[RBW] Billie Bar vs. Jones Loop H-Bar

2018-09-16 Thread Jake P
In the most perfectly 'Grant' fashion, the dimension descriptions of the Billie
are more about ~feel~ than anything else. Which I really appreciate, but I've
never ridden an Alba so I don't have much of a starting point to base his
descriptions on.

Can anybody who's ridden both a Jones Loop H-Bar and a Billie comment on the
ride quality/ ~feel~ differences between the two?

If anybody has both bars and can photograph them on top of each other to show
differences in the dimensions (grip area length, bar angle, width etc) I would
be greatly appreciative as well!!! Thnx

[RBW] Re: Heron again

2018-09-16 Thread LeRoy
You're very fortunate to have found your (s)old bike in good condition.
Although it's another form of two-wheeled transportation, I had always
regretted selling a certain Norton Commando motorcycle. So I tracked down
the buyer. The good news: he still had the bike *and* it was for sale. The
bad news: it now had a naked lady mural on the gas tank, extended forks and
other distasteful modifications. It was no longer of interest to me. Years
later, I still shed a tear for that bike.

[RBW] WTB: Completely knackered Brooks B68 (Going to try re-hanging a leather top)

2018-09-16 Thread LeRoy
Has anyone tried re-hanging (that's the term used in the two links
referenced below) a new leather top on a saddle that's completely shot? I
came across an eBay auction for new saddle leather die-cut to the
dimensions necessary to rebuild various Brooks saddles. As I've grown fond
of the Brooks B68 on my Clem, I though I might give rebuilding an old
saddle a try. Thus my plea:

*Who has a worn out, tired old B68 for sale? * I'm your buyer.

If I come across one, I'll post my rebuilding and riding experience. It may
be useful; it may be a waste of time. Here are link to the auction and the
website of the purveyor of replacement leather saddle tops.I'd welcome your
thoughts and related experiences.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud fender installation questions

2018-09-16 Thread 'Tom Matchak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi All,

Lots of useful information being traded here. I see that, when trying to
squeeze out the last bit of clearance under the fork crown, there's no love
for the traditional daruma bolt/nut. I'd like to suggest taking a look at
the PlugNut fender mount, which lets you create a flush-mount, centered,
female M5 boss in the bottom of the steerer tube. Simple to install,
secure, and designed to be compatible with brakes and racks that use the
crown's center-mount hole.

[image: PlugNut drilled for centermount brake or rack.jpg]

The hex head machine bolt and thin washer that are used to attach the
fender together create the least protrusion into that precious gap between
tire and fender, and you could probably thin out the bolt head if you're so
inclined. And, as opposed to the large dimple typically created to work
with the daruma's big ole hole cover, the PlugNut works with a small,
shallow dimple, which also helps out in the clearance department.

The PlugNut is available now in the Velo Lumino web store.
(www.velolumino.com) On the product page, you'll find links to an
installation video, and to a cool clip of a destructive test showing how
secure the PlugNut really is.

Thanks for taking a look.

Glen, NH

(Disclosure: I have a commercial interest in the PlugNut fender mount.)

[RBW] Introduction from RBW fans in NZ

2018-09-16 Thread Chris in NZ
Hello everybody

I’ve been a member of this forum for a while but haven’t had much to contribute
so far aside from the odd comment on a couple of threads. However, I thought I
would introduce myself in anticipation of a post in the coming weeks once I
assemble a couple of dream bikes (Hunqapillars for myself and my partner!)

My partner and I live in Dunedin, New Zealand, and we are avid
commuter/utility riders as well as occasional cycle tourists. We currently ride
LHTs, have recently bought for short trips and we have a beautiful sage
Hubbuhubbuh.

I had my adult rediscovery of bikes a few years ago when I quit what I was
doing, bought the LHT and spent four months touring NZ. During that tour I met
a guy riding a bike unlike any I had seen at that point, and until I saw that
it had modern Shimano components, I believed must have been a relic.. What
really made an impression on me was that he seemed to glide along the road
rather than ride and couldn’t believe riding a bike could be so joyous (as much
as I enjoyed riding my LHT). I wrote down the word “Atlantis”, and when I
finally had a chance to google it, I fell headlong into the Rivendell universe!
I found out recently from an old blug that this was Caddie Mike - if you’re on
here Mike, thanks!

