Re: [RBASE-L] - Getting out of an infinite loop

2023-08-16 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Philippe,

Also, be sure to have ESCAPE set to ON.

Syntax: SET ESCAPE ON/OFF

SET ESCAPE allows you to use [Ctrl]+[Break] to escape or abort command
file processing or database file access.

Specify ON to enable users to abort processing in the middle of command
files, WHILE loops, and database access.

Specify OFF to prevent users from prematurely aborting a command file or
an application such as when R:BASE runs processes that create new tables
(such as the relational commands) from within a command.

If you cannot connect the database single-user as Razzak suggests,
trying ending the RBase session and then restarting your computer or
just logging off.  Often the computer shutdown sequence will clear the
files that you have "open" even tho they really aren't

Re: [RBASE-L] - Getting out of an infinite loop

2023-08-13 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Philippe,

There is no easy way to terminate an infinite WHILE .. ENDWHILE loop or
a process that takes too much time. Ending the task using the Task
Manager is the only way to end the session.

About resetting the number of users, without having the RBAdmin Tools,
here is one approach.

1. Start RBGX5E
2. At the R> Prompt:
 * SET MULTI OFF
 * CONNECT dbname
 * LIST
 * Notice the ...
o Number of users connected: 1.
 * DISCONNECT
 * EXIT

I hope it helps!

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Redraw an Enhanced DB Grid Control

Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.20615 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Enhanced DB Grid, PROPERTY, Redraw

Did you know that you can redraw an Enhanced DB Grid after performing an
update to the data records?

The new "REDRAWGRID" PROPERTY command parameter was introduced to redraw
an Enhanced DB Grid control.

  PROPERTY EnhancedDBGrid1 REDRAWGRID ' '

The redraw would be performed after an update is made, without having to

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Specify the Root Node Path with JSON Imports

2023-06-19 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Monday, June 19, 2023

Tip of the Day: Specify the Root Node Path with JSON Imports
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.20615 or higher
Sections..: File Gateway
Keywords..: Import, JSON, Root Node, NODE_PATH

Did you know that it is now possible to set the node path to the root
for JSON imports?

When importing JSON format data, the NODE_PATH parameter may be used to
set the node path to the root with a backslash character.

The change is applicable to JSON files where only the data row items are
in the file.

  GATEWAY IMPORT JSON CustResponse.json +
  REPLACE CustResponse +
  OPTION NODE_PATH \

In the above command, the NODE_PATH parameter is set to a backslash,
meaning the root.

If an unexpected format is detected, a "JSON To Data Packet" utility
will be displayed. The valid node must be selected which contains the
collection of rows. However, R:BASE will not prompt the user if the
NODE_PATH parameter is used.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: WHERE Clause Support for the SATTACH Command

2023-06-15 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, June 15, 2023

Tip of the Day: WHERE Clause Support for the SATTACH Command
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.20615 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: SATTACH, ODBC, WHERE Clause, Server, Table

Did you know that the SATTACH command was enhanced to allow a WHERE
clause to be specified with the syntax?

You can now limit the rows of table data being attached from a SQL data
source to a R:BASE database.

The following example attaches a SQL data source table, using an alias
name for the table, and specifies a WHERE clause for limited results:

SATTACH Artists AS tArtists WHERE ALastName = 'Ford'

It is also helpful to know how R:BASE and the foreign data source handle
the data when a WHERE is specified with a SQL data source table.

When using the SATTACH command, the WHERE clause is sent to the
SATTACHed database.

If an additional WHERE is used on that table, the processing of that
additional WHERE is done in the R:BASE engine after the SATTACHed table
has returned rows that only meet the original WHERE clause. The
SATTACHed table does the original WHERE, and the R:BASE engine does the
additional one.

Below, the SATTACH with "NY" in the WHERE clause is processed by the
SATTACHed table. The SELECT with "Comp%" in the WHERE clause is
processed by the R:BASE engine.

SATTACH TEMPORARY Customer AS QBCustomer USING ONLY ListID, Name +
ALIAS QBCustomerListID, QBCustomerName WHERE Name LIKE '% - NY'

SELECT * FROM QBCustomer WHERE QBCustomerName LIKE 'Comp%'

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Added Hot Key Support for Enhanced DB Grid Searches

2023-03-09 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Friday, March 10, 2023

Tip of the Day: Added Hot Key Support for Enhanced DB Grid Searches
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.20309 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Enhanced DB Grid, Hot Key, Find, Find Previous, Find Next

Did you know that "Find Previous" hot key support has been implemented
for Enhanced DB Grid searches?

Using the [Shift+F3] key combination, the "Find Previous" search will be
performed.

The Enhanced DB Grid supports record search capabilities that can be
launched while running the form.

To search for text within Enhanced DB Grids, the [Ctrl+F] key
combination displays the "Record Search" dialog.

When matches are found, the [F3] key will perform the "Find Next"
search. Then, the [Shift+F3] key combination will perform the "Find
Previous" search.

A progress dialog will be displayed during the search process, so the
user is informed that the search is working!

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Traversing Sub-Directories in the File List Box Control

2023-03-09 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, March 09, 2023

Tip of the Day: Traversing Sub-Directories in the File List Box Control
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.20309 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: File List Box, Sub-Directory, Files, Directory

Did you know that sub-directory support was added to the File List Box
control?

It is now possible to view and traverse sub-directories when listing
files in the File List Box. The control was also updated to provide a
'..' entry within the list box, to move one directory up.

To specify that directories are listed within the control, select the
File List Box on the form, then within the Object Inspector, alter the
FileType.ftDirectory option to True.

Re: [RBASE-L] - Displaying SWF pictures

2023-02-09 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Javier,

Though IE is no longer supported and appears to be removed from the
system, it is still there. The issue is whether the ActiveX control that
is supposed to read the SWF file is installed. In RBASE, an IE session
may be started in the browser control. The browser control has an option
on whether to use IE or Edge as the engine.

Another approach is to import the SWF ActiveX control to RBASE as a
control (if present in the system). Then load the SWF using that
imported ActiveX control.

If the SWF reader is not present, then you can't do much about it. Adobe
Flash is long gone.

Regarding a way to globally remove the design password from all forms,
you may contact the support and services team at R:BASE Technologies for
such special service.

Hope it helps!

Very Best R:egards,

Razzak

by an external application that is run from line command. In the pasts
I just placed a web browser in the form, and it displayed the SWF
picture without any problem; I believe it used the MS Explorer.

Apparently, the new browser, Edge, no longer supports SWF files, nor
do any of the other browsers as the format has been discontinued. I
tried several format converters, but none seems to work with this
flavor of SWF.

