[RBW] Re: Childrens' bikes

2015-08-31 Thread Philip Williamson
I had great fun with a Redline "Junior" BMX race bike for my kid, and sold
it for half what I paid for it. If I'd bought it used, I would have
probably spent net zero for a few years of use. Light. Fast. Actually
raceable if your child can handle the noise and testosterone of BMX tracks
(mine could not - didn't care about winning, hated the gate noise, thought
the other dads were dicks).

[RBW] FS: Tubus Tara Front Rack plus mid-fork eyelts

2015-08-31 Thread dstein
I bought these July, mounted them for 2 overnighters, and took them off.
They have a few scratches from me trying to mount them. But otherwise are
structurally sound and very new. I have the hook attachment for the bottom,
as well as the mid-fork eyelets mount (that is still in the package).

I bought these from Bike Bag Shop for 120 (rack), 24 (eyelet) and 8 (hook).
I'll ship the rack for $90 w/ the hooks, $105 w/ the eyelets.

This is the black rack

   - Tubus Tara Front Rack

   - Tubus Mid-Fork Eyelets for Tara and Ergo

Paul thanks for sharing!

About 3 years ago my wife and I stumbled onto the High Bridge trail for a
day trip very early in my 'discovery' of biking.

We found the 'rolling hills' on the surrounding roads to be a bit
aggressive for our skills on that day and were happy to find the rail trail
and the dramatic bridge crossing.

Some of your flickr pictures hint at it but I'd love to see a google map or

I've got a version of this bag myself and love it. I even crammed a laptop
in it on occasion before I rigged up my Saddlesack Medium as the regular
commuting bag. But for anything other than commuting I've found it to be a
great single bag to take for a long day on the bike where I don't want to
be stingy about what I pack.

There was a thread last week about carrying a dslr camera... this bag does
the job fine for me w/ my D600 plus a lens or two plus some padding. The
side pockets make it easy to keep my tools out of the way of the in-and-out
luggage.

Looks classy to!

Three words I was not expecting to read tonight... :) Almost makes me want
to order a GB hatchet right now!

I admire the craftsmanship of the hatchet's Riv sells, and the simplicity

I'd definitely agree there is a fairly tenuous link between hatchet use and

Plus one on the thunder burt recommendation. Love em. Replaced compass babyshoe
pass on my elephant NFE and the difference in speed is hardly noticeable, but
the improvement in comfort over bumps is distinct. Compared with compass at
least I've found them to be quite long wearing all the things considered. All
that being said once these wear out I may make the change to compass switchback
hills. Doing my best not to buy new bike things unless it's replacing something
that's worn out.

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
Thanks Manny. I owe my life to Paul's and that is my default position, but
the Rodriguez design is very interesting and their overall comparison of V
brakes, disk brakes, and cantis rings true for me. Except for the part
about ease of setup. I have found some cantis really easy and some to be
nightmarishly difficult. I suppose if you work in a shop you get past
that. I'll need to ponder this.

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread Michael Hechmer
Mark, I'm disinclined to dispute someones personal experience, but yours
doesn't match mine. I wonder if your experience comes from set up. The
neos want a hi straddle cable and the touring a very low one. This makes
sense to me from my, admittedly limited, knowledge of Newtonian Physics. I
have never used the touring cantis but have had a pair of neos on a pair of
singles for many years. They can easily lift my rear wheel off the ground
and stop my bike in short order.

In addition the Paul's site says this about the neos:

These are very powerful brakes and have a tendency to over power thin tubed
frames (in any material). For none- too-stout frames and forks we
recommend our Touring Canti .

And this about the touring canti:

The Touring Canti is a powerful cantilever brake with a similar design to
the Neo-Retro , but with
the arms angled upward. This gives the brake a much narrower profile
without significantly reducing stopping power.

I'm 71, and together the tandem team is 140, so we are not thrill seekers.
We ride the hills of Vt unloaded quite successfully with theRacers on our
tandem and tour in gentler terrain with the tandem fully loaded. I'm
looking for increased tire clearance w/out any loss of power.

Peace,
Michael

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread Julian
Interesting. I've heard good things about Paul cantilevers, but is there
something about the Paul cantilever designs that is problematic for tandem
use, or are you saying you feel cantilevers in general are not tandem
suitable?

I run cantilevers (vintage Suntour XC Pros) on a custom 650b Bilenky tandem
and have great stopping power -- we're a big team (I'm 6'7, 240 lbs, my
stoker is small, 5'3", 110 lbs) but have no issues with those in normal
use. We do have a drum brake we add for loaded self-supported tent-camping
touring with a trailer, but cantilevers alone are fine when unloaded -- not
only here in flat IL, but in trips in Western PA and in CO.

Here's another option (Canti's) from Rodriguez Cycles:
http://www.rodbikes.com/articles/bigsqueeze.html Seem to have lots of
fender clearance and perhaps allow use of your current levers. We've not
tried them thus can not provide any opinion on their effectiveness.

