[RBW] FS: Ruthworks canvas front bag, panniers and seatbag
Custom Ruthworks dark green canvas with honey leather full touring set. Front bag is 10 tall and 8 1/2 deep. I did mount and remove a Berthoud decaleur. Panniers are 15 tall and 8 wide. I had Ely use Lone Peak top hooks as they have a simple locking lever. The hooks are 6 apart. Elastic bungee at bottom. Rear seat wedge is about 8 long. Ely's picture is here https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruthworkssf/15103687527/in/faves-37347002@N05/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruthworkssf/15103687527/in/faves-37347002@N05/ I set up the front bag on my bike and used it for 2 short rides. The panniers did an around the block test run so this set is basically brand new. https://www.flickr.com/photos/37347002@N05/15116575824/in/set-72157634847568447 I am switching to bikepacking style frame bags for the most part. It makes no sense to keep these beautiful bags stored in my closet. The construction and materials are top notch. Brand new this set runs over $800 and a six month plus lead-time. Re: [RBW] Re: Hunq's Slipping Seatpost
My reaction is not the same. The seatpost/seat-tube junction is not an uncommon problem area in bicycles. I've seen the problem enough to give any company the benefit of the doubt on it. Yes, they shouldn't see it as tolerable, and Waterford shouldn't repeatedly make a mistake, but I know Riv well enough that I'm not going to assume they think the problem is acceptable. Also, I've seen simple fixes to seatpost slipping. Maybe, even if warranted, it's not worth it to the customer to send the whole frame back for a replacement. In principle, the customer should get a flawless product. Despite the existence of that principle, it might still be in the better interest of the customer to get help with the quick fix, because often with the seatpost problem, the fix is lasting. It's worth considering as opposed to the personal labor and waiting time involved with frame replacement. So if Rivendell were helpful (as I've always found them to be) as they gave advice on how to prevent the slipping, that would not cause me to be disappointed in the company. -Jim W. Beautiful bags, Mike! Wow. Could you help me understand the allure of frame bags vs. traditional panniers for bike packing? The main argument I've heard is squeezing through tight spaces. I've never understood this. My panniers are not wider than my legs are on the bike, and in LCG the bike and I are even wider except when I have to be pulling from the front or pushing from behind. Not once have I had a space the panniers couldn't fit through, though my canvas bags do get rock, tree, and bush loving rather often. Perhaps less hearty nylon tends to rip more easily? Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Ruthworks canvas front bag, panniers and seatbag
I have ridden the same off-road rides with bikepacking gear and with panniers. For me, when I was pushing the bike, the rear panniers got in the way of my legs, particularly on narrow trails where I needed to get close to the bike. YMMV. The other appeal is simply simplicity. Racks can loosen up. They can break. If you don't have racks, then you don't have to worry about broken racks. Re: [RBW] Installing the Bertoud Decaleur
This is the large Berthoud HB bag, 2586. I bought it from Boulder Bicycles, who advertise a custom stiffiner. Perhaps that is what I am looking at, an Al (??) piece of flat metal on three sides of the bag. It is a little less than half the width of the leather strip. It would take a sharp bit and some patience to drill 4 holes in it and even then it looks like it would challenge the length of the 4 bolts, so I'm guessing just going through the leather, below the metal is appropriate. Re: [RBW] Installing the Bertoud Decaleur
That's strange Michael. I have a large Berthoud bag that I, too, bought from Boulder. It's just leather and cloth, like Steve said. The custom stiffener is some type of fiberboard. It's a trip-folded, three piece that goes across the bottom and up both sides and attaches to the top of the bag with velcro. Hmm. But the declarer holds just fine bolted through the leather and cloth. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Thunder Burt Wisdom...