Is there anyway to display a SWF file in and R:Base form? I might be
able to get the picture/graph as an Excel graph. Is there any way to
display an Excel graph in a form.

The last option would be to get the graph as a data set and the use
R:Charts to generate the graph. Since the graph is only used in one
form, seems like R:Charts would be an overkill.

On a separate note, is there a way to globally remove the design
password from all forms? I seem to remember there was a way to do it
but not having used R:base for a while now, I am somewhat rusty. I
have over 200 forms and I would prefer to do them all at once; I seem
to remember adding the design password to all the forms globally…but I
could be wrong.. ☹

Any ideas or suggestion will be appreciated.

Re: [RBASE-L] - where clause on sub tables/reports

2022-12-29 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Dan,

FWIW, in a report/form with Master and Slave Tables, the WHERE clause is
only pertinent to the Master table.

Alternatively ...

1. Based on your application and the desired results, you could prepare
the salve table(s) as *TEMPORARY tables/views *with the matching data
you need, dynamically, and then use those slave tables/views in reports
with your master table *WHERE clause*.

2. If appropriate, depending on the desired results, you could use the
*Custom Table Relationships* to limit the data from Slave Table. See
attached screenshot, for example. There are more complex examples to
customize all kind of requests.

That's how I do it, in a situation like yours!

Tip of the Day: Capturing Cell Information within DB Tree Grid Controls
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: DB Tree Grid, GETPROPERTY, Capture, Cell, Read-Only

Did you know that three new read-only properties were introduced for the
DB Tree Grid control to capture cell information?

With the new GETPROPERTY command parameters for DB Tree Grid controls,
the column index, row index, and field name may be captured for the
selected cell.

. SelectedColumn - returns the 0-based column index
. SelectedRow - returns the 0-based row index
. SelectedField - returns the field name associated with the selected
field

The "On Cell Click", "On Cell Right Click", and "On Cell Double Click"
EEP events are available for capturing the cell information.

Examples:

GETPROPERTY DBTreeGrid2 SELECTEDFIELD vActiveField

GETPROPERTY DBTreeGrid2 SELECTEDROW vActiveRow

GETPROPERTY DBTreeGrid2 SELECTEDCOLUMN vActiveColumn

Re: [RBASE-L] - Bit Button On-Click EEP variable values 77, 99

2022-12-27 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Bruce,

Apparently, you are using and/or recycling Razzak's sample application
forms in your own application, or at least trying to recycle. That's great!

However ...

The value assigned for the button [Continue]  vButton = 77, and value
assigned for the button [Cancel]  vButton = 99, is the indicator as to
how the form was closed. Then, based on the returned value you can
continue or cancel the process as you see fit.

There is more to that logic in my complex applications.

Hope it helps!

Very Best R:egards,

Razzak

Of what significance are the specific variable values "77" and "99",

SET VAR vbitButton INTEGER = 77
SET VAR vbitButton INTEGER = 99

If these represent Virtual-Key Codes (FormsManual.pdf, Section 1.8.3.4
p.1321), I'm not "getting" their correspondence to the mouse-clickery
of the Button.

Thoughts? And thanks.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Control Fast Accelerator Character Use within Group Bar Controls

2022-12-27 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, December 27, 2022

Tip of the Day: Control Fast Accelerator Character Use within Group Bar
Controls

Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Group Bar, Accelerator Character, Hot Key, PROPERTY

Did you know that a new PROPERTY command parameter was added to control
"fast accelerator character" use within Group Bar controls?

The REQUIREALTONACCELCHAR property specifies whether pressing the one
accelerator character is enough to activate that menu option, without
having to press the [Alt] key first,

within Group Bar controls.

  PROPERTY GroupBar1 REQUIREALTONACCELCHAR 'TRUE'

The parameter is False by default, for backwards compatibility.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Coordinate Hint When Resizing Form Objects

Tip of the Day: Coordinate Hint When Resizing Form Objects
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Coordinate, Resize, Handlebars, Object, Hint

Did you know that when resizing form objects, the width and/or height
coordinates appear as a hint once a handlebar is selected, and change as
the mouse is dragged?

When resizing objects, the width and/or height coordinates will appear
as a hint once you select a handlebar. The blue dot handlebars appear on
all four corners and all four sides.

The coordinates would change as you drag the mouse and change the size
of the field.

This very helpful feature was implemented in prior versions, was missing
in newer releases, and was added back!

Dan,

Based upon how the Enhanced DB Grid is initially displayed and sorted,
the same sort may be initiated again, to clear the row selections.

Here's how ...

PROPERTY SORTASC 'Value'

-- To Dynamically Sort the first column in ascending order
  PROPERTY DBGrid_Customers SortAsc '0'

-- To Dynamically Sort the Company column in ascending order
  PROPERTY DBGrid_Customers SortAsc 'Company'

The SORTDESC property is also available to sort the column in descending
order.

PROPERTY SORTDESC 'Value'

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Form Designer Productivity Tips

2022-11-10 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, November 10, 2022

Tip of the Day: Form Designer Productivity Tips
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11013 or higher
Sections..: Forms

Below are valuable tips to help get the most productivity out of the
R:BASE Form Designer:

. When the Form Designer is launched the main menu bar includes
options specific to the designer: Form, Edit, View, Layout, Table, and
Variables.

. When initially designing the form, you should create and place the
objects within a form so that is suitable for users with various screen
resolutions, preferable starting at 1024x768, as you never know the end
users' preferences.

. After objects are placed, and then is selected, small blue circles
appear around the four corners and four sides; called handlebars. When
more than one object is selected, red square handlebars are displayed.
The handlebars are extremely useful for editing the properties of more
than one object or moving more than one object. Hovering your cursor
over the handlebars for an individual object changes the pointer to a
double arrow. Holding down the left mouse button with the double arrow
lets you stretch or shrink the object.

. Multiple objects can be selected with the mouse cursor by lassoing
objects. The lasso appears as a dotted line while you drag the mouse
cursor. It works by starting in one corner of the work space, holding
down the left mouse button, and dragging the cursor to the opposite
corner. The lasso only needs to be touching the object in order to
select it for editing. When lassoing multiple objects that are contained
within a parent object, such as a panel, press and hold the [Ctrl] key
to lasso the objects.

. Right clicking on an object will display the context menu options.
The context menu will vary based upon the selected object.

. The properties for all field objects can be edited by right clicking
on the object and selecting "Object Property" from the context menu, or
by selecting the object and pressing the [F11] key on the keyboard. Each
object's properties vary depending on the type of control.