Our non-Riv-type tandem runs BB7 disc brakes, they're great. Do have the
Moto Lites that we briefly used on the tandem's OE wheels while we were
sorting out rim failures with the disc brake wheels. The Moto's performed
quite well while they were on; wet or dry conditions. Much better than the
(Tektro?) OE V-Brakes the bike came with. Must say though, we don't run
fenders or do any loaded touring. YMMV

Thanks for the advice, y'all.
I guess I'll have to tension, proofhide and see what happens. maybe lace if
need to.

@Michael: That is an interesting idea. Thudbuster. Then I could just get a
slotted cambium and not have to worry about having to only get a sprung
saddle. Plus the Cambium removes the wetness damage issue. I'll keep the
thudbuster option in mind.

of degraded braking in the pouring rain of the past event, so I took the
commuter. It seemed like a good plan for an hour or so, benign for a few
hours after that and not the right choice for the last hour.

I realized too late that I was not spending adequate effort documenting by
pictures, my efforts were being concentrated on pedaling. I did spend a lot
of time with riders who've never ridden the places, distances or hills
which we were. I was surprised by the determination displayed by the many
part time riders.

Route:
http://pedalpgh.org/the-ride/pj-dick-trumbull-and-lindy-paving-metric-century/

Since I was riding my commuter had adequate supplies for my own support (in
event of worst case weather) and helped a rider with a flat who had no tube
patch or pump. He marveled at my frame pump (that's twice in two weeks!)
exclaiming "what's that?" I handed off a couple Clif Bars and water bottles
to a couple who were near bonking a few hundred yards short of a hill top
and a downhill to a rest stop.

The upside of my bike choice was that it really goes downhill and handled
with no fear on the 700 x 38c Marathons. It helped that the route seemed to
tie together many legs of rides our little Tuesday evening group takes so
each piece was very familiar territory.

Next time I'll err toward the Ram. The difference in fatigue between a bike
that planes and one that doesn't was very evident, the Disc Trucker took it
out of me with its lack of suppleness, without a doubt. I can say I had
fatigue in my knees and thighs that I don't have after long rides on the
Rambouillet.

One interesting interaction was as I came up a steep approach to a red
stoplight at a junction with a road where we were to turn left and one of
the self-congradualatory group commented that the sensor wasn't tripping
because all of them were on carbon fiber bikes. Probably just timed light
but once green I just rode around them and uphill for the next mile, never
to be seen again. Some thoughts are better left unsaid.

A more leisurely time planned for the next, more pictures on route. Here's
what I've got: https://goo.gl/photos/nxTr2hwvsbUNfF13A

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Interesting thread to me! I've got a Burley canti-braked tandem and a pair
of Moto-Lite brakes I've been considering trying. Actually the wait has
been getting the 700C from 27" wheel conversion, 38mm tire install and
fender install complete to make sure I retain enough clearance...

I'm only missing the fender install but they are in the garage now to so
I'm about out of excuses... I'll need to re-run cable housing/replace the
cable housing of course which is a pain and I'll need to get some
appropriate levers. I'll try to move it up on the priority list so I can
give you some feedback Michael!

Re: [RBW] XT Hub Issues

2015-08-31 Thread Jim Bronson
Wow that's terrible. Sorry to hear of it. That could be really dangerous
going downhill fast. your derailer could be wrapped around the cassette in
a hurry.

I have one of those XT-780 hubs also, and it has been rock solid, go figure
I've done about 12,000Ks of rando rides on it in the last 3 years. Now
I'm worried, but maybe it's one of those things if it doesn't break right
off the bat, it's good for a long time. I hope so.

Another thing I have heard about these hubs is that the axle is aluminum
and the threads tend to strip when you try to break it down to grease the
bearings. I have not actually tried this, but it's probably overdue for a
service so we'll see what happens.

A brown "mystery bike" is my commuting bike. For me, the 50mm tires make it
wonderful, the long stays make it different, and the curvy tentacles make it
(nearly) unique. Based on my own saddle time on Sam and the long one, the
fat-tired Sam called an Appaloosa prototype, the one that started this thread,
seems great. Every non-racing bike should fit fatties fine (oops).

Re: [RBW] XT Hub Issues

2015-08-31 Thread Tim Gavin
I had a bum freehub on my HB-T780. On mine, the pawls would sometimes fail
to engage, meaning it freewheeled in BOTH directions.

I ordered mine from a site in Germany as part of an XT dynamo wheelset.
Since return of the whole wheelset was impractical, I removed the freehub*
and returned only that. They gave me in-store credit for a new freehub,
which worked for me since I was going to place another order anyway.

*removal of the freehub on the T780 (and new M785) hub requires a 14 mm
hex, not the previously-Shimano-standard 10 mm hex. It's because of the
oversize axle, I believe.
My shop didn't have the proper tool yet, so I found an external 14 mm
socket from a local motor supply shop; apparently it's a somewhat common
oil drain plug size.

instead.

