Here's another pic, a Mark's rack on an Ocean Air Rambler which has the

clear the Racer brake. Extra struts and spacers are available a la cart at
Riv if you need them.

[RBW] Re: Riv Atlantis chainstay clearance

2016-12-18 Thread Julian Westerhout
There are lots of good builders out there -- and getting a custom is always
a neat idea. Many builders have their own ideas about how a bike should be
built -- sometimes some will build whatever a customer wants -- or thinks
they want -- all ok.

No offense to Belopsky, but in this case I feel this is request a bit off
-- presumably you really like what Riv has done with the Atlantis -- and
who can blame you -- it is a great bike, and I love mine. It has in part
been responsible for the greater availability of versatile bikes. I think
asking folks on a Riv list to give you exact dimensions so you can have
someone make you a cheaper copy does a disservice to both Riv and the
builder.

If you really love the Atlantis, save your pennies and buy one from them,
or wait to find a used one -- reward Grant and Riv for what they've done in
creating something you want. If you want something similar for less, let
your discount framebuilder spec it out.

Respectfully,

Julian Westerhout

[RBW] FS: 650b Wheelset, ChocoMoose Handlebars, HiRiser Stem, & Some other various Handlebars

2016-12-18 Thread adam leibow
Hello Rivendell ppl,

I have some stuff for sale. I adjusted these prices to be cheaper than what
I have them at on craigslist.

1. Nitto ChocoMoose Handlebar/stem combo. Light use, good condition. $110

2. Brand new 650b Wheelset: Velocity Aeroheat to Shimano LX hubs. I believe
this is Rich-built. It's 32 or 36 hole (can't remember). If spoke count is
a dealbreaker to you, I'll bust em out & check. Riv Standard wheelsets are
$400. get yours here BRAND NEW for $280, and with upgraded hubs (currently
they offer Deore hubs with their standard wheelsets, LX is better)!

3. Brand New Nitto HiRiser stem. 25.4mm bars, 1 1/8" steerer tubes. 130mm
but it rises a lot so there's less reach than you'd think for a 130mm stem.
This is to comfort-able-ize your otherwise normal bike. $73 new on
Rivbike.com, I'll give it to ya for $55. (PS. would work as a nice dirt
drop stem since there's so much rise. Nitto makes some drop bars in 25.4mm,
such as the RM13 which would be perfect with this stem as an oldschool
mountain bike dirt drop combo).

4. I also have some Map Ahearne Bars, the wider version they make to fit
brakes AND shifters. Silver. Rough cosmetic shape around where the stem
clamps, because of some shim issues. They work perfectly and have low
miles, they just have annoying scratches near the stem. Pretty much new
except for the ugly scratches, so only $20.

5. Nitto Jitensha Flat bars. 26.0 clamp. These were $55 new at boxdog and
have seen very little use. Make sure your stem can accommodate the 26.0
width, as most flat bars are 25.4. These only have room for brakes, unless
your shifters can be clamped on without sliding them over the end of the
bar, if that makes sense. I know some paul thumbies can do this, and my
Shimano Deerhead shifters can do this, too. Otherwise, just assume they're
to be used with downtube shifters or for singlespeed. very light use, $35.

I'd much prefer local pickup in San Francisco (Ocean Beach/Outer Sunset),
but I can ship, too, at the exact price it costs above these prices.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
George asked about my S500 brakelevers.

Regular brake levers work well with cantilever brakes. No special adjustability
is required. These levers do have a reach adjust screw, but that's more to tune
them to your hand size, not to change the mechanical advantage. You would
likely need a travel agent or similar device to use these levers with full size
V brakes, but mini v brakes and cantilever brakes work fine with no special
maneuvers

Another question, if I may, now that I'm looking at the finished build:
Those SRAM S500 levers - the manf.'s literature on the Web says their
adjustable for many applications. I assume that they were adjustable
enough to work with the canti's you're using without the need for a travel
agent? They look like very nice brake levers with good ergonomic
qualities.