 . Use the [Shift+Right Arrow], [Shift+Left Arrow],[Shift+Up Arrow] or
[Shift+Down Arrow] key combinations to increase width, decrease width,
increase height or decrease height of any individual control or group of
selected controls.

 . Use the [Ctrl+Right Arrow], [Ctrl+Left Arrow],[Ctrl+Up Arrow] or
[Ctrl+Down Arrow] key combinations to accurately move any individual
control or group of selected controls.

. You can cut, copy and paste one or more form controls at a time,
either in the same form or between different forms. It is important to
note that when using copy and paste for form objects, the control being
copied will retain the Top, Left, Height and Width coordinates. This
logic is in place by design for the purpose of moving a control from one
form to another, where the control will appear in the same location with
the same size. This means when you copy an object that is is defined
with 800 pixels as the Left value, and paste it into a small Panel with
a 400 pixel width, the newly pasted object is another 400 pixels beyond
the panel's border, and not visible. Pressing the [Ctrl+Left Arrow] keys
will place the object where it is visible.

Tip of the Day: Report/Label Designer Productivity Tips
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11013 or higher
Sections..: Reports/Labels

Below are a valuable tips to help get the most productivity out of the
R:BASE Report/Label Designer. The list starts with basic information,
but the items become more involved further down.

If you wish, reply with "I did not know that..." for any interesting
item! Personally, I did not know that the "Existing" tab of the Object
List toolbar displays the "layer order" of the controls within each band!

Report/Label Designer Tips:

. When the Report Designer is launched the main menu bar includes
options specific to the designer: File, Edit, View, Report, and Variables.

 . Two tabs are located on the top left of the Report Designer;
"Design" and "Preview", where users can toggle between the report's
preview and design, before printing.

. The properties for all report objects may be adjusted by using the
right click context menu.

. To resize a report band, use the mouse by positioning the cursor
over the gray rectangular area (band) below the white space, press and
hold the left mouse button, and drag.

. You can cut, copy and paste one or more report controls at a time,
either in the same report or between different reports.

. You can paste external content (text, rich text, images) directly
into the Report Designer from the Windows clipboard.

. Use the "Format" toolbar options (Font Name, Font Size, Font Style,
and Justification) to set the font, size, style, colors, and
justification of objects.

. Use the "Align or Space" toolbar options to position controls
relative to one another and relative to the band in which they appear.

. Use the "Size" toolbar options to adjust the width and height of
controls.

. Use the "Nudge" toolbar options to move the controls by one pixel.

. When added new text-based label objects, select a control to mimic
before selecting the desired control. When placed, the new object will
take on the style, font, and size of the selected object, which saves
time when adding multiple objects.

 . Use the [Shift+Right Arrow], [Shift+Left Arrow],[Shift+Up Arrow] or
[Shift+Down Arrow] key combinations to accurately increase width,
decrease width, increase height or decrease height of any individual
control or group of selected controls.

 . Use the [Ctrl+Right Arrow], [Ctrl+Left Arrow],[Ctrl+Up Arrow] or
[Ctrl+Down Arrow] key combinations to accurately move any individual
control or group of selected controls.

. Set up the Page Size and Margins before placing any controls on
report bands. Select "File: Page Setup..." from the menu bar.

. The width of the page (white space) displayed in the Report Designer
is the actual width, after taking the page margins into consideration.

. To set the ruler units, use the "Report: Units" menu bar option or
right click on the ruler and select the appropriate unit from the
available context menu options. To hide the a ruler, right click on the
ruler and select 'Hide' from the speed menu options. The ruler may be
displayed again by selecting "View: Rulers" from the menu bar.

. The status bar, across the bottom on the designer window, provides
information about the select object such as the name, type, coordinates,
and/or table, column and variable details.

. You can position toolbars on any edge of the window and in any
order. Whether the toolbars are docked or floating, you will see the
hint for any toolbar button when the cursor is hovered over the button.
The designer will remember the last docked/floating setting when closing
the designer. From the menu bar, select the "View: Toolbars" option to
hide or show any toolbar.

. Use the Magnifying Glass utility to display a zoomed area of the
R:BASE environment and monitor, which is useful when editing objects
very close to each other. The Magnifying Glass can be launched by
selecting the "Utilities: Magnifying Glass" menu bar option or using the
[Ctrl+Alt+M] key combination.

. The Preview tab displays only the first 100 records in the
table/view. The record count can be decreased or increased in the
Default Report/Label Settings. To view the Default Report/Label
Settings, choose "Settings: Report/Label Designer: Default Settings"
from the menu bar. A custom WHERE clause may be entered and applied to
the preview results with the "Report: Preview WHERE Clause" menu option.
The specified WHERE clause replaces the default (100 records) display
limit for the preview results. The Preview WHERE Clause can be launched
with the [Ctrl+Shift+P] key combination.

. To assign object display formats, right click on a field to use the
context menu to view the "Display Format" dialog. R:BASE will determine
the data type assigned to the object and display several formats
appropriate for that data

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Manually Trigger Required Value Checks on Form Fields

2022-10-14 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tip of the Day: Manually Trigger Required Value Checks on Form Fields
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11013 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Check Required Value, GETPROPERTY, Field, On Close

Did you know that, in addition to the right click context menu option,
the GETPROPERTY command has been enhanced at the form level to trigger
required value checks manually upon form fields?

The "Check Required Value" feature checks if a field has a value (not
empty), and displays an error message or warning if the required value
is not present. In the Form Designer, there are "required value" options
that may be defined for database and variable controls within the right
click context menu options. When enabled, a value for the field is
checked when the form is closed.

. Check Required Value on Form Close - specifies the control is checked
if it has a value in the form's "On Close" event
. Required Value Error Message - specifies the message if a value does
not exist for the control

In the event that the field is left empty, and the form is closed, the
defined error message will appear.

With the GETPROPERTY command, an EEP may be defined as below, to
manually trigger the required value check on the field, and close the
form if values are present:

GETPROPERTY RBASE_FORM CheckRequiredValues 'vState'
IF vState = 'OK' THEN
   SAVEROW
   CLOSEWINDOW
ENDIF

If the required value is intended to be a warning, and also for easier
development of several fields within a form, the below application
property was introduced to display a warning dialog, with an "Ignore"
button.

PROPERTY APPLICATION STRICT_VALUE_REQUIREMENTS ON

The default value is ON. When ON, the error dialog displayed. When OFF,
the warning dialog is displayed.

The following online help page provides additional details, as well as
the list of supported controls:

Or should I submit as an enhancement or fix?

