That's me - bought the frame from a list member a few months ago but couldn't
quite reconcile with the sizing. I was planning to post it here and on the iBOB

either list.

Would also love to trade for a 60/62 QB or SO if someone wants to size down.

[RBW] Re: Bars for Climbing

2016-09-26 Thread Kai Vierstra
Thanks Jim,
Saddle's a Brooks B67 and the seatpost is a Nitto lugged lay back post, a 27.2
with a shim (I know, shims are lame). I wanted a post with more setback, as the
Brooks don't allow for much movement, and the choices in 29.8 are few and far
between with zero options having any real layed back positioning. Already
having the lugged post and an S83 post, I decided my Clem would suffer the
injustice of a seatpost shim, mainly worrying about wasted post below the shim.
Turns out that the shim was long enough to clear the end of the fairly short
post, so no troubles there, and I did some hacking of the shim to follow the
contours of the seat tube collar so's to look less awful.
I should really take some better pictures to properly introduce my bikes to you
all, but juggling regular job and freelance gigs while raising 2 & 5 year old
boys has a way of taking up all that spare time, and I want to finish some
custom racks in that no spare time... ..fortunately my regular job is
overseeing sculpture shops, I just need to close my eyes and get bending.

Keep climbing!, whatever the bar

So, last round of parts random parts as I finish up my plan to thin the
heard and revamp the SimpleOne…all pricing include ground shipping.

Sturmey Archer 3speed Hub (36h) with 18t Freewheel, Stem Thumb Shifter, and
Housing. Just add new cable. Good condition, works well. Indicator chain is
a bit rusty…still works fine, but you can replace for five bucks if you so
desire.

$80

Sugino XD2 172.5mm Crankarms (no rings or fixing bolts). Used, but decent
condition. Purchased for a project, but ended up going with 170mm arms.

$35*

Sugino 40T Chainring. New in Bag. Purchased from Riv.

$25*

Sugino 26T Chainring. New. Came off a Riv crank and never used.

$20*

* (if you want the two rings and XD2 as a set...basically a RIV low double
without the outer guard...$65)

Sugino RD 165mm Crankset with 48T Ring. Good condition. 130bcd.

$45

VO Grand Cru Seatpost. Good condition…the usual scratches.

Shortly after this thread paused I broke my duraace dt 10 speed shifter. I

shifter Justin mentioned two post prior.

Just rode a century with it on Sunday. Worked amazingly well combined with a
short cage shimano zee clutch derailer. About half way tbrough the ride I
started liking it even better than the previous indexed setup.

Thanks Justin for the info and inspiration! I am pleasantly surprised!

[RBW] Re: MKS Sneaker pedals reflectors vs. reflective leg bands.

I have the Sneaker pedals and really like them. I think they have
sufficient reflectivity combined with lights and other reflective bits on
my bike. You'll almost certainly get more reflectivity from ankle straps,
but I prefer not having to think about it.

Hi Chris,

I missed the ride last year, and am looking forward to joining you. I live
outside of Pittsburgh and ride/guide the local trails often. I agree with

mileages. Another is in Confluence run by Corp of Engineers(?)

Anyway, depending on where you plan to start or where you're staying here

Cumberland. I'll look for further post as to details.

[RBW] Thoughts on building up a Clem Smith, Jr.

2016-09-26 Thread Jack Doran

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share some take aways from building up a Clem Smith,
Jr.-L. My SO was in the market for a mixte or step through, and I saw a 52
frame set at the garage sale for a really good price.

- As others in the group have pointed out, the chain stays are super, super
long. I went with two Sram chains because the power link is much easier to
deal with than Shimano's linking system, in my opinion. I used 124 links
and all the 9 speed chains I saw were 114. I've seen that this is kind of a
turn off for some people and that's understandable. A lucky alternative is
if the mechanics at your LBS have bulk chain that they can just run off a
spool. Riv does, but I don't know whether or not they sell chains like that
as replacements or if they only use it for frames they're building up.

- If you're using brake housing from a kit, chances are, you won't have
enough. I knew the L model's braze-ons were designed to have the rear brake
cable housed all the way from the lever down to the hanger or noodle, but I
underestimated how much housing that would require. A lot! Not a big deal
since another quick trip to the LBS took care of it, but lesson learned for
next time. The upside is that the housing's arc from the last braze on down
to the v-brake noodle is super gradual, which I'm guessing means less
friction. Likewise, the kit's rear brake cable came up just short, so I had
to buy a tandem cable.

- There's so much clearance between the tire (650b 38mm in this case) and
fork that it almost looks like you could run a wheel size up if you so
desire. I know some v-brake arms allow enough travel distance of the shoe
to squeeze different in a bigger wheel, but I'm not sure what this would do
to the handling or if anyone has tried this.

