The crown is sweet, and I'm diggin' the brown-with-green on the ShopSack. I
just ordered the same color in a Bar Tube...

it was said that this should work well with the new black-with-white Sams,
and I agree. Of course this screws up my plan for perfect color
coordination with the black-with-white-straps Carradice I just bought, but
what am I, a freakin' *bag matcher?? *

Greetings,
I'll be there on my sliver/orange Rivendell
. My
bro's bailed out this summer so I'm soloing and planning on doing it in one
day. Plan on leaving early, getting in as many miles as possible before it
gets hot, then suffering to the finish. Hope to see a Riv or two on the
way.

PS. Mounted a new set of Compass "extra lights" on the steed tonight. I
haven't ridden them yet but man they sure look good. I bet it will be like
riding tailwinds on marshmallows all the way to P-town!

[RBW] Question about Imperial saddles

2015-07-07 Thread Lungimsam
Brooks leather saddles develop butt bone spot detents, yet the middle part
of the saddle stays at original height. Like this (This is Tony D.'s
saddle):
https://www.flickr.com/photos/70237737@N00/11608474323/in/album-72157639124322684/

Brooks Imperial saddles have a lengthwise cutout. When the butt bone
detents start breaking in, does the middle part of the saddle stay up, like
in the pic above, or does the saddle middle lower, because of the cutout?

Thanks for the info.

Re: [RBW] Rivet review?

2015-07-07 Thread Peter Adler
That's gratifying to hear. I've been riding SA-As for six years, and I'm
still a little disoriented by the Great Saddle Shortening of 2013, when the
original design dropped 25mm (330 to 305), and then lost length again in
2014 (305 to 285). I was used to that long nose; now it's sized like a
Brooks with a long cutout. In addition to giving you more repositioning
room, the longer saddle was weird-looking enough to discourage theft.

Also, I wish they'd bring back the Watershed leather in Golden. The Vintage
Tru-leather is a reasonable color match for Brooks honey and VO elkhide
macchiato, but SA-A's saddle sauce is a thoroughly inadequate water
prevention treatment. I ordered a shiny-new saddle in last December's
annual Xmas sale ($99 a saddle), sauced it up per the instructions, and
then Stormageddon hit in the Bay Area - the one big rain event we've had in
the last year. I got water blisters all over the saddle, and took it off to
dry out. It's still in my parts box, while the previous year's non-matchy
mahogany Watershed has gone back on.

I am not amused. A saddle that falls apart in the rain, when you make
another saddle that can withstand Biblical floods - that's not exactly
touring-friendly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clementine Believer

2015-07-07 Thread Clayton.sf
My 'Viut with bullmoose boscos and rock 'n road tires handled local single
track very well this past weekend. Not as well as the Jones, but not that
far off either. Was able to clean all the usual technicalities and made it
up the steepest inclines. On the road is wonderful too. I feel like it is
one of those bikes that is a lot more than what meets the eye. I can
imagine the Clementine will be similar in that aspect.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clementine Believer

2015-07-07 Thread Aaron Young
I agree with Drew - the Clementine I rode seemed a lot beefier than even
the Cheviot. I wouldn't be afraid to tour a bit on the Cheviot that I
bought for my wife. In fact, recently we loaded it up with rear panniers
(lightly loaded, to be fair), medium saddle bag, and the Wald basket up
front and went for a short overnight tour. If you balance the load right,
then for road touring it's no problem. Off road touring, on the other
hand, would require a very different bike.

When I rode the Clementine I wanted to take it on some nice rolling single
track. That seemed to me like it would be a perfect use for that bike.
Maybe it was the big knobbly tires. :)

Re: [RBW] Re: Clementine Believer

2015-07-07 Thread James Warren

The Riv spectrum certainly includes bikes not intended for centuries or full
touring. So I'd guess that trading off those things to make the Clementine
practical and fun were part of the design. I rode it yesterday; it rides really
nice. I could easily see it for afternoon fun rides that make you sweat, with
those monster tire allowances taking your on trails to help provide that sweat.
For me, that would be the fun part. In addition, I would not consider it a
century bike or a loaded touring bike.

