[RBW] Re: Need your advice on headsets

2016-05-17 Thread ascpgh
I'm usually in the camp of face and mill the head tube for a headset camp,
but I also still have the original Ultegra PJW refers to in my orange
Rambouillet, not even close to having any measure of wear. If I had a CK
sitting in my tool chest waiting this might be different.

2016-05-17 Thread Sean on Bike
Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm honored that Peter White chimed in and
learned a lot from his comment. I asked my bike shop to order me a Velo
Orange Grand Cru based on several good reviews. I'm looking forward to the
upgrade from the generic one it replaces. As Michael suggested, the one
good thing about repairs is the opportunity to upgrade.

Wish you all well,

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-17 Thread Bob B
Hey Bill

Yea I get a little flex on my Bosco/tallux setup. Honestly I just put the
tallux on; prior to that i had the Boscos on the stem that was original to
the bike (It's a Bridgestone t700 by the way, not a Trek). I actually don't
mind the flex so far, but I haven't really put it to test yet. So far the
flex makes it more comfortable. Getting a little off-topic here, but I do
know from experience that you have to tighten the stem a ridiculous amount
with the Boscos so they don't slip. I always think I'm about to strip the
stem. There aren't any scores on the stem clamp area like many other bars
have. Do people ever knurl them?

[RBW] Seeking advice: How to clean bartape off my Albatross bars

2016-05-17 Thread Rob H.
I've had this beat up set of Alba bars for a while, don't quite remember if
they're the CrMo or Aluminum bars. At any rate, I've got tape on it from
levers all the way to the center clamp. Now I've decided to put them on a
new Clementine and want to change out the stem.

Any pointers on how to clean off all the bar tape gunk that will be there?

Thanks! For this ride, I used a Garmin VIRB camera mounted on the handlebars.
For some of the shots, I handheld the camera.

I use iMovie on my Mac to assemble the footage. Might upgrade to Final Cut one

[RBW] Re: Long/scenic day rides to do from the New York City area

2016-05-17 Thread KTY
Bob, thanks for sharing these. Are you familiar with the Riding the
Catskills blog? It's not being updated anymore, but there's a great archive
or rides on there. Many can be accomplished by going up on MetroNorth and
crossing over the river. It would be a long day, but totally doable. Or
better yet, take a shelter and make an overnight of it. The one thing about
the Catskills is that cell reception is very spotty, and the roads are
quite confusing. So, take a good map or even a GPS. There's so so much good
riding up there.

Westchester is also great to explore, also off the Metro-North or by riding
up from the city.

Have fun,
Kolby

Re: [RBW] Let's see your sage Sams

2016-05-17 Thread Marc40a
Interesting, Jeff. I just made the switch from Barlow Pass (great tires,
BTW) to 45mm Smart Sams (no fenders).

If my back rim, my rack, rear brakes and the planets are in perfect
alignment, I can squeeze them in without any rubbing - barely. My first
ride was this past weekend on an incredibly gnarly but equally beautiful
hill near my house. It was amazing.

Was it the just the fear of misalignment or an actual misalignment that
caused you to switch?

My current thought is that I'll pack a smaller diameter folding tire in my
bag for extended trips, just in case.

Best,
Marc

I sold one almost exactly with the same specs and condition a couple of years
ago for somewhere between $1400-$1500. I remember there was a buyer but only
mild other interest from the list.

The list in my experience is very efficient at pricing. Price it to low you
get a lot of interest and it sells fast. Price it too high and it languishes.
Price it right and 1-2 people will speak up for it.

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread Scott McLain
I really appreciate Grant sharing his thoughts on various subjects.

To me, suggesting that Riv should put disc brakes on a bike is very similar
to asking them to add a suspension fork to a Hunq.

Riv bikes strike me as more of an atisan created bicycle that has been
refined through many years of trial and error. As opposed to design
through computer aided engineering techniques. I very seriously doubt that
Grant has engaged an engineer to do a finite element analysis model for one
of his bikes.