[RBW] Re: Front rack for Appaloosa fork mounts

2016-12-18 Thread adam leibow
those mounts are for using a rear rack as a front rack, but Mark's rack
also works with them because it uses a second pair of struts. so the
forward-most struts connect to the mid mounts, and you can use the
rear-most struts to connect to the brazeons on top of the fork (in addition
to the diving board plate thing at the fork crown hole). this may require
some bending.

[RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
Glen, a 26x5" (4.3" actual) wheel fits in the front. But that wheel, from my
Pugsley needs special, custom-made washers (thanks pal Eric Liefeld, CEO of
Liefeld Fabrications Inc) to make the 135mm hub fit in the weird 142mm Jones'
spacing. My primary complaint about the JP is the weird front spacing. Newer
models have 150mm spacing up front, so now you can possibly buy a really
expensive Son dynamo hub to fit the bike. The back will take an actual 3.2"
tire ( a Knard on a Rabbit Hole rim) and no more.

Yes I ride Fruita and Grand Junction technical trails all the time since I live
there. :-) You would think a long (46 inch or so), wheelbased bike would make
technical trail riding difficult. It doesn't, really! I don't know why. This
seems to be widely observed. Turns out long bikes can be nimble.

I am no great trail rider and the Jones doesn't make me that, but I do clear
steeper ascents and descents than I do on any other bike. Also the flickable
front end (relatively unweighted and low trail) helps me do better in rock
gardens.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Andrew Huston
All this talk makes me feel that getting rid of my Jones may be a mistake.
(shameless plug for current sale ;) I don't ride the Plus and the Diamond 29
only comes in a 23". When spending this amount of money on a bike and being
told one size (or two) fits a range, it's hard not to be skeptical. My PBH is
~84cm at 5'10". Jeff suggested the stem length which seems the only necessary
part needed to change fit. It is amazing how I can feel upright and super
comfortable for long rides, aggressive when I want to be, and good in technical
stuff. Loop bars are a big reason. She ain't light tho, super stout. I run
Schwalbe Big Apples on road and trail and with good pressure, does a nice job.
All the buzz seems to be on the Plus but the 29 is a great all around bike. I
think Jeff is filling many folks Holy Grail bike dream.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Eric Daume
Bill asked more specifically about the Jones fit.

I think there's two things that let the Jones fit a wide variety of sizes:

- the seat tube is very slack, so a taller rider moves back more,
increasing reach

- the Jones H bar allow a big range of reach adjustment, so lots of room to
find a comfortable position.

I could think of a few other factors: the EBB lets riders adjust the bottom
bracket relative to the seat, and the rigid specific geometry keeps the
front end relatively low, for good standover clearance on the sloping top
tube. But I think the first two points are the most key.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread David Stein
I have the 24" and am on the short side at 5'7" and it fits great. Never
thought twice about it once I got it (and I way overthought it before
ordering, and was put off by this the longest time till I rode someones
Jones). This is from a dirtrag article, I'm sure Jeff has some blurb
somewhere as well":

"Though Jeff ‘s claim of proper fit for riders 5’5” to 6’2” may seem
dubious, I now believe it to be valid for the vast majority of people. As
rider height increases the virtual seat tube slackens to accommodate taller
riders, and conversely steepens for shorter riders. In conjunction with a
longer or shorter stem, the rider’s fore-aft weight distribution remains
similar, regardless of height. For perspective, Jeff designed this bike
around his six-foot self."

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Ray Varella
I've wondered the same thing in regards to how does one individual fit
themselves to a Jones bike.
I don't have any experience with BMX bikes (or the Jones for that matter) but
rode 26" wheel Schwinn cruisers for years.
Several of my friends rode them as well.
There was over 12" difference in height between the shortest and tallest riders
and everyone rode the same size bike.
No one ever second guessed their fit, we just made adjustments to bars and
saddle heights.