- With all that clearance, if you're looking to use a front rack that
mounts through the fork crown hole, you're going to need cantis with a
longer straddle cable or v-brakes with especially long arms to avoid
blocking the hole.

Hope this helps anyone who is looking to build up a CSJ-L and if anyone
else has done so, I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

I would agree with Ryan in stating that the tiagras are perfectly adequate
which is why I've never replaced them. I see them as functional but not

It's the same general idea, but modern sealants like Orange Seal are so
very much better than Slime that in fact it is a different system. You use
only 2 fl oz for a road tube/tire (4 oz for a fat tire) and it works so
much better that there is little to compare -- in my experience.

Dear Leah,
I share others appreciation for both the updates and your writing talents!
On the pedestrian issue, if the sidewalks are indeed trails, perhaps getting
your community to place signs would help. Most of our "trails" have frequent
signs reminding folks to walk/bike on the right and pass on the left, to
announce they are passing, and to follow speed limits. Signs along with PTA
presentations and individual conversations will help.
My love of cycling dates to 5th grade when I was allowed to bike to school.
Keep up the great work and keep the updates coming.
All the best,

Re: Response to questions on using tubeless tures. Re: [RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread Valerie Yates
Thanks so much! This is very helpful. Is putting the tubeless sealant in a
tube somehow better than those slime-filled tubes? Or the same?

I am doing a tiny amount of moving things around and then will take and
share pics of the Hunq. It is orange! At first, I wondered if it is real
because I don't really see many orange ones in online photos but every
other thing about it says Hunq. The paint seems fragile, though. It came
with the Atlas rims, an SP-dyno hub in front, a White industries hub in the
back, RTPs, Sugino double crank/chainrings, a 12-40 cassette, VP grippy
pedals, Paul canti brakes, Tektro drilled alloy brake levers with gum
hoods, Berthoud saddle (which I am swapping to a different bike in favor of
an Imperial Flyer), Chris King headset, Nitto dirt drop bars and stem,
Nitto seatpost (the longest I have ever seen! It bottoms out in the seat
tube.) And the Nitto big back rack and big front rack. Plus a nice dyno
light and usb charger device. I'm swapping the big front rack with a
different bike and putting a mini-front rack plus wald basket instead. He
said he's only had it 6 months and ridden about 500 miles. All of the
components are all ones I like and would have chosen. All of that for 2k.
What do you think? Seemed like an amazing price to me but I suppose these
assessments are relative to the person and the local market.

And I realized after I hit send on my last messages that I keep forgetting
to delete out the prior text when replying -- so sorry for the extra space
in your inboxes. I use the web interface and so I forget it comes by email
to many/most people.

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread Jeremy Till
Not really a response to your question, but a plug for Cliffhangers:
they're awesome. I've got the 622 versions on my Clem build and they built
up easy, so far have been super bombproof (laced 36h 3x), and the tubeless
setup is 100% straightforward (I'm using Specialized "2bliss Ready" MTB
tires). I seated the tires initially with a compressor, but the last time
I topped off sealant I seated them with a floor pump, just to see if it
could be done-- no problem! I think it's cool that Velocity is making a
rim like this, and it seems perfectly suited to something like a tubeless
RTP setup.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Perhaps I've just been lucky, but with a good tubeless setup, don't the
beads stay in place by friction and not by air pressure alone? I've had
setups where air pressure was required, and I never felt comfortable with
them -- didn't want to need a compressor 20 miles from home, or to risk
having to install a tube in a tire messy with sealant.

At any rate, Furious Freds' beads stay stuck on Velocity Blunts rims even
when all the air leaks out.

for reference, atlas rims tubeless set up is awesome. i use the Airwave
Airblast Tubeless track pump here

So easy to set up tubless with that pump. No leaks once your bead is
seated. i'm selling so i can try to possibly get wider rims, set up
tubeless again. maybe cliffhangers or rhynolite XL tubeless. but mostly
likely putting on cheap 26" wheelset tubed for the time being so I can
switch out RTPs and knobbies quicker.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread David Stein
Valerie - congrats on the Hunqapillar purchase! With tubeless you should be
fine with any regular air pump for topping off. You want a compressor or
something for when it goes flat, because you need a heavy blast of air to
get it seated right. I have 2 tubeless setups (one legit with tubeless
ready rims and tires, another with tubeless ready rims and non-tubeless
ready tires, and about to setup a 3rd with non-tubeless ready rims and
tubeless ready tires), I have a Topeak Joe Blow high volume floor pump and
have been fine with just that, never had to use a compressor - the downside
is those HV pumps only go to 30 psi. I also keep some air compressors in my
riding tool kit (along with a tire plug kit) to help on the trail if I get
a flat, though luckily that hasn't happened yet (knock on wood). Though you
could just as well carry a spare tube and use that with a regular frame
pump. One of my tubeless setups is a 3 inch tire and the spare tube for
that is gigantic, hence the co2 cartridges and tire plug.