If you want a steel bike with disc brakes there are plenty of them
available. If you want a lugged steel frame with canti's and a quill stem,
there are very few options.

It is not a question of one right answer, but more about do what you like.
 I like canti's and side pull's.

Two things I don't like about discs: I end up hauling a lot of bikes
around and frequently taking off front wheels. I think it is much easier
to take off a front wheel on a QR canti bike than a disc thru axle and I
have to pry the pads apart if I bump the brake lever while the wheel is
out. And it is going to get harder to find nice wheels for rim brakes in
the future because the rim manufacturers as discs become more prevalent.

Best,
Scott

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread RJM
Rim brakes are fine for road biking and fine for a touring bike where
speeds aren't getting too fast. I can see the allure to disc brake equipped
touring bikes though since the weight is higher and the possibility of over
cooking a rim on a mountain descent is real.

However

There is absolutely no way I'm going back to rim brakes on mountain bikes
thoughand hydraulics are so much better than cable in that arena. Here
is the thing, hydraulic disc brakes are super simple to work on and aren't
a black box, no more so than cable actuated brakes. The feel of disc brakes
when ripping down a trail is loads better than rim brakes, and that
includes v-brakes which are strong, powerful brakes. The ease at which I
can scrub speed on my Trek Fuel which uses Shimano XT hydraulic disc is so
awesome and needed, because I really don't think I could be riding the way
I do down the trail with a rim brake.

Two problems exist with rim braking on a mountain bike, IMHO...mud and
grime getting all over the brake track which seems to happen on every ride,
and the lever feel stays the same with disc, which doesn't with rim
braking. I'm not describing that correctly though; what I mean is that rim
braking doesn't seem consistent in the muddy world of mountain biking,
compared to hydraulic disc.

I took my very nice 1996 26" wheeled specialized stumpjumper with canti's
out on the trail not too long ago just to see how it rode and play around.
The one thing I took from that ride is that rim brakes on mountain bikes
suck compared to a disc brake setup. No contest.

Setting up and servicing hydraulic disc brakes like Shimano's XTs is an
easier process than setting up canti brakes, especially premier brakes like
Pauls, which I find are a pain in the butt to work on. Seriously, they
aren't difficult at all.

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread Patrick Moore
I think a disc equipped Hunq or Atlantis would be wonderful.

Can't you find bolt-on brackets for rear disk calipers? If so, wouldn't the
easy way to do this be to offer a choice of rim brake or disk brake forks?

Why does everyone spell it "disc" instead of "disk"?

"Why does everyone spell it "disc" instead of "disk"?"

They spell it that way because that's the way it is spelled. Generally if
you choose to spell it 'disk', everyone will know what you are talking
about. Only the uptight jerks will correct you, or claim that they don't
know what you are talking about. Kind of like derailer and derailleur.

Well, this has been enlightening.

It was a pretty good blug post. I like the non-technical part: "This is
just a BLUG, not a stone tablet."

Many of these posts have been pretty thoughtful, and I enjoyed the
discussion. Of my 30-odd bikes, none are disk-, I mean disc-braked. So, I
think I'll have one built and see if i like it.

on that note, I'm going for a ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread RJM
I've had disc brakes on 4 bikes now, two cable actuated and two hydraulic.
Honestly, I think hydros are so much better and not that much more
difficult to setup compared to cable pull. I'd honestly rather use hydros
because they are easier to pull (1 finger braking), more powerful, and have
consistent feel and I felt that the cable actuated brakes lacked that
performance. TRP does have a brake that has all the hydros in the caliper,
but I've never used them. Bleeding brakes isn't difficult at all, but I may
be approaching this from a different place because in a past life I was an
automotive mechanic where bleeding brakes is normal. I don't find it weird
or difficult at all to setup a hydraulic braking system on a bike.

I find cantis to be a regular pain in the butt to setup and adjust, and was
always a little befuddled why people liked them over V-brakes, which I find
much easier to set and forget.