Another way of looking at it: consider the world of practical, basic mixtes.
Now consider those bikes benefiting from Riv improvements: long chainstays,
serious tire clearance, awesome rack braze-ons and fender mounts and
well-thought-out kickstand plate and pump peg*. That's what the Clementine
seems like to me.

(*I think the Clementine has a pump peg; not 100% sure.)

[RBW] Re: Clementine Believer

they do have a beefier feel than most step thru bikes ive come in contact
with, but i agree that the innate nature of the design makes me wonder a
little. (the cable routing would bother me more though.) But then again, i
see swoop tube bikes that are like 50 years old every once in a while and
they look like they survived and have some good stories to tell. my fiance
is barely over 5ft and we ended up getting the tiny clem proto. fits like
it was made for her. luckily, she prefered the non step-thru design anyway.
no reason you couldn't go with the clem if you're not keen on the swoop and
want some more rigidity. i think they are both pretty unisexish, and the
clem feels bombproof.

For cruising, the clemintine should be fine. A few years ago, I bought my
daughter a Schwinn "step-thru" comfort bike. For cruising around, and doing
short trips, it works fine. Our schwinn looks very similar to the
clemintine without the fancy lugs. Check it out:

http://www.sears.com/schwinn-women-s-suburban-cs-26inch-comfort-bike/p-00630016000P?prdNo=11&blockNo=11&blockType=G11\

At about $250, it was actually a good deal and my daughter actually likes
it! Of course, YMMV! Good Luck!

Other impressions that have come to mind:

- I liked the cheap-o retr-o plastic grips, but I think without gloves my
hands would get sticky sweaty on long rides with them.

- I can't comment on the seat. The binder bolt broke while adjusting it for
the test ride which ended up being all-standing and shorter (duration, not
height; although at 5'8"...) than I would have liked. But the saddle looked
nice. Attached to the seat post. Lying on the ground. :/

- the IG-turned-derailer shifters worked great. Indexed, but frictiony.
Shifted just fine. No worries.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Paul Racers, Paul brake levers, TRP Levers, Various Nitto stems and handlebars!

2015-07-07 Thread Avery Wilson
Last minute price drop/ fire sale!

I'm shipping stuff out tomorrow morning, so I'm lowering the price on the
Paul Racer Centerpull brakes (center mount version) to $150 shipped! Half
price, and I'll include the Moon Unit straddle hangers FOR FREE!

Both Nitto drop bars are still available.

Decided to keep the Paul brake levers.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr. Index Shifters

2015-07-07 Thread Ron Mc
I've been told the Sunrace is the same as the Microshift (though a big
difference in the cosmetics). My daughter has been riding 9-speed index
Microshift bar ends for 3 years without a hitch. I build my upright this
winter with Microshift thumbies 9-speed index on compact double (and rarely
shift the front). I am spoiled by it.

[RBW] Re: Rivet review?

2015-07-07 Thread Ron Mc
I put 35 miles on my Rivet Indy on my go-fast last weekend. I have
actually been playing so much with my new upright, I hadn't even ridden the
bike in 5 months. So this is fresh.
Now a year and month old, I replaced a stretchy SA with the Indy. The Indy
hit its stretch limit for me in a couple of rides (which the SA never did
after 6 months and over half of the stretch bolt). The saddle is pretty
firm on your sit bones, though plenty comfortable, and is tolerant of
sliding around a bit. When you do slide forward, you feel the hammock
deflect. Delighted with it after my 35-mi ride on this application.
I like the contact, fit and especially the cooling in the s. Texas summer
heat.
Also should point out I'm a total fan of B17 Special on my other bikes.
There is one little weirdness. The "violin hole" I think has a too small
radius in the back hole, and this causes a little crown pinch at the back
edge of the hole. However, it looks more intimidating than it feels and
myrecent ride supports it.

[RBW] Re: Clementine Believer

2015-07-07 Thread Aaron Young
Other impressions that have come to mind:

- I liked the cheap-o retr-o plastic grips, but I think without gloves my
hands would get sticky sweaty on long rides with them.