Is the Jones bike fit more like a 26" wheeled cruiser in terms of getting a
good fit.

Is good enough better than exact on these bikes?

Re: [RBW] Winter Ramble

2016-12-18 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. I've looked at these before, and I have a few worries:

Do they stay on securely? I have small ears with lobes attached (securely)
to skull.

Don't you end up losing one of the pair?

This morning it was 25*F when I left the house, and, while I should have
worn a balaclava, instead, I used one of the faux Peruvian caps. This
didn't keep my upper cheeks warm, but it sure did keep my ears warm.

I think that perhaps this might do the same trick while looking less Fredly:

https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Research-83155-Peruvian-Hat/dp/B003P8QMGK

Alas, if it only had a wee brim and Molteni graphics.

This looks possible:

http://www.bicycling.com/product/bontrager-classique-thermal-cycling-cap

But no winter hat I've used so far, over the years, stays put unless I
somehow tie it under the chin -- I've got big hair.

The little brim is a big plus. It helps keep wind as well as sun from the
eyes, and at night it keeps you from being blinded by oncoming auto
headlights.

Does anyone know of an earflap cap like the Outdoor Research one -- flaps
tie under the chin -- *with* a brim?

If not, I'm tempted to try a Bontrager and add elastic.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
Eric reported:

"I'm 6'3", 36" PBH, and fit quite well on a 25" Jones Plus (now "Jones
Large"). It's one of the most comfortable bikes I've owned, maybe THE most
comfortable."

Thanks for responding. It's very good that you are comfortable on your
Jones Plus, but I was asking more about fit than comfort. Specifically, my
main question was not "who fits on a Jones". My question was "how does
fitting work?" Do you "get fit" by taking numerous measurements, like some
"bike fitters" do professionally? Do you just jump on a bike and ride it
and buy one if you like it? Do you talk on the phone to somebody at Jones
and they say "just buy size X?" The thing I'm gathering is that the Jones
is almost like a BMX bike for grown ups. It's so fun and killer and
comfortable that it transcends size and fit. Just go ride it and have
fun. Nobody "fit" a BMX bike. You just rode it and smiled. Is that a
reasonable assessment? Or is there something particular about the build
process where you dial in the fit with the steertube and seat post, and so
forth that allows you to get a precise "fit" even though there are only two
sizes? The vibe I'm getting is the bike kind of transcends fit. Just go
ride it, tweak things if you feel like it, and ride it some more. Is that
the way it works?

Bill L asked: who fits on a Jones

I'm 6'3", 36" PBH, and fit quite well on a 25" Jones Plus (now "Jones
Large"). It's one of the most comfortable bikes I've owned, maybe THE most
comfortable.

I've had my Jones for almost a year. Here's a mid point write up:

https://bikingtoplay.blogspot.com/2016/07/bike-update-jones.html

I like so much about the bike, but lately I'm wondering if 29+ wheels just
have too much inertia for our twisty trails. Sometimes, it takes a bit of
man handling to twist the front end around. I'm lately experimenting with
650B+ in a 29er frame to see if that's a happy medium.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-18 Thread Bill Lindsay
George asked: "Did you select this particular model specially for your
commute, to carry it on board the BART trains? "

Short answer: Yes

The longer answer is more nuanced. I really dig the whole Rosco Bubbe
project and the way it allows us to kind of crowd-fund Rivendell's
continuing to explore bike concepts that flat out do not exist anywhere
else in the world. I particularly dig the headbadge and the rocket. My
ultimate custom Rivendell would possibly be a cantilever equipped Roadeo.
The 58cm Rosco Road is exactly that, for about $2700 less, albeit
tig-welded with heavier tubing. The deal killer for me was the horizontal
dropouts. Horizontal dropouts are completely useless unless you want to
convert your geared bike to a single speed. Three of my bikes (including
this Rosco) have horizontal dropouts and I'd change them all to vertical if
I could wave my magic wand.