 However

There is absolutely no way I'm going back to rim brakes on mountain
bikes thoughand hydraulics are so much better than cable in that
 arena.
Here is the thing, hydraulic disc brakes are super simple to work on and
aren't a black box, no more so than cable actuated brakes. The feel of
 disc
brakes when ripping down a trail is loads better than rim brakes, and that
includes v-brakes which are strong, powerful brakes. The ease at which I
can scrub speed on my Trek Fuel which uses Shimano XT hydraulic disc is so
awesome and needed, because I really don't think I could be riding the way
I do down the trail with a rim brake.

Two problems exist with rim braking on a mountain bike, IMHO...mud and
grime getting all over the brake track which seems to happen on every
 ride,
and the lever feel stays the same with disc, which doesn't with rim
braking. I'm not describing that correctly though; what I mean is that rim
braking doesn't seem consistent in the muddy world of mountain biking,
 compared to hydraulic disc.

I took my very nice 1996 26" wheeled specialized stumpjumper with
canti's out on the trail not too long ago just to see how it rode and play
around. The one thing I took from that ride is that rim brakes on mountain
bikes suck compared to a disc brake setup. No contest.

Setting up and servicing hydraulic disc brakes like Shimano's XTs is an
easier process than setting up canti brakes, especially premier brakes
 like
Pauls, which I find are a pain in the butt to work on. Seriously, they
 aren't difficult at all.

[RBW] FS: 1980s project road bike. Nishiki Tri-A $150

2016-05-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/albums/72157668403003915

For Sale is a 1985 Nishiki Tri A road bike. 55cm c-to-t ST. 55.5 c-to-c
TT. Almost complete original Shimano 600 SIS group. All that is missing
is a Shimano-compatible 6 speed freewheel, and I tossed the worn out BB,
and replaced it with a Ritchey sealed BB. Plenty of paint beausage, but it
would make a tough bike to live.

It's a project road bike. You'll have to hang cables, supply a chain and
FW, and buy an appropriate seat bolt. $150 + shipping. Proceeds go to El
Cerrito High School Mountain Bike Racing. If you want to call your payment
a donation, I can even give you a tax id number so you can write it off.

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread Mark Reimer
Speaking as someone who loves disc brakes and really wants a disc Riv, I
wouldn't modify an existing Riv to take disc brakes. They were never
designed for them.

What I would love to see is a Riv model that is LIKE a Hunq or Atlantis,
but designed from the ground up for discs. Not just disc tabs slapped on
and braced up the wazoo where required. There's been much talk in this
thread already about the special frame bracing required to handle the
stress of discs. That's not inherently a problem, but does need to be
designed into the frame.

Given the stoutness of the frames, you probably COULD do this to the frame,
but I'd have serious doubts about the fork. If memory serves me correctly,
most disc conversions I've seen have a new fork, with a rear disc tab/brace
added to the frame.

[RBW] Let's see your sage Sams

2016-05-17 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I tried squeezing the Rock n' Roads under my original longboard fenders,
and I didn't have enough vertical clearance at the fork crown and front
brake. Around the same time I had seen a blug post where they had cut and
installed fenders on a Sam if I remember correctly for the same reason. I
was looking for a flat, non-curved fender to possibly mitigate some of the
risk of running knobby tires with fenders, and found the woody fenders.

Cody at Woody's fenders offered a "split kit" with extra hardware needed to
split the front and rear fenders if needed. I had him split the front
fender for me as I knew for sure I'd need it there, and bought the extra
hardware from him in case I needed to split the rear as well. Per my
recollection I don't think it NEEDED to split the rear, but it gave a bit
more wiggle room in doing so.

Here's s couple pics that I took when I initially did the install:

https://goo.gl/photos/PGFP7zhM4H6q8Jhn7

I found that with fenders and knobby tires, riding in gravel, I had a few
incidents where rocks got caught up and theater bed to do bad things. I
only took the rock n' roads off because I haven't been using Sam for
off-road riding since my last tour. They're great tires, he just spends
most of his time on the pavement now, so Compass tires get the nod.

[RBW] Santa Fe (half) century?