- I can't comment on the seat. The binder bolt broke while adjusting it for
the test ride which ended up being all-standing and shorter (duration, not
height; although at 5'8"...) than I would have liked. But the saddle looked
nice. Attached to the seat post. Lying on the ground. :/

- the IG-turned-derailer shifters worked great. Indexed, but frictiony.
Shifted just fine. No worries.

Re: [RBW] Rivet review?

2015-07-07 Thread iamkeith
Well, good news - now that I've muddled up this Rivet thread:

I finally spoke with Selle Anatomica. Turns out I wasn't the only one
frustrated, and they now offer a base with longer rails. It isn't listed,
and it isn't standard, but at least its available. Also, Carol - Tom's
sister - is still running the company and handling customer service.

I'd still appreciate hearing more reviews of the rivet, from anyone with
experience to compare to the SA.

[RBW] WTT - New Selle Anatomica for older

2015-07-07 Thread iamkeith
I have a brand new and un-used Selle Anatomica saddle that I'd like to
trade for a slightly older one in very good or equally un-used condition.
Mine is black watershed leather, with black rivets. I'll consider any
color other than mahogany, but would much prefer the same black or perhaps
antique natural leather.

Important note: If you like a lot of offset and tend to adjust your saddle
far toward the back, this would be a good deal for you. The new design
allows a slight bit more adjustability in that direction, and also has
stronger rails to help prevent bending when used this way. If, however,
you need to slide it more toward the front as I do, then this trade isn't
for you. The new design severely limits adjustability in that
direction. I just posted some photos in this thread that will help
you identify the differences if you're unsure:

Re: [RBW] Rivet review?

2015-07-07 Thread iamkeith

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Very helpful.

It does look like the Rivet rails offer a similar adjustment range to the
old SA. I wasn't aware of the try-before-you-buy program, so that sounds
like the thing to do if I decide to go that way.

For the benefit of anyone else looking at this thread, that SA in Kieran's
photo is "new" as in not used - but it's the "old" design, with the longer
rails. Attached are some side-by-side photos of the old and even newer
(re-designed) versions. Taking a page out of Coca Cola's playbook, the
new and improved one now offers about 1/8" to 1/4" more rearward
adjustment, but reduces the forward adjustment range (and bag support
clamping real estate) by about 1 1/2". Such a shame.

[RBW] Not all that glitters is gold...

2015-07-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
And so the beautiful summer of San Francisco is upon us...
Meaning foggy, cold and wet. PERect time to go on an overnight in the
headlands.

Good buddies Tony and Bridgette make their way up from the Peninsula to do
a quick easy overnight with thoughts of epic shred session afterwords. With
pedicab rival Aaron joining in for the adventure.

Burritos are a go. Gear is dialed. Everyone is fresh.

We roll through the quite streets of Fisherman's Wharf to be greeted by
Karl the Fog as we cross the bridge into our adventures.

First single track down... disaster strikes.
Tony with the strength of his umm legs. Bends his saddle rails and pops
his saddle bolt off. Luckily he finds it in the dark and takes the time to
screw the bolt on.

He hops back on and the bolt's last threads give and the tiny but ever
important bolt pings into oblivion darkness never to be found again.
Stuck now we sit around in the dark trying to figure out ways of making
this work. Good thing Tony brought some extra paracord.

A couple of knots later and the saddle is ridable. Kinda. With minor
adjusting every 2 miles. We crawl our way to camp.
Just to find it drenched. With the fog make it rain feel like rain light
conditions.

With Aaron in his tent, Tony and Bridgette wrapped in a burrito tarp. There
was talks about a knife fight for Aaron's tent that never come into
fruition.

We wake up wet but take the our time. Sleeping in until the sun came out.

And for one rare morning in San Francisco it actually did. We sat and
chilled waiting for our stuff to dry.

We figured with Tony's saddle and with Bridgette nursing a previous back
injury we would cancel the day long shred fest for another time. Aaron goes
on ahead while we cruise and take our time come back home.

It was the great quotes of Mike Williams that really changed my perspective
on how adventures SHOULD go. And I'm never too sad about missing any
opportunity to go riding hard.
While having epic adventures is great. Just spending some time with good
friends and being able to leave with some stories to tell are just as good.