Tip of the Day: Specify a Custom Font in PDF Output with Font
Substitutions

Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.5.11013 or higher
Sections..: Reports/Labels
Keywords..: PDF, PROPERTY, Font Substitution, TrueType, Device Font

Did you know that you can specify a replacement font for all
reports/labels using the MS San Serif device font when printing to PDF
output?

When printing to the PDF output, the MS Sans Serif device font is
substituted with Helvetica (native PDF font), which is wider than MS
Sans Serif, and may result in characters being truncated.

The substitution logic is true for all device fonts, which is
indicated by a monitor icon in the font drop-down, within the Report
Designer's Format toolbar. MS Sans Serif is in the Swiss font family
which are recognized by variable stroke widths, which are proportional
to the actual widths of the glyphs, and which do not have serifs.

R:BASE has been updated to optionally change the replacement font for
all reports/labels using the MS San Serif device font, or any fonts in
the Swiss font family, when printing to PDF output. Any TrueType font
can be used for the substitution.

The following command may be used at the R:BASE startup to specify a
replacement font:

PROPERTY REPORT PDF_SERIF_FONT_REPLACEMENT 'Arial'

To clear a substitution, use the following command to pass a space as
the font name.

PROPERTY REPORT PDF_SERIF_FONT_REPLACEMENT ' '

Re: [RBASE-L] - Importing Data From Text File

2022-10-07 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Gary,

R:BASE is not freezing up, but is actually processing the 6 million row
file, as you instructed it to.

When testing different import setting and OPTION parameters, try working
with a limited data set. Once you have successfully imported the limited
data set, perform the same on the actual file.

The text qualifier (' or ") and delimiter (|) appear to be custom and
the file is not actually a CSV file. In the GATEWAY command, you may use
the CUS import format to specify custom QUALIFIER and SEPARATOR values.
If you are unsure what text qualifier is used, you may "peek" into the
import file with R:BASE Editor by selecting "File" > "File Peek" from
the main menu bar.

Please note the import process will take time, based upon your
computer's memory and processor. You may have to leave R:BASE running
for some time as all of the data is verified before it is loaded with
the Gateway utility.

If you otherwise do "not" want the data verification, try using the LOAD
command. LOAD will force the data with no verification, and takes less
time as a result. With the LOAD command, remove the first row of column
names. And, the DELIMIT character setting should be adjusted to the pipe
character. "SET DELIMIT=|" Again, try working with a limited data set
initially.

Very Best Regards,

Razzak

The file I am trying to import is from the State of Washington. It’s a

I have tried importing into an existing table with the same column
names, length, and data type as the data file, and I have tried
importing using the create a new table. Unfortunately, nothing seems
to work for me.

I am using RBase X.5 Enterprise Version 10.5.5.10818.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Maintaining Efficiency with QualKeys in Foreign Data Sources

2022-08-04 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, August 4, 2022

Tip of the Day: Maintaining Efficiency with QualKeys in Foreign Data Sources
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: ODBC
Keywords..: SATTACH, QualKey, QUALCOLS, DSN, Data Source

Adding foreign data sources to an R:BASE database allows applications
to access tables from multiple databases simultaneously.

When you access other databases, you are working with the actual
data, not a copy. Not only can you view information from other
databases, but you can modify and add information, depending on the
access rights provided.

The first steps in attaching foreign data sources include being
connecting to the R:BASE database, establishing the data source, and
then connecting that DSN (data source name). In doing so, multiple
data sources may be connected to concurrently.

Attaching foreign data source tables may be done with the SATTACH
command or selecting "Utilities > Attach SQL Database Tables" from
the main menu bar. It is with the table attach/SATTACH where the
method and R:BASE settings must be considered to maintain ideal
performance with the foreign data source.

When tables are attached, a QualKey column definition is assigned for
columns that uniquely identifies a row, similar to a primary key or
unique key. The QualKey is assigned based upon the method the table
is attached to the database, and is used by R:BASE to link server data.

There are three different methods in which QualKeys are specified
when tables are attached, and are ordered below by efficiency:

01.
SATTACH TableName USING ColumnList - uses the specified column(s) to
assigned the QualKey that uniquely identify the rows. The ColumnList
is not limited to a single column, but the more columns that are
specified, then those column values must also match in WHERE clause
conditions. A primary key should be specified as the ColumnList value.

02.
SATTACH TableName - automatically inquires with the foreign data
source to find the optimal primary key column defined for the table
being attached. If the column inquiry fails or does not find a
primary key column, then QualKeys are defined based on the value for
the QUALOCOLS setting, starting with the first column of the table.
The number of columns assigned a QualKey is limited by the QUALCOLS value.

03.
SATTACH TableName USING ALL - assigns all columns as QualKeys

When performing a direct UPDATE to the foreign table, the USING ALL
approach is the slowest in processing, which means that to qualify a
row for updating, all of the column values must match. Rather, if a
primary key exists, specify the column with USING PrimaryKeyColName
instead, as this way, only the primary key value must match (which is
all that should be needed). When updating a row on the foreign table,
R:BASE must count how many rows match that row, and there should only
be one matching row.

The origin of the QUALCOLS setting came into being when R:BASE first
started attaching foreign data sources. QUALCOLS specifies the number
of QualKeys to assign to SQL attached tables.

If a primary key was not found for the SATTACHed table, and a USING
ColumnList was not specified for what columns uniquely identify a
row, then R:BASE assigns a set of columns to identify that row
starting with the first column of the table. The number of columns
used was limited by the value for QUALCOLS. The word was derived by
knowing that R:BASE could QUALify a row by using a set of COLumnS.

As noted, QUALCOLS is only used when 1) no primary key can be found
for the table or 2) the attach process does not specify a USING
clause in the SATTACH command.

As is it more likely for a primary key to be located at the beginning
(first or second column) of a table structure, setting QUALCOLS to 2
would assign QualKeys to the first two columns. The following command
sets QUALCOLS to 2:

SET QUALCOLS 2

To determine what columns have been assigned a QualKey for foreign
data sources, use the LIST TABLE command. QualKeys are defined in the
column attributes.

R>LIST TABLE Albums

   Table: albums No Lock(s)
Descr: Server table - Albums BluzVan
Last structure modification: 08/03/2022 11:39 AM

   5 Artist_ID Type : TEXT 10
   6 MusicType Type : TEXT 10
   7 Comments Type : NOTE 4092
   Current number of rows:SERVER

The Albums table was attached from a DSN assigned to the BluzVan
sample database. The "SATTACH Albums" command was used, and R:BASE
was able to determine the Album_ID column as the primary key, and
assign the QualKey accordingly.