2016-05-17 Thread Patrick Moore
Has anyone onlist done the half century? If so, can you tell me how steep
and how difficult it is? I am just *thinking* that I might try it this
Sunday.

10 years ago, 50 hilly miles on a 75" fixed gear wasn't that big of a deal,
but I've not done more than 20-30 mile rides for a long while, and I was
rather slack about riding in April. And, I'm 61 -- not that much older
riders can't do much more than this, but I'm not particularly strong.

If I do try it, I'll have the new S3X hub, geared either:

46X15: 76/57/48
46X16: 71/53/44
46X17: 67/50/42.

I'm tempted to use the 46X16. One thing that I can do is climb in highish
gears; that's not a problem. What worries me is the fatigue after about
30-35 miles.

Comments?

Patrick Moore, who had to "warm up" today with 4 miles east in a 70" gear
against an E wind gusting to 35, in otherwise pleasant ABQ, NM.

[RBW] Re: Santa Fe (half) century?

2016-05-17 Thread Patrick Moore
This is from the website, which is encouraging, but I'll enjoy others'
comments.

This ride is great for cyclists of moderate ability. If you have done some
20-25 mile rides, you might surprise yourself at your ability to now do a
Half-Century!! The camaraderie and support of the other cyclists will
encourage you. Many riders are occasional weekend cyclists. But, because it
is 50 miles and does require some endurance, doing some training rides
prior to the event will add to your confidence and ability.

[RBW] Re: Slightly OT; WTB BURLEY PICCOLO

2016-05-17 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I hope you enjoy the Piccolo. My family has really enjoyed ours - my son is
really excited about going out riding and keeps up a running commentary
about which gear he's in. We've now got the Burley racks on both my Clem
and my wife's Clementine, so we can trade off towing him on family trips,
or either one of us can do individual trips. It's been very cool. I
understand that one can buy a front wheel for it and turn it into a full
bike - that should be a good next step.

[RBW] Re: Brooks saddle repair?

2016-05-17 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Seems I spoke too soon, gentlemen.
IIRC I offered my worn out B17N here a while back.
There were no takers so I must have gotten rid of it.
Sorry to stoke hopes and dreams and then crush them. Or something like that.

Jay

BTW I finally installed the Rivet Pearl I bought and really like it so far.
I may have a lightly used honey B17 Imperial for sale soon.

FWIW from a flatlander from the windy prairies, given that you still ride
fixed a lot and you have some gears to play with , you might be tired but

[RBW] appaloosa pedal dust cover

2016-05-17 Thread Patrick Kelly
Previously I discovered that I was missing a small part.

https://flic.kr/p/G5obap

It turns out that this is a "dust cover". I emailed dave@riv about it
and he immediately sent me a replacement part (and a gratuitous sam
hillborne brochure). So, awesome service on riv's part there.

I just put in the new one, and checked the other dust cover (on the
other pedal, obviously). The remaining one was loose! So I used
beeswax on both of them. I suspect that is sufficient. I have
locktite, but that seems a bit much in this case.

I just wanted to let other appaloosa folks (or anybody who has these
pedals, if there is anybody else) that they might wanna check their
dust covers, and put something in there to keep them from wandering
off.

[RBW] Re: appaloosa pedal dust cover

2016-05-17 Thread Jeremy Tavan
Thanks for posting this! I have a pair of these pedals (taken off an
Appaloosa build by my LBS), and will definitely check the dust covers for
tightness and apply fixative if necessary. I really like these pedals, btw.
They're really smooth and comfortable, and the pins are grippy without
being painful through the ultra-thin shoe soles I generally wear.

I believe a titanium axle upgrade is available for them. Just what we need
for a better life here on the Reservation.

