I used to carry a CrankBros multi-with chain tool but the chaintool bit broke on the trail when I was trying to fix a guys chain. I carry a separate Park mini chain tool now. [RBW] Re: On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?
Great thread, Joan!! Picked up a few new (great ideas), and have a few to add. I guess the size of my kit is relative to the length of the ride, but I do have core kit that I keep in a nylon zip pouch (that I can quickly transfer between bike bags). Having a large seat bag on each of my bikes is like having extra trunk space in your car... doesn't really add much weight, but boy does it come in handy when you need it. +1 to: - Park CT-6.2 folding chain tool (with peening anvil.. love this; haven't peened anything, but I sleep well at night just knowing it's there)... all kidding aside, this is the BEST chain tool ever, with enough leverage to break a motorcycle chain - Tyvek (for tire repair)... I always have used a dollar bill, but this will (literally) save me a buck - $20... brilliant... for those didn't-have-time-to-get-to-the-ATM moments - FixIt Sticks...Great idea, would probably opt for the steel version (weight be damned) for durability - M5 bolts... true, one missing bolt can ruin your whole day - Fibre fix - Great idea, can't believe I've never seen this! - Quick link - use em all the time... GREAT for grafting sections of chain for different (SS) gear configurations Other: - Pump - realizing that's a given, I use a Topeak Mountain Morph... fits in all my saddle bags and packs, and acts like a floor pump. - SPD cleats AND SCREWS! for those rides where I prefer to clip in... saved my neck more than once - Zip ties (assorted, folded inside a segment of tube).. have been known to substitute zip ties for missing M5 bolts - Small bottle of chain lube and rag... nothing worse than a squeaky chain Peace, BB On Monday, April 28, 2014 9:28:55 PM UTC-4, Joan wrote: I'm in the market for a new multi-tool for on-bike repairs and adjustments. Sorry to respond to my own thread but I was exploring the Shimano worldwide sites and I see that there are some nice silver bits in the Trekking line. Top pull, bottom pull, dual pull, top swing, bottom swing, traditional, etc, etc. So I found these SRAM x9 derailers that are all silver. However, they are not available in 28.6, only 31.8. [RBW] My first Riv and a general introduction
Hi all! Thought I'd give a quick introduction and share some photos of my first Riv - a used Atlantis which I just picked up two days ago! I've been following the group conversations for about the past year, with limited participation but much enjoyment. I feel as if I know half the people personally by now. I've been saving my pennies for a Rivendell for a long time. I am located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and in June my wife and I are heading to California for 12 days, capping the trip off with a visit to the Riv Headquarters. I had intended to pickup a new Sam Hillborne, but last week a 58cm Atlantis popped up online and it was just too good to pass up. It has its fair share of paint scratches, but no dings or dents. I figure the first owner did me a favour and now I can shred it hard and not fret about putting the first scratch in the paint! I have most of the parts en route, and I'll be building the wheels up in a week or so (SONdelux front, Phil Wood rear hubs, both disc so I can use them for mountain biking as well), Velocity Dyad's (36 hole), Nitto Noodle bar, Technomic stem, some oldschool Avid Tri-Align brakes, Brooks b17 special, MKS Lambda pedals. I'm still hunting for some used White Industries mountain cranks, bar-end 10 speed shifters and derailleurs. I'll share the full build once it's completed! Here are a few teasers, as well as some photos I shot for a local shop of a beautiful Mark Nobilette they built up. But your ride reports created an itch so bad I had to absolutely scratch it, fears and grief be darned. My morning coffee rides are really a thing of joy. Anyway, thank you again and keep writing those ride reports. I'll keep pedaling along... Eunice -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Betty Foy Headbadge and 5258
Here's a wild guess (and I hope Grant or someone with knowledge will chime in): Betty Foy is a character in the Wordsworth Poem *The Idiot Boy*. Poem text here: http://www.bartleby.com/145/ww137.html Lines 52 to 61: And Betty o'er and o'er has told The Boy, who is her best delight, Both what to follow, what to shun, What do, and what to leave undone, How turn to left, and how to right. And Betty's most especial charge, Was, Johnny! Johnny! mind that you [line 58] Come home again, nor stop at all,-- Come home again, whate'er befall, My Johnny, do, I pray you do. It kinda works, but I'm not happy with it ending at line 58. It seems to fit better if it were 5256 (i.e., end at How turn to left, and how to right.) or 5261. all the best, shoji On Thursday, May 1, 2014 4:32:56 PM UTC-4, Cecily Walker wrote: I'm sure someone here (Hi, Grant!) knows the meaning of the number 5258 on the Betty Foy headbadge. Re: [RBW] My first Riv and a general introduction