But then I rode it. It rides like a great road bike. I tested out the
Liftatube and it's perfect for me. I kind of hated the look of the top
tube and head tube extension. The top tube looks "dropped" for no really
good reason. Lifting the bike by the handle gave me a good reason. It
fits! The top tube is right in my arm pit and I've got a great grip on the
liftatube. It's like a tailor measured my sleeve-length and custom built
that liftatube for me.

Still, the combination of the price, the horizontal dropouts and the look
of a cheaper tigged bike still had me on the fence. I had almost the
entire build on-hand. I had sold my low-trail, flexy ('planing') road
frameset, and had a great dynamo road wheelset ready. I almost backed into
a used Ebisu All-Purpose that would have become this build. I lost out on
that one, and decided to build this purpose built every day bike instead.
That made the price more palatable because I was going to buy a used frame
for $1450, but I got this one for $925. It's like I SAVED $500, right? :-)

Anyway, it's going to be an optimal bike for my every day BART + bike
routine. I will experiment with a couple bike camping load configurations
on it, and if I spend as much time riding this summer as I expect to, I
will not rule out putting a pair of Compass Stellacoom 700x38 knobbies on
it and doing some cyclocross races this next fall on it. A Legolas at a
$2000 discount? Maybe

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread 'Mojo' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'll jump in here. I have ridden the Jones Plus for 18 months and a Krampus for
an afternoon. There is no comparison. The Jones' handling is fast and nimble.
It climbs like no other bike. The Jones has numerous design features that work
together for its unique (to me) handling. The shallow head angle, 67.5 degrees,
and very long rake, 76mm, create geometric trail in the mid 70s. The Krampus
has a slackish HA at 69 degrees but uses a more traditional rake of 47mm
(because big rake requires a radically new, or very old, fork design) that
creates a very sluggish 100mm of geometric trail. The 'upright and back' rider
position also adds to the Jones' nimbleness.

Then the rear end; the Jones chainstays are 19 inches, the Krampus 17.1 inches.
I personally am DONE with short CSs. The longer CSs help me keep the front end
down during steep climbs.

The far out front wheel and the far back rear wheel make for a large sweet spot
for climbing, and security for steep descents. I agree with Daniel, the Jones
is in a different league than the Krampus. I love Surly's but not for 29er Plus
design, yet.

[RBW] Re: Snow powder and pack tires

2016-12-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
This morning's ramble was down the pass four miles on densely snowpacked
roads and nearly no traffic to get communion for my family. Racing Ralphs
gripped wonderfully, and I would have been uncomfortable with the Thunder
Burts on this section of road (which has greater potential for drivers
unfamiliar with how to drive in these conditions than when I'm going the
other direction). Even testing braking and turning grip on sections where
spinning car tires nearly turned it into ice, tires remains very grippy.

Coming back up that pass revealed I'd had a grand tailwind heading down, as
I got to hunker down and crank my way into a 40 mph headwind with gusts
upward from there. No sideways skipping from the tires in this, which also
impressed me.

I love these types of rides. The kind that take 3 times as long both
directions because of weather. The kind that require stupidity to do, and
endurance to complete. That's just fun. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Bill - I noticed from your photo of the Rosco that it's one of the first
frame designs that Grant came up with that has a cross-piece welded in just
above the front derailleur, presumably to facilitate carrying the bike
while walking or running. Did you select this particular model specially
for your commute, to carry it on board the BART trains? Very nice
build-up, BTW, and as others have posted, I like that color, too.

I purchased some of the first run 650 x 32B Cypres and they were white
label/wire bead.
The green label/folding bead has a different composition.
It was either the rubber compound or casing being changed to reduce rolling
resistance, I don't recall which but the Hetres debuted around that time so I
never revisited the 32s.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Daniel Jackson
Dear Bob,

I transitioned from a Krampus to my Plus. The similarity between the two
ends at the 29+ platform. The Plus is a mature, well thought out design
with geometry optimized for the large footprint; the Krampus is a 29er with
a yoke designed to clear 3" tires - nothing more. Where the Plus is fast
and extremely nimble, the Krampus is downright sloppy. And the Plus riding
position is exceptional compared to the Krampus, allowing the rider to be
far more comfortable in technical terrain without suspension. Yes, 3" tires
certainly help, but front end geometry dictates how trail forces translate
to the rider - the Plus has this dialed.