I just left the residue on the last time I had a bar like this. Since my
next build left that area open, it gives me something to fiddle with as I

[RBW] FS/T/Free: Wheels, Parts and Bikes

2016-05-17 Thread Eric Karnes

So…after getting my new Roadeo (which works s fabulously for the road a
gravel trail riding I do), I’m selling my other bikes and some random
parts. Late spring cleaning, so to speak. From now on, it’ll just be the
Roadeo and an old Trek set up single speed as my city commuter. Here’s what
I’ve got:

PARTS:

1. Custom built 650b A23 Wheelset with Pari-Moto 38mm Tires. 32h. 105 front
hub, VO Freewheel rear hub (5-7 speed), DT Competition Spokes. Barely used.
$250 or trade for a nice 700c wheelset.

2. Nitto Drop Bar. I think it’s a Mark’s Bar (came with my Roadeo).
Measures 46cm center to center. Free to whomever wants it. Just reimburse
me for shipping.

3. Tektro 559 Brakes. Rear is nutted. Front is recessed allen. Same as
above.

BIKES:

Don’t want to clutter up the board with non-riv bikes, so feel free to
email me and I can give you full parts lists / measurements / photos.

4. 60cm custom-built Surly Cross-Check tourer. Custom Mavic A719 / Shimano
XT / DT Swiss Competition Wheelset. XTR M953 Rear Derailler (9sp),
Shifters, and Brakes. Jones H-Bar. Barely ridden. $1000. (Would prefer to
sell the entire bike, but If you are interested in just the parts group, I
might be open. They would make for a mighty sweet Hillborne or Appaloosa
build)

5. Litespeed Obed. Single speed build with Surly Singleator. 26inch wheels.
Thomson stem and seat post. Custom steel rigid fork. Soma Clarence bar. I
know, I know! It’s not steel, but is actually a pretty neat bike. I built
it up a bit to mimic Mark’s old Richey on the Riv site. $700.

Open to trades and offers. Just lemme know what you’re thinking. Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread George Schick
RJM - I have a similar background with auto mechanics as you and I agree
with your assessment of hydros - to a certain extent. For one thing, it
depends on the manufacturer. Hayes brakes have been a PITA to install and
bleed compared with some others. Secondly, my experience with the
reliability and ease of adjustment of discs in general all depends on how
well they are anchored to the fork or rear stays. I have a Surly 1x1 with
an Avid BB7 mounted on the front with which I had a devil of a time keeping
the disc centered between the pads for the longest time UNTIL I ditched the
QR and changed the front axle to a bolt-on that I could torque down nice
and tight. Since then they've been rub free, squeak free, and uneven
braking free. I recall reading somewhere, though the source escapes me,
that if everything were ideally designed from scratch, the disc and caliper
would be on the right side of the fork, which would act against working a
QR mounted hub loose from its fork ends.

One big factor that Grant has missed is the wear effect of rim brakes.
Sooner or later the rim will need replacing. That means a wheel rebuild
which may well lead to getting a new hub at the same time. That's a whole
new wheel just because your brakes are worn - quite a waste if you have
decent, handbuilt wheels that otherwise would have lasted a long time. On
 a
disc system, you just replace the disc.

The related thing is that wear on the rim is hard to detect. You either
play it safe or you take it to the limit - which you only reach when your
rim is so compromised it blows. Discs are far more transparent. As Mark
says above, on this basis Grant's preference for rim brakes goes against
the usual argument for steel over carbon.

On the issue of servicing, I've never worked on disc brakes but surely
if you avoid hydraulics and stick with cable operated then
 servicing/repair
 is easy.

[RBW] Re: Slightly OT; WTB BURLEY PICCOLO

2016-05-17 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

It's one of my all-time favorite bicycle accessories. That's dad, Mack, and
Clementine at the farmers market last week. (I knew there was a reason I
didn't ditch that old Pearl Izumi rain jacket!) On the topic, I would like
to get a second Moose, and they now are listed as compatible with the old
made in USA Piccolos, but the photo does not look like it has the hole that
the bolt screws into. It is admittedly not from a great angle (why only one
product shot?) Does anybody know for sure if the new Moose will work with
vintage Piccolos? Although looking at this photo, though only six and a
half, he is starting to look big on this thing, I think I already have the
handlebars all the way to the max line, but still a bit of room in the seat
post.