What were you using before? Sorry, I missed that part of the conversation. I must keep those in mind for the Fargo, though I seem to be going in a more roady direction with that bike: from 37 lb and 12 psi 65 mm tires to 28 lb and skinny little 51 mm tires (tho' I just checked pressure after 19 miles of pavement and dirt and the are, F/R, 15/18.) That said, the Furious Freds are Pretty Damn' Good -- on pavement I was pushing the same gear, roughly, as on my errand road bike with Kojaks -- shifting between 64 on dirt, briefly 60 on a sandy couple of miles churned up by horses, to 68 and 72 on pavement depending on wind. The *beau ideal* would be 60 mm Furious Freds without the little central knoblets and slightly bigger knobs on the shoulders. Today's ride, discovering and re-discovering nearby roads and trails -- beside the acequia trails and roads, there are dozens of pretty little neighborhoods scattered throughout the area (essentially, I-40 in the south to a mile or so north of Alameda, and from the river to 2nd Street, w/e). I found some of both that I've not seen before, and others that I've not ridden for a long while. Basically, I followed my nose and got myself pleasantly lost, discovering that what I had thought was East (or really, ESE, the direction of the Sandias). I would almost be tempted to get one of the new Rawlands built around 559 X 50 mm tires, but I am sold on 622 fatties. IME -- and, though I've taken no measurements, I daresay my experience of 50+ years of riding is worth something -- taller tires of the same width roll better over small bumps -- washboard, say -- and sand, and that at higher pressures than 559s of the same width. That is to say that, IME, a 622X 60-65 at 20 rolls through sand and washboard like a 559 X 60 at 12/17. I suspect that more of my riding will be this sort of (sandy and choppy) dirt + pavement, given that I have scores of such beautiful miles near my house; and this tempts me (get thee behind me, Satan!) to consider a Chauncey Matthews custom in the allroud idiom, but translated into NW Albuquerque riding conditions. But enough about me! Patrick: I'll be interested to learn how the TBs perform and hold up longer term. Are you using tubes? A wee nudge toward tubeless ... Oh! My new front wheel, with very nice, bright silver, cartridge-bearing disk front hub -- Sunshine brand? $15 or so shipped eBay NEW -- and Avid 160 mm rotor, plus FF tire and sealant, as well as a Nashbar allen skewer, all on the new Velocity Blunt SS rim, weighs exactly 1,502.5 grams. I see that my story idea outran my narrative talent. I meant to say: I got pleasantly lost, and was pleasantly surprised to find myself heading North when I thought I had been riding East -- interesting how familiar landmarks (in this case a certain section of the very familiar Rio Grande recreational trail) appear so foreign when one is geographically discombobulated. Resolved: These Speedblends will become the unofficial Riv Bunch Traveling Tires. I'll pass them to Joe Bunik (by way of private message and in-person delivery) and he can then pass them along to Joe Bernard or to anyone else on this thread. How about each rider holds the tires for roughly 50 miles and/or two weeks, maximum? That way, they'll keep moving. And, yes, please post a picture of the tires wherever they go. Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Ruthworks canvas front bag, panniers and seatbag
I agree with what Anne says. While I have a strong appreciation for canvas and leather bags, the bikepacking rackless bags are lighter and IMO better engineered. I can travel further and with greater ease. I also find that my load is better balanced which on technical trails makes the ride more fun and the downhills faster. Framebags don't work as well on traditional style frames because of leg rub so on that style of bike I have a half bag that only uses the front portion of the triangle. For paved and smoother dirt roads the pannier set up is the best way to carry heavier loads. In brushy or rocky singletrack, panniers can snag on objects easier than frame mounted bags. Lately I'm doing mostly off-road touring/bikepacking and will not utilize these bags as I once thought I would. ~mike On Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 9:24:27 AM UTC-7, Anne Paulson wrote: I have ridden the same off-road rides with bikepacking gear and with panniers. On Sat, May 2, 2015 at 8:46 AM, Deacon Patrick lamon...@mac.com javascript: wrote: Beautiful bags, Mike! The knee rub of a frame bag is bothersome to me. So I've simply never grasped the preference. Any insight you can provide on what I'm missing would be great! I rode Dureme 50's for the first 2 years, Smart Sam 2.25 front/2.1 rear for the last year. Interestingly, I'd put the Smart Sams on par with the smooth ride of Clement MSO 60 TPI. I'm debating when it is time to replace the QB's tires if I go Barlow Pass or MSO 120/dual compound. Since the Burts roll so beautifully (seriously, the Hunqapillar handled much more like the QB with them on!), I'm likely more comfortable going with the Barlow Pass and stop pushing the QB into the grey zone of underbiking rougher trails. Schiller, Leven, Jawnson, Allen, to name a few, but are there really 900 mikes on the forum? :-) Sent from my iPhone On May 2, 2015, at 3:31 PM, John Hawrylak john.hawry...@verizon.net wrote: Ty what tire pressure did you use on the 900 mike trip??? I've been riding Barlow Pass on my 64cm Atlantis for as long as they've been available. Great tires. Love the ride. I've been a Jack Brown guy. Also a GB Cypres guy. I have Marathon Supremes mounted on a spare wheelset, but I just hate the ride; too dead. My normal Barlow Pass are the ELs. Best tire ever. Feels like the tire the bike was made for. Last October I rode 900 miles to San Francisco down the coast. I used Barlow Pass regular on my mechanic's recommendation. Loaded weight of bike, rider, baggage, water, etc. was 310lbs. Great ride on all kinds of roads and not a single flat! I would have kept with the Barlow just for the great ride. Now that I've experienced the reliability, I'm totally sold. [RBW] Re: Anyone in Folsom free Sunday?
Manny, Below are a few links. Assuming you'll be with your fiance I'll recommend the ride around Lake Natoma instead of Folsom Lake. Very romantic. This is probably what you have been hearing about anyway. Lake Natoma is below Folsom Lake Dam and should make for a perfect paved ride, Very scenic and relaxing. It's about a 20 mile round trip loop. Not knowing where you are picking up the tandem, I suggest you find Bicycles Plus (link below). They are located at the trail head and directly kitty-corner to free covered public parking. Karen's bakery is right next door where you can get your sweetie some sweets and there are plenty of restaurants of all ethnic persuasion in close proximity. There is also a Mexican restaurant right next door but you should inquire at Bicycle's Plus if looking for something different. Another plus is they are located in Old Town Historic Folsom. Bicycle's Plus has the appearance of an all carbon/spandex shop but I guarantee you they will treat you right. I've been commuting through this area for the past 25 years. I hope these suggestions help. If you have any more questions just ask. Thank you Mike and Anne and all. I really appreciate your experience. I'll still bikepack the dumb way as I have no issue with it.