Claes-Robert,

What is your LINES setting?

The LINES setting assigns the number of lines per page when you use
your CROSSTAB command, and will repeat the column header for each
page. The default value is 20.

Setting LINES to zero displays lines as continuous output, with only
one row of columns.

Re: [RBASE-L] - Sauvegarde de tables dans une nouvelle base

2022-08-04 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Hello Jean-Marc,

The UNLOAD command is able to create your database from the desired tables.

The "FOR DATABASE" and "NOSCHEMA" keywords in the
UNLOAD syntax will allow you to unload the
specific structure and data portions needed for just those tables.

Using the RRBYW20 sample database, the below
moves the Customer and Contact tables, with
structure and data, into a new database.

OUTPUT CreateDatabase.rmd
UNLOAD STRUCTURE FOR DATABASE
UNLOAD STRUCTURE FOR Customer NOSCHEMA
UNLOAD STRUCTURE FOR Contact NOSCHEMA
UNLOAD DATA FOR Customer NOSCHEMA
UNLOAD DATA FOR Contact NOSCHEMA
OUTPUT SCREEN

Your routine must also unload/create the tables
in the order following the primary key and
foreign key relationships, with primary key tables being unload/create first.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Archiving Table Data in R:BASE

2022-07-27 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Wednesday, July 27, 2022

Tip of the Day: Archiving Table Data in R:BASE
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Maintenance
Keywords..: Archive, Table, Data, Performance, ODBC

Archiving tables in R:BASE databases is an ideal strategy to move
infrequently accessed records, but are still of historical importance.

Data growth will impact an application's performance over time. With
each new transaction, inactive data grows putting more pressure on
application performance and availability. Operations and compliance
concerns may arise, and batch jobs, data replication, and disaster
recovery all run slower making users wait longer. Extended downtime
must also be planned to convert legacy data to new releases during
upgrade cycles.

Only the tables with a large number of records would be archived. An
archive point (specific date or column value) would be best
determined by you and application users/staff where the archive data is moved.

Archive tables may be stored in the existing database, or moved to
another database entirely, to be accessed via ODBC.

To create an archive table for an OrderHeader table within the
current database, use the following steps:

PROJECT OrderHeader_Archived FROM OrderHeader USING * WHERE LIMIT = 0
APPEND OrderHeader TO OrderHeader_Archived WHERE OrderDate <= 12/31/2020
DELETE ROWS FROM OrderHeader WHERE OrderDate <= 12/31/2020

You can otherwise use an unique identifier value (OrderID) for the
WHERE clause, to maintain primary key/foreign key relationships.

PROJECT OrderHeader_Archived FROM OrderHeader USING * WHERE LIMIT = 0
APPEND OrderHeader TO OrderHeader_Archived WHERE OrderID < 1002587
DELETE ROWS FROM OrderHeader WHERE OrderID < 1002587

PROJECT OrderDetails_Archived FROM OrderDetails USING * WHERE LIMIT = 0
APPEND OrderDetails TO OrderDetails_Archived WHERE OrderID < 1002587
DELETE ROWS FROM OrderDetails WHERE OrderID < 1002587

To use another database to stored archive records, the original
database table structure can be unloaded, to build an empty
repository. Then, the data may be unloaded using the desired WHERE
clause for the specific archive point.

If you will use the archive table for searching prior records, the
constraints should be added to maintain optimal performance. The
constraints may be unloaded from the original tables (UNLOAD
STRUCTURE...), and altered for use with the intended archive table.
The archive table constraints would match the original table
constraints, where the primary/foreign keys link the archive tables.
Only constraints related to the intended use would need to be
applied, as querying the records would still take place. However,
rules may not be needed if new data will no longer be added on a
row-by-row basis. The added indexes to the archive tables will not
effect the overall database performance.

Once the archive tables and record transfer process has been
completed, a PACK/RELOAD must be performed upon the database.

If there is a need to query both current and archive records, perhaps
more records would be left in the current tables, and less would be
archived. Or, based upon the intended use, the original and archive
content may be inserted into a temporary table for specific reports
and queries.

Dick,

Once the printer is installed and configured as
"Default Printer" on each workstation, you don't need to do anything.

However, if you wish to show the current default
(R:BASE Session Printer), you may define the "On
Before Start EEP" with the following variable and
place the variable somewhere on your main menu.

SET VAR vSessionPrinter TEXT = ('R:BASE Session

At the Database Explorer, right click on the

My understanding is that INSERT will attempt to

But evidence (log table entries) indicates that

Did you know that you can specify whether or not to have images
automatically rotate in reports and labels?

A new PROPERTY command parameter for reports and labels, was
introduced to auto-rotate images based upon the EXIF file information.

PROPERTY APPLICATION AUTO_ROTATE_IMAGE ON|OFF

When ON, the AUTO_ROTATE_IMAGE property will auto-rotate images using
EXIF information for DB Image and Variable Image controls. The
default value is OFF.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Enhanced Debug Details for Database Character Setting Corruption

2022-06-28 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, June 28, 2022

Tip of the Day: Enhanced Debug Details for Database Character Setting
Corruption

Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Settings
Keywords..: Corruption, Character Setting, Debug

Did you know that enhancements were made to help detect how, when,
and why the database character setting values may get corrupted?

Whenever the setting data is read from file 1 (i.e., .RX1, .RB1), the
date sequence will be checked to make sure the numbers are valid
numbers. If the values are not expected, the current command and a
mini-dump of the setting data will be created in a debug.err file.

If another portion of file 1 is bad, it may lead to the creation of
the .RX0 or .RB0 structure diagnostic file, which will match the
database name (e.g., RRBYW20.RX0, RRBYW20.RB0).

If the files are created, review the file contents. Both of the files
may be opened with any text editor.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Adjusting the Default Font of the BLOB Editor's Text Tab

2022-06-27 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Monday, June 27, 2022

Tip of the Day: Adjusting the Default Font of the BLOB Editor's Text Tab
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: BLOB Editor, Default, Text, Font

Did you know that you can adjust the default font of the BLOB
Editor's "Text" tab?

Additional PROPERTY command parameters have been introduced to alter
the default font for the Text tab page of the BLOB Editor:

PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_NAME 'Value'
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_SIZE 'Value'
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_BOLD
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_ITALIC
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_UNDERLINE
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_STRIKEOUT
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_NORMAL ' '

The commands will update the default settings, so values passed are
"saved" once the BLOB Editor is closed. The DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_NORMAL
parameter uses a normal font for the Text page, removing any bold,
italic, underline, and strikeout style in place.

