff I've been thinking about since I turned to Tim at about 9pm on Sunday night after the presentations had been flowing thick and fast for nearly 7 hours and said: Now, *this* is railscamp! I'd like to add my congratulations to Radar and Richo, though. Fucking awesome camp, gentlemen. Big ups to all who helped out. And much love for everybody I met. I had a completely sensational time and learned a lot from all of you. Hopefully next time I can meet the rest of you (I think I missed at least 10 peeps), plus some new folks, and we can build something amazing! [rails-oceania] Re: Syd: Reminder: Next Meetup, Wednesday October 8!
On this line, would people be interested in a talk on using Flex and Rails together? Yep! We've been doing it for a year and a half and have a variety of experiences, some more interesting than others... All in all it's a pretty neat way to develop fast and pretty apps. The only downside being the nagging feeling of evilness involved with using the Flash runtime. Well, it's definitely evil... :p Could show some of the different gateway mechanisms we've tried (e.g. JSON, to_xml, hand-crufted XML (and yes it's crufy how we do it), RubyAMF, WebORB for Rails). Perhaps the peeps would be interested to see some of the MVC frameworks available for Flex that we've tried to use to make Flex as fun as Rails? At the moment we're going with a pretty neat event-based one called Mate. A lot neater and more flexible than the traditional frameworks such as Cairngorm and PureMVC. Mate allows dependency injection a little like you do from the controller to the view in Rails, but has the advantage of using the Flex data binding mechanism, which means changes can be propagated immediately to views. (This is getting away from the Rails side though.) Do it! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Ruby on Rails Oceania group.
