[RBW] Re: Lovely Bicycle

2018-01-04 Thread Christopher Murray
I reread my initial post because I was confused about what was so offensive
about it. At that point, I realized it could be interpreted to say something I
didn’t mean. So I posted to explain what I meant and what my intentions were.
This is the truth. You can believe what you want to believe. What you can’t do
is tell me what I meant or what my intentions were.

For good or (more likely) bad, I read and post in the middle of a hectic day.
Typing while going from meeting to meeting is not a best practice but it is
reality. I will apologize that my initial post could be construed as harsh but
I assure you that was not my intent.

All the best,
Chris

Your clarification is a rewrite. You said it "wasn't right" that she didn't
update, and "unnecessary." I'm sorry, but you can't just erase the original
statement - which seemed bizarrely harsh to me - and pretend the current one is
what you really meant. You can apologize and revise..that's the ticket.

[RBW] Re: Lovely Bicycle

2018-01-04 Thread Christopher Murray
To clarify my original post (which upon rereading and reflection is in need of
clarification):

I did not mean she owed anyone an explanation for her absence. Nor that she had
an obligation to share details about herself, situation, or life she did not
want to share. I did mean that it would have been nice to post something in May
or June or whenever just saying she was taking a break. She had no obligation
to do this but by July/August people were genuinely worried about her (if you
don’t believe me do a quick google search). There were suggestions she was
sick, caring for a sick parent, done with cycling, hurt, or just moved on to
something else. Should I apologize that I worried about her? That after 8+
years of following her blog I felt a connection to her as a fellow cyclist? I
won’t apologize for that.

I wish her all the best. I am sure she will come through this stronger and
wiser. That the light at the end of the tunnel is there and real and reachable.

Cheers!
Chris

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking with 38mm knobbies (Compass Steilacooms)

2018-01-04 Thread Philip Williamson
I wouldn't worry about it. Try it, and if you find it's not working, go
bigger, raise the pressure, or slow down. Fixed riding kind of limits the
amount of speed trouble you can get into, anyway.
My rims are generally 18mm inside, with 32 spokes, and I don't have wheel
troubles. Cliffhangers are probably overkill. Don't you already have
wheels? The bum wheels I've had have been second-hand machine-built Deores,
and they'd break spokes on the road. I don't generally ride with a rear
load, though.

Do you know those were pneumatic tires? My guess for late 1800s Australia
would be solid rubber, given that Dunlop started commercially producing
pneumatic bike tires in Ireland in 1890, IIRC.

Probably too wide. Here's a Mavic engineering article on tire/rim
width:
http://engineerstalk.mavic.com/en/the-right-tyre-width-on-the-right-rim-width/

I agree with Daniel that pinch flats are going to be a problem with a load
and narrower tires. I don't know that tubeless would help with tires at
that width. You can pinch a tubeless on a rock and have it burp out the
sealant. Also, it's not just total weight but distribution of the weight.
With all the load over the rear tire, it's going to take more of a beating
than if the load was distributed more evenly across the bike.

Might as well try it but take extra tubes and a patch repair kit.

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking with 38mm knobbies (Compass Steilacooms)

2018-01-04 Thread Daniel Jackson
Two risks come to mind:

1. Pinch flats. This will be mitigated a bit by increasing your tire
pressure but offroading with that much weight on a 38mm tire might just
warrant exploration into tubeless territory.

2. Your rims will take more of a beating.with the narrower tire. I'd
recommend extra spokes and tools for their installation in your kit.

Best,
D.

[RBW] 62 Appaloosa rider with 90 PBH?

2018-01-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
I’m not sure the geometry comparison, but my 90pbh is perfectly happy on my 62
Hunqapillar and 66 Quickbeam (which are the equivilant sizes). Riding with a
mid-foot pedal position, my seat is set pretty low (lower than it was when I
started out, with forefoot pedaling), my stem short and low. Looks a lot like
the bikes of old (and I wonder if that large size contributes to the stability
I experience riding). Works great for me on all roads and trails, go fast or
bikepacking or grocery running.

[RBW] Bikepacking with 38mm knobbies (Compass Steilacooms)

2018-01-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Seeing the loads carried by Australian sheep shearers in the late 1800’s on
similar width tires over likely similar roads/trails has inspired me to test
Compass Steilacoom 38mm tires on my fixed gear Hunqapillar for bikepacking and
seeing how that goes and what I learn. Any real world, similar set-up
experience greatly appreciated. A few data points and questions experience
(mine and/or yours) can/will answer:

— I’ve noted handling of the Hunqapillar is optimal with 38-44mm tires compared
with 2.1” tires. Tracking and smoothness of handling is noticeably improved, to
the point that I was considering a 650b conversion to decrease wheel/tire mass
yet have bigger tires until Grant laughed me to my senses.
— 44mm Snowqualmie (smooth) handle more poorly on the terrain I ride than 38mm
knobbie Steilacombs.
— My bikepacking load with engine, food, and water totals 250 pounds.
— I’m betting an increase of tire pressure by 5-7 lbs will take care of the
load increase and still keep the ride plush.
— float in sand/mud/loose gravel will be diminished, but my experience with
fixed and the plush Steilacooms on the Quickbeam says both factors make up a
lot of the ground lost by using a narrower tire. Will be interesting to see.
— My rear wheel plan is a cliffhanger, which has an inner width of 25mm. Will
this work with a 38mm tire, or be too wide?
— I carry all non-engine weight on the rear rack, save for my water bottles.
— I went from 50mm Schwalbe Dureme tires (beefy marathons) loaded on trails, to
ThunderBurts, which were a vast improvement. I’ve not tried loaded on plush
more narrow tires, but unloaded, the Steilacooms are far superior to the
Duremes and the Thunderburts in nearly all conditions. The Thunderburts (and
now Racing Ralphs) do better in loose sand, which isn’t a huge part of what I
ride).

Anything I’m missing that I ought to consider?

I read a book about living on your bike and the guy said one can ride on
the top tube and put one foot down on the ice for balance while riding on
icy streets.

But I won't ride on wet roads below 35F for fear of an icy crash.
I crashed in dry warm weather going about 5mph on a sidewalk and broke me
arm fall 2016. So I definitely won't ride in icy conditions.

I can guarantee I can think of the life events the first paragraph may refer

I/we are young, inexperienced, or have not experienced the extreme challenges

Quite glad she's back, I was afraid I or somebody else had put her off after
her last post on geometry, Modern vs. Classic with contentious comments. I
reached out to inquire about her wellbeing, but got no reply. If you read her
blog frequently you could probably gather that she is a very sensitive person
and maybe takes things a bit personally. I sort of feel like maybe the
obligation to fill up a blog with new content was a little taxing and things
all came to a head?
It's a bit funny, because I came very close to deleting the link around
Christmas.
In any case I think she'll be happier if she treats the bike blog with the same
level of seriousness as her knitting blog.

[RBW] Re: Lovely Bicycle

2018-01-04 Thread Bob Lovejoy
Hi Richard,

Yes, it certainly caught my attention that she had been drawn back to film
(versus digital). And, yes, that does remind us of people (someone!?)
possibly close by. I don't believe it is just nostalgia, but I used to be
very interested in photography when younger, with a small darkroom set-up
in a closet, a Gralab timer in the semi-dakness, it all feeling like
genuine creativity and discovery. Once digital seemed to take over, it
lost its charm, a push of a computer button to make the picture look as the
computer thought it should, a hundred shots taken instead of a few, the
deletion as instant as the creation. The computer was probably right, but
I just did not care... I think it is so cool that people are reclaiming
things and ways they love, whether they make modern sense or not.

I was just glad to hear she was ok...! And people who ride their bikes
because they love to, and live their lives simply and consciously, are to
be remembered and valued.

Here's to finding our way this new year... I might even go find an old
Minolta SRT-101 or something, maybe an old rangefinder... well, just
because... :>)

Best to you,

Bob

also to note, had a friend in chicago who rode 622x28 tires on his snow
beater bike. claimed they cut through the snow rather than riding on top of
it. never did that myself.

studded knobs aren't for me. the pumpkin ridge bite into powdered snow on
the road really well, and then shed that snow off the tire very well. so
the tire actually will rotate in the snow, instead of spinning and digging
deeper into the snow with no movement.

i didn't really expect much, but its pretty amazing really. Like Deacon, I
too, ride slow and steady and have to vary my pedaling a bit. I've been
looking for some snow tires too, just surprised that a "smaller" tire works
so well. Studded tires have its uses, but i'd rather ride these pumpkin
ridges and ride slower/more careful than ride with such heavy tires, with
studs that wear out so quickly considering how expensive they are.

I am of the belief I should be riding more alert and careful in any
inclement weather anyways.

2018-01-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
On/in/through slush, slop, and frozen peanut butter, my Steilacoms are superior
to my racing ralphs, which tend to be more swimmy. I’m not sure how much is due
to narrower tire (38mm v. 2.1”) and how much is knobby pattern and/or plushness
of tires. The Compass tread patters sheds matter with each tire rotation better
than any other knobby I’ve used, so it has a fresher, cleaner pattern to dig in
far more often. (Peanut butter slop and mud being the exception to this. They
are glue.) But slush, slop, and frozen peanut butter are perhaps the most
challenging to ride through of cold weather conditions. It’s as much about
technique as any other factor. Good tires without technique will be very
frustrating until you learn. Play with what works, but I find slow and steady
speed and pedaling works very well (and far more so fixed).

Re: [RBW] It looked like just a little stick...

2018-01-04 Thread Tim Gavin
Yep, no photos.

I lost a vintage Deore XT M730 derailleur once to a power line flag marker
(the ones on a small wire, stuck into the ground). The wire managed to
insert itself into a chain link as I rode by, which then jammed the chain
in the deraileur, which swung up and broke right through the upper knuckle
casting. It took a couple spokes with it in its death throes, but it broke
before it bent the derailleur hanger on the frame.

It's too bad, because that derailleur probably had 30 more years of service
life left in it!