When opening the BLOB Editor using the RBBEDIT command, the PROPERTY
commands must be executed first, before launching the BLOB Editor.
When opening the Data Browser using the BROWSE/EDIT commands, the
PROPERTY commands must be executed first, before launching the Data Browser.

Example:

PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_NAME Verdana
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_SIZE 10
PROPERTY BLOB_EDITOR DEFAULT_TEXT_FONT_BOLD ON

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Performing UTF-8 File Encoding Without BOM (Byte-Order Mark)

2022-06-24 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Friday, June 24, 2022

Tip of the Day: Performing UTF-8 File Encoding Without BOM (Byte-Order Mark)
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: FCONVERT, UTF-8, ANSI, File Encoding, BOM

Did you know that file encoding conversions to UTF-8 with BOM can now
be performed?

The FCONVERT command has been enhanced to convert files to the UTF-8
without BOM (Byte-Order Mark) file encoding.

To do so, add the NONE keyword at the end of the FCONVERT command to
specify the UTF-8 only file encoding.

FCONVERT ANSI CloudLog.csv TO UTF8 CloudLog_UTF8.csv NONE

The FCONVERT command is used to perform file encoding conversions
between ANSI, UTF-8, UTF-8 BOM, Unicode, and Base64 files.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Assigning Fixed Columns to Enhanced DB Grids

2022-06-22 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Tip of the Day: Assigning Fixed Columns to Enhanced DB Grids
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Enhanced DB Grid, Column, Fixed, Lock, Options

Did you know that a menu option has been added for Enhanced DB Grids
to specify the number of fixed columns?

The ability to assign fixed columns for Enhanced DB Grids has been
supported through the PROPERTY command. However, there was no menu
option, to easily assign a value.

The "Fixed Columns" menu option was added within the Enhanced DB Grid
property editor, to specifies the number of columns on the left of
the grid that are fixed, and cannot be scrolled. Fixed columns is
similar to how "locked columns" behave in the Data Browser.

Below is an example of the PROPERTY command to specify that 2 columns
on the left of the grid cannot be scrolled.

PROPERTY ContactDetails FIXEDCOLS '2'

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Specifying No Text Qualifier for GATEWAY Command Exports

2022-06-21 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Tip of the Day: Specifying No Text Qualifier for GATEWAY Command Exports
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: GATEWAY, Export, QUALIFIER, NONE, CSV, TAB, SQL

Did you know that the GATEWAY EXPORT command was enhanced to specify
NONE as a valid value for the QUALIFIER parameter?

In the Export Wizard, there has always been a menu option to select
"None" as the text qualifier. However, when choosing to perform an
export using the command syntax, there is not a NONE option for the
QUALIFIER parameter.

Support is now added for the GATEWAY EXPORT command to specify NONE
as a valid value for the QUALIFIER parameter, for CSV, TAB, and SQL
file formats.

GATEWAY EXPORT CSV StorageUnits.csv +
SELECT * FROM SUnits +
OPTION BLANK_IF_ZERO OFF +
|SHOW_PROGRESS ON +
|QUALIFIER NONE

The QUALIFIER parameter specifies the text qualifier for fields in
the target export file. The popular value is quotes ("), but you can
define any custom character you wish. Use the keyword PIPE as the
value if you wish to use the pipe character (|)as the qualifier. Use
the keyword NONE if you wish to specify no text qualifier.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Setting to Toggle Sending Deleted Files to the Recycle Bin

2022-06-20 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Monday, June 20, 2022

Tip of the Day: Setting to Toggle Sending Deleted Files to the Recycle Bin
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Settings
Keywords..: Database Explorer, Delete, Recycle Bin, Database Files

Have you ever accidentally deleted a database from Database Explorer?
Ouch! Unfortunately, there was no way to restore the deleted database.

Thankfully, we have created an amazingly capable feature in the
latest update of R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5).

A new setting is introduced where deleted database files are now sent
to the Recycle Bin.

In the Database Explorer, a setting is added where users can toggle
sending deleted files to the Recycle Bin. The default is enabled.

File-based objects (external form files (.rff), application files
(.rba), and command files) are already sent to the Recycle Bin.
However, with this new setting, database files are now also sent to
the Recycle Bin. Prior to the update, deleted database file were
permanently removed from the computer, and were not sent to Recycle Bin.

Select "Settings > Database Explorer > Move Deleted Files to Recycle
Bin" from the main menu bar.

To recover deleted database files on your PC:

. Right click on the Recycle Bin icon on desktop.
. Select Open from the context menu to view files.
. Check the box and select files you want to recover.
. Right click on a selected file.
. Choose 'Restore' to recover the file to its original location.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Detecting the Type of Network Connection

2022-06-17 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Friday, June 17, 2022

Tip of the Day: Detecting the Type of Network Connection
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20616 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: GETPROPERTY, Connection Type, Network, Adapter

Did you know that new GETPROPERTY command
parameters were implemented to detect the network connection type?

NETWORKCONNECTIONTYPE and NETWORKCONNECTIONTYPEEX
are new parameters for the GETPROPERTY command.

NetworkConnectionType returns network connection
type, with possible values being: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Unknown.

NetworkConnectionTypeEx is an expanded
implementation of the property which considers
the network adapter's metrics and returns the
network connection type and name of the adapter,
with possible return values being: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth.

GETPROPERTY APPLICATION NetworkConnectionTypeEx vConType
SHOW VAR vConType
vConType = Ethernet, ASIX AX88179 USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

The ability to detect the network connection type
is an ideal feature, especially for reliable connections to the database.

Hello John,

Are you able to launch the help from the Database
Explorer menus, such as Database Explorer >
Databases > Help, which launches the help for the Database Explorer module?

There are also help buttons within the Form
Designer's Property Editors for each control, and
elsewhere throughout menus and dialog boxes.

It would also be a good test to try and launch
the R:BASE help from the C:\ drive, to see if there is a difference.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: New Rule Notification for Dropped Columns

2022-05-11 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Wednesday, May 11, 2022

Tip of the Day: New Rule Notification for Dropped Columns
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Data Designer
Keywords..: Rule, Column, Table, Warning

Did you know that a notification will now appear after a column is
dropped from a table, where a rule is defined for that column?

After dropping a column, the rules are now checked. If a rule for the
table becomes invalid, an error message about the now dropped column
will be displayed, similar to the message when a table/view is
dropped and a view is dependent on that dropped table/view.

A rule is a condition placed upon a column, which R:BASE checks
during data entry to ensure that the data meets specific criteria.