Best,
Daniel

[RBW] Re: Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Daniel Jackson
Hi Geeter,

Unsure of what you mean here by "hold up to the Hunq as a commuter." I
could see you might mean:

1. Handle luggage - I disagree. The Jones definitely handles several types
of loads with applomb and, because of its front end geometry, I beloeve
actually handles a front load better than the Hunq.

2. Durability? - I disagree. The Jones has never failed me in any
substantial mechanical way.

3. Speed/Efficiency - again, I disagree. A recent BQ review actually showed
the Jones 29er shod with Super Motos to be equally as fast as the groups
more typical light tubed racing/rando frames. As a commuter with the right
tires and the EBB setup to provide adequate BB height, I think the Jones
would be a stellar commuter. Stable, fast, great riding position for
navigating traffic, and super maneuverable.

Best,
D.

Re: [RBW] Jones and Hunq

2016-12-18 Thread Daniel Jackson
Dear Ash,

I use a Yepp Mini for the kid and a Pass and Stow with Swift INdustries and
Porcelain Rocket baggage - as seen here
 in the
aforementioned CA trip last year. There are other photos in that album of
the Hunq setup.

Interestingly, on a high trail bike like a Rivendell, the combination of
load behind *and* in front of the steering axis works really well both at
low and high speed. Without the toddler, the front load seen in the above
photos is harder to manage - certainly doable, but not as smooth as on my
low trail machines.

Best,
Daniel

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam: A Three Year Retrospective

I completely agree Patrick. The QB can transform a grown man into a kid on
a BMX bike in the woods. 40/16 is a great gear for getting around and even
stretching your legs on longer rides, but when you get to the woods taking
a few seconds to "digital" shift down to 32/22 or 40/22 puts you right in
the sweet spot for bumpy roller coaster trails.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam: A Three Year Retrospective

2016-12-18 Thread Kai Vierstra
I used to have the 40x32 up front with a 16x19 in back, and on my
Brooklyn/Westchester/Brooklyn commute I switched out of 40x16 once, promptly
switching back. So I ditched the 32 and have an unused 19 on my W.I. Dos
freewheel. So, in my experience pedaling the Quickbeam around NYC, having too
many options just complicated things. You'll be surprised what you can do with
the single speed on a climb, not being able to shift/second guess where you're
at, just pedaling, purely.

Ha! There is a sweet-spot which few bikes hit between the simplicity of
single speed and the reality that three speeds open up riding on anything
that is ridable. For me, the Quickbeam hits that sweet-spot and has invited

stronger, more flexible rider.

Thanks to all for the good info. I will be using a 126 mm FW wheel, not flip
flop, and wanted some gear choices while avoiding the usual derailers and 6 spd
FW. Will probably go with a single chainring and dingle in the back. I don’t
ride off road so its sufficient to have a mid 60” for the city and climbs, and
low to mid 70” for go fast.
Thanks again!

2016-12-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
Alan,

I have 32/40 front, 16/19 rear. I only run the high (outside) and low
(inside) combinations. To Patrick of the Moors' question on why Grant went
with front rather than rear for the difference, I can only speculate that
dual cogs may not have been readily available at the time? The upshot for
me is that I can maximize the spread and achieve roughly the same high low
ratios (with my 22t cog on the flip hub) as a IGH 3-speed, all within the
range of the 8-tooth spread the rear dropouts allow. My high gear has a
combined 56t, my low gear has 51, so with a spread of only 5t I have a gear
inches spread from 40ish to 70ish. Not bad range for a single speed. Grin.
See Sheldon's gear calculator chart attached.