I met my partner shortly after I finished that tour and indoctrinated her into
cycling for fun and utility, eventually built her a LHT also, and we both ended
up with Albatross bars and a longing for a Rivendell bike...
We thought the HHH might sate us but ultimately we both needed singles too! We
pushed the button on two Hunqs in January and just received them. Once I’ve got
them assembled I’ll report back...

Chris

Interesting. I see the curved second top tube of the new Atlantis inverted

Re: [RBW] Hilltrek Ventile Cotton Analogy Sale

2018-09-16 Thread John Bokman
Well, I opted for the 2x Ventile Greenspot jacket, even though I was really
interested in a smock. It won't be here for 6-8 weeks, so won't be able to
report for a while yet.
I wanted the jacket because it will be primarily used as a
commuting/general purpose jacket, and a zipper is more convenient for me
in those situations. If I were buying a specific use garment I'd rather go
with the smock.

And based on the interesting notes from Andy about color impregnation, I
opted for dull, drab Olive green, because, for my use, it's more versatile.
If I want to be seen - I do - I'll employ a vest of some sort over the
jacket when it's truly dark.

Thanks to you guys who chimed in with thoughts, impressions, and opinions.

BTW, Dave over at Hilltrek is very helpful, and prompt with his responses
to my many questions over the internet.

Re: [RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Don: I joined Rivendell circa 1994, and I too have observed the transition
from Old School steel-and-toe-clips-and-wool-jersey roadie schtick, and
cheap but smart kit, to the current crop of cruisers (that last term is not
used in deprecation, but it's an apt term) and $250+ bags. I've owned 5
Rivs, and still have 2 -- both road models. I've owned most of the bags
Rivendell has sold, though many I've bought used.

I've scoffed at tweed mudflaps and so forth, but the scuttlebutt is that
even the Clems and Roscoes and what have yous still have that magic
signature handling and I, for one, won't dismiss these sweepback-bar models
until I personally ride one.

Very nice! I was considering green bar tape for my build too :-) I've
noticed the paint seems to chip easily, but so far not in large flakes. If
it ever gets to the point of needing to repaint it, I will also change the
rear brake braze-ons to accommodate continuous housing, but I hope that day
is a long way off.

I'll probably put fenders on it for the winter, and a kickstand soon, but
for now I'm enjoying the low accessories build.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-16 Thread iamkeith
After staring for a day, i have to say the overall shape has really grown on me
a lot. I sort of liked the look of the Ritchey Commando (the newer, steel,
fat bike version of that name), which had a similar curve for standover
clearance... but then somehow completely missed the boat by still having way
too short of a stack height. This gets it right!

Not super fond of the rear brake cable routing, but it's easy to nitpick
details that would probably disapear in real life. Or maybe be solved with a
pulley-type cable hanger.

Meanwhile, I see at least three super SMART details on Gus that always seemed
like glaring ommissions on my Clem: Two sets of bottle cage braze ons on the
top of the downtube; Pump pegs behind the seatpost; and Offset kickstand
mounting hole to accommodate fat tires.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-16 Thread Tony DeFilippo
My first reaction from the initial visual wasn't super positive... but it's
growing on me a bit. I don't love that top tube curve but I'm not sure
why. I do love Grant's Mongolian horseback analogy for trail riding, I've
never thought about it that way and will re-read a couple times and try to
incorporate it a bit myself. I also enjoy the newly created 'Hill Bike'
segment but it also highlights the difference in readily available riding
for Mt/Hill bikes close to me... for all the reasons Grant highlights
urban/suburban trails are mostly tailored to the capabilities or
aspirations of dual suspension bikes, at least the intermediate and
advanced ones. I'm 1-2 hours from the kind of trailhead for the wandering
exploratory rides he's talking about which makes it difficult these days.