Always remember good friends, "The trails will always be there. For next
time."

Pictures proved that for this overnight Karl the Fog wins:

Re: [RBW] San Marcos vs ES

2015-07-07 Thread Tim Gavin
I bought a 51 San Marcos for my girlfriend, and she loves it.

The ES and San Marcos are functionally similar. They're both steel, and
have sport-touring geometry.

But, there are several important differences:
SM frame is lugged Prestige (really nice Riv lugs), ES is welded Prestige
(main triangle) Cro-mo rear end.
SM frame has the double top tube in your size.
SM top tube(s) are sloped more than the ES
SM has more frame reach and stack, so the front end is longer and taller
SM has 10 cm longer chainstays and 1 degree slacker head tube, so probably
a tad more stable handling than the ES
SM fork has mid-fork braze-on mounts for a front rack
SM has a pump peg and a kickstand plate

Clearance:
SM uses long-reach brakes (55-75 mm), the ES uses mid-reach (45-55 mm).
So, even though they are listed as having roughly the same tire clearance,
the SM will have more room for fenders. By my reading the ES says 32c plus
fenders, and the SM says 35c plus fenders. I fit 38b plus SKS P45's on my
girlfriend's 650b 51 cm SM.

It's up to you if those differences are important, and if so, if they're
worth $125.

In your situation, I'd pick the San Marcos over the ES any day. The only
reason I'd pick the ES is if the 63 cm SM is too small and you'd need the
64 cm ES.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr. Index Shifters

2015-07-07 Thread Surlyprof
Welcome, Doug. I used the Sunrace Thumb Shifters for a while with a set of
Bosco bars. They worked great. The only reason I stopped using them is
that I prefer bar ends with an Albastache set up. I don't remember any
correlation between the click of the shifter and the actual shift of the
derailleur. I also don't remember that bothering me at all. It shifts
when it shifts and, as long as I had the derailleur dialed in, it shifted
well. The one thing I have noticed now that I am back to using Silver
friction shifters, I don't remember ever encountering ghost shifting with
the Sunrace as I sometimes do on the Silver friction shifters when the
d-ring gets loose. The only thing I can assume (pure assumption, mind you)
is that the ratchet mechanism in the Sunrace shifters helped keep it from
ghost shifting. I'm sure it could happen with the Sunrace if it got loose
but I never encountered that problem.

The build of the Sunrace appears a little plastic-y but they were sturdy
and worked really well. Surprisingly well considering an $18 price point
(still!). I suppose that is why Rivendell has continued carrying them and
is spec'ing them on the Clem.

John

PS: I also test rode the Clem and it is a smooth and agile ride. If I had
the money and the space, the 52cm Clem would likely be my N+1

Thanks, Aaron.

One of the pictures,

https://www.flickr.com/photos/sk8_or_die/19449664091/in/album-72157655573779841/

shows the bike's seat lying on the ground. I was at Rivendell WC yesterday, and
I got to ride the Clementine with that seat attached. It's really excellent.
The brand is Velo; the look is plain and good, and the handle it has off the
back is nice for two reasons: as a handle as intended or as a place for
saddlebag attaching. It's wide to optimize the Bosco bar setup, but you don't
have to spring (!) for the price of a B67. I liked how the inexpensive Velo
seat felt while riding on it. I kind of want to get one separately.

[RBW] San Marcos vs ES

2015-07-07 Thread a3inverter
Greetings all,

I've been interested in the San Marcos (in 63cm) for a year or so now and a
combination of some aggressive pricing and available fundage has me very
close to buying one, however, would like to hear from the bunch regarding
any comparisons to the Soma ES. The ES is a bit cheaper ($125) and might
fit slightly bigger tires.

My priorities are:
A comfortable, well-fitting ride - 94cm PBH here and the 25.5in steel Treks
that I ride today (460,560,400) have plenty of Technomic showing to get to
level saddle and bars
Room for bigger tires - Room for 38c should do. I had 29x2's on my 62cm
LHT and while the tires could handle anything, the geometry really didn't
work for the rough stuff.
Light-ish - While the LHT did fit, it felt dead and heavy.