[RBW] Ride report: A Short, Eggcellent Adventure

2016-05-17 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

I was a bit tired after work but I still had to vote on the school budget
and pick up eggs from a friend. He said they would be "in something" and
hanging on the driveway fence. Knowing that his egg cartons are buried
somewhere deep in his shed, I grabbed a soft shell cooler and threw it in
the basket of the Clementine and headed down the stairs and out the door.

There were more than a dozen eggs stuffed in a plastic grocery bag hanging
from a picket, so I first took a few out, gently laid the bag in the cooler
in the basket, then tucked the remaining eggs in the corners so they would
all be on one layer. I zipped the cooler top and really cinched the cargo
net down, trying to squish the shell so that the eggs couldn't jump much on
the bumps. I rode home somewhat carefully, dropped them off and headed over
to the high school to cast my vote. (Safe and sound on those big 650Bs.
Later, I made scrambled eggs and leftover beans, bread and ham for dinner.
Super protein tonight!)

On the road in to the school, I saw a middle-aged woman riding a 20"-inch
bicycle up ahead. I caught up as we entered the school grounds. Her bike
had "Origami" on the down tube, so I surmised it was a folder. She had a
flashing light either on her helmet or on the clip thing women put in their
hair to hold it up, but the flasher was low on batteries, mostly hidden by
her hair, and pointing at the ground. We made bike small talk and went in
to vote. I saw our community farmer on the way in and a seamstress I know.
I knew fairly well two of the three candidates for the school board that I
voted for, and the third I knew his wife.

Riding back home I passed a dad towing a little guy on a not-Burley
Piccolo, one of the ones that attaches to the seat post. I smiled as I went
by (I was on the road, they were on the sidewalk) and gave my bell a brisk
double brrring and dad smiled back. Nearer to home, I met a small rise in
the road and got out of the saddle. The day was starting to fade, and the
quality of the light just then resurrected a memory of my childhood and
making my way home on my bike before dinner, or late for dinner, maybe my
mom calling my name from the back door. Me pedaling up Woodycrest Drive and
onto Greentree Court and into the gravel driveway, breathing the slightly
cool spring evening air, anticipating the long summer days just ahead.

Hi George. I wasn't chastising anyone for their spelling, (and you spelled
it correctly) just pointing out to Patrick that the wiki thing I posted
explained the two spellings, and part of the difference *was *the US/UK
thing he mentioned--though it is not a clear cut case of US/UK such as
gray/grey or color/colour. For those that care about such things (that
would include me) disc is currently the correct spelling when referring to
brakes, whether English brakes or American brakes.

They spell it that way because that's the way it is spelled. Generally
if you choose to spell it 'disk', everyone will know what you are talking
about. Only the uptight jerks will correct you, or claim that they don't
know what you are talking about. Kind of like derailer and derailleur.

Re: [RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-17 Thread Bill Lindsay
The fun thing I picked up from Mark's Wiki link is that in computer media,
a DISK is magnetic media, while a DISC is optical media. Floppy disks,
diskettes, and hard disks are magnetic media. Compact discs, laser discs,
and Digital Video Discs are optical media.

[RBW] Re: First weekend of riding... ouch.

2016-05-17 Thread IanA
That collarbone will bother you for a while. I broke mine (Superman landing
over the handlebars when front wheel locked in a crack in the road). The
bone knitted back together relatively quickly and came back together
straight, but I think the muscles and tendons take quite a bit longer to
regain strength. A longer ride would bother the shoulder, but pretty sure
only because of the muscle atrophy in the area. As part of your back to
bike regimen, add in regular sets of push-ups and other strength building
techniques. Ron's comments about core strength are good to keep in mind on
and off the bike.

Best wishes for the continuing healing process and get the strength back as
soon as possible.

>> Next day, I said I'll take it easy. Just go for a ride with the 13 y.o.
>> Same plan, nice and steady. 25 miles and 1700 ft later...
>> well, my clavicle is

>> So good times this weekend!