Welcome to Riv ownership, and welcome to the list! I noticed that your Atlantis has a dealer sticker from World of Bikes in Iowa City. Though IC's bike culture is pretty Riv-ish (like many college towns), I wouldn't call World of Bikes the most Riv-ish shop. They don't carry Atlantii any more but they do carry a couple Surly's in addition to the mainstream Al/CF bikes. These Rivs sure get around... This is the first time I've seen the new San Marcos color built up. It looks nice, and a bit less twinkly than the old pearly light blue (a gorgeous color). Plus, it has mid-blade eyelets now. One question: On the beautiful Nobilette, why did the shop use the black clamp-on downtube cable stop, instead of the cable stops built into the lower head lug? Of course, we all make style decisions but I can't understand this one. Ahhh... blush... I have been trying to ride my QB a lot more recently. Even on rides I could benefit from multiple gears on. I still shift it plenty between the 16 18 cogs, and occasionally between the 40 and 32 chainwheels, but hardly ever mess with the 22T freewheel. If I really start putting some hours on it, I could see switching to just a 16T freewheel in back, which would let me shorten up my chain by a couple links and get my rear stay theoretical at 430mm. It's all about what you can get used to! Cheers, David it isn't a contest. Just enjoy the ride. - Seth Vidal On Fri, May 2, 2014 at 4:01 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote: To paraphrase Saint Sheldon: Shifting is a pernicious habit.* Your ride description makes me want to resurrect a ss off roader. *Originally: Coasting is a pernicious habit. I rode a loop with downhill single track after a hearty 8 mile climb in poser SS mode in one of my future middle gears on the QB: 32-17. I started off just figuring I'll do my usual 10 mile connector route to Woodland Park and back, but felt great so headed up Rampart to the top of Lovell Gulch. Some good hearty standing to climb for the last couple miles. Naturally the hardest was nearest the top. Grin. Additional things I tested: -- Single track climbing. Though short, it told me that I'll easily handle what I need to with 32-22 (for long technical climbs), and most of what I'll be doing with 32-18. -- Fixed likely makes no sense on the trails, as there are just too many places that my pedals bashed in my brief testing on the downhill. -- It's stunning how quickly the legs get used to climbing in lower gears when the mind tells them this is all we've got. No doubt the weighted slo-mo rock squats I started doing a month ago help significantly as well. But Grant is right (shocker!) -- I really do shift way too much and I, at least, am far wimpier for it. So my new gearing plan is to copy David Cyclotourist's 16-18 Dos Eno and 22 non-sealed freewheel. On a more esoteric note... It was awesome! I loved it. Simpler. More like running. On a bike. Far easier to enter the contemplative. Awesome! With wild grinning anticipatory abandon, Patrick -- -- Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and letters that get interviews. Howdy, I just saved a mid-80's Trek 400 from going to the landfill. The frame isn't rideable but the components look good. I have only had it for a day so I haven't looked to closely at it but the rear derailer is a Suntour Cyclone I believe. I was going to salvage what can be salvaged and the rest will be recycled. If you are interested in the dt shifters I can go out to the garage and report back. I am guessing it is friction 6 speed? Maybe some mid- grade Suntour? Let me know if you are interested. Cheers! So many of you have mentioned carrying a chain tool in even a fairly minimalist kit. I don't want to jinx myself, but I have never needed one on the road. Re: [RBW] Re: On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?
That, or a stuck link. I had one of those on a 1000K in 2007 and I didn't have a chain tool. I limped about 10 miles to the second overnight with a skipping chain, and someone fixed it while I was sleeping. Sadly, I still hadn't learned my lesson to carry a chain tool. My solution at that time was to carry a whole extra chain around with me! Which I used the following May on a 600K, but unfortunately it didn't shift as well as the chain it replaced. Would have been a lot easier and lighter to carry a chain tool and an extra magic link/power link. But anyway :) On Fri, May 2, 2014 at 11:09 PM, Edwin W dweenda...@hotmail.com wrote: So many of you have mentioned carrying a chain tool in even a fairly minimalist kit. [RBW] Re: On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?
After speaking to some mechanics and others more knowledgeable than myself, the consensus is that my incident with a chain pin coming loose wasn't at all common. But it's a a data point. Here's another scenario, which did happen to someone in a group ride that I was part of-- her rear derailleur jammed and self-destructed. She didn't have a chain tool, but someone in the group did, and with it she removed a bunch of links and made the bike a single-speed for the rest of the ride. [RBW] Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
As an owner of both a QB and Hunq (there's the riv content), I am completely relieved that my left hip replacement went very well. Those of you who saw me on my Bike Friday at RAGBRAI 2013 will remember I had a cane with me and limped around when off the bike. I had anterior method surgery on Monday, went home on Wednesday, and today I had my first out of hospital PT session. I am doing well enough that I was allowed to get on a stationary bike just to see how I'd do. I did about five minutes pedaling around 80 RPM with no pain. They had to make me get off (though the soft saddle would have done that soon enough anyway). Luckily my PT guy knows a bit about biking so he didn't argue about setting the saddle high enough. I only had to ask him to move it up higher twice. I'm not sure how long it'll be before I'm cleared to ride a real bike but I don't think it'll be all that long (and I'm going to be learning how to walk for a while because while I've been able to ride for the last two years walking has become more and more difficult). That's it. I'll be back on the road soon. Aloha All! I've only needed a chain tool once: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/11041655663 I was able to limp home with it as pictured, but could have made the field repair if necessary.