Interested in your feedback...Thanks!

I have a set. They are on my bike at the moment, but I've been thinking
about switching to bosco bars..

so, I cut about an inch off of each end. otherwise they are great. Is
that a deal breaker?

If you are still interested let me know, make me an offer?

Where are you located? I'm in SF.

[RBW] Re: Cambium bartape.

2015-07-07 Thread Arthur Mayfield
According to Brooks, it's been given the same water resistant treatment as
the saddles, so shouldn't need shellac. I tried it early on, in the natural
color. I found it to be exceedingly stiff and hard to wrap. It has no
stretch at all, so edges tend to stand proud of the layer underneath. It's
also not a bit "cush," and its stiffness makes it difficult to wrap over
any cushioning material. I soon took it off and re-installed my stitched
elk hide covers over inner tube underwraps, which I love—Doubt I'll stray
again!

[RBW] Re: I can't get the shifting dialed in

2015-07-07 Thread Arthur Mayfield
One thought... Are you sure the little black plastic Dia Compe washer under
the D ring is mounted correctly (notch in slot)? It's really easy for it to
slip out when installing the shifter and trying to hold all the pieces in
place while screwing the bolt in. If the washer isn't in right, the shifter
will act up, ghost shift, loosen, and generally be a PITA.

Excellent point: just because my Ram could, doesn't mean they all could...
that rear brake bridge's location matters, can make it happen, or not
happen.

I like my 42 650b tires on my Ram; when I was running it as 700c, the
largest I ever ran was a 32, which was fine, but I like the 42s better.
If I needed to go back to 700c for some reason I would probably go up to
35's, but then have to remove the fenders...

If I was a hundred pounds lighter, I might not have as much of a preference
for the 42's over the 32's, either

Lots of things to consider

[RBW] Clementine Believer

2015-07-07 Thread Aaron Young
Hey Gang,

I stopped by Rivelo in Portland for the first time recently. What a great
shop with all the bike and camping gear, hatchets, and a entire wall of Bob
Dylan albums for sale.

It took a minute before I noticed but sitting right next to an orange
Cheviot was an orange Clementine. Or maybe it's a clementine Clementine???

Shop owner John (nice to meet you!) let me ride the Clementine for a bit.
It was set up with Bosco bars and fat knobby tires. It was great! The
Hunqa fork goes a long way to making this bike look super tough.

I admit that based only on internet pics and reading about the
Clem/Clementine I was not very impressed. But it was a whole different
story to see it in person and ride it, and now I'm a believer. Even the
Clementine with the swooping tubes had a rough/tough/beefy look to it. Not
"girly" at all (hey, I like "girly"). I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the
Clementine to anyone especially for the price. Heck, now I'm itching to
add one to my band of bicycles. I'm pretty sure I would even go with a
Clementine over the Clem because of the drop tube.

Here's a few pics from my short shop visit:

FYI - I've covered this in other threads on the topic, but the long reach
Tektros would not reach a 650b A23 rim on my orange Ram. The front was fine
but the rear wasn't, even if I had filed the slots.

I was forced to go with DC 750s (and I ultimately switched back to 700c as
I preferred the bike that way).

[RBW] Re: PSA eBay Riv frame

2015-07-07 Thread Johnny Alien
I am not sure I understand the logic. When there is a double bid from one
person it is almost always to increase their max bid and it does not raise
their initial bid. I honestly can't think of another reason to do it.
Anyone that wants that frame will either bid until they get the highest or
put their absolute highest amount in at the last second aka sniping. In
either scenario the first bidder bidding twice does not change anything but
the max amount they are willing to go. I think the best way is to just bid
at the end but others feel differently. But tipping the hand means nothing
to people that bid at the end. They will just enter their max amount and
snipe it.

[RBW] Re: Cambium bartape.

No shellac really required, but took a bit to get it on right as the tape
is pretty stiff. Tape is also pretty thin so I would tape a layer of cotton
taper before wrapping the cambium tape.

Looks like a Road (pre "Road Standard") from 1995. Note the lack of

Henry James crown, while some others have a bi-plane up top. It's a great