Rules can be created with predefined options, or with custom rules.
Rules can be set to work with data entry and data deletion. A data
entry rule ensures that the data entered into a column meets the
criteria you specify. A data deletion rule ensures that data deleted
in a column also meets specified criteria.

When you enter/edit or delete data, R:BASE checks the data with the
corresponding rules. If the conditions of a particular rule are not
met, R:BASE displays the error message defined for that rule. Rules
can even be set to fail to meet conditions, and otherwise, R:BASE
displays the error message defined for that rule.

Rules may be turned ON and OFF on demand with the RULES setting.

Syntax.: SET RULES ON/OFF
Default: ON

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Added Condition for PROPERTY TABLE Command Searches

2022-05-10 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, May 10, 2022

Tip of the Day: Added Condition for PROPERTY TABLE Command Searches
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Search, PROPERTY, Table, Equals, Contains

Did you know that form searches performed with
the PROPERTY command may now use exact criteria?

By default, the search functionality uses
CONTAINS as the condition. If a search is
performed for the value "10", the result will
return anything that has 10 in it, such as 710, A10, 100, 1010, etc.

Syntax:

PROPERTY TABLE FormTableName SEARCH->FormColumnName-> VarName

The added EQUAL condition allows searches to
always retrieve the exact record desired.

To search using EQUALS (exact search), add a
equal character and enclose the search criteria
in double quotes; "=(" and ")" .

PROPERTY TABLE 'ContactCallNotes' 'SEARCH->CallNotes->=(SearchText)'

The EQUALS criteria also provides more efficient
usage, where with proper indexing the retrieval is faster.

Notes:

. The parameter is supported for the PROPERTY command only.
. The search method uses CONTAINS (partial
search) by default to locate any text, which matches the provided criteria.
. To search using EQUALS (exact search), add a
equal character and enclose the search criteria
in double quotes; "=(" and ")" .

Example 01:
--Where the following command is used within a "On DB Grid Cell Click" EEP
--and a Variable Edit field "contains" the search criteria.
--GETPROPERTY DBGrid_Customer CurrentColumnName vColumnName

SET VAR vSearchString TEXT = NULL
SET VAR vSearchString = +
('PROPERTY TABLE Customer SEARCH->'+.vColumnName+'->'+.vSearchValue)

RETURN

Example 02:
--Where the following command is used within a "On DB Grid Cell Click" EEP
--and a Variable Edit field "equals" the search criteria.
--GETPROPERTY DBGrid_Customer CurrentColumnName vColumnName

SET VAR vSearchString TEXT = NULL
SET VAR vSearchString = +
('PROPERTY TABLE Customer SEARCH->'+.vColumnName+'->=('+.vSearchValue+')')

RETURN

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Unloading Database Structure with Temporary Tables/Views

2022-05-03 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Tip of the Day: Unloading Database Structure with Temporary Tables/Views
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: UNLOAD, Temporary, Table, View, STRUCTURE, ALL

Did you know that if there are temporary tables/views in a database
when an UNLOAD ALL or UNLOAD STRUCTURE is performed, the temporary
table/view definitions will now be included in the output?

The change was implemented for the benefit of database structures
which contain views based upon on temporary tables/views, which are
defined initially, and then dynamically deleted and recreated with
required data sets throughout an application.

With such structures in mind, when the database rebuild is performed
from an UNLOAD ALL or UNLOAD STRUCTURE errors are encountered when
rebuilding the views based upon on temporary views. Also, the order
in which the views are unloaded and subsequently rebuilt are not in
the order where those views dependent on other views are last.

Now, the following is implemented:

01.
If there are temporary tables/views in a database when an UNLOAD ALL
or UNLOAD STRUCTURE is performed, the temporary table/view
definitions will now be unloaded as well. Prior to this change, the
only way to unload a temporary table definition was to specifically
name the table in the UNLOAD command.

02.
If a table or view needed to define a view cannot be found, after the
error message about the missing item, you will get another message to
identify the view that R:BASE was trying to create.

Also, did you know that the database schema stores the internal order
in which tables and views were defined?

When the database structure is unloaded, the internal order is used
for primary key tables to be created before foreign key tables. Views
are also stored in the order of creation, where views based on other
views are unloaded after all the other views it is dependent upon.

If any view that another view it is dependent upon is deleted and
redefined, a PACK SCHEMA should be performed. Then, the view with the
dependencies should be deleted and recreated. This would place the
view with the dependencies after all the other views it is dependent
upon within the internal order.

The steps would ensure a database UNLOAD and rebuild is successful
where views with the dependencies are created last!

Tip of the Day: Enhanced PACK PASSWORD Command
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Commands
Keywords..: PACK, PASSWORD, User Privileges, Maintenance

Did you know that the PACK PASSWORD command was enhanced to better
clear out bogus rows?

When using the PACK PASSWORD command, the underlying logic will now
perform a "PACK TABLE SYS_PASSWORDS" routine to internally remove
deleted rows.

The PACK operation will also set the system table row count to match
the actual row count after performing the PACK.

The PACK PASSWORD command is supported in multi-user sessions. The
database must be connected in order to use the PACK PASSWORD command.

Performance boosting improvements have also been made when connecting
to password protected databases, and when identifying permissions for
USER accounts!

For users interested in implementing password protection for their
databases, the "Managing User Privileges" technical document is available.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Control the Folder Location for Data Browser Exports

2022-04-26 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

Tip of the Day: Control the Folder Location for Data Browser Exports
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Data Browser
Keywords..: Export, System Variable, Folder, Default

Did you know that you can control the folder location for Data Browser exports?

A new RBTI_EXPORT_FOLDER system variable is available to define a
default drive and folder path for Data Browser exports to prompt initially.

SET VAR RBTI_EXPORT_FOLDER TEXT = 'D:\UserExports'

When the Data Browser "Export Results to" menu option is selected for
the current query, the dialog will initially start in the specified folder.

If the variable does not exist or contains a non-valid folder path,
all export dialogs will launch within the current folder.

The new system variable is similar to the existing RBTI_IMG_FOLDER
system variable, which is available for defining the default image load folder.

The default export location when exporting data from the Data Browser
is helpful for database administrators to pass a different folder
than the database folder, to prevent users from cluttering up the
database folder.

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Automatic Scrolling Text in Memo/Rich Edit Controls

2022-04-20 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, April 21, 2022

Tip of the Day: Automatic Scrolling Text in Memo/Rich Edit Controls
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20421 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Scroll, Automatic, Interval, Memo, Rich Edit

Did you know that you can configure memo and rich edit controls to
automatically scroll the text contents?