Here is the product page from Paul Components for extra info.

They work great, BTW. If you have a problem with not enough braking power
and your bike has canti posts, these brakes will solve it.

$175 for the pair and I'll ship them to you if you live in the continental
United States. I can take paypal, credit card, evenor personal
check/money order with a short wait to ship to make sure everything clears.
(sorry about that)

If you need pictures I can take some tonight and send them to you; please
just ask.

If the Moto-lites are out due to levers and not wanting to use a travel

have it's wire there. The Mini-Moto will definitely open wider than the

Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: Sample Appaloosa is pretty sweet

2015-08-31 Thread Bill Lindsay
Mystery bikes, or "tentacular long bikes". Rosco Bubbe and Bosco Rubbe
also were placeholders for possible bike names. Remember that BMX-ish bike
with a fork crown that was on the Blug, or was it the knot-hole. They
referred to it as Rosco Bubbe. Looking back on that, that was most likely
not an actual prototype BMX or kids' bike. It was more likely a prototype
merely to enable Riv to evaluate the joining-work of their vendor on a bike
that was part-tigged and partly lugged. If all you need to see are a bunch
of joints, and if you prefer to see them in a completed frame of some kind,
then I suppose it makes sense that it be little.

They've liked the name "Appaloosa" for a long while, and have several bike
concepts in the pipeline. They fully developed the appaloosa name, by getting
a badge made and presumably all the other decal work. So they are going to use
that name, no matter what, on some bike. Which bike gets that name has changed
over time. That LONG BIKE is a bike in the pipeline, that maybe will
eventually get made. That LONG BIKE just won't have the name Appaloosa, even
though there have been LONG BIKE prototypes that have been called Appaloosa,
and some that even have the Appaloosa badge.

[RBW] Re: TALES FROM THE TRAIL

2015-08-31 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jon - I ride the Highline quite a bit as well as Lee Gulch and like you, I
am shocked if anyone ever recognized the bike. It's happened twice, and
both times on the AHH I had.

The usual comments / questions are more like, nice vintage, how old is it,
is that a Raleigh...I even had one guy vigorously try to convince me he had
a Rivendell in the 70s.

We totally need to hook up for a ramble and or coffeeoutside sometime. I
often ride down the highline down past South Suburban and make coffee along
the creek. I've been wanting to get back down to do the loops at Greenland
Open Space too.

[RBW] Re: TALES FROM THE TRAIL

2015-08-31 Thread Zach Duval
I had the fairly surreal experience of seeing my first (and only) Riv in
the wild (an AHH) just after placing the order for my Sam frameset. It was
even my size, but alas I was working and unable to take him up on his offer
of letting me test-ride.

Other than folks in the know at shops, my Riv has been recognized once, by
a gentleman who rode an an old Raleigh Competition he'd scored on Ebay (I
was told). After we passed going opposite directions along the street, he
chased me down, expressed his admiration, and mentioned the time he met
Grant in Walnut Creek (this was in Billings, MT).

Once a tire goes into the 60$+ range, it starts to hurt.

I will say that Compass has been very fair, even dropping their prices as the

[RBW] Re: Almost OT, Mini Moto vs Neo Retro

2015-08-31 Thread Mark Reimer
No way Neo Retro's on a tandem in my opinion. I have the neo-retros on my
CX bike and the touring canit's on my Atlantis. The touring canti's have
substantially more stopping power than the neo retros. However, they still
aren't anywhere near what I'd consider safe when descending a steep
hill/mountain with a heavy load, particularly in the rain.

Mini motos would have tons more stopping power than the canti's, but fender
clearance would be the bit challenge as the cable is quite low. As was
mentioned, the moto-lite's would ensure you can use basically any tire you
want (with a fender) and have the most stopping power of any Paul brake.
Just need to have a long-pull brake lever.

Mini-Motos have excellent stopping power, are easy to set up and look very

Re: [RBW] Re: How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.

2015-08-31 Thread Tim Gavin
In addition to adding tension to the nose bolt, lacing the bottom flaps of
the saddle may also help encourage the top back into form.

I used a Flyer on my Riv for the last couple years. It was my first
Brooks, and I applied a light application of neatsfoot oil when I got it,
to help it soften more quickly. My mistake! The neatsfoot accelerated the
stretch too much (I haven't done that again).

I tensioned the nose bolt and laced the bottom flaps, and now it's more
rideable. I moved it to my fat bike, where I really appreciate the
springs, and I replaced it with a Flyer Special on my Riv.

2015-08-31 Thread Ron Mc
joe and Zach both have nailed the question. Even in the Select and Special
grades, the quality of leather has gone down, but these are the minimum
grades to consider. In the lower grades, the odds are against you getting
a good saddle. Tension the saddle - return it to that break-in feeling -
IMO, you can damage the leather if you don't tension it. A little bit can
go a long way, but tension it in 90-degree increments as Brooks recommends
and let it settle into its new stretch before you change it again.