Still I'm thrilled they made the bike, as much as I do like the hydro-disc
brakes on my Jones Plus I think I'd be fine w/ canti's and better able to
service them (though the hydro procedure isn't rocket science). I'll be
interested to see the final production version. I hope he goes w/ a cream
headtube... maybe that is what is bothering me in my initial blush more
than the curved top tube, or maybe its the tig weld transition of top tube,
down tube and head tube... something discountenanced there for me.

Tony

[RBW] 56 & 58 Hunq standover with max tire?

2018-09-16 Thread tc
I'm having a hard time finding standover heights for the 56 Hunq (which I
believe was only offered in 650b) with the max tire. This chart
lists standover of the 56 at 84.1,
and 58 at 86.7 -- but not sure if that's at max tire size, which would be a
2.35. I would think they'd provide standover spec's at the max tire, but
who knows. I can call Riv of course, but thought some of you may have
actual measurements...

If anyone out there has a 56/650b or 58/700c with 2.25 or greater tires,
could you share your standover height at the midpoint of the TT?

Theoretically I'd ride a 58 (90.5 pbh), which would be fine for the road.
But, given this would be more off-roadish, I think a standover max of 84
(with max width tire) would be safer for bumpy stuff and sudden dismounts

Thanks,
Tom

On my Roadeo, I have Tektro R538 brakes with Planet Bike plastic fenders,

All work really well together, plenty of room for a 32 tire, but that would

[RBW] Shimano cantilever brakes (CX-70/50) link wire question

Jeff,

You don’t have to use the link wire. I have CX-70s on my Atlantis and
jettisoned the link wire in favor of a conventional straddle wire with a
Jagwire straddle cable holder. Works perfectly.
I believe some others on the list have done the same thing.

[RBW] Re: ISO: sweepy silver 31.8 handlebar

2018-09-16 Thread Garth

Jeremy, According to Merry Sales the Albatross bar comes in 3 widths, the
31.8 being 56cm wide, what the original Cr-mo version was. When I bought a
HT Al Alba the first thing I noticed compared to my 56cm steel bars was the
curve was a smaller radius and I didn't like it one bit. It also wasn't
55cm as promoted. The Merry Sales page explains it. The curve of the 56
steel to me is perfect and it appears the 31.8 version uses that shape.
I've not seen a 55 steel to know if it has the same curve and the 56
versions. No website that sells the B352 mentions all these subtle yet not
insignificant variations of width and curve. I can see why some people do
not like the HT Al versions, they ruined the perfect curve !

https://merrysaleswholesale.mysapanywhere.com/products/212352357531680-nitto-hbar-b352-albatross

The Jones bars are 31.8 for Drw . More room for the hands and wider, 45
degree sweep.

Given that the bike was built up with Will in mind, I was thinking those
were 29" tires but I think you are right that they are 27.5. The photo is
not quite high enough in resolution but it appears more like "27" than
"29".

Manny's photo shows him holding up a bare frame that is closer to the
Appaloosa blue color, which is one of my favorite Riv colors. Manny's
photo is so distorted that the seat tube looks higher than the headtube and
I can't tell if that frame is larger or smaller than the one on the Blahg.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-16 Thread 'Chris Lampe 2' via RBW Owners Bunch
When Grant stated that it would have a lot of stand-over but wouldn't be a
Mixte, I assumed the bike would have a sharply sloping top-tube like most
modern MTB's. A downward curved top-tube never occurred to me and I was
very surprised when the bike was unveiled.

I can imagine that the GUS BOOTS-WILLSEN is amazing for the type of riding
it's designed for. I look forward to seeing these with the Wavie Bar,
which i assume was designed specifically for this bike, given Grant's hint
about a 31.8 version.

[RBW] ISO: sweepy silver 31.8 handlebar

2018-09-16 Thread Drw
Anyone have a recommendation for a 31.8 bar that is similar in shape and length
to the map/ahearne bar? Or even something like an albatross would work. Has to
be silver.