Two new form properties, AutoScrollInterval and AutoScrollContent,
were added to allow automatic scrolling in all memos and rich edit controls.

The "Auto-Scroll Interval" property can only be defined within the
Form Designer. The interval value specifies the length of time, in
milliseconds, for the scrolling text to advance.

The AutoScrollContent property specifies to "begin scrolling" for the
content of the form control, which can only be assigned (TRUE/FALSE)
at runtime with the PROPERTY command.

PROPERTY OrderNotes AUTOSCROLLCONTENT 'TRUE'

The text within the object will automatically scroll, and when
reaching the end of the text, resets to the top and continues scrolling.

The DB Memo, Variable Memo, Advanced DB Rich Edit, Advanced Variable
Rich Edit, DB Rich Edit, Variable Rich Edit, DB Unicode Memo, and
Variable Unicode Memo controls allow automatic scrolling.

where scrapbook entries can be added for reuse. As a MDI window, the
Scrapbook stays visible while the appropriate area is focused for
object placement!

Scrapbook items may include commonly used objects, button panels,
report regions, radio groups, grids, controls that have been tweaked
to perfection, etc. The Form Designer and Report/Label Designer each
have their own scrapbook repository.

Build.: 10.5.4.20222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Pop-up Menu, Default, Selection, Value

Did you notice the enhanced behavior for pop-up menus, where the
current value is now automatically assigned the default selection?

When a pop-up menu is displayed for DB Edit, DB Memo, Variable Edit,

Expression with Column)

. Specify a dynamic WHERE Clause
. Display of distinct values
. Automatic pop-up menu display
. Custom menu Caption value
. Custom Title background color and font
. Automatic focus shift to the next object
. Custom menu Title value
. Custom List background color and font

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Perform Silent/Hidden Camera Captures

2022-02-25 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Friday, February 25, 2022

Tip of the Day: Perform Silent/Hidden Camera Captures
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: Image, Capture, PROPERTY, Camera, Timeout, Hide

Did you know that the "capture from video" functionality has been
enhanced to support silent/hidden camera snap shots?

With the enhanced CaptureFromVideoEx PROPERTY command parameter, an
image may be captured from the dialog window without having to press
the OK button.

As the CaptureFromVideoEx dialog may take a second or two to focus
when initialized, the silent mode can be set to pause for a defined
millisecond prior to the image capture.

Two extra parameters were added to the CaptureFromVideoEx parameter
for the DB Image and Variable Image controls.

: auto-click wait time (milliseconds). Default = 0
: shows/hides the camera. Default = SHOW_CAMERA

Syntax (last two are new):

PROPERTY CaptureFromVideoEx '
 '

The fifth parameter (to show/hide the camera) is only interpreted if
 is not zero.

Example:

-- Captures a JPG image after two seconds, without displaying the dialog,
-- using a maximum width and height dimensions of 320x240 pixels:
PROPERTY EmployeePhoto CaptureFromVideoEx 'JPG 320 240 2000 HIDE_CAMERA'

[RBASE-L] - Tip of the Day: Simulate Mouse Double Click and Right Click in Forms

2022-02-24 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Thursday, February 24, 2022

Tip of the Day: Simulate Mouse Double Click and Right Click in Forms
Product...: R:BASE X.5 and R:BASE X.5 Enterprise (Version 10.5)
Build.: 10.5.4.20222 or higher
Sections..: Forms
Keywords..: PROPERTY, Double Click, Right Click, EEP, Pup-up Menu

Did you know that you can simulate a mouse double click and a mouse
right click in forms?

New PROPERTY command parameters were implemented to simulate a mouse
double click and a mouse right click for form controls.

The syntax may be used to fire the control' appropriate EEP (On
Double Click/On Right Click), as well as to display pop-up menu items
in List View controls.

-- Simulates a double click for the Customer Name field
   PROPERTY CustomerName MAKEDBLCLICK ' '

-- Simulates a right click for the Customer List View
  PROPERTY CustomerList MAKERIGHTCLICK ' '

The last parameter will accept any value for the PROPERTY command.

The MAKEDBLCLICK and MAKERIGHTCLICK properties are similar to the
MAKECLICK property, which specifies to fire the "On Click" EEP for
button controls, simulating a mouse click.

Bruce,

Brilliant!

As you all know, I don't ration my passion, I share it!

I have been an elite member of US Airways and now
American Airlines for over 30 years. This is
something very close to my heart, that I have
been wanting to do since the introduction of new
AAdvantage Loyalty Points by American Airlines!
And the idea that this tool could potentially help other elite members.

And, to introduce R:BASE and its unlimited
capabilities to a whole new audience (in
millions) outside the current R:BASE world!

For R:BASE community and developers, this is an
example of developing and deploying R:BASE and
Java applications on MS Windows Desktop and secure Cloud environment, like AWS.

Thank you!

Introducing Loyalty Points Calculator (Powered by R:BASE®)
Â
Since the announcement of the new AAdvantage®
(American Airlines' frequent flyer program) on
October 26, 2021, I have been fascinated by
Loyalty Points and the ways one can earn those
points by flying on American Airlines and oneworld partners.

Â
Being passionate about American Airlines, it
was a challenge, and a brainchild was born
during the holidays, thus the development of
Loyalty Points Calculator, both desktop and web
versions. Managing the technology business for
over 30 years and working in the database
world, made it easy to conceptualize and turn the challenge into reality.

Â
Powered by R:BASE® (Robust SQL Engine), there
are two versions of Loyalty Points Calculator:

Re: [RBASE-L] - PRINT

2022-02-04 Thread A. Razzak Memon

Jan,

Here's how ...

Use the RBTI_PRNDEFFILE system variable to define the default file
name for the "Print to File" print dialog, before the dialog is launched.

SET VAR RBTI_PRNDEFFILE TEXT = 'InventoryReport.pdf'

The below report-based RBTI system variables are also available:

RBTI_PRNDEFDIR - defines the default directory for the "Print to
File" print dialog, before the dialog is launched

SET VAR RBTI_PRNDEFDIR TEXT = 'C:\Temp\'

RBTI_PRNDEFFILET - defines the default output type for the "Print to
File" print dialog, before the dialog is launched

SET VAR RBTI_PRNDEFFILET TEXT = 'Adobe PDF File'

Have fun!

All,

I thought I'd seen this before but I'm not sure.

Most of the time printing a report to SCREEN is the preferred option.
However, when I want to "Print to a file" from the SCREEN, the file name
shows as the called report i.e. PRINT MyReport shows up as MyReport in the
print to file area.

Is there a way to pre-define what that filename will be?

I'm not interested in printing as PDF and launching.