Shoji - funnily enough I messaged Philip as I came across his thread on
that bike build and he offered to sell me his wheelset!

Response to questions on using tubeless tures. Re: [RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Valerie: Yes, your floor pump will be fine. Just be sure that the valve
locknuts are always tight; otherwise a screw-on chuck or adaptor can loosen
them.

I carry 1 tube with the prescribed amount of sealant, in case of puncture
that the sealant in the tire won't close. Fortunately, I've yet to use it.
I assume that installing the tube would be difficult -- breaking the bead,
if you're setup is a good one, and getting the bead to seat again; and
messy -- leftover sealant in the tire.

After a couple of months carrying 2 tubes, it became clear that flats were
largely a thing of the past, and now I carry just the one. After all, if a
tubeless system is regularly going to need several spare tubes, it's
probably not a good tubeless system.

Here in usually very dry NM, I find I have to add more sealant every 2-3
months -- interval indicated by the growing frequency of slow leaks. (When
sealant is at proper levels, these are very rare; and even when sealant is
low, all flats are slow ones, or have been so far.) After most dirt rides,
and many pavement ones, I find the F Freds' tread speckled with little dark
spots where the Orange Seal has come through to do its job.

With my road bikes, for which I still use tubes but filled with Stan's or
Orange Seal, I also carry 1 spare, sealant-filled tube, and I've had to
replace tubes only twice in the course of, what, 3 years? I think that
sealant in tubes does not work as well as it does in tubeless tires
designed to be run tubeless, but it still works PDG. I think I get 1 slow
leak for every 20 or so I got pre-sealant, only now of course the slow
leaks generally stop themselves -- and this with much lighter tires.

Sealant contained in tubes seems to be like sealant in the bottle: it
doesn't dry up. Tho' I must, come to think of it, check my tubes to see
that this is so.

Photos of Hunq? May I indiscretely ask what you paid for it?

[RBW] Re: Rat Trap Pass tubeless on Atlas rims?

2016-09-26 Thread Valerie Yates
I just bought a Hunq off craigslist that has RTPs tubeless on Atlas rims. I
didn't need another bike but a Hunq in my size, beautifully built, at an
amazing price. . . well, that's not just another bike. I scooped it up.

The seller said it took a couple of tries to get one of them to hold air
but then it worked fine. I think the issue was how much or what kind of
tape was used. But they seem to be well-seated and holding air, if that is
the question. I can take measurements later if you are curious about
clearances, etc. Looks roomy.

It has been a hard week and I haven't ridden it yet. I'm also just getting
up to speed on how to maintain a bike that is tubeless. Can I use my floor
pump to top off the air when needed or do I always need to use a compressor
cartridge? I wanted to get some tubes to have on board just in case it
flats out on a ride. And so I've also read some tutorials about installing
tubes after tubeless, just in case. Any tips most welcome though perhaps
better in a separate thread.

I think Philip Kim has a Hunqapillar with RTP tubeless on Atlas. (Set up by
Gravel & Grind?)

Maybe he'll chime in?

The only reason I haven't bought a Cheviot for use as a commuter is that
with the extra-long chainstays I fully expect it to have the same problem
on Caltrain as my Clem, alas. To get that bike in the three-sided racks, I
have to turn out the front wheel and take up several bike's worth of space.
I love the ride, but there are some external factors like public transit
cage size that dictate how long a bike should be. I note that Grant and Co,
being on the other side of the Bay, probably don't contend with Caltrain
space limitations such that they'd be a factor in their design process.
Aside from that, I'm a fan of the long-bike approach - super comfy.

Re: [RBW] Leah's Bicycle Bus! (and question)

2016-09-26 Thread Ryan Fleming
Leah, I was wondering how your bike bus was going.

Sounds like there are a few challenges

I find with pedestrians, some do take the bell as honking and get pissed
off. But most appreciate it and I'll often say something like " I'm not
trying to be rude, just trying to warn you; I'm approaching" still some
people are unbelievably selfish or self-absorbed or plugged in. I mean,
really, what choice do you have but to take your junior commuters on the
sidewalk?..

Also too bad that some of the kids are on totally inadequate bikes...that's
a tough one. I still think there are not a whack of choices for kids' bikes

Anyway, keep fighting the good fight

Hi Leah,
I'm with the others-- I enjoy reading your posts for the writing,
observations, and thoughtfulness.

RE: PTA-- these posts are very much presentation ready with a few phone
pics (or sidewalk and bike rack). Maybe there's a police officer or elected
official or ??? in your neighborhood who would help press for improvements?

Keep up the great work. Those children (and their parents) are fortunate to

On such a tall Redwood I was expecting 650b to look kind of dorky. The

try a conversion on my 68cm Bridgestone 400.
